One of the new limited editions, this is the first time using this type of cask for Deanston whisky.  Limited to 5604 bottles, this 17 year old single malt is light and crisp with a delicious malty creaminess.

ABOUT 2002 PINOT NOIR CASK: Given that Pinot Noir grapes are good enough to make Champagne, that most regal of sparkling wines, we hoped Pinot Noir casks might be worthy of creating a finish for our soft and honeyed malt. And you know what? They most definitely are. Notes of vanilla, citrus and sweet white wine are delivered with a zing so zesty, you can practically hear them.

NOSE: Light and crisp, orchard fruits followed by creamy vanilla and oak, giving way to a subtle hint of green grape.

PALATE: Dry, acidic, slight maltiness with a rich hit of tannin.

FINISH: Long acidity, giving way to a milk malty creaminess.

NOSE: crystal clarity to the sharp, ultra fresh barley. Clean, uncluttered by excessive oak, the apparent lightness is deceptive; the intensity of the malt carries its own impressive weight and the citrus note compliments rather than thins. Enticing;

TASTE: immediately zingy and eye-watering salivating with a fabulous layering of sweet barley. Equally delicate oak chimes in to ensure a lightly spiced balance and a degree of attitude;

FINISH: longer than the early barley freshness would have you expecting, with soft oils ensuring an extended, tapering, malty edge to the gentle, clean oak;

BALANCE: sophisticated, sensual with character and about as puckering elegant as single malt gets…and even thirst-quenching. My God: the guy who put this one together must be a genius, or something

Tullamore D.E.W. / Irish Whiskey .
Tullamore D.E.W. / Irish Whiskey .

£23.50
Country: Irish
Region: Irish
Age:
Strength: 40%.

Summary:

COUNTRY/REGION: Ireland.

CATEGORY: Blend.

DISTILLERY: Tullamore Dew.

BOTTLER: Distillery Bottling.

ABV: 40% Vol.

Tullamore D.E.W. Original is a triple distilled, triple blend of all three types of Irish whiskey: single malt, grain and pot still. The sweet softness of grain whiskey, soft spice from the pot still and fruitiness of the single malt create a uniqueness of flavour that marks out Tullamore D.E.W. from all other Irish whiskeys. Tullamore D.E.W. Original is triple cask matured in three distinct cask types – traditional refill, ex-bourbon and ex-sherry – to create unrivalled depth and balance of flavour.

The early floral yet biscuit flavour reflects the grain whiskey, while the soft spicy notes can be attributed to the pot still whiskey in the blend. The citrus flavour is complemented by the single malt. The nutty, or even marzipan note, combined with distinctive vanilla in the finish, is imparted by the sherry and bourbon casks used in maturation.

John Quinn, Global Brand Ambassador for Tullamore D.E.W., said: “Tullamore D.E.W. is the only whiskey to insist on the ‘Power of Three’ at the three key stages of whiskey making. It’s a triple distilled, triple blend of all three types of whiskey, matured in three types of cask. It’s the blend of all three types of triple distilled whiskey, and, in particular, the inclusion of single malt, that gives Tullamore D.E.W. more complexity and a unique smoothness, setting it apart from all others as an Irish whiskey of true character.”

NOSE: Light, sweet citrus and green apple combined with vanilla undertones.

TASTE: Early fresh fruit leads to a definite light spike followed by some toasted wood which evolves into a delicious vanilla sweetness.

FINISH: Put the glass down as you sense the almost buttery mellowness.

BOTTLING SERIE: Moment range.

BOTTLED: 2020

CASK TYPE: .

NUMBER OF BOTTLES: 1500

ABV: 43% Vol.

The Moment Edition Story: Down in Bodås mine, thousands of casks are stored which are periodically quality tested by Mackmyra's Master Blender, Angela D'Orazio. During her trips to the mine, she sometimes encounters some casks that stand out from the rest, and these casks deserve to be bottled as they are or in an edition with an extra clear vision. Due to this reason Mackmyra created the exclusive series called Moment.

Moment Körsbärsrök (Cherry Smoke) is a smoky whisky with a peaty spiciness and sweet notes of cherry. The recipe of the whisky is created from a combination of Mackmyra's smoky and unsmoked new make, both distilled at our original Mackmyra Bruk distillery in 2010. The smoky new make was aged in ex-Bourbon casks in the sizes 100 to 200 litres. The complementary unsmoked spirit was aged in ex-Bourbon and American oak casks seasoned with German cherry wine.

The medium-sweet cherry wine is perfect for cask seasoning and gives the whisky fruity, intense notes of cherry.

Here, Mackmyra's most special casks and recipes come into their own. Each edition has a very limited amount bottles that are released and you can expect at least one new Moment edition per year.

NOSE: Fruity with notes of peat, tar and spicy juniper-smoke. Round notes of toasted oak, vanilla, anise, and fruity cherry followed by citrus and pear fudge.

TASTE: Fruity and smoky with a well-balanced spiciness. Fine smoky notes with peat, oil and juniper. Fruity cherries and round notes of oak and vanilla.

AFTERTASTE: Fruity, smoky and spicy with pleasant notes of tar, peat, juniper, vanilla and fruity cherries.

Compass Box Releases Magic Cask!

December 21, 2020 by Gary Leave a Comment

A Limited Edition Inspired by A Single Extraordinary Sherry-Seasoned Cask!

A Limited Edition Inspired by A Single Extraordinary Sherry-Seasoned Cask

Compass Box has launched their latest Limited Edition Magic Cask Blended Malt Scotch Whisky. Made from a blend of Speyside malt whiskies, Magic Cask takes its defining character from the inclusion of whisky from one Sherry-seasoned cask. On the palate, Magic Cask reveals ripe golden dessert apples with an oaky richness, while flavours of toffee and cocoa powder are also conjured up.

