The following notes are our own from a pre release tasting. This is a fantastic dram to enjoy after dinner, add a drop of water to pull the whole range of flavours if you can't wait for it to open in the glass for 20 mins (Who would want to wait that long).
Nose: Ahh there it is sweet orange chocolate and red berries with a rather stunning sweet aromatic smoke.
Palate: Nice mouth coating full of flavour. Could this be an alternative to my personal favourite 15 year old? Yes it could! The smoke is subtle to start with hints of dark fruit and that coca note from the nose. Lingering fruity notes with a nice play of peat smoke but not overdone. The sherry casks have delivered some amazing flavours with the almost tropical soft fruits from the Bourbon casks adding a little soft spice to the mix.
Finish: A long rich finish just as expected from the nose and the middle palate. Some orange marmalade on fresh baked wholemeal bread with hints of coconut and spice that lift the ending just that little longer than expected.

Passport Whisky Takes Millennials ‘To A New World’!

February 18, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

Your Passport to a new World - Brazil

Your Passport to a new World – Brazil

Passport, the No.1 Scotch whisky in Angola, and No.2 standard Scotch whisky in Mexico and Brazil has unveiled an innovative new above-the-line campaign designed to build on the brand’s recent success. Passport grew +20% in net sales to reach a record 1.7m cases last year as it continues to consolidate its relevance among young adults in emerging markets.

Playing on the brand’s name, Your Passport to a new world, captures the free spirited, colourful and approachable personality of the blended Scotch in TV and out of home formats. The campaign was recently introduced in Angola and will be released in Mexico later this year. Passport is also being supported by advertising in Brazil, the world’s fifth market for Scotch whisky by volume.

In the TV advertisement, a group of millennial friends are taken on a journey. Beginning in a home setting, the camera reveals the group in increasingly aspirational bars and ending in a nightclub. Use of social media among the target audience is brought to life in the creative, with the friends taking and sharing photos of themselves in the different locations.

Strong appeal for the brand among millennials in emerging markets has earned it the position as the fastest growing of all spirits brands that sell more than 200,000 cases per year.

Passport is currently a fantastic success story for Scotch and is leading the way in introducing new consumers in emerging markets to the unique vibrancy, quality, craftsmanship and heritage that the category offers.

The ‘Your Passport to a new world’ campaign is set to unlock the curiosity of young people in Angola, Brazil and Mexico; millennials in these regions have an increasingly global outlook on life and are using social media and drinking quality international spirits such as Passport to demonstrate their personalities and aspirations. We are extremely proud of the success that Passport has achieved to date and are excited to see how the campaign helps to further spread the word on Scotch whisky around the world.

Redbreast Releases Their First Ever Single Cask!

February 17, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

REDBREAST All Sherry

REDBREAST All Sherry

Redbreast, the most decorated Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey in the world, has unveiled its first ever single barrel offering, Redbreast Single Cask. Available globally from this month, the expression reinforces Irish Distillers’ commitment to rejuvenating the quintessential Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey style.

Redbreast Single Cask offers a unique take on Redbreast’s full bodied flavour profile, renowned for its signature Christmas cake character – the result of a strong contribution from Oloroso sherry casks. With just 576 bottles available exclusively through The Whisky Exchange at the recommend selling price of £180, the rare expression is expected to become highly sought after by Irish Whiskey connoisseurs and collectors.

Barrel #30087, the butt that matured Redbreast Single Cask, was crafted in late 1996 at the Antonio Paez Lobato Cooperage in Southern Spain near Jerez, the world’s sherry capital. The cask was then toasted and seasoned with Oloroso sherry for two years at the Páez Morilla Bodega until early 1999, when the cask was shipped to the Midleton Distillery in County Cork, filled with Single Pot Still Irish distillate and laid in warehouse M15A until August 2015 – 16 years and 147 days later.

Only a handful of single casks are selected and bottled at Midleton each year, a process that is overseen by Head Blender Billy Leightonwho takes pride in individually nosing each cask to make sure it is at the peak of maturation. Each single cask possesses its own unique flavour character that is inimitable; Redbreast Single Cask #30087 is bottled without chill filtration at 59.9% ABV and offers classic pot still spices with fruit and almond notes, a hint of vanilla and a balanced finish. Cask #30087 was selected by Leighton and The Whisky Exchange team from a choice of two Redbreast single barrel samples in March 2015.

