Jura Whisky Honours Diurachs Worldwide With ‘One For You’ 18 Year Old Limited Release!

June 27, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

A specially selected limited edition 18 year old expression

Jura Single Malt Whisky has unveiled the final instalment of a limited-edition series, that celebrates community spirit and raises a glass to all the Diurachs across the globe, fittingly named One For You.

The 18 YO Limited Edition will retail for around £130

The celebratory 18-year-old single malt is matured in American White Oak ex-bourbon barrels and further enhanced by virgin American White Oak quarter casks, hand selected by our whisky making team.

The enhancement in fresh oak adds extra character to the flavour, with more of the malt exposed to the wood. This small batch release (52.5% ABV – Cask Strength), which is non-chill filtered and natural colour, is available in select markets with an RSP of £130.

One For You completes the three-piece collection started in 2016 with One For The Road, a commemorative bottling to mark the retirement of Jura’s Distillery Manger, Willie Cochrane.

A year later, Jura released One And All, a single malt assemblage created in celebration of Jura’s community and the team of distillery workers who craft the award-winning whisky.

The trio is concluded by the latest limited edition launched today, One For You – in homage to Diurachs worldwide who share the spirit of Jura’s island community.

Jura was established in 1810 and reborn in 1963 to revive the community

Visitors to the Jura Whisky Festival on 31 May 2018 were treated to an exclusive pre-release allowing them to purchase the limited edition which was brought to the island the night before festival day.

This special limited-edition expression has been created with our extended community in mind, with flavours of honey, vanilla, almond and white chocolate it is the perfect whisky to toast those who embrace the Jura spirit worldwide.
– Graham Logan: Distillery Manager

Jura Single Malt Whisky Unveils New Signature Series!

March 5, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

Priced from £33.00 to £75.00 the new range will roll out globally from April 2018.

JURA – A LONG WAY FROM ORDINARY

Hours away from the Scottish mainland, miles away from ‘ordinary’; Jura might not be the easiest place to make whisky, but we believe it’s the best. One road, one pub and one distillery – and home to a determined community spirit. Free from distractions, we focus entirely on one thing – making the very best single malt whisky we can.

Jura 18 (44% ABV)

This focus has now led us to a new place. A place reflective of our past, present and future where we can reveal a different side of our character. Signifying the start of a new chapter in our rich story, we have created a new signature style for Jura Single Malt Whisky, a style reminiscent of our past but with a firm eye on the future. An Island future shaped and supported with every step we take.

The whisky itself sees a subtle smokiness brought together with a sweetness to create our new defining character. This sees us, for the first time, marry together the classic styles of Highland and Island malts, and unify these in one remarkable whisky.

Our signature has been brought to life through the creation of range of five distinctive single malts. This range tells a story. A story rooted in, and reflective of, those elements which make Jura so unique.

We start with Journey before moving to 10 and 12 Years Old Jura, and into an entirely new world with Seven Wood and then concluding with 18 Years Old. Each and every whisky has been created to showcase an incredible new flavour, in their own individual way.

From cinnamon, pears and pecans to black forest fruits and bitter chocolate, the diversity of flavours gives you approachable and welcoming combinations which will captivate you into the world of Jura.

This marks a hugely significant step for Jura. A new house style of whisky is not for the faint hearted but it tells you where we are now and how committed we are to Jura, the community and our whiskies for the long term.

Combining two styles of whisky is a fairly unorthodox approach, but one that we know is right for Jura. We can’t wait for people to try and it and see for themselves.
– Graham Logan: Jura Distillery Manager

Jura Celebrates Island Community With One And All Release!

September 1, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

Jura Single Malt Whisky toasts distillery team with specially selected limited edition 20 year old!

Jura releases new limited edition bottle celebrating island community!

One And All will be available online and in shops from 1st September.

Jura Single Malt Whisky has today, unveiled a new limited edition expression, created in celebration of Jura’s community and the team of distillery workers who craft the award-winning whisky. Chosen by them, it’s fittingly named One And All.

This celebratory 20 year old single malt assemblage, which is non-chill filtered and natural colour, raises a glass to the distillery team and island community who make the whisky what it is today. A must-have collectable for whisky fans, with the community at the heart of it, this small batch release (51% ABV – Cask strength) is available globally with an RSP of £120.

The community on Jura, a remote and beautiful island nestled off the West Coast of Scotland, has a unique bond with whisky. Around 200 people inhabit Jura’s landscape, outnumbered by more than 5,000 red deer which roam the island’s vast, empty planes. Together, the Diurachs (the name for people who live on Jura) and the distillery have rebuilt a thriving local economy since re-opening the distillery over 50 years ago. It’s this tenacity of Jura’s people, which makes the island and its whisky so special – a community of few, shaped by a passion for the island they live on, brought there through family, fate and history.

