Aberlour “Casg Annamh” – The Latest Premium Single Malt!

August 2, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

Casg Annamh is a distinctively rich Single Malt

Speyside distillery, Aberlour, has released its latest premium Single Malt, Casg Annamh, to provide adventurous malt lovers with the ideal introduction to Sherry cask matured whiskies.

Influenced by the finest quality, hand-selected Oloroso Sherry casks

With its distinctive Sherry signature, the new expression highlights Aberlour’s commitment to choosing the best casks and maturing liquid of the highest quality to provide a deep and satisfying taste experience.

Translating as ‘Rare Cask’ in Gaelic, Casg Annamh has been created in small batches from a limited number of carefully selected casks. Rare and hard to obtain, the Oloroso Sherry casks have a significant influence on the liquid and perfectly complement Aberlour’s distillate flavour, bringing sweet and rich notes.

Casg Annamh is a tribute to our craftsmen’s passion for sherry and their expertise when it comes to creating a rare and fine Single Malt. We carefully hand-pick our Oloroso Sherry casks from traditional Sherry bodegas in Spain, making sure the wood has exactly the right combination of aromatic qualities for Aberlour.

The end result is a distinctively rich and fruity finish which we’re confident will offer something new and exciting for those looking to explore the Single Malt category.
– Graeme Cruickshank: Aberlour’s Master Distiller

Aberlour’s premium and craft credentials are upheld by Casg Annamh, which comes with Graeme Cruickshank’s signature, a wax capsule bottle, and is part of a small batch production. It will be available to purchase at retailers across the globe, with a RRP of around £53.50.

Tasting notes:

Nose: Rich and sweet with fruity notes of tangy orange, glazed cherries, raisins and a hint of ginger.

Palate: Sweet and fruity flavours of apple and cinnamon crumble and ripe peaches balanced with spicy notes of liquorice and cloves.

Finish: Long and rich. Fruity with a touch of dry spice.

Balcones / Baby Blue Corn Whisky / Batch #bb10-19
Balcones / Baby Blue Corn Whisky / Batch #bb10-19

£ 32.50
Country: American
Region: American
Age:
Strength: 46.%
70cl

Summary: Baby Blue is not only Texas’ first whisky, but so far we know the only blue corn whisky made anywhere. It pays homage to the American whisky tradition and while adding something we think is new and innovative.
Balcones Baby Blue is made from 100% roasted Hopi blue corn. The Hopi have used it as a staple for thousands of years. Their origin mythology describes how the Creator gave the first people corn of many types, and the Hopi received the blue corn. The Hopi use blue corn as a major food source, but it has spiritual significance for them as well. It is used in many ceremonies representing long life, wisdom, understanding, and the strength that comes through overcoming hardship.
While Hopi blue corn we use has an extremely interesting history, there is really only reason one we prefer it to all other corn for our whisky– taste. Its gorgeous midnight blue kernels are packed with a rich, roasty nuttiness that is truly exceptional. Unlike most of the blue corn on the market, Hopi blue corn is not just white dent corn which has been specially crossed to give it a blue tint. There is a lot of quality corn in this category, even some nice organic examples. But in a blind taste test, we could not tell the blue from the white corn. Hopi blue corn, however, has been grown with the same rich colour and flavour for thousands of years and is the only corn that could impart the rich character we require for our whisky.
Americans have innovated the use of corn in whisky since we first set foot on this continent. Baby Blue is not white lighting nor bourbon. It has the freshness and verve of a traditional corn whisky but with a refined complexity added by brief aging in small oak barrels. It has a round nuttiness and roasty overtones with a smooth finish. By legal definitions it could be labelled as a bourbon, but it is not essentially a bourbon in character. Bourbon is largely dominated by the flavours of the wood in the barrel; the new charred oak barrels give bourbon is defining and recognizable flavours, colour and aroma. Our brief aging in oak certainly contributes some of the recognizable oak notes and characteristic of bourbon, but these flavours do not dominate the rich corn flavours we have taken so much trouble to impart to the spirit. In any case, bourbon drinkers, as well as other whisky drinkers, will find plenty here to like.
Tasting Notes: butter, masa corn meal, marzipan/toasted almonds, smoked chillies, dark chocolate, fresh baked bread aroma Our unique aging process encourages a maturation that is surprisingly balanced and smooth for such a young whisky…young whisky with an old soul. Best enjoyed neat, with a little cool water, or even on ice.
Country/Region: USA/Texas.