The latest Midleton Single Pot Still single cask release, Cask #48735, is available alongside Redbreast Single Cask exclusively through The Whisky Exchange at the RRP of £245. Crafted in the true Midleton style of ex-Bourbon cask maturation, the individual American oak barrel was laid down in early 1991 and has yielded just 186 bottles at 55.2% ABV. This highly collectable bottling offers typical aromatic notes of oil and spices, a palate of ripe fruits and a rich succulent finish.

Redbreast Irish Whiskey holds a special place in the hearts of Irish Whiskey fans, due to its full-flavoured taste profile and its iconic history as the definitive Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey. Being able to introduce the world to Redbreast Single Cask is very exciting, as it celebrates the heart of what connoisseurs love about the brand; its exceptional ex-Sherry cask contribution, our relationship with the Spanish bodegas and respect for the craftsmanship throughout the production process. Cask #30087 offers a unique tasting experience, with rich notes of dried fruit, a velvety smooth coffee and vanilla taste with a balanced finish that can never be reproduced, so I hope Irish Whiskey fans will enjoy savouring each sip of this newest addition to the Redbreast family.
– Billy Leighton: Head Blender at the Midleton Distillery

The premiumisation and diversification of Irish Whiskey is one of the category’s most exciting trends as it shows great potential for continued growth, particularly in the super-premium and above sector. We are proud to have led the revival of Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey and will continue to raise awareness of this quintessential style, and Irish Whiskey in general, to educate whiskey fans about the breadth and quality that the category has to offer.

Following the great success last year for Redbreast Mano a Lámh, which is now sold out, we are confident that Redbreast Single Cask offers a new and interesting interpretation and experience that will quench the thirst for innovation and choice in whiskey among Redbreast fans, Irish Whiskey drinkers and spirits aficionados alike. We are committed to whiskey innovation and look forward to more new releases for whiskey fans to enjoy over the coming year.
– Brendan Buckley: Global Innovation & Whiskey Portfolio Director at Irish Distillers

Regarded as the definitive expression of traditional Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey, Redbreast dates back to 1903 when Jameson entered into an agreement with the Gilbeys Wines & Spirits Import Company to supply them with new make spirit from their Bow St. Distillery for maturation under bond.

This exceptional cask is bursting with Balblair distillery character and in our opinion strikes excellent balance between the signature notes and its unique characteristics developed during fifteen years of maturation.
Lead by fresh and fruity aromas of green apples, oranges, lemons and peardrops, the nose develops rich notes of vanilla, toffee and hints of leather.
There is maturity and energy here, a true delight. On the palate there are concentrated fruity notes, with spice, vanilla and toffee. The long finish flickers from spices to honey sweetness.
John MacDonald, Balblair Distillery Manager has a short message for you: We are thrilled to be doing an exclusive bottling especially for you, the valued members of our mailing list whom we know appreciate not only the finer things in life, but also exclusivity.
Single casks allow whisky lovers to experience individual and unique whiskies that taste like no other in the world. Like all Balblair expressions, the Vintage 2000 displays natural colour, is non-chill filtered and has an ABV content of 57.9%.
We are confident Balbair fans will enjoy it and recognise the familiar vibrancy they have come to expect of our world class whisky range.”

February 16, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

Four Roses needs you!

Four Roses needs you!

Spirit Cartel, the relentless hunter of the handcrafted and offbeat, is on a quest to find a UK Brand Ambassador for the iconic bourbon brand, Four Roses. The brand is seeking a whiskey whiz kid to be the heart and soul of Four Roses in the UK.

Seeking a whiskey whiz kid to be the heart and soul of Four Roses in the UK

Seeking a whiskey whiz kid to be the heart and soul of Four Roses in the UK

This is a highly desirable career-defining opportunity that no bourbon enthusiast will want to miss. We want a grain guru who eats, sleeps and breathes Four Roses, one of the most exciting Bourbons in the UK today. Oh and they must be able to mix a mean drink and spin a yarn!

The Brand Ambassador will be an integral part of our Four Roses campaign in 2016 and beyond, building momentum for a brand that is rich in heritage and provenance. It’s a fantastic chance to put in to play your spirits knowledge, marketing flair and business acumen on one of the spirit world’s truly great names.
– Charles Marshall: Spirit Cartel Consiglieri

WHO DO WE WANT?

