James Sutherland (a local landowner and the town Mayor) founded Glen Albyn in Inverness in 1846 on the site of a ruined brewery and malt kiln. After being awarded a license in 1847 the distillery had its share of trouble (including a fire in 1849) and fell silent in 1855.
Unfortunately no buyer could be found and it was eventually converted into a flour mill in 1866. A new Glen Albyn was built in 1883-84 by Gregory & Co., but there is doubt if this was on the same site as the original distillery.
The new distillery was on the south bank of the canal and included its own railway line connected to the main Highland Railway. Considered to be advanced for the times it was equipped with all the latest technology, receiving enthusiastic praise from Alfred Barnard (the celebrated author of ‘The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom’) on his visit in 1885-86.
