Tasting Notes – Glencadam 22 Year Old / The Rare Casks / Release 4

Release 4 in the Rare Casks series is a stunning Highland malt from the Glencadam distillery.

Distilled in 1991 and aged in a refill bourbon cask for 22 years, this once mothballed distillery was brought back to life in 2003 and is the only existing distillery in the region of Angus.

Nose: Pale straw colour. Woody, toffee fudge, hints of mint.

Palate: Smooth and creamy. Sweet icing sugar tingle on the tongue. Slightly sherried which is a surprise!

Finish: Heady shades of powerful long spice n’ pepper.

Overall: Not as fiery as I thought it would be. Instead it displays a really nice balance of sweet n’ pepper with a mildly dry finish. The 55% packs a powerful punch! A full-bodied but gentle giant of a dram!

Tasting Notes – Ben Nevis 16 Year Old / The Rare Casks / Release 3

The Release 3 in the Rare Casks Series is Ben Nevis from the Highlands of Scotland.

Distilled in 1997 and aged for 16 years in a single sherry hogshead, the whisky has been bottled at natural cask strength without chill filtering or colour additives.

Ben Nevis 16 Year Old / The Rare Casks / Release 3

Nose: Intense dark sherry colour. Vanilla, caramel and butterscotch.

Palate: Smooth, sweet and creamy. Fruit cake mixture, stewed fruits and chocolate.

Finish: Peppery spice, thick stewed fruit. The spice is long but tapers out nicely. Barely a touch of dryness.

Overall: A substantial, robust, muscled dram. As with all these cask strength whiskies, it packs a punch! An amazing mixture of flavours that you would expect from a much older malt.

These casks tannins have added new layers of rich complexity to our own elegant, floral Bruichladdich whisky. This is a spirit to give pause, to reflect on. A spirit as much for the mind as for the palate. Character: Curvaceous, buxom, captivating yet elegant with a silky texture that is divine. Colour: Mahogany/ bronze. Nose: The opening notes are of marinated pears, apricot, mango, spicy apple; then drifts of dark chocolate orange and espresso coffee can be detected together with vanilla-rich toffee. Edencroft	Bruichladdich – Islay Barley 2006 Country: Scotland Region: Islay Age: Strength: 50% Summary: This is the second release in the Uber-Provenance Islay Barley Series – whisky that is very dear to our hearts. This spirit has been distilled from barley grown by our partner farmers (and good friends) here on Islay specifically for Bruichladdich – a link with the land and terroir of this great island that had been lost, broken for many years. Now once again the salt sea spray lashed fields of Islay are producing the raw material for our distinctive island single malt – this release made from barley grown on the eastern side of the island on jubilee field at the place known as the “headland of the gallows”, on Dunlossit farm. Character: The texture of the spirit is remarkably smooth for such a youngster. The mouth feel is quite irresistible; it’s fresh and zesty with the quality of the Islay-grown barley unrestrained by the presence of a long relationship with the oak. Edencroft	Bruichladdich – Cuvee 382: La Berenice Country: Scotland Region: Islay Age: 21 Year Old Strength: 46% Summary: This American-oak-aged Bruichladdich has been further matured in casks that previously contained the lush sweet white wines of two of the greatest chateaux of Barsac and Sauternes. Casks that have held wine from grapes grown to honeyed intensity from some of the most blessed plots of Bordeaux, now meet classic Bruichladdich spirit that has slumbered in our dank, dark loch-side warehouses for two decades. Character: A sensuous, decadent and flirtatious whisky with more than a hint of forbidden fruit. Colour: Brilliant copper/ hazelnut/ wild honeycomb/ antique gold.
