Port Ellen At the end of the gorgeous little sandy beach, standing on the high tide line, on Islay, washed by the salty sea spray and lashed by northern-ocean gales, sat Port Ellen distillery for over 150 years. Founded in 1825. Closed in 1983. CLOSED, just the thought of it brings the tears to every eye, of every whisky connoisseur, everywhere. Decades have passed since the last distillation, long maturation by now, awesome whisky, dwindling stocks, investors delight. No tasting notes at present.

The nose is fresh and clean, developing to a salty, oceanic style and runs to sweet smoke and burnt citrus peel. The palate is well balanced between sweet and smokey elements, then a mentholated quality appears which carries to a soft tar character. The finish is long, sweetly smoked with a salty, leathery quality.

Summary: Matured in a refill sherry butt. Distilled September 2010 and bottled October 2010 by Gordon MacPhail for the Connoisseurs Choice range. Port Ellen Port Ellen Distillery was established by Alexander K. Mackay on the southern coast of the Isle of Islay at Port Ellen in 1825. Port Ellen was a malt whisky distillery but closed in 1983 and whilst the distillery buildings remain Port Ellen drum maltings occupy part of the site and participates in Feis Ile, the annual Islay Festival of Malt and Music. Most recent official bottling of Port Ellen single malt whisky was the Port Ellen 11thRelease. During the winter of 1823-24 James Fox tested his newly designed spirit safe at Port Ellen Distillery prior to its introduction in all Scottish licenced distilleries by 1825 in order to comply with enactment of the Excise Act of 1823. Thus Port Ellen Distillery was the first Scottish distillery to install a spirit safe and James Fox was paid £428 for his work.  Nose: Sweet, with peppered kipper notes. Ozone and hints of driftwood. Traces of birchwood and charred woods emerge. Palate: Sweet, but ashy, peat smoke elements quickly emerge. Some hints of kippers linger.

Distilled March 1983 and bottled November 2010. Founded in 1825. Closed in 1983. CLOSED, just the thought of it brings the tears to every eye, of every whisky connoisseur, everywhere. Decades have passed since the last distillation, long maturation by now, awesome whisky, dwindling stocks, investors delight. Nose: A smoking malt kiln, a sweet camphor style & flamed lemon peel. Palate: Still sweet runs to a “Fisherman’s Friend” quality & smoking embers. Finish: Long and carries a burnt cocoa chocolate style & sweet liquorice.
