Glenlochy / Cadenheads Edition 17 Year Old / 1977 Vintage Country: Scotland Region: Highlands Age: Strength: 61.8% Summary: Founded in 1898 by David McAndies, The Glenlochy Distillery commenced production in 1901, and it had been part of Diageo from 1953 until its transfer to Scotish Malt Distilleries Co. Production ceased in 1983, when the distillery was definitely mothballed, just like so many others in that decade. The premises have been acquired by a local hotel group, West Coast Inns Ltd, that developed the site commercially, only retaining the kiln and the pagoda roof, which are declared historic buildings. The house style is fruity, verging towards sweet, exotic fruitiness and coconut, vanilla and honey characters. The peat is delicate, and soft. Barring a few independent bottlings (such as Gordon & MacPhail's) and an edition in Diageo's Rare Malts series, distillery bottlings are extremely rare and hard to find. Nose: Coffee; leafy. Palate: Green, floral, fresh. Another good cask with plenty of the grassy freshness the distillery was famed for. |

Glenglassaugh / Rare Cask Batch 1 / Cask # 7801 Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: 38 Years Old Strength: 42.4%. Summary: Glenglassaugh Distillery was founded in 1875 by James Moir, a local general store owner. Elgin architects Reid and Melvin designed the distillery and William Sellar of Keith was recruited to plan out the plant. The initial annual production of the distillery was 100,000 gallons.Robertson and Baxter were major customers who supplied spirit to Teacher's for blending and in 1892 purchased the distillery for £10000, who then sold it to Highland Distillers for a £5000 profit. Highland Distillers rebuilt the distillery in 1960, it was later mothballed in 1986. In 2008 the distillery was purchased by The Scaent Group and re-opened. Cask Size and Type: Moscatel Hogshead. Finish: Moscatel Finish. Appearance: Summer harvest gold. Nose: An initial suggestion of boiled sweets with a spearmint warmth gently flows to soft mango, caramelised green pears and cracked black pepper. Palate: Delicate fruit salad balanced with a warm black pepper spice softens to waves of gentle orchard fruits, rich oak and a beautiful fresh barley finish. |

Glenglassaugh / Torfa (peated) Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: Strength: 50%. Summary: At Glenglassaugh, in addition to the traditional production, they also produce a very limited quantity of whisky using richly peated malted barley as the cereal varietal. The malted barley has been dried in the traditional way, over peat infused kilns, giving the whisky its unique smoky flavour. Glenglassaugh ‘Torfa’, with its peaty, phenolic nature, is a unique expression, and is quite different to the usual style of whisky produced in the Highlands. Cask Formula: Fully matured in ex-bourbon barrels. Peat level is 20 ppm. Appearance: Gleaming yellow gold. Nose: Vivid, sweet, sooty campfire smoke and sea air infuses zest of lime, apricot jam and ripe soft fruits; all gently warmed by hints of stem ginger and cracked black pepper. Palate: An eloquent, sweet coastal peat smoke engulfs candied peel over melon, pineapple and roasted red apples. Oat biscuits, hints of heather honey and a gentle cigar box spice all combine to give a terrific balance to the expressive smoky character. Finish: A heady, yet elegant harmony of distinct coastal peat and striking spiced fruit flavours. |

Paul John / Brilliance Country: Indian Region: Indian Age: Strength: 46%. Summary: A non-peated Indian Single Malt Whisky. Nose: a complex amalgam of nougat, spotted dog pudding (sans sultanas!) and orange blossom honey with the vanilla spinning tangled webs just beneath. Honey is captured as the bourbon element expands; a delicate gristiness ushers in a freshness to the custard tart; Taste: the mouth feel exudes star quality with the barley generating all kinds of juicy riches with the light Demerara sugars forming an elegant accompaniment. A coppery spine is soon carrying the barley in varied forms while a gorgeous cocoa sub strata heralds in the spices which buzz the taste buds at will; Finish: beautifully relaxed: a light tingle from the spices pulses contentedly, the vanillas gather in deeper intensity yet the barley and copper stretches to the end; Balance: yet another astonishing malt from India. 94.5 Points / Jim Murray's 2015 Whisky Bible. |

