The Royal Salute 52 & 25 Year Olds – New Crowns For The ‘King Of Whisky’!

March 6, 2020 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Royal Salute The Time Series 52 Year Old Single Cask Finish

THE ROYAL SALUTE TIME SERIES 52 YEAR OLD SINGLE CASK FINISH

Inspired by the power of time, the limited edition Royal Salute The Time Series 52 Year Old Single Cask Finish is the finest addition to any collector’s repertoire.

At over half a century old, each decade has refined the whisky, enriching it in another unique quality to create this timeless classic.

With only 106 bottles available, at a price tag of $30,000 a bottle, this luxury and exceptional Scotch has been expertly crafted by Royal Salute Master Blender Sandy Hyslop, using some of the oldest and most valuable whiskies in the Royal Salute collection.

A true collector’s item, the all new expression is housed in a hand-blown Dartington Crystal decanter engraved with a unique number, sitting in a stunning box featuring five layers of wood, each representing a decade of the blend.

The Time Series 52 Year Old is a single cask finish blend with remarkable character that’s flawlessly balanced with a creamy sweet finish. The liquid is intensely fruity on the nose, with notes of ripe plum, toffee red apples and dark chocolate covered hazelnuts.

The taste is enhanced with flavours of sweet orange marmalade with a hint of ginger and scented cloves intermingled with soft ripe pears in syrup and a tantalising touch of liquorice. Out of the 52 years of slow and patient maturation, the last 14 were spent in a single cask, which gave the whisky a soft and creamy texture.

This exceptional 52 Year Old blend demonstrates the value of enduring patience over many years. At over half a century old, each decade has refined the whisky, enriching it in another unique quality to create this timeless classic.

It’s a personal privilege to create such an outstanding whisky for Royal Salute. The longer the whisky matures, the more intricate it becomes and with 52 years of ageing, the delicate balance of some of the rarest of our whiskies, has created an unrivalled depth of flavour and unbelievably complex characteristic, making for a remarkable expression that perfectly shows that time is a key element of our creations.
– Sandy Hyslop: Royal Salute Master Blender

The Treasured Blend

ROYAL SALUTE 25 YEAR OLD ‘THE TREASURED BLEND’

The first 25 Year Old expression in the Royal Salute portfolio, The Treasured Blend has been created by Master Blender Sandy Hyslop and has been inspired by the Crown Jewels of England, bringing together precious and powerful whiskies first laid down a quarter of a century ago, today fit for modern royalty.

It follows the recent release of The Malts Blend and The Lost Blend, which joined The Signature Blend as permanent additions to the 21 Year Old portfolio in July 2019.

Royal Salute was first created as a gift for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and has since been the official partner of all ceremonial royal gun salutes fired at the Tower of London, also home to and custodians of the Royal Regalia, or Crown Jewels.

In a similar vein to the Tower of London, a British icon home to the Crown Jewels that’s very dear to our hearts, the Royal Salute Vaults in Speyside protects a rare collection of some of our most precious casks.

It’s these ‘treasures’ of exceptional whisky that have been patiently matured for more than 25 years and expertly crafted to make The Treasured Blend, an exceptional whisky with an unmatched depth of flavour that only time allows.
– Sandy Hyslop: Royal Salute Master Blender

The Treasured Blend imparts a decadent sweetness with hints of spices and notes of stewed fruit, treacle, toffee and dark chocolate that culminate in an exceptionally long, dry and slightly spicy finish.
The whisky is housed in Royal Salute’s signature porcelain flagon, enhanced with sophisticated gold detailing and a sapphire jewelled stopper that is reminiscent of the precious stones set within the Imperial State Crown. Each flagon is individually numbered, cementing this latest ‘treasure’ as a true collector’s item.

