Jura Whisky Christmas!

November 25, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

The limited edition gift tins are available priced from £35.

The limited edition gift tins are available priced from £35.

Premium Jura gift tins: a festive collectible for whisky lovers this Christmas

Jura Whisky captures the spirit of its unique island home in a range of collectable, festive gift tins, perfect for whisky lovers and set to be at the top of Christmas lists this winter.

Handcrafted like Jura’s tall stills, the intricate designs reflect the different sides of the island, from the calm, palm tree-lined bays of the East, to the wild, rugged shores of the West. Each tin features delicately embossed, flowing lines, mirroring both the iconic curved Jura bottle shape and the outline of the island itself.

Carefully sourced ingredients and a unique distillation process bring a full range of flavours to each of the expressions in the Jura collection, offering drinkers the opportunity to explore the diverse tastes and flavours of the island’s craft, community and coastlines:

· Jura Origin is aged in ex-Bourbon casks for 10 years, with notes of caramel, honey and soft liquorice. Origin was born during the rebirth of the distillery in 1963 and marks the start of Jura’s long line of hand-crafted whiskies. With a light, delicate and warming honey finish, it is the perfect ingredient for hot toddies on a cold winter’s night.

· Diurachs’ Own – this rich, full-bodied 16 year old whisky pays tribute to the Diurachs – the Gaelic name for the community of Jura. Aged in American white oak and sherry casks, Diurachs’ Own captures the indulgent side of Christmas, with notes of dark chocolate, orange and honey.

· Superstition is lightly peated and matured in ex-Bourbon casks, resulting in a different flavour to explore in each drop. With hints of smoke, honey and pine, Superstition is the dram to warm up with after a cold winter’s walk.

· Prophecy is heavily peated, with fresh cinnamon and sea spray, evoking flavours from Jura’s stormy Atlantic coastline. Matured without chill filtration for a huge, peaty punch, Prophecy is the ideal companion to an evening spent in front of a roaring fire.

The limited edition gift tins are available to purchase now from independent stores and multiple retailers priced from £35.

Glen Scotia / Double Cask
Glen Scotia / Double Cask

£33.50
Country: Scotland
Region: Campbeltown
Age:
Strength: 46.%
70cl

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Campletown.
Unit: 70cl
ABV: 46%
The Double Cask is matured in their finest oak barrels then finished in a combination of first fill bourbon barrels followed by time in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks to produce this outstanding malt whisky that provides the perfect balance of rich spicy fruits, overlaid with the characteristic sea spray and vanilla oak finish for which the house of Glen Scotia is famous.
NOSE: Amber. Very sweet. Initially it is all creme caramel, caramelised fruit sugars, wood sugar, toffee and fudge before some apple and peach come through. In time a charred note of bourbon with a pleasing dusty dryness. Has some power.
PALATE: Sweet start and quite fat and though the alcohol gives a little tongue-tingling buzz the result is a good mid-palate weight. The dry distillery character is there still, but there is now depth to counter. Water slightly dismantles the different elements, but adds some dried mint.
FINISH: Deep and dark.
AWARDS: Gold Medal / 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and Gold Award from the 2016 World Whiskies Awards.

Kilkerran / 12 Year Old Single Malt

£49.50

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Campletown.
Distillery: Glengyle.
Unit: 70cl.
ABV: 46%
Age: 12 Year Old.
The Kilkerran Work in Progress Series was completed with the release of WIP 7 sherry and WIP 7 bourbon in 2015. The current Kilkerran bottling is a 12 year old Kilkerran Single Malt. This is the first core release for Glengyle distillery since it re-opened in 2004 and is available now. It’s been a long wait, 12 years but worth it.
Nose: oak notes are dominant, followed by toasted marshmallows and dried fruit pudding, as well as cherries, marzipan and a hint of peat.
Palate: initially fruity with citrus notes and orange peel, after this: vanilla, butterscotch, honeycomb and digestive biscuits can all be tasted and enjoyed.
Finish: velvet and smooth with lemon meringue, to conclude, there’s an oiliness and a saltiness that you’d expect from a Campbeltown dram.

