Port Charlotte 10 – The Whisky Exchange’s annual Whisky of the Year 2021!

Port Charlotte 10 has triumphed in The Whisky Exchange’s annual tasting, taking the top spot in the only official blind whisky judging undertaken by members of the public.

Islay distillery Bruichladdich won the tightly fought battle in the annual Whisky of the Year blind tasting by specialist spirits retailer The Whisky Exchange. Their 10-year-old expression – a heavily-peated, rich and spicy whisky lives and breathes the distillery’s ethos that Islay whisky should express the aspects of the island’s character, from rich smoke to bracing sea breeze.

Six whiskies went head to head after they were nominated by global customers of The Whisky Exchange, with more than 2000 putting forward their favourites. The blind judging of the most popular was opened up to the world via the Whisky of the Year Perfect Measure Judging Set and online voting on 22 September. The sets were very popular with customers, selling out online in less than three weeks and resulting in more than 500 votes cast!

Starting with a blind tasting led by Dawn Davies MW at Virtual Whisky Show in October and continuing in the weeks after, whisky-loving consumers were encouraged to critique each whisky for nose, palate and finish, and select a first and second choice via the online voting form.

All whiskies in the tasting were under £65 retail price, and all ongoing, commercially available releases.
In addition to the winner Port Charlotte 10, the shortlist included:

This year, the company wanted to recognise other drinks categories and has introduced Rum and Gin Of The Year alongside the Champagne of the Year – the fourth year it has been awarded. Each category has been nominated by industry experts and staff at The Whisky Exchange based on their quality and value for money.

Whisky-loving consumers were encouraged to critique each whisky for nose, palate and finish, and select a first and second choice via the online voting form

The Whisky Exchange kindly sent me the six samples to try (Thanks @WhiskyExchange!) so I got a chance to sample them and make my own voting choice.

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – A (45%)

Nose: Cane sweetness, toffee apples but this dram is slow to give up it’s flavours. After a time they fill the glass nicely – especially creamy toffee!

Palate: Smooth and sweet toffee, fruity, slightly tropical.

Finish: Tasty spice which is not too powerful. There’s a little grapefruit at the end.

Overall: Good abv and very easy to drink!!

Tasting Notes – B (43%)

Nose: Apples, tropical fruits, slightly cakey, toffee, slightly peaty as well with some furniture polish. Gives of itself quickly!

Palate: Shades of peaty smoke and tropical fruits.

Finish: Chilli spice, fruit, more apple with a short finish.

Overall: The smoke was a surprise – dunno why!

Tasting Notes – C (46%)

Nose: Smoke n’ peat, not too heavy – very nice! Sweet wood and quite coastal.

Palate: Cane sweetness, smoke, peat, slightly antispetic – gorgeous!

Finish: very smooth with just a smidgeon of pepper at the very end – which is long.

Overall: Fireside sipper when the winds howling outside – so that no-one can hear you pouring another dram!

Tasting Notes – D (46%)

Nose: Dark rich chocolate, molasses, sherry and toffee.

Palate: Rich toffee and vanilla. Sherried fruits, chocolate with hints of orange.

Finish: Breathtaking spice and richly fruited.

Overall: Slow to develop but certainly worth the wait!

Tasting Notes – E (50%)

Nose: Smokey with treacley peat, salty and coastal.

Palate: Sherbet sweetness, smoke, charred wood and peat.

Finish: Intense spice but still very sweet – quite unusual! Long finish.

Overall: A tasty dram that is the sum of two very different halves – but better for it!

Tasting Notes – F (43%)

Nose: Tropical fruits, furniture polish, plasticine, leather. Smoke gradually grows at the back.

Palate: Tropical sweetness paired with smokey fireside flavours!

Finish: Peaty with sweetness added.

Overall: A classy dram that doesn’t dissapoint.