The Treasured Blend packaging is itself worthy of exhibition within the Tower of London, featuring a stunning illustration from Royal Salute collaborator and fine artist Kristjana S. Williams that is revealed when the double doors are opened. It depicts the animals of the Royal Menagerie attending a coronation celebration surrounded by the precious Royal Regalia at the Tower of London. The playful take on the esteemed royal history nods to the colourful, fantastical new direction the Scotch whisky is taking.

The 25 Year Old Treasured Blend continues Royal Salute’s legacy of distinction for elegantly crafted Scotch whisky. This is a true treasure
to discover. Every detail is exquisite; from the precious and powerful liquid itself, to the beautifully crafted porcelain flagon and the luxurious material and intricate design.

We’re thrilled to continue our celebration of British Royalty with this exceptional new whisky that pays tribute to our esteemed heritage while pushing the boundaries of cutting-edge Scotch whisky innovation.
– Mathieu Deslandes: Royal Salute Marketing Director

June 14, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

Royal Salute 28 Year Old Kew Palace Edition

The ‘King of Whisky’, Royal Salute, has unveiled the exceptional new Royal Salute 28 Year Old Kew Palace Edition, the latest in its annual Flask Collection. The rich, round and silky blend is the result of an exciting, first-time collaboration between Royal Salute’s Director of Blending, Sandy Hyslop, and esteemed perfumer Barnabé Fillion, and is inspired by the magnificent Kew Palace and its iconic Kitchen Garden.

Combining Hyslop’s unparalleled knowledge of Scotch whisky with Fillion’s inimitable artistic acumen, the 28 Year Old Kew Palace Edition balances Royal Salute’s signature style with super rich fruits, scented flora like violet and aromatic leaves from the Kitchen Garden, resulting in the ultimate sensory experience that pushes the boundaries of modern blending.

The collaboration saw Hyslop lay the foundations of the new blend before uniting with Fillion to create a bespoke whisky top dressing that embodied the iconic Kitchen Garden of Kew Palace. The two worked together, nosing countless whiskies in Hyslop’s blending room in Scotland, to capture their interpretation of the lush flora of the Kitchen Garden, while staying true to Royal Salute’s signature style.

It follows the launch of the Royal Salute 30 Year Old Flask Edition last year, and this next iteration in the collector’s series again offers a disruptive take on traditional British drinking traditions. The perfect companion for whisky aficionados on the move, the set includes a bespoke green porcelain flagon and exquisite flask, alongside a pouring funnel and wooden serving tray.

The new expression pays homage to London’s iconic Kew Palace, one of Historic Royal Palace’s most charming royal buildings, as part of Royal Salute’s longstanding support of the charity charged with conserving some of Britain’s royal palaces for future generations. The Palace and its famed Kitchen Garden are showcased on the stunning packaging through artwork from esteemed British illustrator, Jason Brooks.

We are thrilled to unveil this exceptional 28 Year Old whisky, made even more special by the coming together of two industry experts. Sandy Hyslop is the absolute pinnacle when it comes to blending so to be able to further enhance his latest creation with some magic from long-time friend of the brand and famed perfumer, Barnabe Fillion, is really special – and the result, the whisky, speaks for itself.

We’re proud to continue supporting our charity partner, Historic Royal Palaces, with a limited edition inspired by Kew Palace. The charity does amazing work preserving and protecting historic royal buildings to keep their story alive for generations to come, and as a brand steeped in royal heritage, Royal Salute is thrilled to play its part honouring a true British icon in this unique and special way.
– Mathieu Deslandes: Royal Salute Marketing Director

May 16, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

Royal Salute Royal Wedding Edition

Royal Salute has launched its exquisite Royal Wedding Edition – a true collector’s item in tribute to the upcoming nuptials of HRH Prince Henry of Wales and Ms Meghan Markle.

Continuing Royal Salute’s long legacy of celebrating British royal milestones, just 70 bottles of this outstanding and extremely rare whisky have been created, with each housed in an elegant Dartington Crystal decanter.

