Matured wholly in air-dried, hand-selected ex-bourbon casks, the 'unashamedly excellent' Old Pulteney 12-years-old is the definitive expression in the Old Pulteney family. Traditionally crafted using techniques that other distillers have long abandoned, this winner of numerous gold medals at the most prestigious international competitions is a high water-mark of quality spirits.

APPEARANCE: Deep amber, red golden (with a slight pink hue) sparkling with a copper glow.

AROMA: Medium to high intensity with a briny hint of sea air.

TASTE: Dry, medium bodied and smooth, redolent of honey and cream, faintly salty with a slight spicy note and a sweet long-lasting finish.

Country: Scotland
Region: Highlands
Age:
Strength: 46%.

Summary:

COUNTRY/REGION: Scotland / Highlands.

CATEGORY: Single Malt.

DISTILLERY: Old Pulteney.

BOTTLER: Distillery Bottling.

BOTTLED:

STATED AGE: 15 years old.

STRENGTH: 46% Vol.

Matured for 15 years, this is our most balanced and smooth single malt. Balancing two different sides of the flavour spectrum, this single malt marries these perfectly, whilst also reflecting our coastal home and its unwavering influence.

On one hand, this is an intense single malt, yet at the same time, it is truly balanced.

Spice and sweetness unite in this naturally rich amber whisky to celebrate rich flavours, yet lighter, more refreshing coastal notes show another side of this single malt.

APPEARANCE: Rich amber.

AROMA: Intense yet balanced. Bursting with rich dried fruit, ripe apples and citrus, with honey sweetness and a generous chord of creamy vanilla. Slightly chocolaty and floral in the background.

TASTE: Fragrant spices and Christmas cake, with layers of chocolate and a distinct dark toffee sweetness. There is a hint of salty sea air on the finish, a clear connection to the influence of the sea on this single malt.

Matured for 18 years, this is indulgent and spicy thanks to the casks selected for maturation.

Taking its character and colour entirely from the casks within which it has been nurtured, this is a deeply warming whisky. The indulgence extends through this single malt with chocolate and spice defining the character but allowing for the influence of more vibrant zesty flavours.

APPEARANCE: Deep amber.

AROMA: Intense and warming. Indulgent chocolate and creamy vanilla, with rich honey sweetness tempered by vibrant spices. A whisper of flowery fruitiness yields to crisp bursts of citrus and apple.

TASTE: Chocolaty indulgence layered with honeyed spices and Christmas cake. Floral notes lend a dash of finesse, while zesty hints of citrus and green apple enliven a lovely long finish.

A WRITTEN OR SPOKEN CONVERSATIONAL EXCHANGE BETWEEN TWO OR MORE PEOPLE, AND A LITERARY AND THEATRICAL FORM THAT DEPICTS SUCH AN EXCHANGE. AS A NARRATIVE, PHILOSOPHICAL OR DIDACTIC DEVICE, IT IS CHIEFLY ASSOCIATED IN THE WEST WITH THE SOCRATIC DIALOGUE, AS DEVELOPED BY PLATO – BUT ANTECEDENTS ARE ALSO FOUND IN OTHER TRADITIONS INCLUDING INDIAN LITERATURE. THE TERM DIALOGUE.

Octomore 09.1 questions the fundamentals of superior single malt Scotch. Confident in its five year age statement, the Head Distiller demonstrates how a focus on raw ingredients and considered distillation can definitively debunk the myth that older is better.

Distilled in 2012 from 100% Scottish barley, the 09.1 is matured full-term in top-tier ex-American whiskey casks. The vitality of the spirit offers an awakening for those bound by traditional indicators of quality, it is the bold embodiment of a living, breathing experiment.

Atom Brands Wins Big In The Whisky Masters!

August 17, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Irish Whiskey Masters saw a further three gold medals for Atom

A number of Atom Brands’ spirits have been awarded gold and master medals in the recent Whisky Masters awards series.

These wins are just the latest in a series of accolades for Atom Brands!

In total, 15 gold medals and four master medals were presented across the World Whisky Masters, the Irish Whiskey Masters and the Scotch Whisky Masters — all of which are judged by industry experts in a blind tasting.

That Boutique-y Whisky Company were the biggest champions from the Atom portfolio, with The Blended Whisky Company also receiving recognition.

In the World Whisky Masters, whiskies from outside Ireland, Scotland and the US competed, with Atom winning two coveted gold medals; one for That Boutique-y Whisky Company’s English Whisky Co. 8 Year Old in the Single Malt – Premium category, and the other for That Boutique-y Whisky Company’s Slyrs 3 Year Old, which won gold in the Single Malt – Super Premium group and was commended by judges for its “full mouthfeel”.

The Irish Whiskey Masters saw a further three gold medals for Atom, with awards going to That Boutique-y Whisky Company’s Irish Single Malt #2 12 Year Old, Irish Single Malt #1 13 Year Old and Single Malt Irish Whiskey 8 Year Old, which all won in the Single Malt – Premium category.