Paul John / Classic Select Cask Country: Indian Region: Indian Age: Strength: 55.2%. Summary: The Paul John Classic Select Malt is the taster's expression with a high nod in bright finish. Every sniff and sip wind-sweeps the mystique of the meandering waterways and tales of yore, wafting from the oceanfront coast of Goa. This Classic Select Cask is distantly handcrafted and non-chilled filtered, in chaste tradition, aged undisturbed in American White-Oak ex Bourbon barrels. Nose: Like Brilliance, but turned up a notch. More vanilla, more cake batter, more fruity sweets and more spice. Stacks of cereal, with rolled oats, freshly milled barley and lots of fruit – apples, pears and hints of the more tropical: pineapples and Refresher chews (without the fizzy sherbert middle). With that there is sweet lemon drizzle cake, window putty and a light gluey note, as well as sweet pastry cream. Palate: Sharp cinnamon up front: fireball gobstoppers and Hot Tamales. It calms down to show off apple sauce and sweet vanilla, as well as spiced, heavily buttered pastry with a grind of black pepper. Behind that, squirty cream from a can on top of a bag of Haribo. Water kills the heat and ups the sweetness, revealing caraway and spirity notes, along with even more vanilla. Finish: Haribo fruitiness fades to spicy oak. |

Compass Box – Last Vatted Malt Country: Scotland Region: IslaySpeyside Age: Strength: 53.7% Summary: This special limited edition bottling is a valedictory farewell to the Vatted Malt, one delivered with honour and pride. This whisky is made from a marriage of fine, old single malt whiskies from Islay and Speyside distilleries. It combines intense aromas and flavours of dried fruits and maltiness underscored by a subtle, sweet smokiness, all robed in the revealing signs of whiskies of antiquity. Only 1,323 bottles have been released for sale. Nose: the work of both oak and the peat kiln appear to be well matched here. Though perhaps it is the orange blossom and pear fruitiness that really makes the heart skip a beat; Taste: a sublime delivery. The Compass Boz marque of oakiness is stamped prominently, but couched this time by a stunning mix of creamcocoa, lightly sweetened by Demerara. Improbably, half way in there is a steady stream of juicy barley…about the same time you notice how well balanced the smoke is: like a great football referee, you dont actually notice him being there, but makes all else run beautifully; Finish: doesnt try to develop. Just allows the elements that make up this complex whisky the space to run their own course…; Balance: being an American, Compass Box founder and blender, John Glaser, knows a thing or two about pouring two fingers of whisky. So I join John in raising two fingers to the SWA and toast them in the spirit they deserve to thank them for their single-minded and successful quest to outlaw this ancient whisky term. Each bottle personally signed by John Glaser. |

Compass Box – Oak Cross Vatted Malt Country: Scotland Region: Blended Age: Strength: 43% Summary: They call this malt whisky Oak Cross because it offers the best characteristics of both American and French oak aging. A rich, medium-bodied malt whisky, Oak Cross combines vanilla characters from American oak and spicy, clove-like characters from French oak. Flavour Descriptors: on the palate, notes of clove and vanilla accent a sweet maltiness and subtle fruit character. Recommendations: Suitable as an aperitif served with a chilled water in the winter months. Full enough to serve as a summertime digestif. Excellent match for many cheeses. Distillery Sourcing: made entirely of Highland single malt whiskies led by Teaninich and balanced with malts from the villages of Brora (for fruitiness) and Carron (for weight). All 10 to 12 years-old. Wood: all the whiskies are aged for their primary maturation in a mix of American oak cask types. The marrying casks are a mix of first-fill Bourbon barrels and our proprietary “Oak Cross” casks made of American and new French oaks. Bottling Details: bottled at 43%. Not chill filtered. Natural colour. |

Compass Box – Spice Tree Vatted Malt Country: Scotland Region: Blended Age: Strength: 46% Summary: As in the past, The Spice Tree is 100% malt whisky sourced from northern Highland distilleries, (notably and primarily malt whisky distilled at the Clynelish distillery). The primary maturation is in a mix of first-fill and refill American oak. Nose: quite paradoxical,. First sniff and you think: "whoa! Thats a big-un." Then you nose again, slowly and carefully you realise that whilst the nose does seem superficially big, it is actually made up of dozens of tiny aromas ganging together. The main theme is delicate tangerine and vanilla – almost like tangerine yogurt – but there are weightier spices to note, all of them fragments, especially the watery allspice and ginger…sublime. Taste: and now the palate continues with exactly the same theme: a million little flavour explosions, all timed to go off one after the other, but all on a sweet muscovado sugar bed created by the superb base malt of Clynelish. Finish: thins rapidly into a more basic vanilla, though there is still a spice pulse and glow; just a little bitter at the death. Balance: having initially been chopped down by the SWA, who were indignant that extra staves had been inserted into the casks, The Spice Tree is not only back but in full bloom. Indeed, the blossom on this, created by the use of fresh oak barrel heads, is more intoxicating than its predecessor – mainly because there is a more even and less dramatic personality to this. Not just a great malt, but a serious contender for Jim Murray Whisky Bible 2011 World Whisky of the Year. |