Summary: Country/Region: Welsh.
Unit: 70cl.
ABV: 59%.
Penderyn have announced the release of their popular Port Wood finish whisky in a single cask edition.   Only 231 bottles of the Port Wood-matured Single Cask will be produced, and because the bottles contain whisky from specially selected cask No. PT72, their unique characteristics will remain distinctive and unmatched. The whisky is bottled at a cask strength of 59% and is presented in a handmade American Oak box.  Each bottle is hand labelled, numbered and individually signed by our director, Sian Whitelock.  The bottle and box are finished in a cream stencilling.
Tasting Notes: The rich ruby red colour of this Penderyn port cask matured whisky does not disappoint! The initial nose is one of rich port and fresh red berry fruits. Soon spiciness and fresh oak chime in. The overall effect is both complex and intensely fruity. In the mouth this whisky is both very sweet and mouth drying at the same time while revealing a rich ruby port flavour. Smooth and easy to drink yet we recommend sipping it gently to enjoy its complexity and port flavour. Few port wood matured whiskies are as intense as this one. It leaves a long lingering finish rich in fruit, vanilla and milk chocolate. Savour the moment!

Summary: Country/Region: Welsh.
Unit: 70cl.
ABV: 41%.
As this is Rugby World Cup year we are delighted to announce the launch of Penderyn’s fourth in the series 'Icons of Wales' called simply 'That Try'.
That Try recounts the highlights of the match that took place on 27th January 1973 in a packed Cardiff Arms Park, when the All Blacks’ wing Bryan Williams kicked a high ball into the Barbarians twenty-two, little did he think that less than thirty astonishing seconds later the Baa-Baas would score the greatest try ever seen. The edition, which features a specially commissioned drawing of Gareth on the black bottle, and comes in a handsome black and white box to match the famous Baa-baas kit, is a Peated Single Malt Whisky at 41% abv.
This memorable moment in sporting history has been recounted with the full approval, and by kind permission, of the Barbarian Football Club, whose famous colours and distinctive badge have been the hallmark for fair play and open rugby for the past 125 years. They have committed all royalty fees relating to this product to a charity of their choice.
Tasting Notes: Mild aromas of peat smoke, early morning at the rocky seaside and warm marmalade-on-toast all compete for our attention.  A very fresh and clean whisky, beautifully distilled gives pleasure from the very first sip.  In the mouth it begins with great sweetness before the smoky, slightly medicinal flavours descend.  Slight bitterness follows that leaves a long and lingering fresh taste in the mouth.

Coinciding with the opening of Scotland’s ‘Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival’ today (1st to the 5th May), this permanent exhibition is free-of-charge to all visitors features the world-first series of stunning super-macro images, unveiled earlier this year by Aberlour.

These images were shot by David Maitland, a world renowned, specialist super-macro photographer.

Super-macro photography allows the subject to be captured closer than ever before and the result in this case was an eye-catching portfolio of intricate images.

Among these striking visuals are those which delve inside a grain of barley, bring to life the hidden pattern of the oak sherry cask and showcase the kaleidoscopic patterns of the crystalline structure of the spirit itself.

Nikki Burgess, Global Brand Director for Aberlour, said: “David’s photos have brilliantly captured the coming together of the natural elements and the expert craftsmanship of our distillers, while also maintaining the enigma behind the award-winning taste of Aberlour.”

