Sampling The Whisky Exchange’s Exclusive Foursquare Hereditas Rum – I’m Now A Rum Fan!

June 5, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

Foursquare Hereditas

Foursquare Hereditas Rum – bottled exclusively for The Whisky Exchange!

The Whisky Exchange has introduced its first exclusive rum since unveiling a new classification system for the spirit earlier this month.

Foursquare Hereditas is bottled exclusively for
The Whisky Exchange!

Renowned Barbados distillery Foursquare has created Hereditas – a Single Traditional Blended Rum in the new classification – exclusively for the retailer.

Matured in Barbados for 14 years in a mixture of bourbon and sherry casks, it is rich and heavily-sherried – a style of spirit more often found in the whisky world.

It’s a release certain to excite rum and whisky drinkers alike!

The new classification system aims to give consumers and the trade a more informed understanding of the rum category based on flavour profiles and production methods, instead of the colour of the spirit.

The Whisky Exchange’s head buyer Dawn Davies has created the classification after extensive research and discussion with suppliers and producers.

They have taken inspiration from the classification system created by Luca Gargano of rum importer Velier and Richard Seale of Foursquare.

Davies has primarily focused on production method to create a technical classification and also devised a series of ‘flavour camps’ to give indication of how a rum will taste.

This gives rum drinkers more information to help them select their next purchase.

Foursquare Hereditas

Distilled at Foursquare Distillery in Barbados
A blend of pot- and column-distilled rum
Aged exclusively at origin for 14 years

70cl / 56%
£79.95

The Whisky Exchange has kindly sent me a sample to try (Thanks Whisky Exchange!).

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Nose: A fine looking rum that coats the glass. On the nose there’s Plump raisins, tropical fruits which then opens up to bananas. There’s tasty vanilla aromas mixed with rich sherry flavours.

Palate: Luscious mouthfeel revealing plump fruit cake with dashes of vanilla and sherry.

Finish: Some serious spice – but not too peppery – coupled with rich dark chocolate. A little bit of dryness at the finish finishes off this lovely taste bud experience!

Overall: I’m not very experienced with Rum but from sampling this one I can see why rum is increasing in popularity. If you like sherried malt whiskies then you’ll love this.
The flavours are awesome with plenty of depth and character – I’m now a Rum Fan!

Ableforth’s Brings The Tubbery To London Cocktail Week!

September 28, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

Ableforth’s will be THE place to head during London Cocktail Week!

The Ableforth’s Tubbery – a brand new concept from Ableforth’s will be THE place to head during London Cocktail Week for Taste Workshops, cocktails, skittles tournaments and all kinds of Tub-based merrymaking.

From Wednesday October 3rd to Saturday October 6th, join Ableforth’s at 133-135 Bethnal Green Road for four evenings of fun and games.

“.. a place where discerning drinkers come together to discover deliciousness in all its forms.”

But, what is a Tubbery?

Well, it’s a fun and flavoursome space inspired by Ableforth’s finest tubs – the Bathtub and the Grog Tub, and a place where discerning drinkers come together to discover deliciousness in all its forms.

After the brilliant time had by all at last year’s Ableforth’s Underground, they’ll once again be popping up – but this time they’re making it an evening “do”, with the Tubbery opening its doors from 5pm to 2am.

Four evenings of fun and games!

Those who want to learn more about gin compounding or rum spicing can take part in a taste workshop and there’ll be Ableforth’s cocktails and all manner of games to be played. Plus, you’ll be bowled over (sorry!) by the Ableforth’s Skittle Alley.

For those who want to be in the know, on Wednesday October 3rd there’ll be a live Twitter feed as the World’s 50 Best Bars are announced, and throughout the week there’ll be competitions too, so keep an eye on the Ableforth’s social media channels for more Tubbery treats.

Discover taste, challenge your friends and celebrate the best of London Cocktail Week with Ableforth’s at The Tubbery – entry is free so head down and join in the festivities!

Ableforth’s Wins Two Top Titles From The World Drinks Awards 2018!

May 2, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

Ableforths World Drinks Awards 2018 – Rumbullion XO & Bathtub Sloe

Ableforth’s spirit range continues to claim impressive accolades with two more top titles from the World Drinks Awards 2018 given to a pair of Ableforth’s expressions. Rumbullion! XO 15 Years Old has been named World’s Best Spiced Rum, while Bathtub Gin – Sloe Gin has been named World’s Best Gin Liqueur.

An extension of the popular Rumbullion! range introduced in 2014, Rumbullion! XO 15 Years Old is based around a 15 year old Caribbean rum, complemented by Madagascan vanilla, orange, cassia, clove and cardamom.

The World Drinks Awards judges deemed it “Very well balanced”, and highlighted the “…Oak and cloves on the palate with caramel and fruit notes.”

This is the third time that the expression has been named World’s Best Spiced Rum at the World Drinks Awards – previously claiming the title in 2015 and 2017.

Ableforth’s is a multi-award-winning range of craft spirits and liqueurs created without compromise from the very finest ingredients

The whole range had a fantastic showing at the World Drinks Awards 2018, with Rumbullion! Navy-Strength and Rumbullion! Being awarded Gold and Silver medals respectively.

Bathtub Gin – Sloe Gin was introduced to the Bathtub Gin range in 2012, and is made with almost half a pound of sloes per bottle. The World Drinks Awards judges praised the expression, commenting: “Complex start with spice notes on the nose. Bright, powerful and wonderful take on sloe gin. Gentle middle with soft, short finish. Very tasty.”

Prior to winning the World’s Best Gin Liqueur title at the World Drinks Awards 2018, this expression also took home the Liqueur Trophy at the International Spirits Challenge 2015.

For a global brand like Ableforth’s, being recognised as best in class in global competition is incredibly rewarding. Our continued success with these wins is a testament to the brand’s uncompromising dedication to excellence across the entire brand team and throughout our business.

– Adam Wyartt: Ableforth’s global brand manager

The latest wins follow the news that Ableforth’s Bathtub Gin – Old Tom was named World Best Compound Gin at the World Gin Awards 2018 in February this year.