The Scotch Whisky Masters was where Atom collected the biggest number of accolades, picking up master medals for That Boutique-y Whisky Company’s Port Dundas 25 Year Old (Single Grain – Aged 19?-30 Years), Blended Malt #3 19 Year Old (Blended Malt – Aged 19?-30 Years), and Blended Whisky #1 50 Year Old — Batch 7 (Blended – Aged over 31 years).

The fourth master was awarded to The Blended Whisky Company’s The Lost Distilleries Blend — Batch 10 in the Blended – Ultra Premium category.

The Scotch Whisky haul was completed with a further 10 gold medals across multiple categories for That Boutique-y Whisky Company.

These wins are just the latest in a series of accolades for Atom Brands, having recently been awarded seven gold medals in the International Wine & Spirit Competition and triumphing at the Gin Masters.

A long time ago, John Glaser (whisky maker) and a friend journeyed through the South of Spain, stopping by every little village bar they could. In one place, an elderly man took it upon himself to teach them about the local Sherry wines. They captured John's imagination with their nutty, saline character and tremendous spectrum of style.

Years later, when John discovered Scotch whisky, he was reacquainted with Sherry through whiskies aged in former Sherry casks, which are known for the rich, deep flavours they provide. He'd been drawn to this style of whisky ever since.

Inspired by an eponymously named bespoke whisky he had recently created for a bar in New York City called The Spaniard, he decided to explore this style further to create a malt whisky blend with its core whiskies aged in Spanish Sherry and Spanish red wine casks.

TASTING NOTES: Full, soft and sumptuous on the palate with flavours of citrus peel and pears poached in red wine and spices. The finish is long, with hints of rich vanilla panna cotta, ripe berries and cherries.

In this, the first release, 48% of the whiskies have been aged in ex-Sherry casks.

Once again, they combine the rich, bold spiciness of malt whisky aged in heavy-toasted French oak barrels with the evocative smoke of heavypeated Islay malt whisky. The components are from a range of ages that provides depth and complexity.

The combination yields a flavour profile like no other in Scotch whisky: big, bold, hauntingly smoky, but with an alluring ethereal sweetness that calls you back to the glass.

In this 2018 edition, they have reintroduced a subtle Sherry cask influence that adds an additional layer of complexity and richness. This is a touch Compass Box have used for Flaming Heart only once before, in the 2012 edition. While they nuance each edition of Flaming Heart, the signature style always remains the same.

TASTING NOTES: A medium smoky-peaty base is enriched by a sweet maltiness and notes of baking spices and dried fruit. Full on the palate and very long.

To create The Balvenie PortWood 21 year old single malt whisky, a marriage of rare Balvenie is transferred to port casks, or pipes, which have held fine port wines.

Here it is sampled regularly by The Balvenie Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE to ensure that just the right amount of character is imparted by the port casks, enhancing and developing the single malt whilst preserving its original characteristics.

Considered by many to be David’s finest creation, this whisky is one of his proudest achievements and has won an array of highly coveted industry awards since its release in 1996.

NOSE: I could nose this charmer all night long and into the early hours…there is fruity dexerity to this upon which I could lecture for hours on end. We are talking the thinest silvers here; kiwi fruit, psysallis, Chinese pear…exotic yet fresh and rich. The malt has a gristy quality emboldened by the lightest and most demur golden syrup…;

TASTE: You really couldn't ask for a better delivery; so gentle as the malt lands like snowflakes, so complex as the spices meet the fuller red liquorice and crystallised ginger notes…;

FINISH: A little bitterness creeps in, but the extension to the delivery fades as unhurried as a Scottish Highland summer sunset…;

BALANCE: Have to admit: will be drinking a mouthful of this before bed tonight. This is the perfect Speyside experience!

Seven Gold Medals Awarded To Atom Brands In The International Wine & Spirit Competition!

August 15, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

The International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) is one of the most prestigious and rigorous blind tasting competitions in the world

Recognising and rewarding the very best in the wine and spirits industry, the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) is one of the most prestigious and rigorous blind tasting competitions in the world, and this year Atom Brands is celebrating after winning seven gold medals.

The impressive haul includes a Gold Outstanding medal for That Boutique-y Whisky Company’s Islay #2 25 Year Old, which excelled in the Scotch – Islay – Single Malt – 18-25YO – 43-45%+ category.

Judges commented on its “good level of peat on the nose, which rises from the glass like a delicate peat fire fueling a steam ship”.

Two other expressions from That Boutique-y Whisky Company’s range also won gold medals, with the Caledonian 33 Year Old receiving an award in the Whisky – Scotch – Single Grain – 22-33 YO – Cask Strength (50-52%+) category and the Blended Malt #1 23 Year Old claiming a gold medal in the Whisky – Scotch – Blended Malt – 12-23 YO group.

