Tasting Notes – Master Of Malt 60 Year Old Speyside (1st Edition)

Master Of Malt 60 Year Old Speyside (1st Edition)

Nose: Woody, caramel, raisins and a hint of soft fruits.

Palate: I was expecting wood but, surprisingly, that’s very muted. Light caramel, spice, sweet plump raisins garnished with nutmeg.

Finish: Quite tanin, long finish, long pleasantly balanced spice combined with tobacco.

Overall: A well defined quality dram, certainly something a bit special. An occasion dram waiting for the right occasion. But then, that occasion could be very swiftly found!

But demand for scotch collapsed when the principle purchaser of Benromach’s malt whisky Pattison‘s of Leith went bankrupt and Benromach Distillery sat silent as the next decade rolled by. Intermittent production followed until major investment and refurbishment in the 1960s and 1970s turned Benromach into a thoroughly modern Speyside malt whisky distillery, only to close again in 1983. Distilled March 1972 and bottled August 2011. Previous bottlings of this vintage from Gordon & MacPhail have been sublime. Caperdonich Caperdonich Distillery was founded in 1897 and its two stills were fired up a year later. Caperdonich Distillery was situated beside the North of Scotland Railway in the north west corner of Rothes in Scotland’s Speyside whisky region and was established at a time when whisky sales were on the up and up. But Caperdonich Distillery opened just as whisky sales crashed and subsequent wars and prohibition inhibited its recovery. And having closed in 1902 it remained mothballed until 1965 when the stills were fired up once again. It closed once more in 2002, and now that we have finally come to appreciate the complexity and depth of Caperdonich malt whisky …… demolished in 2011. Distilled September 2010 and bottled October 2010 by Gordon MacPhail for the Connoisseurs Choice range. Port Ellen Port Ellen Distillery was established by Alexander K. Mackay on the southern coast of the Isle of Islay at Port Ellen in 1825. Port Ellen was a malt whisky distillery but closed in 1983 and whilst the distillery buildings remain Port Ellen drum maltings occupy part of the site and participates in Feis Ile, the annual Islay Festival of Malt and Music. Most recent official bottling of Port Ellen single malt whisky was the Port Ellen 11thRelease. During the winter of 1823-24 James Fox tested his newly designed spirit safe at Port Ellen Distillery prior to its introduction in all Scottish licenced distilleries by 1825 in order to comply with enactment of the Excise Act of 1823. Master of Malt Stock Diamond Jubilee Whisky

Glen Grant 60 Diamond Jubilee Whisky

Well that’s timing!

Hot on the heels of my blog announcing the release of a very special whisky – matured for 60 years, and bottled in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (see below); Master of Malt have just let me know that they now stock it!

That was quick!

Bottled on 2nd February 2012, and distilled on 2nd February 1952, this whisky has matured in a Sherry cask for a full 60 years, making it one of the oldest whiskies ever released for sale. The whisky has been bottled by legendary Scottish Bottlers Gordon and Macphail.

The whisky is packaged in a beautiful handmade decanter, individually numbered (only 85 decanters are available worldwide), and is sure to become a collector’s item almost immediately.

Master of Malt have compiled tasting notes for the whisky, which read as follows:

Nose: Rich malt, an apple-y freshness which belies its age. A good hit of really decent honey is followed on the tail by cinnamon and allspice.

Palate: Initially slightly mineralic – reminiscent of a well-aged Riesling, as the honey from the nose powers through again. The freshness from the nose is still here – an absolutely magnificently juicy dram. Freshly-picked cherries join the apple, but there’s no hint of them having been stewed, these are fresh as a daisy.

Finish: The official tasting notes for this make mention of the fact that this whisky bitters out towards the end. I don’t get that at all. The freshness powers through, bringing still more of that tangy, sweet goodness with it. The spices make themselves more known towards the death, with the Cinnamon and Allspice being joined by just a touch of the Clove.

Overall: An absolutely magnificent whisky. As with previous ‘very well aged’ G&M bottlings, the surprise is how incredibly fresh and juicy it has remained. Were a dram of this presented to ‘her-for-whom-it-was-bottled’, we’d like to think she’d get on with it very well. Kudos, G&M.
