One Last Tastival: Jura Distillery Manager Willie Cochrane Announces Retirement!

May 16, 2016 by Gary 2 Comments

Tastival Attendees Invited to Toast Willie’s Retirement with the Man Himself

Tastival Attendees Invited to Toast Willie’s Retirement with the Man Himself

Whisky lovers from across the globe are invited to join Willie Cochrane – Jura Distillery Manager and one of the industry’s best-loved characters – at his last ever Tastival from 25-26 May, as he announces his retirement after an incredible 39 year career.

Willie’s friendliness, expertise and passion for the job has made him a celebrated figure in whisky circles and to this day, he loves welcoming visitors from far and wide, guiding them through the craft and expertise that goes into producing each cask of Jura.

He hands over the reins to Graham Logan, a former Jura Mash / Stillman who has worked at Willie’s side for over two decades, helping Jura become the award-winning success it is today.

But before Willie departs, the pair will take attendees at Tastival – Jura’s annual two-day whisky festival – on a journey through the senses, as they help the island’s honorary Diurachs (the Gaelic term for the community of Jura) discover different ways to enjoy whisky.

Willie and Graham will be leading The Master’s Tour; a rare chance to experience the Jura still house, as seen through the eyes of the people who make it, including a whisky tasting and Q&A session.
The pair will be also be signing bottles of this year’s limited edition Tastival bottling at the event – where guests will be amongst the first in the world to try this special expression, the last ever festival bottling to be overseen by Willie.

Jura is just as important to me now, as it has been for the last 39 years. I’ll find it hard to walk away completely, so I’ll still be involved in promoting the whisky from time to time. Definitely not a quiet retirement but one I’m very excited about, especially as I’ll have more time for the grandchildren, and to take holidays abroad with my wife!

Graham and I have worked together for years and I know he’s the right man for the job. I’ll sleep well at night knowing the distillery is in capable hands, with someone who loves Jura just as much as I do.
– Willie Cochrane

Willie Cochrane will be a hard act to follow – he is something of a legend and rightly so. Willie played a huge part in making the distillery the success it is today and has been an asset to the quality of the whisky that we produce.

I hope to be able to put my own stamp on the distillery, while maintaining the same level of craftsmanship and, overseeing some fantastic new bottlings.
– Graham Logan

This year’s ticketed sessions include:

• Dram Fyne – In partnership with renowned craft beer brewers, Fyne Ales, tickets are now on sale for this sweet and smoky themed beer pairing, putting some well hopped IPAs to the test alongside Jura whisky.

Following heated competition, where fans voted for their favourite design online, Jura’s first ever crowd sourced packaging is ready to be revealed – and toasted – live at Tastival 2016.

Jura Release Limited Edition Tastival 2015!

May 27, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

Jura Tastival 2015

Jura Tastival 2015

A limited edition Jura Tastival bottling 2015 is unveiled today, marking the launch of the island’s Tastival 2015 celebrations on 27 & 28 May.

Willie Cochranes Notes

Willie Cochranes Notes

The intriguing notes of this expertly crafted single malt – casked in Sparkling Rose Wine barriques, exclusive to Jura – deliver a festival of flavour for whisky lovers.

With only 3,970 bottles available, Jura Tastival 2015’s rich and fruity flavour is influenced by its maturation in specially selected sparkling wine barrels from the chalk cellars of the House of Bouvet Ladubay in Saumur, Maine-et-Loire, France.

The whisky is non-chill filtered and bottled at cask strength, 52% ABV.

Distilled in 1997 and bottled 18 years later, Jura Tastival 2015, is full of distinctive flavour notes. Fans of the brand may detect raspberries and a hint of spice on the nose, with tangy blackcurrants and ginger spiced pears to taste.

A collaboration with Drygate Brewing Co. will also see a limited edition craft beer released to pair with Jura Tastival 2015, inspired by the aromatic single malt.

Richard Patersons Notes

Richard Patersons Notes

Made in an extremely limited run, this beer will be available to taste at an on island craft beer session held as part of Tastival 2015, or on tap at Drygate during the week of the festival.

Our annual Tastival celebrations are much anticipated by Jura fans, so it’s fitting that we release an extraordinary, limited edition single malt each year to mark the occasion.
This year’s festival focuses on bringing taste to life, and Jura Tastival 2015 does just that, with a fruity, character-filled dram, that we’re sure our customers will interpret in a number of exciting ways.
– Willie Cochrane: Jura Distillery Manager

Jura Tastival 2015 is on sale now for £85 at the whisky festival and from selected whisky specialists.

The festival will bring taste to life in the Cooperage, where a street artist will paint the personal tasting notes of attendees live on the walls of the distillery while they sample a dram from Jura’s range, resulting in a continuously evolving mural of flavour.

An experiential dining session, inspired by the sweet and smoky sides of Jura’s whiskies, will be hosted by Dram & Smoke and fans can also enjoy a specially brewed bottle of craft beer from Drygate Brewing Co., which has been created to pair with the limited edition Jura Tastival whisky.