The charismatic candidate will epitomise Four Roses’ style and elegance; prepared to challenge the preconceived norm – a leader not a follower. A sour mash sage with flair and a thorough understanding of the bar industry, excellent trade relationships and the ability to engage the drinks fraternity with Four Roses.

Only Four Roses handcrafts 10 distinct and extraordinary bourbon recipes, mingling them by hand to create a family of award-winning brands. Artistry such as this is how the brand survived Prohibition, The Great Depression, Two World Wars, and 40 years of exile from the US, to be named American Whisky Distiller of the Year in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2015 by Whisky Magazine.

THE PRIZE

Eat, Drink, Sleep bourbon – What’s not to like?!
A contract to work with the winning combination of Spirit Cartel and Four Roses with a competitive salary.
An unforgettable trip to the Four Roses Distillery in Kentucky as a guest then to host all future UK trips.

THE COMPETITION

Submit your CV and up to 300 words explaining why you would be suitable for the role, by the 28th March, to entries@fourroses.co.uk.
Five finalists will then be selected by Spirit Cartel and invited to final auditions in London on the 18th April. Candidates will present their case, take part in a Four Roses quiz and demonstrate their cocktail skills.
The appointment of the Four Roses UK Brand Ambassador will be announced on the 5th April and the successful candidate will be the face of the brand in the UK, effective immediately.

Jameson’s Fifth St. Patrick’s Day Bottle Marks Launch of Global Celebrations!

February 11, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

Jameson LEB

Jameson LEB

Jameson has unveiled its fifth limited edition bottle ahead of its St. Patrick’s Day 2016 celebrations. Created by Dublin street artist, James Earley, the bottle is designed to mark Jameson’s #BeOriginal celebrations launching in Dublin and around the world this March.

The bottle is designed to mark Jameson’s #BeOriginal celebrations

The bottle is designed to mark Jameson’s #BeOriginal celebrations

Earley’s design is inspired by the bridges crossing the River Liffey, the backbone of Dublin. His design reflects how these physical structures represent the soul of modern Dublin by linking together spaces, people and ideas. Taking key aspects from great Irish bridges including the Grattan, Sean O’Casey and Samuel Beckett, Earley demonstrates his passion for the Irish capital through intricate details such as the Atlantis and Anna Livia visual icons. Alongside the visual interpretations, Earley uses the slogan “Dublin, our city”, reinforcing the welcoming atmosphere of the city.

The bottle is supported by the Jameson #BeOriginal social media campaign, which is running in 12 markets in the lead up to and throughout March. Jameson fans are encouraged to share their original and authentic St. Patrick’s celebrations on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for a chance to win a trip to Dublin for St. Patrick’s Day 2017.

The Jameson #BeOriginal campaign culminates in a three-day celebration in Dublin around St. Patrick’s Day hosted by Jameson in its spiritual home city. Bringing to life the sights, sounds and provenance of Dublin in a modern way, the festivities include: a journey through underground Dublin from a local’s perspective; a walking tour of James Earley’s art, led by Earley himself; and the Bow Street Sessions 2016 gig, featuring internationally-known talent including Kodaline, Little Hours and July Talk.

Jameson’s St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations have always been authentic and personal and the #BeOriginal campaign continues this long tradition. Our limited edition bottle represents the best of what it means to be Irish – to be part of a lighthearted, confident and inclusive family – an ideal enthusiastically embraced by John Jameson himself. We look forward to welcoming the winners of the #BeOriginal campaign to Dublin next year!

