The Glasgow Distillery Launches 3 Distillery Exclusive Limited Edition Single Malts!

November 16, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

Three new limited edition releases!

The Glasgow Distillery Co. has today revealed three new limited edition releases of its Glasgow 1770 Single Malt Scotch Whisky!

The new releases consist of three different whisky styles finished in three different cask types which have been sourced from three different countries. These are an Unpeated Ruby Port Cask Finish; a Triple Distilled Tokaji Cask Finish and a Peated Sauternes Cask Finish.

‘Tokaji Cask Finish’ has an outturn of just 380 bottles

Each limited edition release is individually numbered and available on the Glasgow Distillery website from 10am on Thursday 18th of November.

The ‘Ruby Port Cask Finish’ has an outturn of 467 bottles at 56.2% ABV, ‘Tokaji Cask Finish’ has an outturn of 380 bottles at 53% ABV, and ‘Sauternes Cask Finish’ has an outturn of 486 bottles at 53.7% ABV.

Each bottle comes with in-depth detail of the whisky within to showcase the true journey of the spirit from the malt variety used to the distillation style, original cask filling, type of finishing cask used and final bottling date.

Non-chill filtered and natural in colour, as is the standard for all Glasgow 1770 Single Malt Scotch Whiskies, these three limited edition releases are a true representation of The Glasgow Distillery’s innovative and experimental approach to whisky making.

Something that sets us apart from most other distilleries is that we make three very distinct styles of single malt whisky at The Glasgow Distillery. Unpeated, peated and triple distilled spirit is a key feature of our annual production calendar and is characterised within our Glasgow 1770 Signature Range.

With these three limited edition releases, we’re showcasing the incredible flexibility and versatility of our single malt by combining the different spirit styles with a range of interesting casks that we have been experimenting with at the distillery over the past couple of years.

I’m really proud to be able to offer these three releases as an insight into what we get to see every day working at the distillery – innovation, experimentation and above all a commitment to quality. I hope everyone who makes a purchase chooses to open and enjoy these really interesting expressions.
– Liam Hughes: CEO and Co-founder

Available on the distillery’s website from 10am on Thursday 18th of November!

We’re excited to offer our customers a glimpse ‘behind-the-curtain’ and into the experimentations and cask-finishing trials we have been running recently. We have a really passionate and well-informed core customer base and I’m intrigued to see their reaction to these new expressions.

The ‘Ruby Port Cask Finish’ balances our sweet and fruity unpeated spirit with lovely notes of strawberries and cream, complete with a sweet spicy finish of pink peppercorns, all gained from the fresh Ruby Port Cask.

The Triple Distilled ‘Tokaji Cask Finish’ uses this wonderfully decadent Hungarian dessert wine cask to impart sweet and honeyed notes combined with hints of toffee apples, poached pears and apricot preserve to the already vibrant and smooth triple distilled spirit.

The ‘Sauternes Cask Finish’ perfectly rounds off our peated whisky in this fantastic French dessert wine cask to give great complexity and notes of sweet and smoky BBQ sauce, toffee and salted caramel with a deep earthy finish. Definitely one for any peat-heads.
– Mike Hayward: Co-founder, and Director of Distillery & Brands

Glasgow 1770 Limited Edition: ‘Ruby Port Cask Finish’, ‘Tokaji Cask Finish’ and ‘Sauternes Cask Finish’ will be available directly and exclusively from The Glasgow Distillery website at 10am on the 18th of November 2021. Each release is restricted to two bottles per person.

Glasgow 1770 “Triple Distilled” Now Available Following Sell Out Success Of Their First Release!

June 23, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

The New Glasgow 1770 Triple Distilled!

Following the sell-out success of the inaugural Glasgow 1770 Single Malt Triple Distilled release, The Glasgow Distillery Company have just announced the release of their next Triple Distilled expression which differs slightly from the first iteration, but is equally as impressive!

The latest Glasgow 1770 Triple Distilled is crafted from the finest malted barley; distilled three times in traditional copper pot stills at The Glasgow Distillery and combined with the incredibly pure water of Loch Katrine.

The nose opens up to sweet vanilla and white chocolate leading to fresh summer fruits of aromatic apple, pear and peaches.

The palate is well balanced and smooth with vibrant vanilla, soft caramel and double cream opening up to succulent orchard fruits and berries followed by delicate floral notes alongside a sweet almond nuttiness.

The finish is long and lingering with notes of rich honey, anise and black pepper and hints of warming woody spice.

Glasgow 1770 Triple Distilled is bottled at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered and natural in colour. It is now available to purchase for £49.

Sampling “1770 Single Malt: The Coopers’ Cask Release” – Sadly Gone – But Definitely Not Forgotten!

April 28, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

The 1770 Single Malt: The Coopers’ Cask Release!

The Glasgow Distillery Company, the first independent single malt distillery to open in the city since 1902, has once again sold out of one of its releases, namely their 1770 Single Malt: The Coopers’ Cask Release, after phenomenally high demand!

With only 403 individually numbered bottles available the The Coopers’ Cask Release was the result of a collaboration between The Glasgow Distillery and US based Kelvin Cooperage. It was launched in celebration of the ancient skill of coopering; the art of creating casks made from wooden staves bound by metal hoops.
(Click here for a full write-up.)

Glasgow Distillery very kindly sent me a sample of this very special dram to try, together with a lovely tasting glass. (Thanks Glasgow Distillery!)

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

A sample to savour!