The realities of living on a remote island in a small community means that everyone has to work together for the benefit of one and all. Nowhere is this bond stronger than at Jura Distillery.

On the 6th of February 2017, the Jura Distillery team got together to choose this year’s Limited Edition bottling. An uncommon single malt, One And All is matured in American White Oak ex-bourbon barrels and specially prepared with Jura aged in Sherry wood, Sparkling Cabernet Franc casks, Cabernet Sauvignon casks and Pinot Noir barriques.

There’s no better way to mark the distillery team’s dedication and craftsmanship, than by creating a limited edition expression in their honour – chosen by them.

In tribute to their passion and tenacity – the shared spirit that each person brings to every last drop – this special whisky is the perfect dram to toast one and all. We can’t wait to hear what people think.
– Graham Logan: Distillery Manager

One And All is now available online and in shops.

Jura has very kindly sent me a sample to try.
So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Jura Whisky Launches Dram-Packed Tastival 2017!

April 27, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

Jura Single Malt Whisky’s Annual Island Whisky Festival Returns

Tickets are now on sale for Jura Tastival 2017 – which returns for a one-day single malt spectacular on Thursday 1st June, offering new ways to enjoy whisky, through a busy programme of one-of-a-kind taste experiences.

The event will run as part of the annual Feis Ile Festival, which attracts whisky fans from all over the world to distillery open days on Islay and neighbouring island, Jura, each year.

Tastival will see Jura’s only whisky distillery throw open its doors to put on a number of free and ticketed activities – from unique whisky tastings and tours, to live entertainment – including music from legendary Scots Trad band RURA – and a chance to join the Jura community at special meet and greets with the distillery team.

This year’s Tastival event is limited to one day only (it has spanned two days in previous years) – so whisky lovers are advised get in early to snap up tickets, which are set to be in high demand.

This year’s ticketed sessions include:
· The Jura Long Table – Dine with the Diurachs (the name for Jura’s community) at this ‘getting to know you’ session. A special one off lunch in the distillery’s Grainstore, guests will join the locals (including some distillery staff) to hear stories on island life as they enjoy Jura’s laid back take on street food, prepared with the freshest local produce, each dish designed to pair with a dram of Jura whisky.

· All Terrain Whisky Tasting – Discover the different sides of Jura and learn how the landscape inspires a whisky range as unique as the island itself. Venturing far beyond the realms of the distillery, the Jura bus will stop off at locations from serene beaches, to craggy mountain foots – with a whisky inspired by each location stashed for guests to find (if they listen to the clues) at every stop.

· Whisky 101 – Meet Whyte & Mackay Whisky Maker & Blender Gregg Glass in this unique session designed for both whisky newcomers and aficionados alike. Smashing perceptions on traditional whisky tastings, guests will be invited to take on a different ‘state of mind’ when it comes to single malt – sampling Jura in a number of non-fluid states, before an anonymous Q&A will give visitors the chance can ask anything they ever wanted to know about whisky…but were too afraid to ask!

· The Single Malt Masterclass – An exclusive masterclass hosted by Jura Distillery Manager Graham Logan, honorary distillers will get on-the-job whisky making experience – from learning how to keep a careful watch over the spirit gauge, to testing the mash tun and wash backs, rolling a barrel through the warehouse and siphoning whisky straight from the cask.

· Jura Jetty – Ticketholders will arrive at Tastival in true island style, cruising from Islay’s Port Askaig directly to Jura’s Craighouse, delivered to the heart of the event by Captain Nicol. On their journey, guests will enjoy a special tasting of travel retail exclusive Jura Turas-Mara the way it was meant to be experienced – with the wind and sea spray in your face.

Music, live entertainment and the opportunity chance to sample Jura’s range will be available in the Dramming Bar in the distillery’s Cooperage, where guests will have the first opportunity to try, and purchase, Tastival 2017, Jura’s limited edition bottling created to mark the festival.

A £5 general entry fee will include a brochure, souvenir glass and two drams at the bar. A cash bar will be available thereafter, with a full drinks menu including drams, cocktails and an exclusive Drygate beer brewed to pair with Jura’s Tastival 2017 bottling.

The distillery will also run free tours of the still house throughout the day on a first come, first served basis.

The island event will kick off a schedule of localised Tastival events to take place in Europe throughout the summer, and which will be announced in the coming weeks.

Ticketed sessions vary between £15 – £45, with entry to the heart of the action in the Cooperage costing just £5 (including goody bag and two drams). Tickets on sale now.

