Atom Brands Triumphs At The International Spirits Challenge 2018!

July 23, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

Atom Brands takes home three trophies and four golds in the International Spirits Challenge

Atom Brands has been awarded a series of fantastic accolades in The International Spirits Challenge 2018 — one of the most respected and influential spirits competitions in the world.

Their portfolio of brands, including Origin, That Boutique-y Whisky Company, The Blended Whisky Company and The Handmade Cocktail Company picked up a series of medals and trophies, with The Handmade Cocktail Company also being recognised as Pre-Mixed Producer of the Year.

Now in its 23rd year, The International Spirits Challenge receives more than 1,500 entries from nearly 70 countries worldwide, and each product is blind tasted and awarded a score for its aroma, appearance, taste and finish.

In the gin category, where over 2,000 samples were tasted, Origin’s Arezzo gin was awarded a gold medal, and in the Whisky category both That Boutique-y Whisky Company’s Blended Whisky #3 23 Year Old and The Blended Whisky Company’s Half-Century Blend – Batch 2 received accolades, with the latter being awarded a trophy – the highest honour available.

“There is no more rigorous test of a liquid’s quality than blind panel tasting, and we’re absolutely delighted to have triumphed in these most prestigious of awards.”

This was the first year for the Pre-Mixed drinks category, which saw Atom Brands’ The Handmade Cocktail Company not only scoop two trophies and two gold medals, but also be named as Pre-Mixed Producer of the Year.

The ISC are firmly in the top tier of awards bodies, and the fact that we’ve scooped three trophies and a category-level award stands testament to the ‘quality first’ approach we take with all our liquids.

There is no more rigorous test of a liquid’s quality than blind panel tasting, and we’re absolutely delighted to have triumphed in these most prestigious of awards.

New York Bourbon Widow Jane Appoints Maverick Drinks As UK Distributor!

July 23, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

“It’s a fantastic product that we know bourbon enthusiasts will love.”

Multi-award-winning UK craft spirits distributor Maverick Drinks is welcoming Widow Jane, the urban bourbon brand with an Empire State of Mind, to its dynamic drinks portfolio.

With a distillery in Red Hook, Brooklyn, Widow Jane releases and produces award-winning bourbons and whiskeys using a proprietary heirloom corn varietal and unique water from the Widow Jane mine in Rosendale, upstate New York.

Now available through Maverick Drinks is Widow Jane 10 Year Old Straight Bourbon Whiskey, distilled in Kentucky and perfected in New York, proofed with Widow Jane’s very own water.

The resulting well-rounded bourbon offers a rye spice to complement the corn, alongside buttery toffee aromas, and notes of cherry wood, olive oil and burnt orange on the palate.

Widow Jane 10 Year Old is released as a single-barrel product, so while core flavours are consistent, there are always tangent notes that make each barrel unique.

We’re proud to finally start growing Widow Jane in the UK and letting people in on what we’re doing in Brooklyn,

We can’t wait to continue to express our intense profile and our commitment to awesome whiskey.
– Vince Oleson: Widow Jane distiller

The team at Widow Jane have managed to source a steady supply of outstanding aged bourbon from Kentucky, which they’ve put their own touch on with the addition of water from the Widow Jane Mine.

It’s a fantastic product that we know bourbon enthusiasts will love.
– Michael Vachon: Head of Brand Development at Maverick Drinks

Widow Jane joins the growing ranks of award-winning brands represented by Maverick Drinks, including the Kyrö Distillery Company, Balcones, Brenne, Bluecoat Gin, FEW Spirits, Filliers, the New York Distilling Company, Smooth Ambler, St George Spirits, Wolfburn, Ableforth’s, That Boutique-y Gin Company and That Boutique-y Whisky Company.

As part of its #ForwardDrinking campaign, Maverick Drinks continues to challenge how brands work with bars up and down the country. The distributor has engaged bar communities throughout the UK with the first in a series of seminars, The Relationships Between Brands and Bars is Broken, to stir up conversation and drive meaningful change.

This philosophy, coupled with the strength of the Maverick Drinks portfolio, played a substantial part in Maverick Drinks being named Spirits Distributor of the Year for the third time in four years at the 2017 International Wine & Spirit Competition.

Congratulations To Alan Winchester – ISC 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner!

July 16, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

Alan Winchester

The Glenlivet is celebrating a true industry icon as it raises a dram to its very own Master Distiller, Alan Winchester, who has been awarded one of the most prestigious industry accolades, the International Spirits Challenge (ISC) 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award.