Age:
Strength: 45.%
70cl

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Speyside.
Distillery: Benromach.
ABV: 45%
Unit: 70cl
Distilled/Bottled: 2007/2016
Age: 9 Year Old.
Cask Type: Ex Hermitage.
Pour yourself a dram… as the whisky slips into your glass, observe its rich ruby red colour imparted by oak casks that once nurtured wine from the Hermitage Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée, in the northern Rhône region of France, famed for the Syrah grape.
Lift your glass and take in the AROMA WITHOUT WATER. Swirl your dram around and enjoy those scents of summer… sweet summer fruits, refreshing red apples, and zesty lemon and lime. A touch of vanilla emerges and cinnamon notes develop, underlined by a touch of peat smoke and a peppermint edge.
Now take a sip. The TASTE WITHOUT WATER is sweet and bursting with intense fruit… succulent dark cherry and orange, sharper kiwi and gooseberry… and these combine wonderfully with creamy milk chocolate and a gentle smoky edge.
Now enjoy the AROMA WITH WATER… nose your dram and you may detect lime and grapefruit at first, with hints of delicious toasted malt and sweet vanilla with eucalyptus notes in the background.
Take a sip and savour the TASTE WITH WATER… at first it’s gently spicy, quickly followed by sweet raspberry and tangerine flavours, and hints of almonds complementing the underlying peat smoke edge. The finish is gloriously long and fruity with a hint of smoke.

Pikesville Straight Rye Whiskey refuses to be forgotten. First produced in Maryland in the 1890s, the brand, along with the rest of the once-booming Maryland Rye industry, was shuttered by prohibition. The brand reemerged after prohibition and became the last standing Maryland Rye, as the rest of the industry's production had ceased. Now produced in Kentucky from extra-aged barrels stored in prime warehouse locations, Heaven Hill keeps this historic Maryland mark alive with this award-winning six year old, 110 proof offering.

Wemyss Malts Tweet Tasting – A Batch Strength Celebration!

November 10, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

Batch Strength? Oh Yes!

Batch Strength? Oh Yes!

Wednesday night was Batch Strength Tweet Tasting night, courtesy of Wemyss Malts and Steve from The Whisky Wire.

We had the opportunity to sample three of a new range of Non-chill filtered, No Age Statement blends with a fiesty alcohol strength of between 54.5% – 57%.

The Blended Whiskies sampled were:-

  • Wemyss Malts The Hive
  • Wemyss Malts Spice King
  • Wemyss Malts Peat Chimney

If you want to catch up on what all the tasters had to say you can view the tweets by searching for the hash tag #WemyssMalts on Twitter.

The Range

The Range!

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!

Tasting Notes – Wemyss Malts The Hive (54.5%)

Launched last month these limited edition (6000 bottles each) Batch Strength bottlings are the latest offerings from the multi-award winning Edinburgh based boutique spirits company. Each one uses signature malts to define their flavour and aroma as their names suggests.

Wemyss Malts have tailored the blend recipe for The Hive Batch Strength, to increase the deepness of the sweetness.

Nose: Quite subtle honey for me. Green apples, caramel and salt. There’s lemon, orange and cereal notes and I Love the luscious way it coats the glass!

Palate: Smooth, sweet with a satisfying mouthfeel. Honeyed, sweet and biscuity – pretty punchy though!

Finish: Quite dry finish, with caramel to accompany it – very little spice.

Tasting Notes – Wemyss Malts Spice King (56.0%)

Spice King Batch Strength has been made using a different assortment of West Coast signature malts providing an increased salinity & pepperiness which when blended with the peated malts provides a salt caramel like flavour.

Each of the new Batch Strength bottlings have been produced using a selection of single malts, sourced from over 10 Scotch whisky distilleries.

Nose: Smokey peat on this one for sure. Waxy, salty, tobacco and ever so slightly honey.

