Sampling The Limited-Edition Whisky Me Burns Night Tasting Trio!

January 26, 2024 by Gary Leave a Comment

The limited-edition Burns Night Tasting Trio!

To celebrate yesterdays Burns Night, a special three dram tasting was hosted by Whisky Me, the UK’s biggest whisky subscription club, on YouTube.

Led by Whisky Me founders Thomas Aske and Tristan Stephenson, they were also joined by Hugh Barron from James Eadie Ltd.

The limited-edition Burns Night Tasting Trio comprised each of the following Whisky Me exclusive bottlings, in partnership with some of the most esteemed Scottish distilleries:

  • Benrinnes, 9-Year-Old James Eadie
  • Glenlossie, 2017 Càrn Mòr (Whisky Me’s Traditional dram for subscribers this January)
  • Teaninich, 5-Year-Old Càrn Mòr

Don’t worry if you missed the tasting though because you can watch it here!

Whisky Me was founded by Thomas Aske and Tristan Stephenson of Black Rock – the east London bar that’s made whisky accessible to all since 2016.

It is a Whisky Club for The Curious and promises a monthly dram of incredible Single Malt Scotch or World Whisky – curated from the planet’s best distilleries – delivered to your door.

Being snobby or elitist about whisky is not part of their ethos. They know there’s no such thing as a typical whisky drinker and to prove it, their aim is to drop drams of the world’s greatest whiskies through as many letterboxes as possible!

As part of the celebrations Whisky Me has provided the following code with a 20% discount on full bottle versions of last nights Burns Night tastings: BURNS20

Valid until midnight Sunday 4th February!

Whisky Me kindly sent me the three Burns Night samples to try. (Thanks Whisky Me! / @whisky_me_)

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Benrinnes, 9-Year-Old James Eadie Single Malt Scotch Whisky (46%)

LOCATION: SPEYSIDE
AGE: 9 YEARS OLD
CASK: BOURBON HOGSHEADS

This Whisky Me exclusive bottling from James Eadie Ltd. is not a typical Benrinnes – a distillery associated with sherry cask finishing and the dried fruits that come with it – because it is matured in bourbon barrels. Thus, the underlying meaty character of the distillery is revealed.

Nose: Very syrupy fruity apples with brown sugar, molasses, cola, sultanas and popcorn and much, much later very creamy caramel – a mixed bag indeed!

Palate: Dark, spicy wood with plump fruits, apples and dark chocolate giving way to a dry popcorn finish with peppery spice.

Overall: There’s plenty going on with this dram and for those who literally crave the ‘spirit’ of adventure then this is certainly the whisky for you!

Tasting Notes – Glenlossie, 2017 Càrn Mòr Single Malt Scotch Whisky (47.5%)

LOCATION: HIGHLAND
AGE: 5 YEARS OLD
CASK: EX-BOURBON

This Glenlossie was distilled in 2017 and matured in a pair of bourbon barrels. This produced 500 bottles in total, most of which have gone into Whisky Me pouches.

Nose: Tropical fruits with pressed orange, ginger and vanilla.

Palate: Blood oranges, toffee, a little mint and hot pepper and ginger.

Overall: A Gorgeous “orange” experience but also much, much more. If only this dram was part of your “5-a-day!”

Tasting Notes – Teaninich, 5-Year-Old Càrn Mòr Single Malt Scotch Whisky (47.5%)

LOCATION: HIGHLAND
AGE: 5 YEARS OLD
CASK: BOURBON

This Whisky Me exclusive bottling in partnership with Carn Mor is a marriage of bourbon cask whiskies from Teaninich that were distilled in late 2017 and disgorged in 2023.
We cut the spirit to 47.5% which produced exactly 500 bottles, most of which have gone into Whisky Me pouches.

Nose: Fruity chews with green tea and strawberry.

Palate: Creamy strawberry, herb tea, apples and sweet chocolate with a savoury, peppery finish.

Overall: Creamy strawberries – who would have thought? Anyway, it’s here in this whisky in a true taste bud treat!

Don’t forget to use the Whisky Me code to receive a 20% discount on full bottle versions of last nights Burns Night tastings: BURNS20

Valid until midnight Sunday 4th February!