The finish is very long, echoing peat and smoke for several minutes. Recommendations: a fantastic late-night digestif malt whisky. Also suitable for taking the chill off a cold day. Excellent with blue vein cheeses. Distillery Sourcing: Islay single malts from the village of Port Askaig as well as some south shore whisky (as of late 2007); and Ardmore. All aged from 10-16 years. Douglas Laing – The Christmas 2011 Big Peat Country: Scotland Region: Islay Age: Strength: 57.8% Summary: HISTORICALLY WE CALL THIS – WHISPER IT – A VATTED MALT, BLONDE IN THE BOTTLE – BUT WITH A BIG PEAT KICK A SMALL BATCH BOTTLING TRADITIONALLY UNCHILL FILTERED CONTAINING ONLY ISLAY MALT WHISKIES! But what exactly is a Vatted Malt? It is what the Scotch Whisky industry has traditionally called “a marriage of Malts”. Big Peat contains Malt Whisky ONLY from the island of Islay – some say it’s the ultimate taste of Islay! Big Peat is a feisty Islay character has a sweet side too – ‘he’ carries a big peaty (“phenolic”), beachy, oceanic, rather ashy selection of malts only from the island of Islay. We do not chill filter – we prefer a more old fashioned traditional approach – so you will detect a massive amplification of sea-faring qualities on the nose, palate, and finish Nose: just one of those noses where it takes a tremendous act of will to put the glass down…the interplay between the salts and sugars, the counterweights between the different varieties of phenols themselves; Taste: when the delivery strikes home with the oils, phenols and sugars in immediate harmony, you know you are in for an experience. The question is: can it keep this quality to the end? Finish: …indeed it can! In fact, it improves and so complex and tantalising are those astonishing Demerara and peaty riches, it is hard to quite know where the end begins. A number of teasing bourbon tones, on the liquorice and hickory side – perhaps with a hint of honey – stokes the fireside complexity further…; Balance: I haven’t got a television these days as my life is simply too busy. And with entertainment like this in the glass to keep you occupied, who needs one…? I doubt if any Christmas special on the box came remotely close to matching this…! |

24 Year Old Invergordon – Berry’s Own Selection Country: Scotland Region: Lowland Age: Strength: 46% Summary: Invergordon distillery is located on the shores of the Cromarty firth in the north-east Highlands of Scotland. Founded in 1959, it is the only grain distillery in the Highlands and for a few years also had the Ben Wyvis malt distillery on the site but this closed in 1975. The nose gives toasted oak, apple and melon skins with an uplifting menthol note. There is some honeyed depth and cinnamon spice. The palate is beautifully expansive with bourbon cask notes, buttery vanilla and cream caramel. The delivery is almost angelic and long lingering. |

23 Year Old Bunnahabhain – Berry’s Own Selection Country: Scotland Region: Islay Age: Strength: 51.4% Summary: Bunnahabhain translates as “mouth of the river” from the gaelic, the river in question being the Margadale which flows into the Sound of Islay near to the distillery. Although generally a more lightly peated Islay this expression is an exception as it was produced from a batch of stock using barley at a higher level of peat-smoke exposure. The nose gives noticeable smoky notes with a little marzipan, some jute cloth and spice. The fruity palate is layered, rich with building sooty intensity as the flavours displayed on the nose develop. This is beautifully intense with a classy lingering finish. |