Starting out as a distillery tour guide before becoming the ultimate guarantor of THE definitive Speyside malt, The Glenlivet, Alan has experienced a number of significant achievements in his 40 years in the industry. He was the man behind The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve, the number one Single Malt innovation globally in the past five years (IWSR, 2016), and more recently crafted The Glenlivet Captain’s Reserve, a new Single Malt whisky selectively finished in high-quality cognac casks.

His other significant accomplishments include:
Releasing The Glenlivet’s first series of 50 Year Old whiskies, which was named in his honour (The Winchester Collection)
Creating The Glenlivet Smugglers Trails in 2007 in conjunction with the Crown Estate
Becoming a Master of the Quaich in 1997 and acting as President of the Malt Distillers Association in 2008 for three years
Serving as Chairman of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling in Scotland, and subsequently receiving his Fellowship

Alan does not leave his passion for his job at work. During his travels, he enjoys visiting wineries and distilleries to continue to learn more about distillation and fermentation techniques. In addition, every year at the annual Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival, Alan can be found leading walks along the highland trails, sharing his personal insight and historical perspective to the many eager walkers and whisky lovers visiting Scotland.

Now in its 23rd year, the ISC is one of the most authoritative, respected and influential spirits competitions in the world. Founded on a rigorous and independent judging process, the Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates the work and commitment of an individual who has made a significant impact on the drinks industry during their career.

Alan has been nominated, judged, by his peers. It is an enormous compliment to Mr Winchester for services rendered to the Scotch whisky industry down the years. He is not only a consummate professional, but a highly approachable, likeable guy who is able to convey the mysteries and complexities of the creation of Scotch whisky, in remarkably easy to understand terms.

– Editor of Drinks International, and a judge for the ISC

It’s hard to find someone who brings quite as much enthusiasm and dedication to their job as Alan and we’re thrilled that his hard work has been recognised. The ISC is one of the most prestigious awards bodies in the industry, and the Lifetime Achievement Award in particular celebrates true excellence.

It’s an exciting time for Scotch and we are lucky to have Alan as The Master Distiller of The Glenlivet.
– Miriam Eceolaza: Global Brand Director at The Glenlivet

I am honoured and touched to have received this award. I started my career at The Glenlivet in 1979, and over those years have witnessed a fair few changes. But the one thing that has remained the same is the dedication to excellence and the commitment to maintaining the exceptional quality for which The Glenlivet has become known.

This passion and dedication is shared by the entire team at the distillery and I’d like to thank them for their support over the years. I couldn’t have done it without them.
– Alan Winchester: Master Distiller at The Glenlivet

PEATED TO A HEAVYWEIGHT 40PPM, PORT CHARLOTTE SCOTTISH BARLEY IS A MULTI-VINTAGE CUVEE CRAFTED FROM CASKS HAND-PICKED BY HEAD DISTILLER ADAM HANNETT. THIS REMARKABLE SINGLE MALT, ORIGINALLY CREATED BY THE LEGENDARY DISTILLER JIM MCEWAN, REPRESENTS A UNION BETWEEN THE CLASSIC FLORAL ELEGANCE OF BRUICHLADDICH AND HEAVY PEAT.

This whisky is testament to our belief that provenance matters. Trickle distilled from 100% Scottish Barley the spirit gently matures in our lochside warehouses before being bottled here at the distillery using Islay spring water.

CHARACTER: The texture is extraordinarily rich with a huge depth of character. The smouldering heat of peat fires pulls you into a whirlpool of islay flavours and aromas but with such finesse that you welcome the storm.

COLOUR: Gilded lily.

NOSE: Opening with assertive waves of peat smoke and Atlantic squall, the olfactory system is on high alert in anticipation of some major sensory excitement. A swell of aromatics flood the senses with notes of iodine, salty canvas, crushed sea shells, charred oak staves, black pepper, paprika and leather tobacco pouches. The second wave brings vanilla, figs and soft plump dates, marinated pear, freshly milled malt, dark sweet toffee and cracked walnuts. It’s smoky. It’s smouldering. It’s sensuous. Just close your eyes and inhale long and deep. This is aromatic awesomeness.

PALATE: Wow! Waves of the sweetest, smoothest, warmest smokiest spirit that you have ever experienced flood onto the palate like the atlantic surf on Saligo Bay. It is potent, focused and the flavours explode brilliantly onto the palate. Full of depth and complexity, the smokey sweetness of the barley contrasts beautifully with the marine freshness of the spirit and the richness of toffee and vanilla. The complexity is enhanced further with a citrus twist and then mellow oak tempers the fire. Once the taste buds adjust to what is happening, they rejoice in the company and pleasure of this young Celt.

FINISH: It’s long and heart-warming, arousing feelings of pride and passion. It brings courage and strength, honesty and faith to your very soul.

