Tasting Notes – Glendronach 20 Year Old Abbey Whisky Exclusive!

February 13, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

Just look at the colour of that dram!

Just look at the colour of that dram!

Well Abbey Whisky has been sampling whisky cask samples again!

Their latest Whisky Exclusive is the result of all this ardous tasting and it is a Glendronach 20 Year Old – Cask 3400 to be precise!

Their last GlenDronach offering – single cask 33 was a fantastic success and I have a feeling, well in fact a certainty, that this success is about to be repeated.

For a start it has an amazing colour – I wouldn’t be able to resist it on this basis alone!

Glendronach distillery is located near Forgue, by Huntly, Aberdeenshire and is owned by another whisky stalwart, BenRiach.

Founded in 1826 by James Allardes it was the second distillery to apply for a licence to legally produce whisky under the recently introduced Excise Act of 1823.

The distillery draws its water from the Dronac burn within the distillery grounds. In addition to this it has its own floor maltings and two wash stills as well as two spirit stills.

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Glendronach 20 Year Old Abbey Whisky Exclusive – Cask 3400
( 54.8% )

As I said earlier, the first thing that hits you is the drams amazing colour – it’s dark sherry appearance invites you in well before you get to nosing it.

The liquid is also very full bodied and generous, clinging to the glass in a gravity defying manner.

Nose: Glorious sweet sherry nose, golden syrup, molasses and tropical fruits including mango. There’s also a little wood and maybe even a hint of licquorice.

Palate: Lovely generous mouth coating liquid with luscious sweet rich fruits. There’s also sherry, toffee, chocolate and spice with a slight touch of grapefruit.

Finish: Rich, dark chocolate comes to the fore followed by a long spicy finish. A touch of dryness and woodyness are present as well.

Overall: One of the finest whiskies I’ve ever tasted. It looks good, has an amazing nose and tastes fantastic!
A Powerful sherry dram. One to be savoured and shared with only those who are worthy – be strict though – most of us won’t be!

Many thanks to Abbey Whisky (@abbeywhisky) for an incredible sample!

Old Pulteney - 1990 Vintage

Old Pulteney – 1990 Vintage
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 23 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: Old Pulteney 1990 has been matured in hand selected American oak ex-Bourbon barrels and Spanish oak ex-Sherry butts.
The casks previously held heavily peated malt which gives this Vintage a slight smoky character.
Appearance: Polished amber.
Aroma: Subtle, warm wood smoke envelopes the sweetness of peardrops & crunchy green apples. Fragrant floral notes, fresh lemon zest & honey are followed by a spicy & fruity touch of ex-sherry casks.
Taste: Full bodied & rich. The initial sweet honey note is quickly followed by a wave of thick peat smoke, joined a moment later by a spicy vanilla, toffee & rum smoked raisins.
OLD PULTENEY DISTILLERY
Founded in 1826 by James Henderson at the height of Wicks celebrated herring boom, the Pulteney Distillery is one of the most northerly on the British mainland.
At a time when road links to the town were yet to be established, the distillery was dependent on the sea for its supply of barley and for the shipping out of its malt whisky. Wick became known for the barrels of silver (herring) and gold (whisky) which left the port in vast numbers.
The distillery itself has an absorbing history, with its unique stills defying convention to this day. The wash still, in particular, is a source of fascination to visitors due to the absence of a swan neck. Legend has it that when the still was delivered it was too tall for the still house and the manager simply decided to cut the top off! The Old Pulteney bottle now incorporates a bulbous neck to reflect the shape of the stills.
Over time, the distillery has passed through the hands of various owners, and even closed during times of trouble for the industry in 1930. Luckily, the repeal of an often forgotten period of prohibition in 1947 saw the welcome resumption of whisky production, with the distillery changing ownership a number of times, before its purchase by Inver House Distillers in 1995. Throughout this history what has endured is the quality of the whisky. Traditional craftsmanship and the distillerys windswept location continue to contribute to the award-winning whisky that is Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Old Pulteney - 21 Year Old Single Malt