Unique tasting sessions from the rarest casks in Jura’s warehouse will take place with Master Distiller, Richard Paterson, and a special distillery tour and tasting will see Jura Master Distiller, Willie Tait and Jura Distillery Manager, Willie Cochrane relay their stories about the passion and dedication it takes to craft the Jura range.

Willie Cochrane, Jura Distillery Manager: “Jura may be a small island, but we extend a large welcome to whisky fans from all over world every year at Tastival.”

“This year’s festival focuses on bringing flavour to life and offering fans new ways to appreciate whisky. Jura 1984 Vintage Unveiled!

November 16, 2014 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Jura 1984 Vintage

The Jura 1984 Vintage

In 1984, Jura casked a small quantity of unambiguously excellent single malt whisky and, thirty years later, Jura 1984 Vintage, has been released as a limited edition malt.

There are only 1,984 individually numbered bottles available worldwide, with a retail price of £750.

With this new rare and richly aromatic malt, Jura continues to surprise with the uncommon masterpieces that are created on its unpolished shores.
Jura 1984 Vintage has an intense and uncensored taste matured in American White Oak, Amoroso and Apostoles Oloroso sherry butt casks.
Each extraordinary bottle is non-chill filtered at 44% ABV.

As always, Jura invites customers to share their own tasting notes, but whisky lovers are likely to find a suggestion of honey, vanilla, ginger, peach syrup and banana cake on the nose.
On the palette, hints of ripe pineapple will develop into bitter chocolate and finish with rich morello cherries.

Jura 1984 Vintage honours the connection to the writer George Orwell who wrote the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four whilst staying on the island.

Rebuilt in 1963 to revive a remote community nestled off the West Coast of Scotland, Jura has one road, one pub, one shop and one distillery which creates a uniquely crafted mix of whiskies completely unlike any others.

Willie Cochrane, Jura Distillery Manager said: “Every good malt whisky has a story to tell and Jura’s tale is particularly unique. We’re delighted to add another exciting chapter with the release of this extraordinary limited edition vintage. Jura 1984 Vintage is an uncompromising addition to our range in homage to the island’s most distinguished guest. 1984 is certainly a year to remember.”

Summary: In the early 1700’s the Campbells of Jura evicted a wise old seer. Bristling with resentment, she prophesised that the last Campbell to leave the island would be one-eyed with his belongings carried in a cart drawn by a lone white horse. Over time the story became legend and the prophecy drifted from memory. Until 1938, when Charles Campbell, blind in one eye from the Great War, fell on hard times and led his white horse to the old pier for the last time.

Isle Of Jura - 1977 Vintage

Isle Of Jura – 1977 Vintage
Country: Scotland   Region: IsleofJura
Age:    Strength: 46%
Summary: This uniquely crafted 1977 vintage takes its name from the Gaelic word for the Yew tree. Translated as ‘Juar’, the yew tree has long been associated with immortality and regeneration. Some believe it brings access to the ‘otherworld’. MATURED TO PERFECTION: Filled to cask in 1977, this vintage release was originally matured in three first fill bourbon casks before being finished in a ruby port pipe for 12 months. It has absorbed the character and colour that only comes with careful aging.   TASTING NOTES Colour: Warm amber. Nose: Subtle notes of Peach Melba, creamy caramel, ripe sweet pineapple and maple syrup. Taste: Prolonged sensations of crushed pear, passion fruit, kiwi and sweet apricots. CRAFTED BY HAND: The 1977 vintage is presented in solid oak box hand crafted by Scottish based cabinet maker, John Galvin. John has hand carved all 498 boxes individually; each is a testament to his experience and dedication to craft. Jura are proud to collaborate with someone who takes craft as seriously as they do.

Isle Of Jura - 30 Year Old Camas An Staca

Isle Of Jura – 30 Year Old Camas An Staca
Country: Scotland   Region: IsleofJura
Age: 30 Year Old.   Strength: 44%
Summary: This monumental 30 year old takes its name from Jura’s largest standing stone, the Camas an Staca. This is the latest rare and vintage malt to have been nurtured and crafted at the Jura distillery. It is a unique result of pure spring water, clean fresh air and generations of tradition. A MONUMENTAL MALT: 27 long years in American white oak and a final three in the finest amorosso sherry casks from Gonzalez Byass, have crafted a masterpiece – a malt that will truly stand the test of time, much like the Camas an Staca itself.   TASTING NOTES Colour: Dark walnut. Nose: Whispers of sea spray, spicy apple and honeyed figs linger in the background. Taste: Fleshy oranges, tangy liquorice and sweet pineapple are followed by orange rind, black cherries, dark toffee and sun dried raisins. EXQUISITE PACKAGING: The iconic Jura bottle is encased in a beautiful box that opens its doors to reveal the story of the whisky and the history of the Camas an Staca. Meticulously detailed, the bottle has a simplicity and dignity that befits the great stone itself – an approach that culminates in the creation of an elegant motif that captures the scale and grandeur of Jura’s largest standing stone.