The Royal Salute Royal Wedding Edition is available at an RRP of $10,000

This whisky has been carefully crafted by Royal Salute Master Blender, Sandy Hyslop, who has brought together some of the oldest and rarest whiskies from the Royal Salute collection to create an exclusive expression like no other. In honour of the bride’s heritage, this unique blend has been fully matured in 100% American oak casks – a first for Royal Salute – resulting in a long and creamy finish.

This exceptional unveiling is not only a tribute to the royal couple, but also a celebration of Royal Salute’s long-standing tradition of commemorating momentous British royal occasions. With an impressive portfolio that includes The Diamond Tribute and 32 Year Old Union of the Crowns, the Royal Wedding Edition is in esteemed company.

The marriage of HRH, Prince Henry of Wales, to Ms Meghan Markle, will be one of the most exciting events this century.

Since its creation in 1953 in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s coronation, Royal Salute has enjoyed a long and proud heritage of celebrating historic British royal events – and we believe this remarkable new blend is a perfect tribute to such a special moment in history.
– His Grace The Duke of Argyll: Royal Salute Brand Ambassador

The Royal Wedding Edition is fittingly housed within a striking Dartington Crystal decanter engraved with a unique number and displayed in a hand-crafted American Oak box. The decanter is further enhanced with delicate images of roses, thistles and barley, while the inside of the box is adorned with flowers and foliage in a subtle nod to Harry and Meghan’s spring nuptials. Images of vivid daffodils celebrate Harry’s title as Prince Henry of Wales and California poppies feature in tribute to Meghan’s birth place of Los Angeles.

The Royal Salute Royal Wedding Edition presents an incredibly sweet nose with notes of luxurious vanilla ice cream and soft chocolate fudge, followed by mandarin orange and a dusting of spicy cinnamon. Whisky aficionados fortunate enough to sample this stunning blend will discover a rich, fruity, and incredibly well-balanced taste, with flavours of ripe tropical banana and juicy charred pineapple. The luscious syrupy texture rolls into a hint of almonds and indulgent dark chocolate ginger sweets. Its distinctive flavour is complemented by an incredibly long and sweet finish with creamy vanilla in abundance.

It was a pleasure to create such a special whisky for HRH Prince Harry and Ms Meghan Markle. By marrying together some of the oldest and rarest whiskies in our portfolio, and aging them in American Oak casks, I have created a harmonious blend to match the coming together of such an iconic couple.

– Peter Moore: Global Prestige Brand Director at Chivas Brothers

I have a simple motivation each time I start a new project: I want to challenge the status quo. That’s why I was so inspired by Royal Salute – while all other whisky brands are content with glass, Royal Salute houses its whisky in precious porcelain.

I wanted to apply the same attitude to a flask and create something that is beautiful while also turning tradition on its head. Ceramics has a rich history and this project presented a really interesting contrast of ancient techniques crafted for a modern audience.

Royal Salute 32 Year Old Union of the Crowns Unveiled

September 22, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

Royal Salute 32 Year Old

Royal Salute 32 Year Old

Royal Salute, the exceptionally crafted and aged Scotch whisky, has unveiled Royal Salute 32 Year Old Union of the Crowns, a new exquisite blend that unites precious single malt and grain whiskies aged for a minimum of 32 years. Celebrating the creation of the modern British Monarchy, which is the source of the brand’s inspiration and values, the expression will appeal to aficionados looking for a rare whisky experience and will be available exclusively through global travel retail.

Royal Salute 32 Year Old Union of the Crowns will be available from September 2016

Royal Salute 32 Year Old Union of the Crowns will be available from September 2016

Royal Salute 32 Year Old Union of the Crowns pays tribute to the events of 1603, when King James VI fused three mighty kingdoms to create the modern British Monarchy. Reflecting the significance of this historical event, the rare single malts in Royal Salute 32 Year Old Union of the Crowns also show the power of unity, combining precious whiskies to create an incredible experience that can boast to be greater than the sum of its parts.