37 Year Old Glen Grant – Berry’s Own Selection Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: 37 Year Old Strength: 47.8% Summary: Nose: at 54, am I too old to swoon? That near perfection of thick grape infused with the essence of barley malt. The sugars are mere hints: grist here, honeydew melon there. And all emboldened by a smattering of herb and not overly antagonistic spice; Taste: the spices are more upfront now. But before they get a chance to really soar, molten honey fills the palate and dispenses grape in its cleanest form; the middle is a marvellous mix of coconut and raisin chocolate; Finish: maybe suffering from not quite knowing where the middle ends and the end begins. But there is no bitterness, no oak trying to have the last say at the cost of all else. Just a slow denouement, perhaps with a sprig of mint attached, of all else that has gone before; Balance: when I come across an unspoiled nugget like this, a malt of timeless magnificence, then the whisky world seems such a wonderful place in which to live. Those responsible for Scotland’s whisky future could do worse than invest in a bottle and see what steps have to be taken to continue this glittering tradition. Certainly, the casks which have gone into this bottling represent a high water – or is it grape juice? – mark for Scotch single malt whisky. |

20 Year Old Glen Moray – Berry’s Own Selection Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: 20 Year Old Strength: 57.3% Summary: Nose: a lovely intertwining of polished oaky floors and muscavado-polished barley; Taste: deliveries on the palate rarely come more delicious than this: Glen Moray, when on form, is in the true malty elite of Scotland and here it tops the Premier League. The blend of sugars, some honeyed, spices and cocoa make you groan with pleasure; Finish: the vanilla and butterscotch kick in as you suspect they might. But the barley remains steadfast and clean; Balance: I have long regarded Berry’s whisky buyer Dougie McIvor one of the genuinely understated gems of the industry and the best whisky writer we never had. Here he demonstrates his understanding of clean, barley-rich malts which has made this year’s crop of Berry’s Own Selection arguably their best yet. When you taste this you can see why I exploded in rage at the deficiencies of the official ‘Distillery manager’ bottling a few years back… |

38 Year Old Glenlivet – Berry’s Own Selection Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: 38 Year Old Strength: 48.6% Summary: Nose: despite the fact it pulses antiquity this remains sprightly and nubile, the barley absolutely fizzing on the nose. A few shards of honey offer weight and resonance to the citrus; Taste: demands a mouth-watering delivery after that nose, and that is exactly what you get. The spices flock to the scene so the taste buds are at once drowned, caressed and burnt alive…; Finish: long, with a slow devaluation of the sugars as the vanillas take command; Balance: about as salivating a near 40-year-old you are likely to find! © Jim Murrays – 2013 Whisky Bible. |

20 Year Old Littlemill – Berry’s Own Selection Country: Scotland Region: Lowland Age: Strength: 54.9% Summary: Littlemill distillery was founded at Bowling to the east of Glasgow on the banks of the river Clyde in the 1770’s and laid claim to being Scotland’s oldest distillery. It was dismantled in 1997 and the remaining buildings destroyed by a fire in 2004. The nose gives white chocolate and peach skins with traces of ginger, cinnamon and delicate peat. The palate comes alive with nectarines and more white chocolate as the mouth-feel fattens to release some honey and lemon. When excellent examples such as this appear they make Littlemill’s sad demise even sadder. |

Bunnahabhain – 1989 Berry’s Own Selection Country: Scotland Region: Islay Age: Strength: 51.4% Summary: Bunnahabhain translates as “mouth of the river” from the gaelic, the river in question being the Margadale which flows into the Sound of Islay near to the distillery. |

Glen Grant – 1974 Berry’s Own Selection Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: 37 Year Old Strength: 47.8% Summary: Nose: at 54, am I too old to swoon? |

Glen Moray – 1991 Berry’s Own Selection Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: 21 Year Old Strength: 57.3% Summary: Nose: a lovely intertwining of polished oaky floors and muscavado-polished barley; Taste: deliveries on the palate rarely come more delicious than this: Glen Moray, when on form, is in the true malty elite of Scotland and here it tops the Premier League.

Glenlivet – 1973 Berry’s Own Selection Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: 38 Year Old Strength: 48.6% Summary: Nose: despite the fact it pulses antiquity this remains sprightly and nubile, the barley absolutely fizzing on the nose. |

Littlemill – 1992 Berry’s Own Selection Country: Scotland Region: Lowland Age: Strength: 54.9% Summary: Littlemill distillery was founded at Bowling to the east of Glasgow on the banks of the river Clyde in the 1770’s and laid claim to being Scotland’s oldest distillery. |