The outdoor whisky gallery can be found at the Aberlour Distillery in the heart of Scotland’s Speyside region, halfway between Inverness and Aberdeen.

Malted Barley

Malted Barley

A world-first series of super-macro images of whisky unveils the enigma behind the expert craft and natural beauty of the premium single malt, Aberlour.

Aberlour commissioned David Maitland, one of the world’s foremost nature photographers, to chart the journey of the whiskys creation taking in microscopic views of the rock, water and wood used in the whisky-making process.

Subjects include the granite mountain from where the distillery takes its spring water, the oak staves from specially selected casks in which the whisky is matured, and finally uncovering never-before-seen glimpses of the single malt itself.

The photography uses a variety of techniques to capture some of the natural elements that contribute to the unique flavour of this single malt Scotch, from a glimpse inside each grain of barley to the actual rings from an oak cask and the crystalline structure of the final spirit itself.

The positioning of the distillery at the foot of Ben Rinnes, and surrounded by the natural water springs, plays a vital part in the creation of each bottle of single malt, as do the casks in which the whisky is aged.

Davids photos have shown beyond the glass and cask and allowed us an insight into the natural elements and distillers craft which are vital to the creation of this enigmatic single malt.

The six images are described below (click on the links to view):-

  • Pink mountain granite from Ben Rinnes: water runs down Ben Rinnes over this impervious material which maintains the water’s purity and softness before it rises in springs close to the distillery
  • Spring water, soft and fresh, rising in the Birkenbush Wood and exclusively used for making the Aberlour single malt range
  • Malted Barley: specially prepared to provide the key sugars from which the whisky to be distilled – the platform for its unique flavour
  • Sherry cask: special oak casks sourced from Spain in which the spirit makes its transformation into Scotch whisky, made from European oak whose open grain has an unique influence during the years of maturation
  • The rich and sweet ‘Aberlour 12-year-old’ award winning single malt
  • A’bunadh: Aberlour’s expertly hand-crafted and uncompromising cask strength single malt

Country: Scotland   Region: Lowland
Age: 21 Year Old   Strength: 55.7%
Summary: Nose: honeycomb on speed: sharp, toasty, crispy sweet; lime on vanilla ice cream;
Taste: although the oak has dug in and makes an early impact, the spreading of what appears to be soft corn oils helps the ever-intensifying sugars to see off the underlying toastiness;
Finish: the sugars are now crystalline and persistent;
Balance: astonishingly invigorating. Leaps from the glass with intent and purpose. Wonderful!

Glenlossie - 9 Year Old Managers Choice

Glenlossie – 9 Year Old Managers Choice
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 9 Year Old   Strength: 59.10%
Summary: Nose: a delicate trace of lime to the barley: what an understated, fragile, uber sexy nose…;
Taste: unusual in that the first wave on delivery appears to be a thin, oily note. This is promptly followed by the young barley water, threatening a sharpness but dampened by the lightest scattering of icing sugar; mouth watering, and youthful;
Finish: even with the custard powder arrival, never a hint of anything that is remotely non kindergarten;
Balance: one of the most impressive examples of Speyside malt, apparently not even out of nappies but treating you to a spectacular display of barley in all its beauty. Confirmation, barley needed, that with Clynelish, this has to be Diageo’s most under-rated distillery.