Exceptional whiskies aged for over 32 years have been hand-selected from some of the best distilleries in Scotland, such as: Longmorn with its creamy texture; the characteristically fruity Glen Keith; the sweetness of Tormore and the richness of Braeval as well as long-since closed distilleries – Lochside and Caperdonich. With all of these elements combined the final expression offers a rich and fruity nose with flavours of soft caramel toffee, dark chocolate and orange with a touch of ginger cake.

Reflecting the rare liquid within, Royal Salute 32 Year Old Union of the Crowns is presented in an elegant porcelain flagon, made from the purest clay, water and tempered fire. The flagon, which takes ten days to make at the hands of highly skilled craftsmen, is embossed with a distinguished hand-hammered silver plaque, while a black stone set on a silver crown tops the bottle. Each bottle is unique, with the glaze giving every flagon an individual patina, the result of a secret firing process. The story of the Union of the Crowns is brought elegantly to life through the flagon’s long neck, which is decorated with a rose, a thistle and a shamrock.

We are very pleased to present Royal Salute 32 Year Old Union of the Crowns, a truly precious blend of aged whiskies. This unique Scotch unites the timeless tradition of our skills and history with a contemporary understanding of the whisky experience preferred by today’s discerning spirits drinkers. The British Monarchy has been at the heart of the brand since its foundation in 1953 and, as a true representation of the exquisite craft of the Royal Salute blending team, we expect this new expression to become a sought-after collector’s item for international travellers.
– Peter Moore: Prestige Brand Director at Chivas Brothers

Royal Salute 32 Year Old Union of the Crowns will be available in global travel retail from September 2016 at an RRP of 380 USD or local equivalent.

Tasting notes:

Nose: Rich and fruity with notes of peaches in sweet syrup, soft caramel toffee, cinnamon and a hint of luxurious dark chocolate.
Taste: Full and exquisitely smooth, sweet orange flavours balanced with soft ripe pear and a hint of liquorice and ginger cake.
Finish: Long, sweet and smooth.

ROYAL SALUTE LAUNCHES THE ETERNAL RESERVE

September 11, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

ROYAL SALUTE LAUNCHES THE ETERNAL RESERVE

ROYAL SALUTE LAUNCHES THE ETERNAL RESERVE

Royal Salute is delighted to announce The Eternal Reserve, which uses an innovative blending technique to create an exceptional whisky that will literally live forever.

Royal Salute has selected rare and precious whiskies with an exceptionally long finish to blend and marry together in 88 casks to form the inaugural batch. Using a unique process called Circular Blending, Royal Salute has committed to including this original blend in each subsequent The Eternal Reserve release for decades to come.

Each time a new batch is unveiled, half of the blend will be re-casked in the Royal Salute Vault to conserve the precious liquid created in 2015. Thus, the original blend is forever preserved by this perpetual re-circulation – creating a smooth, voluptuous whisky that justifies its original name: uisge beatha (the water of life).

From the carefully crafted whisky, to the new porcelain flagon design, Royal Salute The Eternal Reserve is a dedication to the art of true craftsmanship. With distinctive features, the porcelain flagons have all been created with meaning to combine age-old techniques with a contemporary signature icon, which reflects the Circular Blending process.

Time is at the heart of Royal Salute – our youngest blend is 21 years old but the brand was born alongside a thoroughly modern monarch so we constantly blend tradition with the contemporary.

The Eternal Reserve is inspired by artists, writers, and philosophers – all dedicated to understanding the possibility of continuity in the modern world. This superb whisky is our suggestion that eternity doesn’t mean living forever. It means timelessness – and it belongs to those who live in the present.
– Vadim Grigorian: Royal Salute Global Brand Director

The first batch of 88 casks will be released in 2015 and sold exclusively in Global Travel Retail, supported by a digital and experiential promotional and merchandising campaign bringing the Royal Salute The Eternal Reserve story to life.

Royal Salute The Eternal Reserve will be available from September.

