Summary: Matured in refill American hogsheads. Quite possibly the best value dram on the market. A smooth, easy drinking Speyside malt whisky. Tomatin Situated close by the Cairngorm National Park on the eastern edge of the Monadhliath Mountains and the upper reaches of the River Findhorn. Sitting at an altitude of 315m it is the third highest distillery in Scotland. Established in 1897 with its own spur line to the Inverness and Aviemore Direct Railway which opened in 1898 and finally connected Inverness to Perth and the southern markets. Operated with two stills until 1956 after which there were frequent and numerous additions culminating in 23 stills in 1986 making it the largest distillery in Scotland at that time. However, eleven were subsequently closed and it is currently operating with twelve. Places great importance on the quality of its casks and one of very few distilleries to operate a cooperage and to employ a cooper on site. Nose sweet with earthy notes. Palate spicy with herbal influences. Body medium. Finish sweet cereal notes.
