First Single Malt Whisky To Be Distilled In London For Over 100 years – And It’s All Sold Out!

January 29, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

The London Distillery Company 109 Cask Edition

Independent craft distiller, The London Distillery Company, has released The London Distillery Company 109 Cask Edition, – the first single malt whisky to be distilled in the city for more than 100 years!

The 109 individual casks were snapped up within hours of being laid down!

Cask strengthed at 63.5%, The London Distillery Company 109 Cask Edition was laid down on the 9th September 2015 and rested for three years in 20-litre American oak – ex-Kings County Bourbon – barrels.

The whisky was double-distilled using 100% premium Plummage Archer malt and 1920s Distiller and Whitbread B yeast.

Whisky investment is booming and English whiskies are attracting increased attention from around the globe, particularly from Asian markets. We’re delighted to have produced another London first for whisky.
– Killian O’Sullivan: CEO, TLDC

The London Distillery Company 109 Cask Edition boasts a mango and brioche aroma, with raspberry jam and candied orange notes following. On the palate it offers intriguing, natural taste tones of heavy wood spice.

The 109 individual casks were snapped up within hours of being laid down.

Following its inaugural The London Distillery Company Rye Whiskey LV-1767 Edition release late last year, the release of TLDC’s Single Malt sees the Distillery steal another first for the UK whisky category.

Prior to The London Distillery Company re-opening in 2011, the last whisky to have been distilled in London is said to have been by the former Lea Valley Distillery, which closed circa 1903.

The London Distillery Company is an independent craft distilling business based on the ‘Beer Mile’ near Tower Bridge, TLDC was originally founded in 1807 and re-established in 2011.

The London Distillery Company’s portfolio includes world class Soil Association approved organic spirits, reflecting the company’s strong emphasis on environmental values, which are at the core of its products and methods. These include IWSC award winning Dodd’s Gin and Kew Organic Gin (in association with The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew).

STRENGTH: 45% Vol.

Unleash the bold spirit of Jim Beam® Devil’s Cut®, a premium bourbon with depth and complexity that comes from liquid extracted from inside the barrel wood.

All great bourbons have a magic to them, an element of mystery. As bourbon ages and matures, a portion is lost from the barrel due to evaporation. Many believe it’s angels claiming their dues; that’s why we call it the “Angel’s Share”—gone forever.

After ageing, when the bourbon is dumped out of the barrel, some liquid stays trapped deep inside the wood. This is the “Devil’s Cut.” Jim Beam have made history by extracting it.

They use a proprietary process that extracts the rich bourbon trapped inside the barrel wood. When ready, they then blend this liquid with extra-aged bourbon and bottle it at 90 proof (45% vol.) for robust, premium bourbon with deep colour, aroma and character.

TASTING NOTES: Deep amber colour Strong oak character on the nose with a hint of sweet vanilla and caramel. Full bodied with intense oak and vanilla notes, finishes long and smooth with a hint of sweetness.

TASTING NOTES: An intense yet smooth taste featuring caramel, toffee and a distinctive spiced oakiness.

As the leader of the Bottled-in-Bond category, Heaven Hill is proud to offer a premium, allocated product within this special class that showcases the authenticity and quality of the American Whiskey portfolio. Acquired in 1999 by Heaven Hill, the legendary Old Fitzgerald line is well-known for its distilling pedigree and intriguing story behind its namesake, John E. Fitzgerald. Comprised of barrels produced from February through May of 2006, and bottled in April of 2018, the first release ushers in the latest hallmark series to the Bottled-in-Bond legacy.

Inspired by an original 1950’s Old Fitzgerald diamond decanter, the newest packaging will thrill collectors as the brand was traditionally bottled in artistic decanters of all shapes and sizes. The label features the time-honored graphic of a key, commemorating an important element in original labels and the brand’s slogan since the 1940’s, “Your key to hospitality.” Kentucky’s state seal and a prominent brand banner replicate a pre-Prohibition label. Spring editions will be denoted with a green label and fall editions with a black label. The age will change with each edition and will also be indicated on the bottom of the label.

Each edition’s tax strip, which has always been a signature of transparency on bottled-in-bond products, will disclose when the liquid was produced and bottled.

