Founded in 1810 (according to a plaque onsite) and originally called Kilnflat, the distillery was officially established by William Paul in 1829. It was the first to have been designed by the great 19th century architect Charles Chree Doig.
The distillery was closed in 1870 but re-opened in 1878 under Charles Kay. It was at this time the name was changed from Kilnflat to Glenburgie-Glenlivet.
