“Icons Of Gin” Online Retailer Award Goes To Master Of Malt For Second Time!

February 22, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

Master of Malt has scooped the Icons of Gin Online Retailer of the Year award for the second time

Master of Malt has scooped the Icons of Gin Online Retailer of the Year award for the second time, cementing its position as the leading drinks supplier for all things juniper.

Voted for my members of the UK drinks trade and announced at the World Gin Awards in London last night, the accolade rewards excellence in product assortment, customer service, and user experience.

In 2018, Master of Malt became the first to win the Icons of Gin Online Retailer of the Year Award, a move which underscored the platform’s commitment to providing the best possible online shopping environment for all categories, not just whisky.

We love gin here at Master of Malt, so we were over the moon to receive one of the highest honours in the gin world, Online Retailer of the Year at The Icons of Gin Awards.

It was great to see so many of our favourite brands and people honoured at the awards ceremony in London.
– Henry Jeffreys: Master of Malt features editor

Paragraph Publishing, the company behind Whisky Magazine, launched quarterly title Gin Magazine in 2017, and the accompanying Icons of Gin Awards last year.

The Icons of Gin Online Retailer of the Year award confirms a stellar start to 2019 for Master of Malt, which was also named Online Retailer of the Year at the recent Drinks Retailing Awards.

We’re thrilled that Master of Malt has been recognised for excellence in drinks retailing not once but twice already in 2019.

The whole team here works hard all year round to bring our customers the best possible drinks experiences, whether that’s gin, whisky, or something else delicious.

We’re beyond delighted to take home the Icons of Gin trophy, and the Drinks Retailing Award. It’s the best start to the year possible!

Master Of Malt Shares Key Trends & Insights On The Future Of Drinks & Drinks Retailing

February 20, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

Master of Malt shares its insights on the future of drinks and drinks retailing.

Multi-award-winning online drinks retailer Master of Malt has unveiled its key trends for 2019 and beyond, from disruptive ecommerce developments to the fastest-growing spirits categories.

This is the first time Master of Malt has issued a trends report. After bolstering its internal analytics and PR teams, the retailer is now able to provide bespoke in-depth category and trend reports to members of the press.

eCommerce

The Master of Malt team has identified three key eCommerce trends set to disrupt the online drinks retailing space for 2019, 2020 and beyond.

Voice search, personalisation and meaningful content are three key drivers already shaking up the online commerce space, and the retailer believes over the next 12-to-18 months they will come to the fore in drinks.

The drinks sector as a whole is notoriously behind when it comes to eCommerce. There are all kinds of reasons for this, from regulatory challenges to a historical lack of consumer acceptance.

What we’re seeing now is a game of catch-up. Consumers are completely used to shopping for grocery online, and the lines are blurring between social, content and eCommerce.

Customers also now expect a tailored experience when shopping online, a retail space that is now a natural habitat. Drinks retailers will increasingly need to take this seriously as shopping for beverages online catches up.

When it comes to voice search and shopping, others are already disrupting the marketplace. As customers get accustomed to speaking rather than typing commands, drinks players need to step up.

At-home speaker systems are becoming commonplace, and more and more people are using these devices to shop for grocery,” Sherry continued. “Drinks shopping is a next logical step, and it’s something we will be looking at in due course.

Ultimately, it’s all about providing customers with the best drinks experience possible, and that starts way before the bottle arrives in their hands.
– Kristiane Sherry: Master of Malt editor

This is the first time Master of Malt has issued a trends report.

Drinks trends for 2019 and beyond

In addition to highlighting three major shopping trends, Master of Malt has also shared its own data on the fastest growing and most popular drinks categories.

From February 2018 to February 2019, the fastest-growing categories in volume terms across Master of Malt trade and retail were syrups (+78.6% year-on-year), vermouth (+75%), mead (+64%), sake (+59%) and rum (+56%).

None of the categories grew from a particularly small base (with rum in particular ranking as one of Master of Malt’s top-selling drinks), and demonstrate the strength in cocktail-related sales. Bars account for 41% of Master of Malt’s trade accounts, and adventurous consumers are increasingly willing to try their hands at at-home mixing.

Beyond rum, none of these are what you’d call a ‘main-steam’ category, and so to see such impressive sales growth is not only testament to some of the new products and initiatives driving these categories forward, but also to the willingness of consumers to try new things.

There’s now absolutely no reason that customers can’t get their hands on the same top-quality liquids as professional bartenders, and we’re seeing this in the purchasing decisions that our customers are making.

The biggest-selling spirits categories for Master of Malt Retail in the last 12 months were whisky, gin, liqueurs, rum and vodka.

In whisky, single malt sales were up 16% year-on-year, while American whiskeys soared by 26%. English whisky, a relatively new category, is gaining traction, with sales up by 24%.

There’s strong interest coming through for new Scotch whisky distilleries.

Looking forward, we’re expecting to see increased momentum behind Irish distilleries as more of their own liquid comes on-stream. There will be further innovation to come in Scotch, from new and existing distilleries alike, and we’ll certainly see more crossover between whisky and entertainment – for example, like we saw with Diageo’s Game of Thrones collaboration with HBO.

Gin remains a significant category for Master of Malt, recording a 41% volume increase year-on-year. Flavoured gins and gin liqueurs are dominating, especially violet and rhubarb variants. While UK-produced gins hold the largest share, Japanese and American gins are growing rapidly, with sales up 27%.

Gin is a democratic category – a brand doesn’t need to be owned by a large company for it to do well.

