Benrinnes

Originally built in 1826, Benrinnes was run as part of a farm by owner Peter Mackenzie. But the buildings were destroyed in a flood in 1829 just three years into the distillery’s life. Rebuilding took place between 1834 and 1835 after which time production has been mainly continuous apart from two short spells of silence in the 1930s and 1940s. This was despite deaths, bankruptcies and a major fire in 1896 which needed major rebuilding work.

A Speyside malt whisky distillery perched on the north west shoulder of Ben Rinns mountain. Until the advent of modern road transport systems Benrinnes Distillery was rather isolated. Only a small percentage of Benrinnes malt whisky is released as Benrinnes single malt, including Benrinnes Flora & Fauna, as most flows into Diagio’s blends of scotch whisky. Distillation following an unusual and complex partial triple distillation process commenced in 1956 ran until quite recently when it was replaced by double distillation. Benrinnes Distillery is one of the few Scottish distilleries continuing to cool its spirit in worm tubs. A participant in the Speyside Whisky Festival. The Whisky is produced by a triple distillation which adds complexity. White chocolate and white pepper complements the aromas of nougat and melon skin.
