Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Speyside.
Distillery: Benromach.
ABV: 46%
Unit: 70cl
Distilled/Bottled: 2009/2017
Age: 9 Year Old.
Cask Type: Ex Sassicaia.
This beautiful Benromach Wood Finish is matured in First Fill bourbon barrels, followed by 28 months in Sassicaia casks from the fashionable wine-producing region of Bolgheri in Tuscany.
Pour yourself a good dram and notice the stunning deep ruby red colour, imparted by the former Sassicaia wine casks from Bolgheri. Now take a few small inhalations and take in the AROMA WITHOUT WATER… the nose is brimming with luscious red berries and hints of ginger and cinnamon, complemented by a subtle sense of smoke.
Now sip and enjoy the TASTE WITHOUT WATER. The initial peppery palate gives way to a ripe fruit bowl of flavours… strawberries, raspberries, orange zest… and you can detect gorgeous milk chocolate drops, too. Add a little water for the AROMA WITH WATER, noticing the nose opening out… it’s fresh as a breeze with subtle herbs and summer fruits.
Now sip it, roll the whisky around your palate and enjoy the full TASTE WITH WATER, peppery with a sweet toffee note followed by a slight saltiness and a subtle smoky edge. Tell us what you think.
A limited release of 7783 bottles will be available.

The Glen Grant & Wild Turkey Twitter Tasting – Which One Would Tickle Your tastebuds?

March 24, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

Which one would tickle your tastebuds?

It was a Glen Grant and Wild Turkey comparison ‘taste-in’ for Wednesday nights Tweet Tasting, hosted by Steve from The Whisky Wire.

The malts sampled were:-

  • Glen Grant 10 Years Old
  • Wild Turkey 101
  • Glen Grant 12 Years Old
  • Wild Turkey Rye

There was a marked difference in the tastes and styles of the two brands and differences of opinion abounded on the night on Twitter. The great thing though about a wide selection of flavours is that there was something to please most palates on the night!

If you want to catch up on what all the tasters had to say you can view the tweets by searching for the hash tag #UKvUSA on Twitter.

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!

Tasting Notes – Glen Grant 10 Years Old (40%)

Glen Grant was founded in 1840 by brothers John & James Grant. Today, Glen Grant is the world’s number 5 selling single malt Scotch whisky. Production at the Rothes based distillery is overseen by Master Distiller Dennis Malcolm, who has worked for Glen Grant for over five decades. The 10 Years Old is Matured in bourbon barrels.

Nose: Very fruity and fresh! Pears and apples with a slight hint of honey and vanilla custard and also a bit pear droppy.

Palate: A bit ‘thin’ mouthfeel wise. Sweet and sugary, honey vanilla with hint of apples.

Finish: Long fiesty and peppery!

Tasting Notes – Wild Turkey 101 (50.5%)

Wild Turkey features the legendary father & son Master Distilling team of Jimmy & Eddie Russell, who have 90 years of combined experience making bourbon. This bourbon has a mashbill of 75% Corn, 13% Rye & 12% Malted Barley.

Nose: Lovely colour and so sweet! Toffee and oranges and tropicalness. Apple pie with lots of sugar and slightly caramalised – I’m in love! Slight oak, maybe just a splinter or two!

Palate: Just lovely! Syrupy sweet, tropical fruity – doesn’t disappoint and a great taste of cherries!

Finish: So smooth in the finish – sweet and long with a modicum of pepper – I’m impressed!

Tasting Notes – Glen Grant 12 Years Old (43%)

The 12 Years Old is Matured in bourbon barrels.

Nose: Nice woodiness coming straight through with a cheeky bit of honey with toffee and crisp apple – a bit less ‘pushy’ than the 10.

Palate: Toffee, vanilla and apple – nicely balanced and tasty!

Finish: Subtle, warming pepper – more refined and mature than the 10.

Tasting Notes – Wild Turkey Rye (40.5%)

Matured in ‘Alligator Charred’ American oak barrels. An Alligator aka No 4 Char, gives the interior of the barrel a rough texture similar to that of alligator skin.

This level of char imparts bigger & bolder vanilla and spice flavours. This Rye has a mashbill of 65% Rye, 23% Corn & 12% Malted Barley.

Nose: Very close to the 101 but maybe more ‘earthy’. Toffee, fudge, orange oak and a promise of great things to come …

Palate: ‘Meatier’ compared to the 101 but just as tasty! Sweet, tropical fruit but a little drier and more cherry cola! Licorice and caramel with charred wood thrown in.

Finish: Smooth, sweet finish with fruit and a little spice to wend it on it’s way – delightful!

My Favourite On The Night

Out of the 4, I think it’s got to be the Wild Turkey 101 – an absolute revelation! Bold, fruity, smooth – Get In!

