Summary: Banff 1976 vintage serves as a memory to a clean, elegant whisky with subtle peaty notes. Distilled Bottled August 1976 and bottle December 2010. Banff The Mill of Banff malt whisky distillery was established by Major James McKilligan just south of Banff at Mains of Colleonard farm in 1824. The Speyside distillery was acquired by James Simpson a local merchant and ship owner in 1852 but closed in 1863 when his son built a new distillery on a site to the west of Banff at Inverboyndie and named it Banff Distillery. Relocation enabled the opportunity to expand and take advantage of a plentiful supply of soft Speyside water and the new branch line connecting Banff to the main Inverness to Aberdeen railway. Despite surviving the ups and downs of the whisky industry Banff Distillery was amongst the batch of Scottish distilleries which closed in 1983. Partially demolished in 1985, most of the rest of Banff Distillery came down during a fire in 1991 and although shells of a few warehouses are still standing this is a lost Speyside distillery. No tasting notes at present.

Nose: Tropical fruits, soft smoke, white chocolate.  A touch earthy with pineapple juice. Palate: Syrupy, hint of spice.  Lots of fruits – mangos, lychee, sweet peat.  A touch of saltiness and grapefruit. Finish: Quite a lot of toffee, faint saltiness and lots of peaches.

Nose: First impression when nosing this dram is like walking into a damp dunnage warehouse – fresh, spicy carrying an old oak saturated with whisky character plus an attractive citrus style. Palate: The richly spiced quality immediately coats your palate with caramelised peaches and cinnamon running to more (now dry) oak. Finish: The finish is long and remains oaky and spicy with a pleasantly sweet creamy toffee character culminating in soft chewy leather, tobacco and cedar wood.

Summary: 70cl / 57.1% / Distillery Bottling – The Rare Malts are a now-discontinued series of cask-strength releases designed by Diageo to showcase some of the hidden treasures in their portfolio. This particular dram is all the more precious for having come from a distillery closed in 1983 and now sadly demolished.