Old Pulteney – 21 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 21 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: As with the 17-year-old, with this expression they marry together Old Pulteney matured in ex-bourbon wood with spirit from ex-sherry wood casks. The crucial difference, however, is that the ex-sherry wood in this case is made from American Oak (mostly Fino sherries). This adds yet another layer of complexity, depth and character to this truly superb malt whisky.
Nose: Full bodied with traces of fruits (apples and pears); slightly fragrant with spicy overtones.
Colour: Golden amber with straw highlights.
Taste: Sweet to start with a light fruitiness; hints of honey and vanilla followed by a dry finish.

Hakushu – Bourbon Barrel
Country: Japanese   Region: Japanese
Age: Average 10-12 years.   Strength: 48.2%
Summary: Bourbon Barrel refers to the unique type of cask used to hold bourbon whisky whose interior has been thoroughly charred. When used to age Hakushu key malts, the charred white oak wood lends the whisky an elegant aroma and sweet vanilla flavour. Smaller than other type of casks, these handcrafted 180-liter barrels are most susceptible to the surrounding atmosphere and produce whiskies that are distinctive to the region where they been aged.
Hakushu Bourbon Barrel is a superior single malt whisky made from carefully selected Hakushu malts. The distillery where these malts are crafted lies nested deep within the Hakushu forest, 700 meters above sea level, in the shadow of the southern Japanese Alps’ Mt. Kaikomagatake. The area’s cold climate is an essential ingredient that gives Hakushu malts their mild refreshing taste and crisp citrus aromas with a distinctive vanilla flavour that can be found only in a bourbon barrel-aged whisky. Try it straight up for a taste experience that is sure to last a lifetime.

Smaller than other type of casks, these handcrafted 180-liter barrels are most susceptible to the surrounding atmosphere and produce whiskies that are distinctive to the region where they been aged.
Yamazaki Bourbon Barrel is a superior single malt whisky made from carefully selected Yamazaki malts. The whisky is cradled in bourbon barrels and stored in aging cellars located in Japan’s Yamazaki and Oumi regions until it reaches the peak of maturity. It is here that nature paints a changing backdrop with a palette of seasonal colours and provides a warm moist climate to slowly nurture the whisky within the barrel. The result is a distinctively Japanese whisky with an uncommon aroma and smooth, lingering sweet flavour that only a bourbon barrel can impart. Try it straight up for a taste experience that is sure to last a lifetime.
Colour: dark amber;
Aroma: vanilla, honey and caramel;
Taste: robust, woody;
Finish: slightly sweet, pleasantly lingering.

Laphroaig - Cairdeas Origin 2012 Bottling

Laphroaig – Cairdeas Origin 2012 Bottling
Country: Scotland   Region: Islay
Age:    Strength: 51.2%
Summary: First released at the Feis Ile 2012, Laphroaig Cairdeas Origin was bottled to celebrate 18 years of the Friends of Laphroaig program. Combining the original liquid used to first create Cairdeas along with newer Laphroaig spirit that has been fully matured in quarter casks.
Although there is no age statement on the bottle, weve been told by those-in-the-know that Laphroaig Cairdeas is new spirit that was placed into small quarter casks, enjoying a very intense maturation for seven years, that was then blended (50:50) with another special whisky the chaps at Laphroaig had been quietly maturing for between 13 and 21 years old. Both whiskies were fine expressions of Laphroaig in their own right, but when blended together something exceptional emerged as befits this 18th anniversary of the FOL club.
Colour: Golden Barley.
Nose: Distinctly Laphroaig – iodine, peat, smoke etc. but with quite a bit of citrus (Orange & Apples) and a hint of creamy fudge.
Taste: A good mixture of Laphroaig medicinal, peat, slight ginger, apples and hints of vanilla sweetness.
Finish: Quite long with peat, iodine and chocolatey coffee.