Glenrothes - 21 Year Old - Old & Rare Edition

Glenrothes – 21 Year Old – Old & Rare Edition
Country: Scotland   Region: Speyside
Age: 21 Year Old   Strength: 56.10%
Summary: Douglas Laing & Co. proudly offer this fine example of the Distillers’ Art as a special selection from their oldest stocks of whisky. No water is added to reduce its strength, as the Angel’s share has already taken care of that. No caramel, colouring is added, so that you can see it’s pure and natural colour. They have chosen to bottle this malt without chill-filtration in the old fashioned and traditional style. By so doing, they leave in the entire Distillers’ preferred qualities apparent on the nose, palate and finish – self evident when you remove the cork. As you can see on the label, this is one bottle of a very restricted offering, which once consumed, cannot ever be repeated.
Nose: full of dark fruits and lively spices on the nose initially – it mellows as it warms to tobacco smells and a damp whisky warehouse character.
Palate: on the palate the sherry cask influences it early with more (now macerated) fruit – then sweet barley, more tobacco, vanilla and mocha flavours alternatively appear.
Finish: the finish is more vanill’d now plus late cough drop style warming (now menthol!) spices.

Old Pulteney - 1990 Vintage

Old Pulteney – 1990 Vintage
Country: Scotland   Region: Highlands
Age: 23 Year Old   Strength: 46%
Summary: Old Pulteney 1990 has been matured in hand selected American oak ex-Bourbon barrels and Spanish oak ex-Sherry butts.
The casks previously held heavily peated malt which gives this Vintage a slight smoky character.
Appearance: Polished amber.
Aroma: Subtle, warm wood smoke envelopes the sweetness of peardrops & crunchy green apples. Fragrant floral notes, fresh lemon zest & honey are followed by a spicy & fruity touch of ex-sherry casks.
Taste: Full bodied & rich. The initial sweet honey note is quickly followed by a wave of thick peat smoke, joined a moment later by a spicy vanilla, toffee & rum smoked raisins.
OLD PULTENEY DISTILLERY
Founded in 1826 by James Henderson at the height of Wicks celebrated herring boom, the Pulteney Distillery is one of the most northerly on the British mainland.
At a time when road links to the town were yet to be established, the distillery was dependent on the sea for its supply of barley and for the shipping out of its malt whisky. Wick became known for the barrels of silver (herring) and gold (whisky) which left the port in vast numbers.
The distillery itself has an absorbing history, with its unique stills defying convention to this day. The wash still, in particular, is a source of fascination to visitors due to the absence of a swan neck. Legend has it that when the still was delivered it was too tall for the still house and the manager simply decided to cut the top off! The Old Pulteney bottle now incorporates a bulbous neck to reflect the shape of the stills.
Over time, the distillery has passed through the hands of various owners, and even closed during times of trouble for the industry in 1930. Luckily, the repeal of an often forgotten period of prohibition in 1947 saw the welcome resumption of whisky production, with the distillery changing ownership a number of times, before its purchase by Inver House Distillers in 1995. Throughout this history what has endured is the quality of the whisky. Traditional craftsmanship and the distillerys windswept location continue to contribute to the award-winning whisky that is Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Whisky Sampling: The Aberlour Tweet Tastings!

December 4, 2013 by Gary Leave a Comment

The five Aberlour malts!

The five Aberlour malts!

The Aberlour Tweet Tasting has been and is now, sadly, gone!

It took place on the evening of December 2nd (although some people were sampling in the middle of the afternoon because of the time-zones!)

The malts sampled were:-

  • Aberlour 12 Year Old Double Cask Matured
  • Aberlour 16 Year Old Double Cask Matured
  • Aberlour A’bunadh Batch 45
  • Aberlour 18 Year Old
  • Aberlour 12 Year Old Non Chill Filtered

If you want to catch up on what all the tasters had to say (and there was quite a few of them!) you can view the tweets by searching for the hash tag #AberlourTT on Twitter.

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!

Tasting Notes – Aberlour 12 Year Old Double Cask Matured (40%)

The 12 year-old expression takes Aberlour’s raw spirit and deftly softens it through double cask maturation.

Traditional oak and seasoned Sherry butts are both used and the mellowed spirits are combined to deliver a subtly balanced flavour.

Nose: Sweet, citrus, hint of apple. Aromas of banoffee pie!

Palate: Luscious raisins mixed with spice. Light feel on the palate. Chocolatey and not too much sherry.

