‘For centuries, Sicily’s Marsala wine has been renowned for its robustness and depth of flavour. Islay may be 2,000 miles west, but Bunnahabhain shares the same richness of character, so why not unite the taste of the two islands?’ Andrew Brown, Distillery Manager

Distilled and filled into traditional oak whisky casks on the 1st of December, 1988 the liquid was then transferred to four Marsala Hogsheads on the 7th of July, 2016. With a limited bottling of only 1260 bottles and presented in beautiful packaging, this is not one to miss.

The story of this precious spirit is a story of two islands – and two journeys.First, the true essence of Islay; Bunnahabhain whisky, lovingly crafted from the finest non-peated barley and crystal waters of the Margadale River. Purified in the tallest stills on the island, then left to gently mature for 30 years.Next to Sicily, where succulent grapes are harvested beneath brilliant blue skies, then expertly aged in wooden casks to make warm and soft Marsala wine.Their odysseys intertwine in 2016 in the perfect marriage of Scotland and Sicily; their whisky carefully poured into four empty Marsala hogsheads and gently laid to rest beside the Sound of Islay. Two stories. Two journeys. One exquisite taste – a cask strength Limited Release of indomitable spirit and impeccable character.

The rich oak smell washes over you, with dark chocolate and vanilla notes woven through. The taste has the merest hint of coastal brininess, with sweet dried fruit, treacle and cocoa, resulting in a dry, lingering sweet finish.

Bunnahabhain was once ruled by the sea; until 1960, all their deliveries arrived by boat. Today, the waves bring a very different cargo – crew and passengers venturing ashore, often from stunning ocean-going yachts. Their destination: our famously welcoming Islay Single Malt Scotch whisky.

The 1980 Canasta Cask Finish breathed in the briny coastal air for almost four decades, first in casks that held Oloroso sherry, then in perfectly sweet Canasta sherry oak — the very essence of their coastal distillery.

A feast of tropical fruits, berries and creamy toffee blooms into sweet oak, vanilla and rich nuts; this is a whisky to truly behold

Four long decades have crawled by as this precious whisky slowly and silently matured within our warehouses by the sea. Indeed, the casks that this whisky was maturing in were all but forgotten, until our blender discovered them whilst reviewing the warehouse ledgers. Sourced from the legendary wines and spirit merchant, J.G Turney, these casks have been home to this stunning whisky for the past forty years.

This unique 40 Year Old is as rare as it is prized – if you’re ever lucky enough to hold one, be gentle, you’re holding a piece of history!

PALATE: Sweet malt, creamy caramel, vanilla, creamy berries, with hints of toasted nuts, tropical fruit, banana and pineapple.

THE SWEET TOAST OF AMERICAN OAK

Inspired to produce an even fruitier, sweeter Balvenie, Apprentice Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie had the bright idea to import Virgin Oak barrels from Kentucky. After deep toasting them at The Balvenie Cooperage they were filled with Balvenie aged in ex-bourbon barrels. The result is a delectably complex whisky with notes of candied fruit, coconut and delicate vanilla.

NOSE: Lusciously malty with some sweet fudge, followed by citrusy and oak vanilla aromas with layers of spicy oak notes of ginger and cinnamon.

TASTE: Candied orange and lemon peel, vanilla toffee and butterscotch, layers of blossom honey, some melted brown sugar and oak spices at the end.

FINISH: Rich and malty with gentle waves of oak vanilla and subtle spices.

THE WEEK OF PEAT

Eager to experiment with The Balvenie profile using what he had learnt from a recent trip to Islay, distillery manager Ian Millar ordered a batch of Speyside peat for the kiln. For a week a year, The Balvenie distills a batch of peated malt, resulting in a whisky rich in honey, vanilla and citrus notes with an extra layer of delicate smokiness.

NOSE: Gentle sweet peat smoke, lighter floral notes and delicate butterscotch honey.

TASTE: Velvety and round to taste with the peat smoke balancing citrus flavours, oaky vanilla and blossom honey.