“For 82 years Heaven Hill Distillery has nurtured and produced historic brands of quality and heritage,” said Heaven Hill Distillery Master Distiller Denny Potter. “It is an honor to join a famous line of distillers behind the Old Fitzgerald name and to continue to uphold the tradition of the brand through its bottled-in-bond designation, which dates to the early 1900s.”

Larceny Bourbon, a descendant of the Old Fitzgerald line, tells the legend of Treasury Agent John E. Fitzgerald who held the keys to the bonded rickhouses, and helped himself from barrels containing only the finest bourbon. The agent’s selections became known around the distillery as “Fitzgerald barrels” and were used to create a soft, wheated bourbon known as “Old Fitzgerald.”

LABEL: Rickhouse GG – Floor 3 – Rick 129

The 2017 edition showcases what Parker felt was one of his greatest achievements throughout his more than 50 years of distilling experience – the introduction of Heaven Hill’s single barrel Bourbons. Aged in Parker’s favourite rickhouse location, Deatsville, the sixth-generation Master Distiller would have described these bottles as “just good Bourbon.” Bottled at 122 proof (61% abv) and non-chill filtered, the Bourbon tastes of heavy spice and oak, with a hint of smoke and raisin, followed by a long and dry finish.

The annual release of Parker’s signature line is one of the most highly anticipated bottling's for whiskey and Bourbon lovers worldwide, as the collection produces an innovative, coveted product each year and now serves as a remembrance of the collection’s namesake. Parker’s Heritage Collection was originally conceived to showcase the extraordinary quality and broad range of Heaven Hill’s American Whiskey holdings, as Heaven Hill boasts the world’s second largest inventory of ageing American Whiskey.

NOSE: one of those noses so delicate you daren't breath in too hard for fear of shattering it into a million pieces. The citrus, a kind of orange blossom honey thinned with juices of Jaffa, is of the cleanest style imaginable; likewise the barley is fresh and gristy. One of the most ethereal and elegant noses of all time;

TASTE: perfection. This is faultless. This is exactly how whisky should be. A delivery you hope to encounter or create – but suspect you probably never will. And here it is: in all its understated, genteel, feminine, seductive majesty. It is the nose all over again, but this time in liquid form, a physicality which curls against our taste buds and caresses them with the most erotic, arousing finger tip choice;

FINISH: nothing can quite follow the delivery and follow through, but it tries. Though the oaks can now be heard, a little bitterly by comparison, while the spices up the tingling factor;

BALANCE: by no means the first time I have encountered a single malt and grain in the same bottle. But I am hard pressed to remember one that was even close to being this wonderful…This is Compass Box's finest moment.

ABV: 48% Vol.

Matured in a combination of the finest Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks for a minimum of 21 years, the ‘Parliament’ continues the great GlenDronach tradition of offering fruit-laden intensity in its single malts. This rich expression has been named ‘Parliament’ after the colony, or ‘parliament’, of rooks that have been nesting in the trees that overlook the GlenDronach distillery for almost 200 years.

APPEARANCE: Deep amber with a cherry wood sheen.

NOSE: A delicate mix of ripe autumnal fruits – notably blackberries and red plums. Rich Oloroso sherry and candied orange segments. Spiced oatmeal biscuits and toasted oak fragrances bring excellent weight and balance.

NOSE: one of those noses so delicate you daren't breath in too hard for fear of shattering it into a million pieces. The citrus, a kind of orange blossom honey thinned with juices of Jaffa, is of the cleanest style imaginable; likewise the barley is fresh and gristy. One of the most ethereal and elegant noses of all time;

TASTE: perfection. This is faultless. This is exactly how whisky should be. A delivery you hope to encounter or create – but suspect you probably never will. And here it is: in all its understated, genteel, feminine, seductive majesty. It is the nose all over again, but this time in liquid form, a physicality which curls against our taste buds and caresses them with the most erotic, arousing finger tip choice;

FINISH: nothing can quite follow the delivery and follow through, but it tries. Though the oaks can now be heard, a little bitterly by comparison, while the spices up the tingling factor;

BALANCE: by no means the first time I have encountered a single malt and grain in the same bottle. But I am hard pressed to remember one that was even close to being this wonderful…This is Compass Box's finest moment.