Tasting Notes – Glasgow 1770 Single Malt, The Coopers’ Cask (53.3%)

Nose: Very Creamy toffee, sweet vanilla, refreshing crisp, green apples fresh, orchard fruits.

Palate: Sweet, creamy toffee, vanilla and shades of mint.

Finish: A long finish of fiesty pepper culminating in a sweet dry ending.

Overall: A classy dram for sure! Lots going on flavour wise and the very reasonable price point gave plenty of bang for your buck. I won’t be forgetting this Whisky anytime soon!

Once again, many thanks to Glasgow Distillery (@GlasgowDC) for sending me the sample!

Only 403 Bottles of the The Coopers’ Cask were released

Glasgow Distillery Launches Exclusive “1770 Single Malt – The Coopers’ Cask Release” – Only 403 Bottles Available!

April 22, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

Glasgow 1770 Single Malt, The Coopers’ Cask Release!

The Glasgow Distillery Company has announced the launch of their first distillery exclusive single malt whisky – Glasgow 1770 Single Malt, The Coopers’ Cask!

With only 403 individually numbered bottles available to purchase direct from the Glasgow Distillery website.

The Coopers’ Cask Release is the result of a collaboration between The Glasgow Distillery and US based Kelvin Cooperage, launched in celebration of the ancient skill of coopering; the art of creating casks made from wooden staves bound by metal hoops.

The brainchild of two highly skilled coopers, Hugh McMurray from The Glasgow Distillery and Kevin McLaughlin from Kelvin Cooperage, The Coopers’ Cask Release takes the unpeated spirit from an exceptional ex-port cask filled by the Glasgow Distillery in 2015, and lays it to rest in a unique hand-built cask which consists of half heavily charred virgin oak staves from Kelvin Cooperage and half ex-Glasgow 1770 Single Malt cask staves from The Glasgow Distillery.

Only 403 individually numbered bottles will be released!

Each set of staves interlocks with the other to form one unique vessel – a perfect Hogshead – which is said to highlight the power of Kelvin Cooperage’s virgin American Oak, balanced against the wonderfully smooth and fruity spirit being produced by The Glasgow Distillery.

The result is a wonderfully balanced single malt with soft notes of honey, summer fruits and toffee, a harmonious marriage of complex sweetness with a long, rich and slightly spicy finish.

The alliance forged between The Glasgow Distillery and Kelvin Cooperage not only seeks to celebrate the relationship between cooperage and distillery, but also embodies their mutual love of Glasgow; the industrious city where both the Kelvin Cooperage and Glasgow Distillery stories began.

The Glaswegian roots of Kelvin Cooperage can be traced back to the year 1963 when, on the banks of the River Kelvin, a local man, Ed McLaughlin, opened his own cooperage and started to repair and rejuvenate casks for whisky distilleries across Scotland and Ireland.

In the early 1990’s, Ed saw that the bourbon trade in the US was booming and, supported by his two sons Kevin and Paul, moved the business to Louisville, Kentucky where they began to service some of the biggest and best distilleries and wine producers in the country.

Despite being located at the other side of the Atlantic, the two brothers never forgot their roots and made frequent returns back to their home city, Glasgow.

Fast forward to 2012, The Glasgow Distillery sets out on a mission to bring single malt distilling back to the city, soon becoming Glasgow’s first independent single malt distillery for over one hundred years. The distillery then embark on a journey to find casks of the highest quality within which they could mature their spirit. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the name of a Kentucky-based cooperage was suggested, a familiar name: Kelvin Cooperage.

We are delighted to be collaborating with The Glasgow Distillery on The Coopers’ Cask Release. The Coopers’ Cask has been launched with the vision to bring our craftsmanship and expertise back to our home city of Glasgow in a way that is truly unique. This is Glasgow-distilled single malt, matured in a hand-built cask made by not just one, but two sets of Glasgow hands.

It is, however, with a heavy heart that we announce that Kevin, my much loved brother, Kelvin Cooperage’s fearless leader and one of the cooper’s who made this collaboration possible, passed away in December 2019 before the launch of this release. The Coopers’ Cask Release is therefore launched in honour of Kevin, who was instrumental in bringing this project together and whose memory lives on within the spirit.
– Paul McLaughlin: owner of Kelvin Cooperage

We’re very excited to launch our first Glasgow 1770 distillery exclusive – The Coopers’ Cask Release. This unique hand-built cask – cask no 15/87 – is the physical embodiment of the relationship that exists between cooperage and distillery and ultimately, the relationship between wood and spirit – the fundamental elements that come together to make great single malt scotch.

Kevin and Paul embraced our vision from the outset and we quickly became friends so it is a bitter sweet moment to launch The Coopers’ Cask Release without Kevin here to witness it. We are very grateful to the whole McLaughlin family for their continued support throughout this project, especially as it has been a particularly difficult time for them all.
– Liam Hughes: CEO and Co-Founder of The Glasgow Distillery

Glasgow 1770 Single Malt Scotch Whisky – The Coopers’ Cask Release – is The Glasgow Distillery’s first distillery exclusive bottling.

Each of the 403 individually numbered bottles come packaged in an individually numbered presentation carton, each containing a booklet that tells the tale behind the collaboration cask.
The spirit within is non-chill filtered and natural in colour, bottled at a strength of 53.3% ABV and priced at £59 per bottle, exclusively available to purchase on the The Glasgow Distillery website: glasgowdistillery.com.
