The Whisky Advent Calendar Tweet Tasting!

November 21, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Whisky Red Advent Calendar!

Christmas was certainly in the air (and in the nose!) for last Monday nights Tweet Tastings making us all realise that Chrimbo was only a roasted chestnut throw away!

We were treated to the delight of sampling five drams from Master of Malt’s Whisky Red Advent Calendar (£149.95). It was a great (and early) introduction to the festive season!

Master of Malt’s Advent Calendars are now as traditional as listening to Christmas classic Pop Songs or over-cooking the sprouts so it’s great to have a chance to try out some whiskies which hail from all over the globe – a Whisky Red World Advent Calendar in fact!

The drams sampled were:-

  • Starward New World Whisky
  • Brenne Cuvée Spéciale
  • Whisky Advent That-Boutique-Y-Whisky Irish Single Malt
  • Kavalan Single Malt
  • Glenfarclas 105

If you want to catch up on what all the tweet tasters had to say you can view the tweets by searching for the hash tag #WhiskyAdvent on Twitter.

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!

Tasting Notes – Starward New World Whisky (43%)

An Australian Malt Whisky Produced using 100% Australian malted barley and aged in Australian Apera (fortified wine) casks.

Nose: Apples, oranges and yummy caramel with a hint of rum soaked plump raisins. Add a little bit of woodiness and some nice creamy fudginess which comes thru after a while!

Palate: Rich christmas cake with alcohol infused fruits! Some apples, oranges & tropical fruit with a hefty bit of spice thrown in.

Finish: Quite a dry, spicy finish but fair-dinkum all the same.

Overall: A solid, tasty dram that I enjoyed very much and would love to re-visit!

Tasting Notes – Brenne Cuvée Spéciale (40%)

A French Single Malt Whisky Produced using malted barley grown in Cognac. Initially matured in Limousin oak casks before being finished in Cognac casks.

Nose: Amazing tropical fruits – reminds me of those tuiti-fruiti chewy sweets! Plus there’s apples and pears with sugary vanilla. The banofee pie is also strong in this one with a side-serving of Rum and raisin ice cream.

Palate: A watered down version of the nose – banana and strawberry milkshake with a little too much sugar.

Finish: Short finish with some pepper but the milkshake lingers …

Overall: Not really my style of dram but some of the tweeters loved it! So, as should be the case, each to their own …

Tasting Notes – That-Boutique-Y-Whisky Irish Single Malt (46.8%)

An Irish Single Malt Whiskey – Whiskey #1 – Aged 13 Years – Batch #3.

Nose: Restrained sherry with some crisp green apples, fruits, caramel coupled with some fresh new wood. There’s oat and cereal with a little meadow hay. Left in the glass, after a while, there’s sticky toffee!

Palate: Yo! That’s nice! Vanilla sweet and fruity with a smooth, punchy, peppery bite!

Finish: Tropical fruit coupled with a woody dryness and don’t forget that spice!

Overall: I’m not surprised I enjoyed this – another fine, well selected and tasty dram from the Boutiquey Whisky stable!

Tasting Notes – Kavalan Single Malt (40%)

Kavalan Single Malt is a Taiwanese non-age-stated Whisky. Matured in ex-bourbon barrels it is rumoured to be around 3-4 years old.

Nose: Crisp apples with some ripe tangerines and pineapple. Vanilla fudge and I keep getting whiffs of Cointreau! – there’s so much oranginess!

Palate: Syrupy tropical fruits with some caramel – lovely!

Finish: Honeyed layers of fruit with just a dash of spiceiness that make this a very nice dram indeed!

Overall: First time sampling the Kavalan brand and I wasn’t dissapointed – amazing flavours and balance for such a young whisky.

Tasting Notes – Glenfarclas 105 (60%)

A Single Malt Scotch Whisky. The Glenfarclas 105 bottling was the first time a distillery had released a barrel proof single malt whisky. The brand was eventually re-named to 105, referring to its alcohol content in British Proof, which equates now to 60% ABV.

Nose: Creamy sherry with just a hint of port. Chocolate with stewed fruits.

Palate: Rich christmas cake with luscious chocolate! Thick, creamy fudge with fruit! Adding a few drops of water releases a lot more caramel and chocolate and sets the taste buds tingling! Heady stuff though at an un-diluted 60%!

Finish: Basically the same as the initial palate. This dram just keeps on giving!

Overall: It’s 60% but it’s VERY smooth! I’m Mr. “No Water” usually but this dram certainly shows more of it’s facets with some H2O and I recommend adding some. (Never thought I’d hear myself say that!)