Many thanks to Steve at The Whisky Wire (@TheWhiskyWire) for a great dram evening and the teams at Glen Grant (@GlenGrantUK) and Wild Turkey (@WildTurkeyUK), for the samples and without whom!

The ‘Five Virtues’ From Tomatin – First Two Releases Available From Edencroft!

March 15, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

The ‘Five Virtues’

Since 1897 Tomatin have been combining soft mountain water with tender local barley, introducing it to tall copper stills and – following years of maturation in oak casks – collecting the mellow, fruity spirit.

Approaching alchemy, the process reveals nature’s extraordinary elements in all their glory. Indeed – Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water – elements central to civilisation’s most ancient philosophies, enjoy incredible synergies. Combined, they produce outcomes far greater than their sum.

This symbiosis – the ‘Five Virtues’ – is a concept synonymous with the age-old processes and materials employed by our distillery men. Water feeds wood; wood sustains fire; fire gives life to earth; earth yields metal; metal gathers water; and the cycle continues…

To celebrate the Five Virtues, leading artist, Eva Ullrich, has explored these interactions and their role in whisky production. The result is five striking artworks…and five unique expressions.

THE FIRST TWO EXPRESSIONS IN THE SERIES, WOOD AND FIRE, ARE AVAILABLE NOW!

Anybody who orders the first two of this series is guaranteed the same amount from the next releases.

Fabulously fruited as it opens on the nose with a marmalade back drop, plus pastry, spices, barley and sherry all evident.
The palate is big and full of macerated red fruits plus an orange rind character, loads of really prevalent honey and a cranachan sweet, cereal style.
All neatly reappear in the finish with its last taste more reminiscent of a famous French orange based liqueur!

Finish: Long, smooth and spicy, with a delicious, yet delicate, lingering smokiness.
Comment: Gloriously smooth, yet with the depth and finish you would normally only expect of a much older dram. A wonderfully sherried whisky, and an excellent aperitif.

Flavour: Full bodied, delightful sherried fruit, with oak, a hint of peat and delicious sweet sensations.
Finish: Long and flavoursome, with a lingering spiceness.
Comment: An excellent introduction to the distillery style. Glenfarclas means Glen of the Green Grassland, and the freshness on the nose reminds me of grassland in spring.
So, for me, this is the ‘farclas’ aroma. In 2006 this was named the ‘Best Sherried Whisky’ in the Single Malt World Cup. More recently Glenfarclas 12 Years Old won Gold at the Stockholm Beer & Whisky Festival in 2007 and again in 2008.

Finish: Intense, long lasting, dry smoky and malty. A beautiful dark Belgium chocolate taste at the back of your mouth to complete the flavour of the 25 Years Old.
Comment: A great after-dinner whisky so rich and full that it is a dessert in itself, with a finish that goes on forever.

Home of Jameson re-opens following €11 million investment!

March 10, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

The new look ‘Jameson Distillery Bow St.’

Irish Distillers, Ireland’s leading supplier of spirits and wines and producer of the world’s most well-known and successful Irish whiskeys, has announced the reopening of the home of Jameson in Smithfield, Dublin, following a total investment of €11 million. The new look ‘Jameson Distillery Bow St.’ brand home, which was officially opened by Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform and Dublin Central TD Paschal Donohoe today, will support the Irish Whiskey Tourism Strategy target of trebling the number of Irish whiskey tourists visiting Ireland annually, to 1.9 million by 2025.

As Jameson continues its phenomenal growth story, with 27 years of consecutive growth, the redeveloped Jameson brand home draws on cutting-edge technology to complement the historic surroundings of this iconic distillery and deliver an unforgettable storytelling experience. Three fully-guided tours are offered: ‘The Bow St. Experience’ tasting tour focuses on the stories of Jameson’s rich heritage and on-going innovations while ‘The Whiskey Makers’ and ‘The Whiskey Shakers’ experiences provide more in-depth whiskey and cocktail masterclasses, both including the opportunity to sample whiskey straight from a cask in the distillery’s new live maturation house.

Old Jameson Distillery Bar

Each year, over 600,000 tourists pass through Irish whiskey visitor centres to experience first-hand the heritage behind this time-honoured spirit and hear the stories of established and emerging distilleries.

The Irish Whiskey Tourism Strategy aims to treble this figure to 1.9 million visitors by 2025 and Jameson Distillery Bow St. will undoubtedly play a central role in delivering on this vision. Smithfield and its wider Dublin environs have a rich history and vibrant cultural scene which will also continue to attract and enthrall visitors from near and far.
– Paschal Donohoe TD: Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform

As the home of Jameson, Smithfield has an incredibly important place in our history. We’ve grown up on Bow Street and welcomed over 4 million whiskey lovers through our doors since the opening of the Old Jameson Distillery brand home in 1997. With this latest investment, we place storytelling at the core of the visitor experience, drawing on state of the art technology to bring the 230-year history of Bow Street to life, with a variety of tour options to cater for everyone – from those who may be discovering Jameson Irish whiskey for the very first time, to long-standing Jameson enthusiasts who are seeking to further their understanding of this much-loved spirit.

