Well, what a fabulous night, last night was!
To celebrate St Patrick’s Day, Jameson arranged an international Tweet Tasting using the hashtag #JamesonWhiskey.
Their aim was to celebrate and toast the patron saint of Ireland and also to let everyone know of some other whiskies in the Jameson stable that you might not know about including their premium whiskey Jameson Rarest Vintage Reserve.
The four whiskies sampled and tweeted were:-
- Jameson Original
- Jameson Gold Reserve
- Jameson Select Reserve
- Jameson Rarest Vintage Reserve
If you want to catch up on what all the tasters had to say (and there was quite a few of them!) you can view the tweets by searching for the hash tag #JamesonWhiskey on Twitter.
So, what did I think?
Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!
Tasting Notes – Jameson Original ( 40% )
This is the classic pot still whiskey made with a delicate grain whiskey, which is then infused with the flavours of sherry casks and balanced out with the flavours of bourbon casks.
Jameson Irish Whiskey is triple distilled creating a smoother spirit perfect for any occasion.
Nose: Very floral, slightly woody and getting a hint of lovely spice.
Palate: Sweet, spicy and nutty – grapefruit and quite dry on the palate.
Finish: Lingering sweet n’ spicy with a long dry finish.
Overall: Very nice indeed! A classic Irish Whiskey – great for use as a mixer and for a ‘nip’ on it’s own.
Tasting Notes – Jameson Gold Reserve ( 40% )
Jameson Gold Reserve is a creative blend of three aged whiskeys, one of which is uniquely matured in virgin oak barrels delivering a smooth complex taste.
The spirit is then aged in bourbon barrels and sherry casks bringing out the whiskey’s honey toasted sweetness with notes of spice.
Nose: Slightly woody with surprising hints of mint. A richer sherry than the Original Jameson. Aromas of syrup & caramel.
Palate: Heavy sherry, lovely syrup and sweet fruits.
Finish: Spicy and peppery with a long, long, long finish.
Overall: An amazing blended whiskey! Tastes more like a single malt – finely balanced and complete.
Tasting Notes – Jameson Select Reserve ( 40% )
Jameson Select Reserve is created from a high proportion of Irish pot still whiskey and a rare small batch grain whiskey.
It is then left it to mature in flame-charred bourbon barrels allowing the whiskey to develop it’s unique, smooth flavours.
Nose: Sweet, fruity aromas with subtle spiciness.
Palate: Sugar dancing on the tongue, hints of melon – incredibly light and sweet, reminiscent of sherbet and icing sugar.
Finish: The long spiciness at the end is very welcome – it makes a good counterpoint to the sweetness.
Overall: Quite a bit different to the Gold – an interesting mix of sweet and spice which works very well.
Tasting Notes – Jameson Rarest Vintage Reserve ( 46% )
Hand crafted Jameson Rarest Vintage Reserve contains aged whiskeys brought together with pot still whiskey and matured in hand-picked second fill bourbon casks.
This rare blend was voted the world’s Best Irish Blended Whiskey at the 2009 World Whiskies Awards.
Nose: Full bodied, sweet, lovely spice and there’s some banana and coconut in there!
Palate: Sweet and sherry, tingling on the tongue and an amazing melon hit!
Finish: Lovely mango fruits – really powerful … spice and nuttiness, long finish.
Overall: Excellent blended whiskey, a dram that needs one than one tasting to fully appreciate it’s complexity.
My Favourite On The Night
Out of the four whiskies, I think it’s got to be the Jameson Gold Reserve that won the night for me.
Not only is it a fantastic dram, worthy of being placed alongside some fine single malts, but it also comes in at a very competitive price!
I’d like to wish Steve Rush a speedy recovery and hope he gets well soon and also to thank @themisswhisky for standing in at the last minute and for doing such a fantastic job running the Tweet Tasting!
And of course, Jameson, without which!