MOOD: It cries “freedom”. You are in a good place and you envy no man. You feel alive and ready for whatever lies ahead, knowing that the true spirit of Islay is with you.

NOSE: The smoke is calmed by the marine, ozone character, time has brought a balance, a harmony in the combination of oak, smoke and spirit. While the smoke is always discernible on the nose it is dry, earthy, peatash in its style and so allows the oak to come forward with waves of golden caramel, fudge, vanilla custard, hints of ginger, nutmeg and clove. There is citrus fruit, coaxed from the glass with a drop of water, gentle lemon meringue and clementine. breathe deeply and the floral aromas of wild thyme, heather and sea pink bring you to this Atlantic coast.

PALATE: On the palate there is a noticeable delicacy and softness in texture and style. Again, the balance of flavour is superb as the smoke wraps loosely around the sweetness drawn from deep within the oak. Coconut, vanilla custard, lemon honey combines with smoked oysters and sun baked salty sand.

FINISH: The finish is sublime, smoky sure, but also the soft sweetness of fudge and malted barley, orange, mango and banoffee pie hinting of the depth and quality of the oak. The many layers interchange on each sip. As the smoke comes and goes so too the notes of the spirit, ripe apple and apricot, beautifully intertwined with malt and oak sweetness and that typical Port Charlotte style dry smoke.

CHARACTER: Ageing for 10 years on the shores of Lochindaal has had a profound effect on this spirit. like sunshine on a winters day, this Port Charlotte 10 brings clarity and lightens the mood, welcoming and brightening the future.

WE’VE COME A LONG WAY SINCE RAYMOND STEWART FIRST PLANTED MALTING BARLEY FOR US IN 2004. AN EXTRAORDINARY 17 FARMERS HAVE NOW COMMITTED TO GROW EXCLUSIVELY FOR US ON ISLAY, WITH ONE THIRD OF OUR ANNUAL REQUIREMENTS NOW SOURCED HERE.

This Port Charlotte Islay Barley 2011 is the second heavily-peated release from our uber-provenance single malt series. Harvested in the summer of 2010, our barley was raised on three Islay farms, by Raymond Fletcher, Neil McLellan and Raymond Stewart. The resulting rich and aromatic whisky expertly balances the power of peat with the elegance and finesse of our trickle distilled spirit. It is the ultimate embodiment of our commitment to authenticity, transparency and traceability.

NOSE: A whirlwind of vibrant aromas burst from the glass, an earthy tarred peat smoke announces this is Port Charlotte. lemon, peach and green grapes come from the spirit. Vanilla pods, creamed coconut and chocolate speak of the American oak maturation. The combinations of aromas intertwine and jostle for attention. some time to open allows notes of lemon drizzle cake, white chocolate and peach yoghurt to rise wrapped in a velvet blanket of light smoke.

PALATE: Hints of salt reinforce the coastal feel. Dry smoke, salted caramel and apple sauce. Then lemon drops, boiled sweets and ground white pepper. The smoke is light on the palate, tar and charcoal rather than medicinal phenols. Towards the finish and the light gentle spirit has an edge of floral sea breeze, marine and refreshing. The sweetness of the oak and the barley are matched beautifully by the dry peat smoke. Islay grown, the barley seems more distinct and brings through the peach and apple typical of our spirit.

FINISH: Tar and brine, peat smoke and salt, coconut and tobacco. Close your eyes and the smoke takes you to an Islay beach with a driftwood bonfire.

CHARACTER: The sweet/smoke combination is the defining theme on the palate. A dram for summer nights. Driftwood bonfires, the sand between your toes and some good company.

For their third experiment, Malt Master Brian Kinsman travelled to Canada to meet a renowned winemaker in Niagara. There he learned how the grapes had to be picked by moonlight at -10ËšC to produce the intensely sweet Icewine.

Upon his return to the Glenfiddich Distillery Brian started experimenting with several French oak Icewine casks from the Canadian winery, filling them with different Glenfiddich aged malts for up to six months. Only the rarer whiskies, those aged for 21 years, could cope with the extra Icewine intensity.

The taste is a perfect combination of both pioneering liquids, the heightened candied sweets and oakiness of Glenfiddich are complemented by mouth-watering tropical fruit notes and a luscious sweetness from the unique Icewine cask finish.

The Hakushu Distillery was founded half a century after Yamazaki. Keizo Saji inherited his father’s vision in his quest for innovation and constructed this second Suntory distillery in 1973.

Built amidst the deepest forests of Mt. Kaikomagatake in the Japanese Southern Alps, the Hakushu Distillery is without question one of the highest distilleries in the world. The majestic forest that surrounds the Hakushu Distillery shelters an abundance of plant varieties reflecting the many expressions of Japanese nature.