Finish: Nice long spice finish with a bit of sweetness! Quite a fiery finish at the very end.

Overall: Some debate was given over to the fact that this was a 40% bottling as opposed to the previous 43%. But my opinion was it mattered little, it was still a nice dram and the 3% was not missed!

Tasting Notes – Aberlour 16 Year Old Double Cask Matured (43%)

The 16 year Aberlour in a combination of first fill oak Bourbon casks and the finest Sherry butts.

Nose: Raisins with a well tempered spiciness.

Palate: Light on the palate with sweet Xmas raisins – Yum! Chocolate cream.

Finish: A lot less spice on the 16YO finish which surprises me after the 12YO. Tobacco taste at the end.

Overall: A great, well balanced malt. Perfect for those who prefer less spiciness.

Tasting Notes – Aberlour A’bunadh Batch 45 (60.2%)

Carefully made by hand, Aberlour A’bunadh is a unique cask strength whisky which has achieved cult status among whisky connoisseurs.

A’bunadh means ‘the original’ in Gaelic and is made in homage to Aberlour’s founder, James Fleming, using only traditional methods without chill filtration or other modern processes.

Nose: Lovely sherry aromas mixed with rum and orange – almost like Cointreau! And a hefty alcohol hit!

Palate: Sweet, thick on the palate, rich Xmas cake!

Finish: Fantastic spice but not too over the top. Short tannin finish with exploding spiciness!

Overall: The 60% alcohol is remarkably un-bruising! An amazing malt!

Tasting Notes – Aberlour 18 Year Old (43%)

Matured in the highest quality casks, where it develops deep Bourbon and Oloroso Sherry flavours, this is the richest and most indulgent Aberlour expression.

Nose: Wood notes, rich toffee.

Palate: Light fruits and sweet – not as rich as A’bunadh.

Finish: Very short finish with muted spice.

Overall: Attractive sherried flavour throughout, very smooth!

Tasting Notes – Aberlour 12 Year Old Non Chill Filtered (48%)

A bit of a mystery malt here!

Apparently the Aberlour 12 Year Old Non Chill Filtered has gone down a storm in the States when it was sampled there a few weeks ago.

Some of the tweeters thought that we should be able to stand a bit of cloudiness in our malts now (because of the abscence of chill filtering) and we should embark on an education program to convince the buying public!

Nose: Vanilla, slight caramel, bit of chocolate in there.

Palate: Tasty sherry n’ spice, hints of wood and rich fruits and pepper!

Finish: Smooth, short finish, pleasantly spicy aftertaste.

Overall: I think this would make a very popular addition to the Aberlour range. Very morish!

My Favourite On The Night

Out of the 5, I think it’s got to be the Aberlour A’bunadh.

An absolute powerhouse of a malt that provides a complete taste sensation while being a gentle giant (belying the whopping 60.2% that it delivers.)

And to top it all, it comes in at a fantastic price!

Many thanks to The Whisky Wire (@TheWhiskyWire) for a great dram evening and the team at Richmond Towers (@DrinksPRAgency) for sending the samples!

Aberlour – Quality Under The Lens!

Aberlour A'bunadh - Shot by Ted Dwane

Aberlour A’bunadh – Shot by Ted Dwane

Aberlour, the award-winning single malt whisky, has brought its artisanship and craft to life by linking up with up-and-coming photographer and bassist for the world-famous band, Mumford & Sons, Ted Dwane, as the exclusive partner for his inaugural solo photography exhibition, ‘A Show of Faces’, that featured in Shoreditch, London earlier this month.

Dwane, who already has a keen interest in single malt, takes a unique and intricately crafted approach to photography using hand-developed single edition prints that provide layers of contrast, and remain the unique and only result of the photo.

This approach strongly mirrors Aberlour’s reputation for crafting a malt of superlative quality and careful curation of ex-sherry casks to provide the rich and intense sherry-cask influence to its range of single malts.