Palate: Smooth, thick mouthfeel, waxy with a fruity sweetness. Spicy kick coming through.

Finish: Syrupy, honey finish married with lovely intense spiced, salty flavours!

Tasting Notes – Wemyss Malts Peat Chimney (57.0%)

Peat Chimney Batch Strength is made with roughly the same recipe as the Non Chill filtered 46% core variant taking advantage of a heavily peated, late-cut distilled Islay whisky as its signature malt.

Nose: More peat, less smoke on this one. A Less oily dram – citrus & more rich, dark peat. There’s a little popcorn but mostly it’s gently smoking peat (with a rich frutiness)!

Palate: Smooth, oily thick, sweet and nicely peaty – does exactly what it says etc…

Finish: Peppery sweetened spice to finish and that ever present peat.

Overall: A Fruity and smokey fireplace burming peat – what a delight!

Tasting Notes – Wemyss Malts Rob Roy Cocktail

The famous Cocktail using Peat Chimney Batch Strength as its base. Originally created in 1894 by a bartender at the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan.

It was named in honour of the premiere of Rob Roy, an operetta by composer Reginald De Koven & lyricist Harry B. Smith. The operetta was loosely based upon Scottish folk hero Rob Roy MacGregor.

The recipe is:-

  • 50ml Peat Chimney Batch Strength
  • 30ml Sweet Vermouth
  • 10ml PX Sherry
  • 10ml demerara syrup
  • Dash of cherry bitters
  • Garnish with cherries and orange

All three of the new Batch Strength bottlings can be used with this and other cocktails including The Old Fashioned.

Palate: Mmm … that’s nice – smokey vermouth and Sweet n’ sour cherry sherry! A tasty cherriness coupled with the sherry and I love the way the cherry also battles it out with the peatiness!

Overall: Morish, powerful and tasty – enough said!

My Favourite On The Night

The Peat Chimney – The peat, you just gotta luv Peat!

Many thanks to Steve at The Whisky Wire (@TheWhiskyWire) for a great dram evening and of course, Wemyss Malts (@WemyssMalts), for sending the samples and without whom!

TV’s unique distillery map to be auctioned for charity!

November 8, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

Scotch! The Story of Whisky aired on three consecutive Tuesday evenings in October on BBC 2 Scotland

Scotch! The Story of Whisky aired on three consecutive Tuesday evenings in October on BBC 2 Scotland

The giant, illuminated distillery map featured in hit BBC TV documentary Scotch! The Story of Whisky is being auctioned for charity by series producer Move On Up Productions.

The map, which is made from corrugated iron and whisky barrel staves, marks every operational distillery in Scotland with a bright, shining light. Created especially for the popular BBC documentary, it is truly one of a kind.

It was used during the series by presenter and whisky-loving Scottish actor David Hayman to highlight the vast spread of Scotland’s whisky distilling industry.

Cromarty-based Move on Up Productions has now partnered with online magazine Scotchwhisky.com to auction the map to raise funds for Spirit Aid, the humanitarian relief organisation founded in 2001 by series presenter David Hayman.

Based in Glasgow, Spirit Aid is dedicated to assisting young people and children whose lives have been affected by war, poverty, lack of opportunity or humanitarian crisis, and is currently running programmes in Palestine, Afghanistan, Malawi and Scotland.

Measuring 2.4m x 1.8m, the map would be perfect for a whisky bar, distillery visitor centre, whisky event or any premises with a mission to inform and educate people about Scotch whisky.

A geeky guy we know believes that it is possible to wire it up to a till, so if a whisky from a specific distillery was being bought, the appropriate light would be illuminated.

– Don Coutts: producer of Scotch! The Story of Whisky

A full technical spec can be provided for interested bidders.

The silent auction is being operated by Scotchwhisky.com, which is inviting sealed bids starting at £150 to be emailed to whiskymap@scotchwhisky.com.

The auction will close at midnight GMT on Sunday 20 November. Delivery is free within the UK but a successful overseas bidder will have to pay for transportation.