Getting there from Islay: Jura will operate a free passenger ferry and coach shuttle service to and from the Port Feolin ferry station. For more information see www.jurawhisky.com.

Premium Jura gift tins: a festive collectible for whisky lovers this Christmas

Jura Whisky captures the spirit of its unique island home in a range of collectable, festive gift tins, perfect for whisky lovers and set to be at the top of Christmas lists this winter.

Handcrafted like Jura’s tall stills, the intricate designs reflect the different sides of the island, from the calm, palm tree-lined bays of the East, to the wild, rugged shores of the West. Each tin features delicately embossed, flowing lines, mirroring both the iconic curved Jura bottle shape and the outline of the island itself.

Carefully sourced ingredients and a unique distillation process bring a full range of flavours to each of the expressions in the Jura collection, offering drinkers the opportunity to explore the diverse tastes and flavours of the island’s craft, community and coastlines:

· Jura Origin is aged in ex-Bourbon casks for 10 years, with notes of caramel, honey and soft liquorice. Origin was born during the rebirth of the distillery in 1963 and marks the start of Jura’s long line of hand-crafted whiskies. With a light, delicate and warming honey finish, it is the perfect ingredient for hot toddies on a cold winter’s night.

· Diurachs’ Own – this rich, full-bodied 16 year old whisky pays tribute to the Diurachs – the Gaelic name for the community of Jura. Aged in American white oak and sherry casks, Diurachs’ Own captures the indulgent side of Christmas, with notes of dark chocolate, orange and honey.

The Isle of the Unexpected? Jura Relocates to London!

October 11, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

Jura takes its island to central London, as it learns that 70% of Londoners don’t know where it is!

Jura takes its island to central London, as it learns that 70% of Londoners don’t know where it is!

Jura Whisky announces that it is taking its remote island home to London – as it reveals that more than 70% of Londoners don’t know where it is, geographically.

While almost half knew of the island’s Single Malt Scotch Whisky, a massive 72.5% of 1,000 Londoners surveyed didn’t actually know where to find it on a map – with 12% thinking it is somewhere in England, 10% thinking it is in Hungary and 14% of those surveyed unable to guess at Jura’s location (Jura surveyed 1,000 Londoners through One Poll).

Now Jura wants to put its island home in the spotlight, giving Londoners a unique chance to explore its incredible coastlines, community, culture and craft without leaving the city – with a new experiential event created in collaboration with immersive art duo Art of Disappearing.

From 13th October, The Isle of the Unexpected invites Londoners to join an interactive, mystery adventure to help a fictional film director, Eric, find the inspiration he needs to finish his script. The answer lies on the island of Jura, which ticketholders can access through a secret door in The Looking Glass bar in Shoreditch. Londoners can expect to discover the island over a dram or two as they are guided by audio headset through physical sets, experience virtual reality flight and hunt for clues.

Nestled in the Inner Hebrides just off the West Coast of Scotland, the isle of Jura is as beautiful as it is remote. It has just one road, one pub, one shop and one iconic distillery, which employs 10% of the island’s population to craft Jura’s single malt whisky. Jura is just over half the size of central London, except with a population of just 200 people, who are vastly outnumbered by over 6,000 deer which roam the island.

This isn’t the first time Jura’s location has caused confusion – in 2013, it made headlines as it fell off Google maps. And while the general population in London might be unsure of its whereabouts, Jura’s remote location and dramatic coastlines have certainly made an impression amongst the cultural community – author George Orwell wrote 1984 while living there and the KLF notoriously burned one million pounds on the island. Jura has also served as a writing retreat for a number of musicians, most recently the Glaswegian band Errors, which wrote tracks for the album Lease of Life there.

People don’t know exactly where on the map you can find us. I’m not surprised as it can take up to 16 hours by train, plane, ferry and car to get from London to Jura and back again – but I’m proud of our award winning whiskies, which are enjoyed across the whole world.
Our island, distillery and community is full of wonderful stories just waiting to be uncovered, and it has inspired many authors and artists over the years. We welcome hundreds of visitors to the island every year, though The Isle of the Unexpected is the next best thing for those who want to discover the different sides of Jura and can’t make the long trip!

Jura Whisky Releases ‘One For The Road’ For Willie Cochran – Mechanic, ‘Diurach’, Legend!

Willie Cochran; Mechanic, ‘Diurach’, Legend!

Jura Single Malt Whisky has unveiled a limited edition expression to mark the retirement of celebrated Distillery Manager, Willie Cochrane – fittingly named ‘One For The Road’.

