Bladnoch distillery was built beside the river Bladnoch by Thomas Mc. Clelland in 1817 and rebuilt in 1871 by his grandson. It is Scotland’s most southerly working distillery. In 1911 it was sold to the Belfast based whisky merchant Dunville & Co., who were whisky makers themselves and purchased Bladnoch to cope with customer demand.
However Dunville’s costs spiraled and they were unable to offer houses to persuade workers to take a job at the isolated distillery. Consequently Bladnoch foundered and Dunville’s went into liquidation in 1937, having only distilled during one year (1930) since 1926.