The Compass Box whiskymakers recommend pouring the whisky after dinner and savouring its medley of autumn fruits and dark chocolate.

Compass Box Magic Cask

In 2016, Compass Box re-racked one-year-old malt spirit of robust character into first fill Oloroso-seasoned butts. By 2019, one particular cask – #2 – proved so compelling that they began to experiment.

Sometimes just one cask in a blend of many can provide the touch of magic that allows the whole arrangement to sing. We first took advantage of this phenomenon in 2006 when an experimental whisky, finished in an ex-Madeira barrique, led to the Limited Edition bottling we called Magic Cask.

We’re delighted to be able to share with you again the magical influence of one exceptional cask – a Sherry-seasoned cask in this case – can have on a recipe.
– John Glaser: Compass Box Founder and Whiskymaker

We have had samples of whisky from the lost Imperial Distillery in our Blending Room for some time. Aged in first fill Bourbon barrels, the spirit is brimming with fruit and vanilla notes and exhibits a lovely tongue-clinging texture. However, finding the right project and accompaniments to this parcel of single malt proved a challenge.

Then, last year, we discovered cask #2 amongst samples drawn from our 2016 Sherry cask maturation experiment. Full to the brim with cherry fruit and cedar spice character, it was a remarkably precocious whisky. When combined with the parcel from the lost distillery, it created an exceptionally rich and layered blended malt Scotch whisky.

ABOUT COMPASS BOX

We are Scotch whiskymakers. This word ‘whiskymaker’ is our word – it does not appear in a dictionary. And for 20 years we have been relentlessly focused on reinventing Scotch whisky, with every new blend designed to help make the world of whisky a more interesting place. Of course, we have not done it on our own. We have collaborated with some of the world’s most visionary bartenders and designers to really push the boundaries of what is possible. We have won more awards for innovation than any other producer in Scotland because we are always experimenting. Always looking for sparks of creativity that will deliver something totally compelling, yet completely surprising. Whiskies that just must be experienced. This vision motivates us as whiskymakers. Our blends are consistently rated equal to or better than the great single malts of Scotland by the most respected voices in the industry. Six-time Whisky Magazine Innovator of the Year. 2020 Whisky Magazine Hall of Fame Inductee, John Glaser, Founder of Compass Box.

JOHN GLASER, WHISKYMAKER

American ex-pat John Glaser is the founder and head whiskymaker of Compass Box, the boutique Scotch whisky blending house widely recognised in the industry for their innovative approach to the creation and enjoyment of whisky. John began his career on a path to become a winemaker, before re-routing himself through the corporate world and ending up as a Marketing Director for Johnnie Walker in London. With a desire to do things differently, John started Compass Box from the kitchen of his west London home in 2000 in order to bring the joys of Scotch whisky to more people. From the beginning, his vision has been to create one of Scotland’s finest and most compelling whisky companies, re-imagining the standards for quality and style in the industry. In 2020, John was inducted into the Whisky Magazine’s Hall of Fame. Two decades later, Compass Box now has two blending rooms in London, a team of 20 working internationally and stocks of maturing whiskies in Scotland. In 2020, Compass Box celebrates its 20th anniversary. With a forward-looking approach and unrelenting focus on creativity and integrity, John and his team continue to take forward his mission to make the world of Scotch whisky a more interesting place.

FarmStock Rye Crop No. 002 is the second blend of their limited edition annual FarmStock estate release. It is the latest of their products showing farm-based innovation and the next step in achieving WhistlePig FarmStock’s 100% Triple Terroir™ vision – whiskey distilled from their grain, proofed with their water and aged in their custom Vermont White Oak.

The FarmStock Rye Crop 002 blend was crowdsourced from bartenders, influencers, and consumers from around the United States. The final blend is composed of 32% 2-year aged Triple Terroir™ whiskey made entirely from Rye, water and wood from the WhistlePig farm (up from 20% 1 year Triple Terroir™ Whiskey in Rye Crop no. 001), 45% 6-year aged whiskey from MPGI in Indiana and 23% 10-year aged whiskey from Alberta Distillers in Canada. Rye Crop 002 marries the untamed contours and boldness of WhistlePig’s young estate whiskey with the richness and complexity of aged ryes.

NOSE: Orange zest, white chocolate, vanilla bean and fresh pear combine with a gentle Rye spice.

PALATE: Delicate fruitiness gives way to a full-bodied burst of spice, rounded by notes of allspice and cinnamon and balanced with a pleasant dryness.

Single Barrel, Bottled at Proof, Powerfully Complex, Distinctly Unique From Anything they've done Before. Stupendous.

On the rare occasion that Dave Pickerell’s five promises are realized, they release a whiskey that epitomizes WhistlePig’s odyssey to unlock the potential of Rye Whiskey.

The Boss Hog Edition åÂ… is the first American Whiskey finished using Japanese Umeshu, the result of a true collaboration between WhistlePig and Kitaya brewery on Japan’s Kyushu island.

This well aged Straight Rye Whiskey was created using koji fermentation. Each bottle is adorned with The Samurai Scientist – Jōkichi Takamine – who pioneered koji fermentation in the American whisky industry over a century ago.

Each bottle barrel is bottled at strength, between 120 – 122 proof.

NOSE: Intensely aromatic, with cinnamon, maple, and toasted marshmallow that develops with time in the glass.

PALATE: Tobacco, ginger, baking spices, and savory umami creating a remarkably rich, nuanced and elegant profile lending to soft, sweet notes that further color the mosaic of flavor.

FINISH: Incredibly long, with oak spice, char, and just a touch of smoke lingers as the finish fades.