Bruichladdich / Micro Provenance Cask #007 Ribera Del Duero 2004
Bruichladdich / Micro Provenance Cask #007 Ribera Del Duero 2004

£ 90.00
Country: Scotland
Region: Islay
Age:
Strength: 63.6%

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Islay. ABV: 63.6% Bottles Produced: 303 DISTILLED IN 2004, BOTTLED IN 2015. THIS SINGLE CASK FROM WAREHOUSE 11 CONTAINS BRUICHLADDICH SPIRIT MATURED FULL TERM FOR TEN YEARS IN EUROPEAN OAK THAT PREVIOUSLY HELD WINE FROM THE DUERO VALLEY, ONE OF SPAIN'S DENOMINACIÓN DE ORIGEN ON THE NORTHERN PLATEAU. The Micro Provenance series is unique to Bruichladdich and is conceived as an exploration into cask evolution, each individually picked by master distiller Jim McEwan to explore the fine nuances of the Bruichladdich whisky and the effects of warehousing, oak, cask and micro-climate on maturing spirit. Character: It is rich, warm and potent, strong but not aggressive. Roundly texture and packed with flavour. The viscosity is like syrup; the house style of Bruichladdich. Colour: Dazzling tangerine marmalade. Nose: The bouquet speaks of most succulent fruits you can imagine; cantaloupe melon, peach, apricot, plump ripe red grapes with a hint of dark plums surrounded by freshly picked mint, primrose, orange and lemon peel in the warmth of a midsummers day. Embracing the fruit in the vanilla basket is the sweetness of the toasted barley and of course mellow oak sugars from the casks. Palate: The malty, oak flavours give a biscuit creamy citrus buttery flavour to the spirit with tastes of honey and toffee. They provide the traditional flavours of Bruichladdich. It’s a gorgeous complex creation which lies on the tongue like morning dew on a pasture. As the spirit warms, the fruit notes emerge on the warmth of the palate more evident than on the nose. It’s nirvana on the tongue. The combination completely won me over. Finish: There is strength and finesse, elegant and full of latent power, oodles of succulent fruit and mellow tannins that hold the structure beautifully in harmony. Mood: The warmth of Spain and the wildness of Islay together as one. A captivating experience.

Summary: Country/Region: Scotland/Islay. Unit: 70cl ABV: 52.1% Bottles Produced: 296 DISTILLED IN 1992, BOTTLED IN 2015. THIS SINGLE CASK FROM WAREHOUSE 12 CONTAINS BRUICHLADDICH SPIRIT THAT HAS MATURED IN CASKS OF EUROPEAN OAK FROM ONE OF THE GREAT WINEMAKERS FROM POMEROL. Character: Absolutely sublime. The viscosity is just so succulent and velvety it’s extraordinary. You can feel the texture generously enveloping the entire palate. Colour: Gorgeous amber/golden russet/deep chestnut. Nose: Opens on the sweetness of the American oak. Brown sugar, oak tannins with a twist of cinnamon and a hint of aniseed and liquorice all from the Bourbon casks. This is followed by melon, pear, green apple and gooseberry. Add a little water and the notes from La Fleur rise serenely popping like champagne bubbles onto the olfactory senses, succulent plump grapes, pomegranate, raspberry, red currant, it’s an incredible experience. Add to that the marine freshness and the mellowness of the oak, its seductive, its super smooth, as disarming a bouquet as there is in the world of single malt. Palate: Wow the change is amazing. Now it’s the red fruits from the wine casks that caress the palate smooth and seductive follow by the freshness of the green fruit. The salty tang from Islay maturation can be detected. It’s like a light sea mist gently caressing the taste buds and lifting and melting the various flavours into a single taste of such harmony that I believe it’s one of the most enjoyable whiskies I have tasted from a single cask. Finish: An utterly sensational non peated Islay malt that delivers the Bruichladdich message with a style that no other Islay spirits possess. Amazing. Mood: Indulgent.

It arouses the senses into a state of expectancy and it delivers. Colour: Stunning! Honey, amber orange with hot copper highlights. Nose: It opens on sweet oak and hot mashed barley which is balanced by a brilliant combination of zesty citrus fruits and the floral notes of wild flowers and plants growing on the cliffs and coastline of our storm lashed coast. Throughout the nosing, the distinctive aromas of the Atlantic Ocean and sandy beaches are underpinning the olfactory orchestra. Close your eyes and breath in gently for a while and you will be transported to Islay. It’s an experience few have experienced – now you can! Palate: After some 10 minutes, the soft fruits created by slow distillation rise serenely, coated with a dash of honey and lemon, and then add a twist of spiced cinnamon with vanilla syrup, pear and melon. Now you are in the Zone. Finish: Long and rich. Mood: It’s a brilliant young Laddie packed with passion and pride. Free of additives and immune from marketing make-believe. It shows humility and highlights the skills of forefathers. I love it.