Macallan - Diamond Jubilee Bottling

Macallan – Diamond Jubilee Bottling
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age:    Strength: 52%
Summary: This specially designed bottle bears a unique image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II created by the sculptor Arnold Machin. With only 2012 bottles available, and like their previous commemorative royal bottling’s, this edition is expected to be highly sought after by collectors from the worlds of whisky and art.
Nose: Vanilla is the first to show, sweet to a point, yet shows maturity. Citrus fruits hang on to the coattails, (orange, apple, hints of lemon), almost appear when they are required. The cask influences then appear, resinous, never overbearing, changing to show polished oak, aged, reminiscent of a once exquisite dining room.
Palate: Rich dried fruits open up to show their hand. Raisin drives the character in a non-nonsense manner. It is evident it is not alone, figs and dates, are the lesser players of the group. As they converse, treacle toffee takes a bow followed by the courtiers, ginger and clove. Like a finale the grand lady enters, Oak – refined, polished, elegant, overlooking all.
Finish: Long, meanders, in no hurry to leave.

Benriach - 1994 Cask # 4386

Benriach – 1994 Cask # 4386
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 19 Years   Strength: 55%
Summary: The BenRiach Distillery is located in the Heart of Speyside, between the village of Rothes and the town of Elgin, in the North-East of Scotland. The Spey Valley, in which the BenRiach Distillery was built by John Duff in 1898, is home to many of Scotlands great whiskies, but BenRiach has its own uniqueness borne from the particular methods and skills of the men who craft the whisky, the ingredients they use, the distinctive copper stills and the high quality barrels selected for maturation.
And, BenRiach boasts one further difference – standing apart from the other Spey Valley distilleries, the traditional floor maltings with their distinctive pagoda style chimneys can produce peated, malted barley, enabling the distillery to capture the defining taste of peat reek in a few of their special bottlings.
Cask Type: Virgin Oak Hogshead.
Cask Style: Virgin Oak finish.
Colour: Rich harvest gold.
Nose: A perfect balance of toasted oak spices and sweet barley. Waves of ripped fresh mint and sweet gooseberries add a delicate fruit background.
Taste: A powerful richly oaked character develops into waves of toasted coconut and fruit salad. Vanilla and barley sugar fill the mouth in the classically long sweet oak finish.

Cask Type: Butt.
Style: Classic Speyside.

Nose: 23 creaky old leather and dusty libraries… I feel quite at home; some spiced up juicy dates, too;
Taste: an engrossing experience: the grape is almost as fresh as it must have been way back in the days when Abba were topping the charts. The inevitable spices hold firm, setting into a rich fudge and mocha middle;
Finish: some vanillas and tannins peel off from the grape and it is the popping vanilla pods which have the very last say; Balance: it is impossible to ask any more of an old sherry cask from Benriach than this: quite magnificent.

Evan Williams - 23 Year Old Single Barrel Bourbon

Evan Williams – 23 Year Old Single Barrel Bourbon
Country: American   Region: American
Age: 23 Year Old   Strength: 53.50%
Summary: The Evan Williams Single Barrel is produced to honour Evan Williams who is, widely known as Kentucky’s first distiller. Born a Welshman, settled in Virginia and in 1780 moved to what became Kentucky, he grew crops, and he soon learnt that converting his corn and other grains to whiskey made them easily transportable and prevented the excess grain from rotting. Williams set up his small distillery on the Ohio River at the foot of what is now Fifth Street in Louisville. According to an article in the Louisville Courier-Journal of 29 April 1889, “Williams was a member of the early Board of Trustees of Louisville, …he never attended a meeting without bringing a bottle of his whiskey, and that was always drank.” He was censured every time for doing so, but he never left with a full jug ! He died in October of 1810.
Delicate aroma, with hints of spice, vanilla and some malty dried fruits. Initially slightly sweet, moving on with a touch of spice, citrus and apple and an edge of grain. Well-balanced and tight with some punch and an edge of rye appearing. Delicate touches of cocoa, more spice and a little butterscotch sweetness. Crisp and peppery at the end with a distinctive rye touch.