A number of other spirits across Atom Brands’ extensive portfolio were also awarded gold medals, including The Handmade Cocktail Company’s Old Fashioned in the Cocktails – Whisky Base category, which judges called “a simply wonderful example”.

Three Darkness! whiskies also received gold medals

Three Darkness! whiskies also received gold medals; the Bladnoch 27 YO Pedro Ximénez Cask Finish (Whisky – Scotch – Single Malt – Lowland – 27 YO – Cask Finish & Cask Strength 56%+), the Tobermory 22 YO Moscatel Cask Finish (Whisky – Scotch – Island – Single Malt – 12 – 22 YO – Cask Finish) and the Blended Malt 20 YO Moscatel Cask Finish (Whisky – Scotch – Blended Malt – 20 YO – Cask Finish).

These impressive accolades are just the latest in a series of wins for Atom Brands, including The Handmade Cocktail Company being named Pre-Mixed Producer of the Year in the International Spirits Challenge, and winning 12 medals in the Gin Masters for Ableforth’s and That Boutique-y Gin Company.

We’re absolutely delighted to have scooped a veritable armful of gold medals at this year’s IWSC awards.

The IWSC’s blind-tasting format combined with the exceptional quality of the judging panels provides us with hugely invaluable and objectively neutral feedback. The ‘quality-first’ approach we take when developing liquids and selecting casks has paid off once again, and we couldn’t be happier.

Tun is a rare interpretation of the marrying process and allows our most mature casks of various vintages to come together to create a unique expression of The Balvenie that is greater than the sum of its constituent parts.

The Woodsman – A Contemporary New Blended Scotch Whisky!

August 10, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

A contemporary new Blended Scotch Whisky – The Woodsman.

The Woodsman – a new contemporary Blended Scotch Whisky was released on 9th August. Perfect for up-tempo occasions, it’s an exciting new addition to Whyte & Mackay’s growing portfolio which promises to bring new younger drinkers into the Scotch category by giving traditional blend behaviours and flavours the chop.

The Woodsman has an ABV of 40% and is the perfect whisky for mixing

The Woodsman’s release is the latest in a long-list of exciting announcements from Whyte & Mackay, following a surge in investment to boost their commitment to innovation and an increase in global marketing expenditure across its portfolio.

Just last week the Glasgow based producer re-launched its Highland Single Malt Whisky, Fettercairn, with four new expressions, alongside a complete overhaul of their Jura Single Malt Brand and a full rebrand and re-launch for Tamnavulin Speyside Malt.

The Woodsman has woodcraft at its heart – from its maturation process to its premium packaging.

It’s matured using a mix of freshly-built oak casks from Ohio, which gives it a hint of vanilla and spice and ex-Bourbon barrels double-scorched in Scotland for an extra depth, adding more vanilla sweetness and a hint of woodsmoke.

This transatlantic partnership makes for an especially smooth whisky and gives The Woodsman a truly unique flavour profile for a blended scotch; crafted with younger brown spirits drinkers in mind.

The tree-inspired bottle with debossed and embossed detail captures the spirit of the great outdoors and gives The Woodsman a stylish look and exceptional back bar stand out, especially with younger consumers looking for something different.

The Woodsman has an ABV of 40% and is the perfect whisky for mixing – bold yet balanced, rather than with a subtly-nuanced or overly-complex taste. Recommended serves for the new whisky include a Maple Syrup Old Fashioned, a Woodsman & Ginger Beer, or simply mixing with cola.

Whyte & Mackay is a company on a mission. We are investing globally in our current portfolio and are committed to innovation, with several new product launches planned over the next 12 months.

The Woodsman is a real category disrupter and we’re thrilled to bring this exciting modern spirit to the market. Our research showed us there are younger consumers drinking across several categories but avoiding Scotch because they’re put off by traditional category cues. We recognised this as an opportunity to tap into the continued growth in brown spirits drinkers and bring to market a blended scotch with a unique flavour profile and a rich and innovative production story.

The Woodsman will add value to the category while standing out as a differentiated offering against mainstream promoted blends.
– Steven Pearson: Global Marketing Director at Whyte & Mackay

The brand officially launched at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe’s Underbelly, with the Woodsman Tipi – a fully stocked bar complete with deck chairs, chesterfield sofas and a crackling TV-campfire.

Nestled in the leafy George Square and open throughout August, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a sip of The Woodsman while taking in the electric atmosphere of the festival. Within one week of the bar opening, Whyte & Mackay secured 46 new stockists for The Woodsmen with many more due to come on board.

The Woodsman 70cl will be available in selected bars and retailers throughout the UK, with an RSP of £28. Additionally, it’s available on Amazon.co.uk. For more information visit: woodsmanwhisky.com.

Tasting Notes: The Woodsman – ABV: 40%

Appearance: Rich, warm, golden-brown
Aroma: Vanilla with a hint of woodsmoke
Taste: Rounded vanilla, hints of spice, and a subtle smoky sweetness
Aftertaste: Sweet and easy – no lingering smoke or whisky burn