Celebrate Burns Night With J&B Rare’s Bobby Burns Cocktail!

January 14, 2020 by Gary Leave a Comment

The J&B Rare ‘Bobby Burns’

Are you celebrating Burns Night on the 25th January 2020?

If you are, why not raise a glass to Robert Burns with the classic Bobby Burns cocktail? Especially as it has been given an unexpected ‘Rare’ twist by world-renowned Jason Scott, owner of Bramble Bar and the iconic blended Scotch whisky, J&B Rare!

Now in its 219th year, Burns Night is a true celebration of friends, food and whisky

Created in the 1930’s (at the very same time the first known printed recipe of the Bobby Burns appeared in Harry Craddock’s The Savoy Cocktail Book), J&B Rare has a light flavour profile, which makes it the perfect canvas for whisky cocktails such as The Bobby Burns.

Craddock’s original recipe called for Italian Vermouth and Scotch Whisky with 3 dashes of bitters, Jason Scott’s twist on the traditional combines J&B Rare with Balthazar Vermouth, Benedictine and Peychaud bitters, creating a subtle yet complex Bobby Burns.

Now in its 219th year, Burns Night is a true celebration of friends, food and whisky. What better way to mark the occasion than with Jason’s instant classic?

To make the J&B Rare Bobby Burns simply:

  • Add ice to a cocktail shaker
  • Pour in 50ml J&B Rare
  • 25ml Balthazar Vermouth
  • 5ml Benedictine
  • 2 dashes of Peychaud Bitters
  • Stir and strain into a chilled coupe glass
  • Garnish with a fresh lemon peel twist

J&B Rare has been distilled, blended and bottled in Scotland since the 1930’s and is a blend of 42 malt and grain whiskies. The heart of J&B Rare is formed from the finest Speyside malts including Knockando, Glen Spey, Auchriosk and Strathmill. The blend is returned to the cask for a further three years’ maturation which brings together the bold flavours of the single malts with the lighter grain whiskies adding fullness and depth to the blend.

Kilchoman’s whiskies – an ideal accompaniment to Burns’ Suppers!

January 10, 2014 by Gary Leave a Comment

Kilchoman's whiskies - an ideal accompaniment to Burns' Suppers!

Kilchoman’s whiskies – an ideal accompaniment to Burns’ Suppers!

Kilchoman has three outstanding whiskies which would make an ideal accompaniment to Burns’ night later this month.

The Kilchoman 2007 Vintage is the oldest single malt Kilchoman has released to date and recently won the Whisky Advocate’s Award for Islay Single Malt of the Year 2013.

The unique 100% Islay is the only Single Malt in Scotland where every stage of the whisky making process, from the barley grown in the surrounding fields to the malting, distillation, maturation and bottling, takes place at the distillery.

Machir Bay is bottled once a year, and each release contains more mature casks allowing connoisseurs of Kilchoman to follow the development of the unique malt as it matures.

First launched in 2012, Machir Bay has since won several prestigious awards including IWSC 2012 Gold Medal Best in Class and Whisky of the Year at the International Whisky Competition.

Tasting Notes: Kilchoman 2007 Single Islay Malt

Colour: light beech darkening with age
Nose: smoky vanilla and caramel notes with cooked fruits, lemon and citrus
Palate: butterscotch and soft citrus fruit with a lasting sweetness
Finish: peaty and fruity with a long lingering sweetness

Dave Broom: “In this expression you get full integration between oak and distillery, a sparkling mix of seashell, the freshness of seaweed, mixed with churned butter, driftwood, and fresh-kilned peat. On the tongue, there’s samphire, peat, sweet barley, and an herbal kick.”

Tasting Notes: Kilchoman 100% Single Islay Malt Scotch Whisky, 3rd Edition

Nose: Floral and delicate with a mix of soft fruits and pear drops
Palate: The peat smoke explodes in the mouth with sweet soft mixed fruit very evident
Finish: A long sweet lingering finish with a soft peaty after taste

Tasting Notes: Machir Bay

Colour: light beech.
Nose: Soft cooked fruits with strong peaty aromas.
Palate: Mixed fruits and vanilla with an intense sweetness.
Finish: A long lingering finish. A classic Islay malt now showing the benefit of additional ageing.