The malt whiskies born here are simultaneously blessed with a very particular microclimate, verdant forests, and water offering a rare softness and purity, only made possible by filtration of rain and snow through thousand-year-old granite rocks.

FLAVOUR DESCRIPTORS: Sweet, delicate and very smooth on the palate, with flavours of vanilla-cream, cereals and a subtle apple like fruit character.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Ideal as an aperitif served in a white wine or similar glass with chilled water to taste. Try before a meal with shavings of Parmigiano Reggiano.

DISTILLERY SOURCING: Single malts from the towns of Alness and Longmorn, single grain whisky from Fife.

WOOD: 100% first-fill American oak ex-Bourbon.

THE SECRET IS IN THE OAK: The secret to making Asyla is the quality of the casks. We use only whiskies aged in first-fill American oak casks because these yield whiskies with more vanilla character, more richness and more sweetness than Refill casks. Asyla is made with 50% malt whisky. There are few blended Scotches that use as high a malt content as we do at Compass Box. The result is a carefully crafted, elegant blended Scotch whisky that makes the perfect aperitif.

THE SIGNATURE RANGE FROM COMPASS BOX: Asyla is part of the Signature Range from Compass Box. The five Scotch whiskies in this range cover the entire spectrum of Scotch whisky styles, from the delicate, sweet character of Asyla, to the subtle vanilla, clove and fruity characteristics of Oak Cross, the rich and spice notes of The Spice Tree, the peatysmoky character of The Peat Monster and the elegant flavours of vanilla cream, toffee and coconut in Hedonism. Each is made from the highest quality casks, to create more complexity. The whiskies are combined according to each recipe and returned to casks for marrying up to 24 months before bottling.

Steps like these enhance complexity, flavour integration and soft mouthfeel. Extra steps, but we think they’re worth it.

*Update (June 2018) from Compass Box:

We regret to inform you that when our current case inventories are gone, Asyla will be unavailable for the foreseeable future.

The demand for Asyla is such that we have run out of stock of the appropriate age range of the key single malts for this recipe. We have these single malts in our maturing stock, but they will not reach the appropriate maturity we need for the Asyla recipe for several more years.

We are searching the market in Scotland for appropriately mature stocks of these malts. If we find even a small parcel, we will consider making an Asyla limited edition. Long-term, we hope to bring back Asyla permanently when our current stocks come to maturity.

We will keep you posted. Thank you for your understanding.

Chivas XV 15 Year Old Blend Launched!

July 2, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

Chivas XV is a disruptive new addition to the Scotch category

Chivas is shaking up the Scotch whisky category with the launch of Chivas XV – a 15 year old blend that challenges conventions around how and when to enjoy Scotch whisky. Created to be enjoyed as part of a high-energy, celebratory moment, Chivas XV proves that a serious whisky doesn’t need a serious setting to be enjoyed.

Chivas XV will be on sale exclusively in Global Travel Retail

Continuing Chivas’ tradition for expert blending, Chivas XV is aged for a minimum of 15 years and selectively finished in Grande Champagne Cognac casks, bringing together two of the world’s most prestigious spirits to seamlessly blend tradition and innovation.

The use of Grande Champagne Cognac casks delivers a rich, refined and velvety interpretation of the traditional Chivas house style.

This combination provides the perfect taste profile for a wide range of contemporary serving styles, encouraging whisky fans to enjoy their favourite spirit in a whole new way – from Chivas XV shots to cocktails designed to emphasise the quality and rich flavour of the whisky during high-energy celebrations.

Chivas XV, named in a nod to both the age statement and the style of traditional Cognac classification, features a contemporary new look, while also sharing the same iconic bottle shape that helps to make Chivas whiskies so recognisable around the world.

Chivas XV is available in two formats to cater for different occasions: an eye-catching gold bottle stands out from the crowd during moments of celebration, while a clear bottle with a sophisticated gold outer carton makes the perfect celebratory purchase or gift.

We know that Scotch whisky fans love Chivas’ generous house style but are also looking to experiment with new tastes, and find new ways in which to enjoy their favourite spirit. Enter Chivas XV – the perfect expression for those who want to celebrate life with a truly luxurious and unique spirit that has been designed specifically with the energy of the consumption occasion in mind.

A disruptive move for the category, Chivas XV presents a more contemporary side to Scotch, and encourages whisky drinkers to create memorable experiences that live on long after the celebration.
– Richard Black: Global Marketing Director at Chivas Regal

Chivas XV will be on sale exclusively in Global Travel Retail from 1st July, 2018 at an RRP of $69 for 1L and rolled out globally from 1st October, 2018.