24 Year Old Invergordon - Berry's Own Selection

24 Year Old Invergordon – Berry’s Own Selection
Country: Scotland   Region: Lowland
Age:    Strength: 46%
Summary: Invergordon distillery is located on the shores of the Cromarty firth in the north-east Highlands of Scotland. Founded in 1959, it is the only grain distillery in the Highlands and for a few years also had the Ben Wyvis malt distillery on the site but this closed in 1975.
The nose gives toasted oak, apple and melon skins with an uplifting menthol note. There is some honeyed depth and cinnamon spice. The palate is beautifully expansive with bourbon cask notes, buttery vanilla and cream caramel. The delivery is almost angelic and long lingering.

Ardbeg - 10 Year Old Single Malt

Ardbeg – 10 Year Old Single Malt
Country: Scotland   Region: Islay
Age: 10 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: Ardbeg Ten Years Old is revered around the world as the peatiest, smokiest, most complex single malt of them all. Yet it does not flaunt the peat; rather it gives way to the natural sweetness of the malt to produce a whisky of perfect balance.
Typically most whiskies are chill-filtered and reduced to a strength of 40% ABV. Ardbeg Ten Years Old, however, is non chill-filtered and has a strength of 46% ABV, thus retaining maximum flavour, at the same time giving more body and added depth. It’s whisky with none of the goodness taken out!
Colour: Light gold.
Aroma: A burst of intense smoky fruit escapes into the atmosphere – peat infused with zesty lemon and lime, wrapped in waxy dark chocolate.
Bold menthol and black pepper slice through the sweet smoke followed by tarry ropes and graphite. As you dip your nose in further, savour the aroma of smoked fish and crispy bacon alongside green bell peppers, baked pineapple and pear juice.
Add water and breathe in the vortex of aromas rising from the glass. An oceanic minerality brings a breath of cool, briny seaspray on chalky cliffs. Waxed lemon and lime follows with coal tar soap, beeswax and herby pine woodlands. Toasted vanilla and sizzling cinnamon simmer in the background with warm hazelnut and almond toffee.
Taste: An explosion of crackling peat sets off millions of flavour explosions on the tongue: peat effervesces with tangy lemon and lime juice, black pepper pops with sizzling cinnamon-spiced toffee. This is followed by a wave of brine infused with smooth buttermilk, ripe bananas and currants. Smoke gradually wells up on the palate bringing a mouthful of warm creamy cappuccino and toasted marshmallows. As the taste lengthens and deepens, dry espresso, liquorice root and tarry smoke develop coating the palate with chewy peat oils.
Finish: The finish goes on and on – long and smoky with tarry espresso, aniseed, toasted almonds and traces of soft barley and fresh pear.

20 Year Old Glen Moray - Berry's Own Selection

20 Year Old Glen Moray – Berry’s Own Selection
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 20 Year Old   Strength: 57.3%
Summary: Nose: a lovely intertwining of polished oaky floors and muscavado-polished barley;
Taste: deliveries on the palate rarely come more delicious than this: Glen Moray, when on form, is in the true malty elite of Scotland and here it tops the Premier League. The blend of sugars, some honeyed, spices and cocoa make you groan with pleasure;
Finish: the vanilla and butterscotch kick in as you suspect they might. But the barley remains steadfast and clean;
Balance: I have long regarded Berry’s whisky buyer Dougie McIvor one of the genuinely understated gems of the industry and the best whisky writer we never had. Here he demonstrates his understanding of clean, barley-rich malts which has made this year’s crop of Berry’s Own Selection arguably their best yet. When you taste this you can see why I exploded in rage at the deficiencies of the official ‘Distillery manager’ bottling a few years back…