Scotch! The Story of Whisky aired on three consecutive Tuesday evenings in October on BBC 2 Scotland, and was watched across the UK on BBC iPlayer.

Presented by David Hayman, the documentary charted the rise of Scotch whisky, including the global popularity of blends to today’s world of investing and collecting.

I went on a pilgrimage to find out why such a simple drink has come to mean so much. From the makers to the marketeers and the chemists to the cocktail-makers, and from the Highlands to Hobart in Tasmania, I found that Scotch is Scotland’s gift to the world.

– David Hayman: Presenter

This distinctive distillery map was a central feature of Scotch! The Story of Whisky, and instantly recognisable to the many viewers across the UK who tuned in to discover more about the world’s favourite whisky.

We’re proud to be working with Move On Up Productions in auctioning the map in support of Spirit Aid. No doubt it will be a welcome addition to an existing whisky business or bar seeking to further enhance its educational offer for visitors.

Rebel Yell Tweet Tasting – Something To Shout About!

November 8, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

Yelling since 1849!

Yelling since 1849!

On the Eve of the US Election I virtually attended a very appropriate Monday nights Tweet Tasting. The politics were left to others and instead we sampled some of the Rebel Yell Bourbon range.

Way more fun and everyone was a winner!

Hosted by Steve from The Whisky Wire, the whiskeys sampled were:-

  • Rebel Yell Kentucky Straight Bourbon
  • Rebel Yell Small Batch Reserve
  • Rebel Yell Small Batch Rye

If you want to catch up on what all the tasters had to say you can view the tweets by searching for the hash tag #RebelYellBourbon on Twitter.

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!

Tasting Notes – Rebel Yell Kentucky Straight Bourbon (40%)

Rebel Yell takes its name from the Confederate war cry, used during the American Civil War. The original Rebel Yell recipe was invented in 1849, at the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Kentucky. Aged for at least four years, Rebel Yell Kentucky Straight Bourbon, is made using a mash bill of wheat, corn and malted barley.

Nose: Lot’s of green apples and caramel, honey and pear and spearmint. Little bit of oakyness but mainly very fresh and sweet!

Palate: Rich vanilla and caramel, sherbet sweet and green apples. A smattering of mintyness and there’s a dry woodiness as well.

Finish: Smooth finish with a little chilli spice.

Tasting Notes – Rebel Yell Small Batch Reserve (45.3%)

Rebel Yell has been favoured by the like of Keith Richards and Billy Idol. Rebel Yell Small Batch Reserve is made using a mash bill of wheat, corn & malted barley.

Nose: Quite subtle in comparison with the Straight Bourbon. Some heavy vanilla and fudge. A lot more wood with rich fruits.

Palate: Mmm .. rich fruit, vanilla, caramel and zingy mint! Smooth too! Buttery palate, hints of damp wood and apples.

Finish: Fiesty peppery spice at the finish. A warming rebellion on the throat to be sure!

Tasting Notes – Rebel Yell Small Batch Rye (45%)

Rebel Yell Small Batch Rye is made using a mash bill of rye, corn & malted barley. Rebel Yell’s parent company Luxco is currently building a new distillery on a 70-acre site in Nelson County, Kentucky. The new distillery will house all the company’s bourbon brands including Rebel Yell, when completed later next year.

Nose: Vanilla and strong coffee grounds. More caramel and mint with the wood and apples thrown in. A more refined aroma to be sure.

Palate: Ooh! A step up! Rich chocolate, caramel and green apples – superb! Bit of rich orange and mint coupled with sugared fruits. Would make a nice whiskey sour this one!

Finish: Smooth, sweet and spicy – NOT a rebel on the tongue for sure!

My Favourite On The Night

Without a doubt, I think it’s got to be the Rebel Yell Small Batch Rye – rich, satisfying and warming – certainly worth joining the Revolution for!

Many thanks to Steve at The Whisky Wire (@TheWhiskyWire) for a great dram evening and of course, Rebel Yell (@RebelYell_UK), for sending the samples and without whom!