There’s sweet, roasty malt with a heathery dryness. The sherry notes keep back some of the usual Talisker pepperiness. In its place is luscious, slightly oily sweetness – with ripe, juicy fruit and vanilla” Donald John McEwen Process Operator The Distillers Edition is unique: after its usual aging process in American oak casks, the whisky undergoes a second maturation in casks previously holding sherry. The result is older, sweeter and richer than the regular bottlings. Appearance: Chestnut brown. Nose: Sharp and well focussed; no lingering, rambling smoke here. A sultana sweetness. Edencroft	Compass Box – The General Country: Scotland Region: Blended Age: Strength: 53.4% Summary: It’s been a good year for sourcing ridiculously rare parcels of extraordinary whisky. Two different companies approached us this year with similar stories: they each had several casks of Blended Scotch that had been blended at quite young ages, then not required and put back into cask and left to age. One parcel was 33 years-old and the other 40 years-old. We know little of the component whiskies, only that, being Blended Scotch Whisky, they were blends of both single malt and single grain whiskies. We could tell by tasting that some were aged in former American whisky casks and some in sherry casks. But the provenance wasn’t really important, because each parcel had matured into something extraordinary in flavour, and to us, as blenders, they each represented distinct and complementary flavour profiles. And this is where things got interesting for us. While each parcel was compelling in its own right, we had the feeling that by combining them in the right proportions, we could make something even more interesting. So we experimented for many weeks, blending the two together at different proportions before landing on the recipe in this bottle. The result is a whisky with the “antique” character lovers of old whiskies seek out. John Glaser – Whiskymaker. Availability: Limited Release of 1,678 bottles. Flavour Descriptors: It has extraordinary depth, with aromas and flavours reminiscent of spices, dried fruits and old sherry wine character. The palate is very soft, a virtue of blending malt whisky with grain whisky, and the finish is very, very long. Strength: 57% Summary: Titanic amounts of peat but with a light, delicate complexity and a beguiling finesse. Young, yet eminently mature, it defies us. It remains an enigma. We embrace that. Here, we pay tribute to its pedigree, to the land from which it came and the raw materials that gave it life: Octomore Scottish Barley. We believe in challenging convention. Character: Magnificently muscular. These casks tannins have added new layers of rich complexity to our own elegant, floral Bruichladdich whisky. This is a spirit to give pause, to reflect on. A spirit as much for the mind as for the palate. Character: Curvaceous, buxom, captivating yet elegant with a silky texture that is divine. Colour: Mahogany/ bronze. Nose: The opening notes are of marinated pears, apricot, mango, spicy apple; then drifts of dark chocolate orange and espresso coffee can be detected together with vanilla-rich toffee. The seductive notes of old style malt whisky rise serenely; warm, reassuring and deceptively potent. The aromatics flirt shamelessly with the senses and then you realise that this is no ordinary spirit – it’s just so wonderfully fragrant. Edencroft	Bruichladdich – Islay Barley 2006 Country: Scotland Region: Islay Age: Strength: 50% Summary: This is the second release in the Uber-Provenance Islay Barley Series – whisky that is very dear to our hearts. This spirit has been distilled from barley grown by our partner farmers (and good friends) here on Islay specifically for Bruichladdich – a link with the land and terroir of this great island that had been lost, broken for many years. Now once again the salt sea spray lashed fields of Islay are producing the raw material for our distinctive island single malt – this release made from barley grown on the eastern side of the island on jubilee field at the place known as the “headland of the gallows”, on Dunlossit farm. Character: The texture of the spirit is remarkably smooth for such a youngster. The mouth feel is quite irresistible; it’s fresh and zesty with the quality of the Islay-grown barley unrestrained by the presence of a long relationship with the oak. Now we can experience just how beautiful a spirit can be when distilled ultra-slowly by people who understand that their skills and patience are critical to the final outcome. This 10-year-old is now here to stay – the classic, elegance and finesse of Bruichladdich seamlessly married with the power and presence of heavy peat, left to mature slowly and un-hurried for 10 islay years. Edencroft	Ancnoc – 35 Year Old Single Malt Country: Scotland Region: Speyside Age: 35 Year Old Strength: 44.3% Summary: anCnoc single malt is refreshingly light and modern, even though its made using traditional methods. Their 12 and 16 Year Old bottlings have a clean, fresh character. However, this is the more mature 35 Years Old, their oldest offering yet. As youd expect, it shows a richer, more complex personality. However the resemblance to the younger expressions is unmistakable. anCnoc 35 Years Old is bottled in its most natural state; cask strength, non-chill filtered and natural colour & is limited to only 1,495 bottles worldwide. Nose: Initial aromas of sweet wood, sticky toffee pudding and baked apples are followed quickly by ripe sultanas and honey. Fragrant orange oil and cinnamon gum come to the fore next with a hint of peppermint lingering in the background. A drop of water brings out honeysuckle, gooseberry and chocolate-covered papaya. Great complexity. Colour: A rich, inviting amber. Taste: It sure has some body to it! Spicy entry with cinnamon and white pepper.