Circular Blending Process

Circular Blending Process

Circular Blending Process

The very first creation of Royal Salute The Eternal Reserve began with the preparation of 88 casks of incredibly rare and precious whiskies, all aged in their casks for over 21 years. These whiskies were carefully selected using two criteria: firstly, that each whisky possessed an exceptionally long finish that could be further extended through blending and marrying process and secondly, that the whiskies chosen could be beautifully harmonised in each new batch, while keeping the original signature style forever.

Once selected, the precious whiskies were blended together and then further married in 88 casks in the Royal Salute Vault for a period of six months. This original blend is then blended with other 88 casks worth of precious whisky of exceptionally aged whiskies to complete the first batch.

Before bottling this first batch, our expert blending team holds some of the blend back, returning it to the original 88 casks, so they can form the basis of the next batch. These 88 casks are always safeguarded in the Royal Salute Vault in Strathisla distillery. Each time a new batch is blended, the same process – circulation of 88 casks – is repeated; the whiskies of the 88 casks from the previous batch are added to the new blend of the next batch.

Tasting Notes

A dreamy sensation of ripeness is the first to arrive. Pears in syrup, honeycomb and creamy vanilla. An unmistakable promise of intense sweetness to come.

Like the changing of green to gold and the falling of the leaves, the burst of the rich sensuality of liquid honey, juice-laden oranges and tangy liquorice. Mellow, graceful and serene.
Time passes to reveal a beautiful and incredibly long lingering culmination.
Like the eternal cycle of nature. A finish that lasts and lasts; never-ending.

The Royal Salute Tweet Tasting – Celebrate History In The Dramming!

December 17, 2014 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Royal Salute Range Sampled

The Royal Salute Range Sampled

Last Monday saw me attend another Tweet Tasting, which was once again ably hosted by Steve from The Whisky Wire, and one which gave me the opportunity to sample one of the worlds premium whisky blends.

I’m talking, of course, about Royal Salute and I have to say, I feel very lucky to have been involved, these kind of tastings are rare indeed!

Royal Salute is produced by Chivas Brothers (and owned by Pernod Ricard). Founded in 1801 in Aberdeen, Scotland. The Royal Salute brand’s home is Strathisla Distillery at Keith, Moray in Speyside, Scotland. The full-bodied Strathisla is at the heart of every Royal Salute expression.

The range was launched on 2 June 1953 by Chivas Brothers in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II on the day of her coronation. Named after the traditional 21-gun salute, Royal Salute whisky is aged for a minimum of 21 years.

On the night we were lucky enough to have Master Blender Colin Scott tweet along with us, sharing his insights and knowledge of this amazing blend.

The whiskies sampled were:-

  • Royal Salute 21 Year Old
  • Royal Salute Diamond Tribute
  • Royal Salute 38 Year Old Stone of Destiny
  • Royal Salute 62 Gun Salute

If you want to catch up on what all the tasters had to say, you can view the tweets by searching for the hash tag #RoyalSaluteTT on Twitter.

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!

Tasting Notes – Royal Salute 21 Year Old ( 40% )

Nose: Sweet fruits, pears, apples and fresh oak. Lovely apple aromas! Toffee, caramel and vanilla.

Palate: Intensely sweet mixed with grapefruit. There’s a little bit of toffee in there as well as pineapple and pears.

Finish: Short, dry, spicy finish with hints of tobacco.

Overall: Undeniably smooth blend with some excellent fruit flavours. Quality abounds in this dram.

Tasting Notes – Royal Salute Diamond Tribute ( 40% )

Bottled in honour of Queen Elizabeth II 60th. Anniversary of her coronation.

Nose: Creamy and buttery. There’s a slight hint of fresh wood again as well as vanilla & caramel mixed with soft fruits.

Palate: Sweet cake mixture, raisins, vanilla – almost a little rum like in it’s flavour!

Finish: Smooth, short, dry finish. A little spice with the fruit makes it very enjoyable indeed.

Overall: I think this is softer than the original 21 year old. Morish? I’d say!

