Port Charlotte (bruichladdich) An Turas Mor + Expand Info. Box Country: Scotland Region: Islay
Age: Vintage: Strength: Bottler: Summary: New multi-vintage bottling of Bruichladdich's Port Charlotte spirit peated at 40ppm and matured in American oak casks. Jim McEwan’s (below) have us dribbling… Bruichladdich Bruichladdich Distillery was established in 1881 on the Rhinns peninsular on the island of Islay close by the sandy bays of Loch Indaal. Re-opened in 2001 with much of the original Victorian equipment restored to working order. The first release of Bruichladdich’s new whisky was the highly acclaimed PC5, the first release in the limited Port Charlotte range. Also producing very highly peated Octamore, Organic using Islay grown barley, and triple and quadruple distilled single malts. The Bruichladdich distillery visitor centre offers distillery tours including the bottling hall and the distillery participates in Feis Ile, the annual Islay Whisky Festival. The peaty smokiness together with the vanilla sweetness from the Bourbon casks is truly magical. This is followed by a real spicy black pepper and lemon spiciness twist, then little wavelets of saltiness ripple over the palate like an incoming tide, accompanied by flavours and aromas of Islay’s heather moor botanicals and ancient pine forests. The finish is a brilliant mix of vanilla sweetness and peat smoke with a splash of green fruit syrup and it lingers long and mellow giving total satisfaction. |

Port Charlotte An Turas Mor Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky + Expand Info. Box Country: Scotland Region: Islay
Age: Vintage: Strength: 46% Bottler: Summary: 70cl / 46% / Distillery Bottling – 2010's release of Port Charlotte is a departure from previous years in two significant ways: as a multi-vintage vatting and being bottled at 46% rather than the humungous cask strength of the earlier PC's. An Turas Mor ("The Great Journey", it says here) is intended as a coming-of-age PC, and, it is claimed, fulfils Jim McEwan's original vision for the brand. The journey continues… |

Port Charlotte (bruichladdich) Pc9 An Ataireachd Ard + Expand Info. Box Country: Scotland Region: Islay
Age: Vintage: Strength: Bottler: Summary: The final release on the journey to maturity. PC9 marks the last step of the story before the launch on next year's 10 year old heavily peated Bruichladdich. Limited release of only 6,000 bottles (the same as 2005's legendary PC5). Matured in American Oak Casks. Port Charlotte (Bruichladdich) The coastal village of Port Charlotte lies 2 miles down the road from Bruichladdich and was home to Lochindaal Distillery until its closure in 1929. Walls of its old shore-side warehouses can still be found by inquisitive PC enthusiasts. Bruichladdich distillery closed in 1995 but happily reopened in 2001 and its new spirit was sent to mature in some of the old Lochindall warehouses. Of course when the new whisky flowed in 2006 it was named Port Charlotte. There was talk of reopening Lochindaal, however, such plans seem to have completely evaporated. In contrast the PC concept is coming along nicely and enjoying annual outruns. Nose: No hanging around, it erupts from the glass in an olfactory fusion of black boot polish, pure peat smoke, spicy black peppercorns, treacle toffee, dark succulent dates, crushed sea shells, ozone, menthol – it’s a vortex of aromas. On the second wave, I find Christmas pudding, burnt orange and cinnamon sticks all contained within this cocoon of phenol. Absolute interfusion of Islay character. It’s a life support system – Brilliant! Palate: No respite, this is the quick and the dead. Now you can taste the rich, sweet flavours from the Spanish casks, the crème brulée from the bourbon, the biscuity, shortbread flavours of the barley, and always, that magical zesty, lemon peel flavour that is so unique to Bruichladdich spirit. Those flavours give the spirit complexity and balance so that you are not suffocated in a peat bog; your senses are alive and awake. PC9 is still young and gaining in sophistication, it gives you that heart-warming feeling that comes from passion distilled with pride. Well done my son, we are proud of your progress Nose: The finish is as glorious as an Islay sunset and it’s here on the ending that you experience some of the most pleasurable moments you will ever experience in the company of an Islay malt. |