The success of Irish whiskey is a success story for Ireland and we look forward to welcoming whiskey-lovers from across the globe and sharing our story with them.
– Jean-Christophe Coutures: Chairman and CEO of Irish Distillers

We have had the privilege of calling Bow Street home since 1780 and we’re delighted with our new makeover. Visitors can look forward to immersive storytelling where they will be invited to touch, smell and most importantly, taste Jameson in the original Bow St. Distillery building.

As Smithfield continues to experience a cultural resurgence, we’re incredibly excited to be part of this thriving community and look forward to being here long into the future.
– Ray Dempsey: General Manager at the Jameson brand home in Smithfield

Construction work began in September and was led by BRC Imagination Arts, Dublin based firm TOTP Architects and Flynn Management & Contractors, with approximately 100 people employed as part of the redevelopment work. BRC Imagination Arts is one of the world’s leading experience design and production agencies specialising in the creation of next generation brand experiences. Founded in 1981, past clients of BRC include the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta; the Heineken Experience in Amsterdam and the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin.

Two limited-edition malts, Ledaig 19 Years Old and Tobermory 21 Years Old, have been released by Distell's Tobermory Distillery.
This Ledaig 19 Year Old is some of the first spirit distilled when peated single malt production commenced at Tobermory distillery in the late 1990s.
Peat-dried malted barley was married with naturally peat-infused water from a lochan high in the mountains above the village. The spirit was then matured in superior oak wood casks before being finished in Marsala wine casks.
Tasting Notes: Beautiful rich single malt with a mouth-filling sweetness of berries and dark chocolate with a full peat explosion of black pepper and bonfire smoke.

We’re delighted to announce the limited edition release of our most exclusive bottling to date; the balanced and full-bodied 35-year-old second release. The liquid is being introduced with just 670 bottles available globally.
Laid to rest for over three decades in American oak ex-bourbon barrels, the casks have been carefully chosen by distillery manager Gordon Bruce and master blender Stuart Harvey.
Giving rise to a unique dram that still retains its youthful edge; the 35-year-old has top notes of lemon curd, green apples and cut flowers followed by honey sweetness, creamy toffee, leather and spice. Warming wood smoke makes for a fragrant and rich aroma.
On the palate, it is oily and full-bodied with caramel honey and fresh vanilla complementing the subtle smokiness and warm spice.
Brand manager Stephanie Bridge commented: “The 35-year-old second release is a special expression for anCnoc, having been matured for more than three decades in our traditional dunnage warehouses which still retain their earthen floors and add so much to the quality and character of this special liquid The second release has lain in ex-bourbon barrels, offering fans something slightly different to the original expression. Our limited edition is a testament to the 35-year-old’s popularity with whisky lovers worldwide and we’re confident that this unique release will entice drinkers to add it to their collections.”
Colour: Baltic amber.
Nose: Top notes of lemon curd, green apples and cut flowers are followed by a heavier honey sweetness, creamy toffee, leather, spices and a pleasant touch of warming wood smoke, making for a fragrant and rich nose.
Taste: Oily and full-bodied. Honey and fresh vanilla sit firmly on the palate, with spiciness and, once again, slight smokiness woven in. The finish is long and rewarding, with hints of ground spices and caramel sweetness.
Non chill-filtered, natural colour.

Since we launched the Compass Box Whisky Company back in 2000, we have always aimed to experiment, to innovate and to explore where others wouldn’t in the world of Scotch. No whisky is a greater example of this ambition than Flaming Heart.
First released in 2006, Flaming Heart was the first whisky to combine the rich, complex spice of Scotch aged in new French oak with the evocative peat-fired smoke of Islay malt. It created a genre-defying style that was smouldering, spicy, complex – and so popular that we re-released it three more times in the years that followed.
In this our fifteenth year, we felt compelled to revisit this unique style one more time. Our anniversary release is a huge, layered, long-lasting mouthful of a whisky to enjoy late into the night. Brooding, indulgent and older than ever before, this is a whisky born of oak, smoke and fire – with a big heart all of its own.
John Glaser, Whiskymaker.
Availability: A limited edition of 12,060 bottles. Bottled in August 2016.
Flavour Descriptors: A unique interplay between spice, sweet and smoke characteristics. Sweet fruits and wood-smoke on the nose. Fat and full-bodied on the palate with a spicy sweetness and a brooding complexity that is rich, sweet and addictively decadent.
Ratings: 96.5 Points and Scotch Vatted Malt of the Year / Jim Murray's 2017 Whisky Bible.