Tasting Notes – Royal Salute 38 Year Old Stone of Destiny ( 40% )

Crafted from whiskies aged for no less than 38 years, this unique blend shares its name with the Stone of Destiny, the Coronation stone of the ancient Scottish Kings.

For every bottle of the 38 Year Old Stone of Destiny that goes on sale, the ‘angels’ have already had four!

Nose: Stewed spicy fruits – earthy deep flavours of aged malts. Mint, chocolate, spice and all things nice!

Palate: Rich, plump, sweet Christmas cake with a hint of mint chocolate.

Finish: Gloriously spicy with rich sherry – tongue lingering!

Overall: This is a fine dram. You can taste the rich pedigree of whiskies that have gone into this blend. The balance of flavours is stunning!

Tasting Notes – Royal Salute 62 Gun Salute ( 43% )

Named after the firing of 62 cannons, an exclusive privilege of the Tower of London, and reserved only for the most special Royal anniversaries.

The whiskies contained within this blend are aged for at least 40 years.

Nose: This smells divine! Toffee and vanilla in old antique wood casks. Coffee, dark chocolate (the good stuff) abound. Even the colour looks classy!

Palate: Pear, pineapple and apple create a sweet fusion of flavours. Fresh sevile oranges and rich, deep sherryness topped off with a little bit of smoke complete this taste celebration.

Finish: Super smooth finish with a hint of spicy mint and orange.

Overall: This dram is truly an experience, deserving due respect and patience to savour it properly. You can literally taste the fine history of the drams that go into it’s creation. Outstanding!

Royal Salute 21 YO ruby

Royal Salute 21 YO ruby

Royal Salute, the world’s only exclusively prestige Scotch whisky has unveiled a contemporary new look for its 21 Year Old expression reinforcing its position as a modern, luxury product of hand crafted quality.

Royal Salute seeks out the most precious materials to craft its blend – from perfectly matured single malt whiskies to the porcelain flagons in which it is presented. Robust, durable and strong, the opaque body of the flagon acts as a powerful guardian to the precious liquid. Crafted over five days from Cornish clay in Great Britain, Royal Salute’s high quality is further reinforced by the new artistic decoration on its cap that includes a guilloché pattern, while the label emphasises the brand’s legacy, which dates back to 1953 when Royal Salute was launched in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II on the day of her coronation.

Elaborate engraving of a lion and cannon smoke on the bottle retain Royal Salute’s rich heritage as a powerful and sophisticated prestige Scotch whisky, with the expression being named after the traditional 21 Gun Salute. In 2012, the brand became the first ever to be officially associated with the Royal Gun Salutes at the Tower of London, further celebrating the brand’s celebration of royalty, a tradition that continues today.

Royal Salute 21 Year Old’s new bottle reflects the power and grace of Master Distiller Colin Scott’s craftsmanship. Colin Scott maintains consistent high quality throughout the production process, selecting rare and prized malt and grain whiskies laid down over 21 years ago for the final blend, which he describes as both subtle and strong, like “an iron fist in a velvet glove.”

Global Brand Director for Royal Salute, Neil Macdonald says: “There is a tremendous opportunity for Royal Salute to become a true and legitimate luxury brand. We have powerful credentials with our sumptuous whisky which has always used whiskies aged at least 21 years of age Now the new design complements with a modern look for our iconic 21 Year Old expression that alludes to the power and grace of our range. Royal Salute is steeped in royalty and history and this new contemporary packaging helps us bring the legacy of our crafted whisky to life. We are proud to present a bottle that today’s whisky connoisseurs, collectors and discerning drinkers alike will appreciate.”

Colin Scott, Master Blender for Royal Salute, continues: “21 years is an age necessary to capture the power and grace that defines this unique blend’s style. The new packaging enhances the exclusive Royal Salute experience.”

The new Royal Salute 21 Year Old flagon will remain available in three colours, including sapphire, ruby, and emerald complemented by a matching velvet pouch.