This specially bottled 22 year old single malt, complete with exceptional ‘Pinot Noir’ finish, celebrates Willie’s 39 year career with Jura, and the story of one of whisky’s best loved characters. A must-have collectable for whisky fans, only 5,000 bottles (47% ABV) are available globally with an RSP of £120.

Willie’s captivating story begins in 1977, when he first arrived on Jura with the intention of staying for only one year (he was there to sell a car and was approached by the Distillery Manager with the offer of a job, thanks to his mechanical skills). Though he initially had little knowledge of whisky, he worked his way up through the years developing his talent for crafting extraordinary single malts. He has become a true ‘Diurach’ – the Gaelic term for the community of Jura!

Over the next 39 years, Willie became a celebrated part of the very fabric of Jura, renowned in the industry for his friendliness and expertise and earning prestigious titles for the whisky. A true ambassador for the brand, Willie has welcomed thousands of visitors from across the globe to the distillery, guiding them through the quality craftsmanship and dedication that goes into producing each cask of Jura.

The Distillery was reopened in the 1960s with the aim of saving the island community and now produces one of the most globally renowned malts in the world. It begins its next chapter with newly promoted Graham Logan at its helm. Graham, a former Jura Mash/ Stillman, has worked at Willie’s side for over two decades and hopes to put his own stamp on the distillery, while building its reputation for producing award-winning spirits.

As he bids farewell, Willie will embark on a tour, inviting a Europe wide community of honorary Diurachs (the Gaelic term for Jura’s community) to enjoy a final dram with him, embarking upon a whistle-stop tour around the continent to introduce the final Jura expression bottled in his care.

From 17th Sept – 1st October 2016, Willie will visit Brussels, Lyon, Hamburg, Paris, Cologne and Stockholm to meet whisky fans and conduct tastings of the limited edition, One For The Road expression.

One of the perks of my job is meeting people who have travelled to the island from far and wide to share their appreciation for whisky with me and the team at the distillery.

Now that I have the opportunity, I can think of no better way to repay the favour than releasing one final expression – one for the road – to share with them.
– Willie Cochrane

Nobody embodies Jura’s spirit quite like Willie, so it’s a fitting tribute to a man who has contributed so much to our small, but passionate island. I’ll be raising a glass alongside the rest of the community as we wave Willie off on his next adventure.

Tastival 2016 Bottling Brings Festival Flavours to Life!

“We always aim to push boundaries with our Tastival bottlings …”

Jura Single Malt Whisky has revealed its Tastival 2016 bottling, a new limited edition expression to mark the distillery’s annual island whisky festival. The flavours within this remarkable single malt have inspired Jura’s first ever ‘crowd sourced’ packaging, chosen by the whisky’s social media followers.

Jura Tastival, which takes place on 25 & 26 May this year, celebrates new and exciting ways to enjoy whisky – and the creation of this year’s festival edition is no exception, with a triple sherry finish, using hand-selected casks.

To complement its sweet and intense flavour, Jura asked four artists from across the world to create a unique illustrated packaging design based upon their interpretations of the Tastival 2016 bottling, which is 51% ABV, non-chill filtered.

Following heated competition, where fans voted for their favourite design online, Jura can now reveal that its first ever crowd sourced packaging is based on the artwork created by German artist Florian Schommer.

The intricate design incorporates Florian’s personal tasting notes for the whisky, including apple, represented by branches, notes of vanilla, captured in delicate white flowers and a colour scheme based on an aromatic blend of maple syrup and roasted hazelnut.

Other artists who competed to win the Tastival packaging contract included French illustrator Yo Az, UK based Claire Scully and Karin Ohlsson from Sweden. Their colourful array of designs can still be viewed on Jura’s Facebook page.

The limited edition bottling is the last Tastival expression to be overseen by much-loved Jura Distillery Manager, Willie Cochrane, who announced his retirement last week. He hands over the reins to Graham Logan, a former Jura Mash / Stillman who has worked at his side for over two decades.

Every limited edition is special, but this one’s particularly close to my heart as it commemorates my last Jura Tastival, which has been a highlight on my calendar for the past ten years.

It wouldn’t be Tastival without something a bit different to inspire new perspectives on whisky, and I’m sure Florian Schommer’s wonderful illustrations will do just that!
– Willie Cochrane

We always aim to push boundaries with our Tastival bottlings and the triple sherry finish on this new expression is a perfect example of the creativity and craftsmanship I want to continue to encourage in my role as distillery manager.
– Graham Logan

Tastival guests will have first opportunity to try and purchase this year’s limited edition bottling at the festival on 25 & 26 May, where they will be invited to share their own whisky tasting notes. Jura Tastival 2016 will be available online and in shops globally (excluding US) RRP £85 from 30 May 2016.