My Favourite On The Night

Out of the 5, I think it’s got to be the Glenfarclas 105, closely followed by That-Boutique-Y-Whisky. The Glenfarclas 105 is what Christmas is all about – but liquified!

There’s still time to grab an Advent Calendar and they cover a variety of whiskies and other spirits including Gin, Tequila and Rum. Why not celebrate the run up to Santa’s upcoming visit with something tasty and different each day? But keep them away from those Elves!

Many thanks to Steve at The Whisky Wire (@TheWhiskyWire) for a great dram evening and the team at Drinks By The Dram (@DrinksByTheDram) for sending the samples and without whom!

Tasting The Half-Century Blend – a lesson in smoothness from start to finish!

December 12, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

    Joy in a glass!

My Tasting Notes – The Blended Whisky Company The Half-Century Blend (45.5%)

As promised – here are my tasting notes for this amazing blended whisky.

Nose: Very powerful sugar-laden fruity aromas. Green, waxy, apples. Thick, sticky, caramel fudge.

Palate: Sweet, syrupy with vanilla and caramel. Stewed apple and some lovely, dry oak undertones.

Finish: Smooth, so smooth! Slight spicinesss in a long, sweet caramelly finish.

Overall: A dram in a league of it’s own! Not a trace of harshness, no rough edges, a lesson in smoothness from start to finish. Gorgeously sweet with a nice healthy fruitiness to balance. The world is a better place for this kind of dram!

    Background

The Blended Whisky Company has revealed their newest limited edition release, The Half-Century Blend, honouring the era before the ‘whisky-boom’ and the quest for increased yields at all costs.

Just 768 bottles of The Half-Century Blend were produced

Just 768 bottles of The Half-Century Blend were produced

Following on from their two multi-award-winning whiskies, The Lost Distilleries Blend (World’s Best Blended Whisky – World Whiskies Awards 2014) and The Golden Age Blend (Best Scotch Blend – World Whiskies Awards 2016), The Blended Whisky Company has unveiled their latest limited edition release – The Half-Century Blend.

Only whiskies aged for over 50 years were used to create this astonishing blend, standing testament to the extraordinary complexity of these whiskies – distilled over half a century ago. The ‘whisky-boom’ of the late 1960s to the 1980s saw the beginning of an inexorable march towards modernisation, and the quest for increased yields at all costs.

Before this shift, distilleries were home to less efficient barley-strains, sprawling on-site floor maltings, inefficient brewer’s yeast, lengthy fermentation times, mucky direct-fired stills, bulky and inefficient worm-tub condensers and less active refill casks. The result of all this inefficiency, waste and lost commercial-opportunity? Flavour, subtlety, poise, an incredible depth of fruit-character and a beguiling, ethereal quality sadly missing from many of today’s whiskies.

Proving that patience has its rewards, the slow-maturing whiskies contained in The Half-Century Blend were produced in an era where flavour – not forecasts – ruled the roost.

Just 768 bottles of The Half-Century Blend (RRP £599.95) were produced in this first batch, with an ABV of 45.5%.

Many thanks to The Blended Whisky Company (@BlendedWhiskyCo) for sending the samples!

The Blended Whisky Company range is available from fine retailers including Amathus, Amazon, Harvey Nichols, Hedonism, Master of Malt and Ocado.

For the fifth year running, the range of Drinks by the Dram Advent Calendars has returned. The selection once again features classics like Whisky, Ginvent and Rum, while exciting new additions include calendars dedicated to Scotch, American, Irish and Japanese whiskies along with calendars full of Glenfarclas Single Malt, independent whisky bottlings from That Boutique-y Whisky Company and Origin Single Estate Gins made with juniper sourced from specific regions all around the world.

The Whisky Advent Calendar was launched in 2012, and has since become a tradition among whisky enthusiasts, letting them count down to Christmas and explore the world’s best whiskies. Each handmade, wax-sealed dram allows whisky fans to sample a new expression, tasting everything from single grain and bourbon to rare Scotch worth up to £600 a bottle.

2016 marks the debut of the Drinks by the Dram Very Old & Rare Whisky Advent Calendar (RRP £9,999.95), developing on the concept introduced by the Old & Rare Advent Calendar launched in 2015. Each calendar is a bespoke wooden box built by hand by cabinet-maker Simon Jewell Designs in Kent, and is available in a walnut or macassar ebony finish. Within every calendar sit 24 individually numbered 30ml drams of some of the world’s most sought-after whiskies, including expressions from long-closed distilleries, a 60 year old single malt and a whisky worth up to £19,000 a bottle.

