![]() Compass Box / Flaming Heart 2018 Edition. £120.00 Country: Scotland Region: Blended Age: Strength: 48.9%. Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Various. CATEGORY: Blended Malt. BOTTLER: Compass Box (CB). BOTTLED: 2018 NUMBER OF BOTTLES: STRENGTH: 48.9% Vol. This is the sixth edition of Flaming Heart, a whisky inspired by a rock song. Once again, they combine the rich, bold spiciness of malt whisky aged in heavy-toasted French oak barrels with the evocative smoke of heavypeated Islay malt whisky. The components are from a range of ages that provides depth and complexity. The combination yields a flavour profile like no other in Scotch whisky: big, bold, hauntingly smoky, but with an alluring ethereal sweetness that calls you back to the glass. In this 2018 edition, they have reintroduced a subtle Sherry cask influence that adds an additional layer of complexity and richness. This is a touch Compass Box have used for Flaming Heart only once before, in the 2012 edition. While they nuance each edition of Flaming Heart, the signature style always remains the same. TASTING NOTES: A medium smoky-peaty base is enriched by a sweet maltiness and notes of baking spices and dried fruit. Full on the palate and very long. ![]() Compass Box / Spice Tree. £45.00 Country: Scotland Region: Age: Strength: 46% Summary: Country/Region: Scotland. ABV: 46% A long time ago, Whiskymaker John Glaser created a rich, bold Scotch whisky called The Spice Tree. Unfortunately, due to its avant garde method of oak-aging, he was compelled by the powers that be to discontinue production. Undeterred, he worked with cooper friends in both France and Scotland to develop a new, hybrid oak cask that would allow Compass Box to achieve similar results, but in a way that would be acceptable to even the most conservative of observers. Et voila, THE SPICE TREE was resurrected – matured using a custom-made cask with French oak for the heads and American oak for the bodies. SPICE TREE is a rich, intense malt whisky redolent of baking spices and layered with toasty oak accents that complement the underlying distillery character. Flavour Descriptors: Big, sweet aromas of clove, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. The palate is full, round and sweet, with the spice and vanilla complementing the core distillery characters and leaving a long finish. Recommendations: Its rich, bold flavours make it most suitable for after-dinner sipping, as an accompaniment to certain cheeses, and ideal in cocktails. Distillery Sourcing: Made entirely of Highland single malt whiskies from the villages of Brora (fruitiness), Carron (meatiness) and Alness (perfume). Wood: Primary maturation: first-fill and refill American oak. Secondary maturation: custom barrels with heavily toasted new French oak heads sourced from 195 year old Vosges forests. Ratings: 95.5 Points / Jim Murray's 2017 Whisky Bible. |