Drinks by the Dram’s 2016 Advent Calendar range also includes calendars filled with single cask whiskies, mezcal, gin and more. The full range of calendars (listed below) will be available later this month.

Drinks By The Dram Has Sent Me Crackers!

December 10, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

    Paper Hats for Cuddly Teddies!

    Paper Hats for Cuddly Teddies!

    It’s Christmas – Go Crackers!

Following the success of their popular spirit-filled Christmas Crackers, Drinks by the Dram has introduced whisky and gin crackers for Christmas 2015.

'Lewis' The Bear modelling the fine paper hat - the joke has been hidden to protect the innocent!

‘Lewis’ The Bear modelling the fine paper hat – the joke has been hidden to protect the innocent!

Launched in 2014, Drinks by the Dram’s Christmas Crackers swap out the usual prizes of keyrings, whistles and tiny playing cards for a selection of delicious spirits and liqueurs, presented in 3cl wax-sealed ‘drams’. The set features 6 Christmas Crackers, each containing a different dram along with the traditional paper crown. Oh … and crap joke!

For Christmas 2015 they have extended the range of Christmas Crackers to include two sets focussed exclusively on whisky and a set focussed entirely on gin, alongside their classic set filled with an array of top quality spirits and liqueurs.

Luckily for me, I got sent some Drinks by the Dram Whisky Crackers – that’s generously bonkers of them!

    The Whisky Crackers Contents are:-

    – Glenfarclas 25 Year Old

    – Kilchoman Machir Bay

    – The Lost Distilleries Blend

    – Dalmore 15 Year Old

    – Deanston – Batch 2 (That Boutique-y Whisky Company)

    – The Macallan Amber – 1824 Series

“Not bad!”, I hear you cry – well you didn’t and I wouldn’t have heard you anyway but you get the point. Anyway, in the spirit of spiritous research I decided to pull a couple myself and sample the liquid goodies (I couldn’t resist trying the hat on as well.)

I was on my own so it wasn’t as much fun so I had to make-do by tying one end to a door handle and cracking my crackers that way. Well. One must do what one must (I heard that said somewhere.)

Tasting Notes – Glenfarclas 25 Year Old (43%)

A premier bottling from a Premier brand – enough said.

Nose: Powerful sherry, fruit, vanilla and creamy sweetness.

Palate: Smooth and creamy sherry with a tangy zest. Sweet, fruity, spicy cake mixture.

Finish: Long finish with some nice spice.

Overall: A gorgeous dram this – make sure you win the pulling the cracker bit and claim this one for yourself. After all, who the hell said ‘Christmas is for sharing’? They obviously didn’t have a 3cl. sample of this bad boy!

Tasting Notes – Dalmore 15 Year Old (40%)

Launched in 2007 and matured in matusalem, apostoles and amoroso sherry casks.

Nose: Amazing colour to this dram, rich and golden. The nose has orange, sherry and sweet fruitcake.

Palate: Thick and luscious on the palate. Orange and chocolate battle it out with some tasty sherry.

Finish: Velvety finish with a great balance of syrupy sweetness and spicy pepper.

Overall: A fine dram from a trusted brand. Let this one go to someone else but only as long as they promise to do ALL the washing up!

Just to summarise, the full range of crackers are:-

Drinks by the Dram Whisky Crackers
    RRP £64.95

Drinks by the Dram Gin Crackers
    RRP £47.95

Drinks by the Dram Spirits & Liqueurs Crackers
    RRP £37.95

Drinks by the Dram Premium Whisky Crackers
    RRP £109.95

    The Completely Crackers Range

    The Completely Crackers Range

The Premium Whisky Christmas Crackers (RRP £109.95), feature altogether more exclusive drams like a 23 year old Bowmore, a 21 year old Balvenie and even a 50 year old single grain whisky.

Gin enthusiasts can also crack open some fantastic tipples with the Gin Christmas Crackers (RRP £47.95), containing drams of spectacular juniper-based-libations like award-winning Professor Cornelius Ampleforth Bathtub Gin, St. George Terroir and 1897 Quinine Gin.

And of course, there will be new jokes this year (but don’t expect them to be any better than last year’s jokes).

I’m NOT going to share the jokes with you, I’ll spare you that and let you discover them yourself – and then inflict them on your family and friends!