For the remainder of 2019 and into 2020, we expect largely more of the same. Gin has not waned, and we don’t expect it to any time soon. ‘Local’ is a significant purchase driver for gins, and we expect this, and the importance of gin liqueurs, to continue to be key themes. I also think we’ll see more expressions released in the Japanese gin category.

Rum is emerging as an alternative to premium whisky, with unique, limited expressions in the £50+ bracket proving increasingly popular.

Spiced or flavoured ‘rums’ soared over the past year, with volume sales climbing 53%. UK-produced and UK-blended rums grew at 46%, perhaps overlapping with the consumer interest in local gins.

Rum is an increasingly interesting category for us, and while we’ve seen significant growth, this hasn’t been across the board,” Hodcroft said. “I think this means we’re seeing pockets of opportunity emerge – particularly for a premium spiced rum, retailing at £40+.

We’ve also seen a gap emerge for good, unaged rums. At present only 4% of our top-sellers are unaged or ‘white’ rums. Looking ahead, I expect to see further interest at the premium end of the market, along with UK-produced rums. Spiced rum is only at the beginning of its growth trajectory; expect more diverse flavours to come through.

Master of Malt has seen the liqueurs category climb 53% year-on-year, largely due to the extraordinary growth in gin liqueurs. Whisky liqueurs are suffering slightly, however, due to the global demand for whisky. Coffee and herbal liqueurs are performing well.

I predict even more sweet, gin-based liqueurs to come on to the market in 2019-2020, especially those made in a ‘sweet shop’ style. Contrastingly, I also expect to see growth in drier, mixable liqueurs – Amaro styles are also set to increase.

While vodka at large suffers from competition from gin and is largely flat, Master of Malt has seen its category sales climb 36% year-on-year.

While flavours remain important, ‘straight’ vodka is performing best, with a significant trend narrative concerning base materials and countries of origin. Big brands continue to dominate sales.

While our vodka category is faring better than the wider market, I do expect challenging competition from gin and gin liqueurs to start to take effect in 2019.

– Guy Hodcroft: Master of Malt’s head buyer

Low- and no-alcohol spirits, Tequila, mezcal and vermouth are four other ‘trending’ categories where Master of Malt expects to see further significant growth in 2019/2020.

MoMer’s Web Page Gin – Master of Malt’s Very Own Bottling!

February 20, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

MoMer’s Web Page Gin!

Master of Malt has released its debut exclusive gin bottling: MoMer’s Web Page Gin!

The light-hearted front illustration references notable features and events from Master of Malt’s story to date

This tasty expression is the result of a partnership with That Boutique-y Gin Company, and celebrates the retailer’s pioneering and storied history.

Taking inspiration for its name and label design from an iconic episode of everyone’s favourite cartoon family, as well as today’s online culture of memes, gifs and stickers, the light-hearted front illustration references notable features and events from Master of Malt’s story to date.

From the directors’ journey from a garden shed to the shiny new MoM Towers, and the mischievous Colobus monkey that occasionally appears on the site, to the award-winning #WhiskySanta, our digital team gathering virtual reality footage, and even that Land Rover incident (if you know, you know), That Boutique-y Gin Company’s design spans an action-packed decade of Master of Malt.

Augmented reality

Master of Malt is as much a technology company as a drinks purveyor, and MoMer’s Web Page Gin celebrates the inventive side of the business, too. Through the Zappar augmented reality app, gin fans can use their mobiles to see the label come to life and unlock exclusive video content.

After downloading the app, customers simply aim their phone at the Zapcode on the neck tag of the bottle (which also provides simple, clear instructions), line up their phone with the label, and watch the illustration come to animated life! Naturally, the animated elements of the label can also be found and used as stickers in Instagram Stories or on Snapchat. Just search for MoMer’s Gin!

Through the AR platform, gin lovers can also discover exclusive videos, including recommended serve walkthroughs and an interview with Stuart Medcalf, liquid production manager at That Boutique-y Gin Company, who details how MoMer’s Web Page Gin was made.

MoMersZappar

The gin

The MoMer’s Web Page liquid itself is a twist on a classic dry-style gin. Basil, thyme and rosemary were distilled separately under vacuum before being expertly blended with a more traditional pot-distilled base.

The result is a distinct, warming and rich gin, with the basil, thyme and rosemary botanicals contributing an unusual aromatic lift throughout without ever overpowering the all-important juniper.

That Boutique-y Gin Company brand ambassador Stephanie DiCamillo has developed two signature serves which celebrate the basil, thyme and rosemary trio, and are simple enough to be recreated by gin lovers at home. It also makes a great G&T (in case you were worried).

MoMer’s Web Page Gin really sums up what Master of Malt is all about – we want to bring amazing drinks experiences to life, so exclusively developing a delicious gin and pairing it with augmented reality is the only logical thing we could do.

To be able to celebrate the last 10 years of Master of Malt with a whole array of firsts – incredible liquid, tech, and a whole lot of reminiscing with the team – was genuinely exciting, and we’re thrilled to release the results to the world!
– Kristiane Sherry: Master of Malt editor

MoMers cocktail – All the Muck That_s Fit to Shake!

It’s fantastic to share cocktail videos, additional info and more tongue-in-cheek label-based absurdity in such a fun and playful way with all those who have the bottle in their hand (and a mobile device in the other!)
– Jake Mountain: Master of Malt campaign manager

The first batch of MoMer’s Web Page Gin is limited to 660 bottles and is available exclusively from Master of Malt now, priced at £29.95.

MoMer’s Web Page Gin suggested serves:

MoMer’s Gin & Coconut Water

Add the gin and tea, and shake hard with ice
Strain into an ice-filled tumbler and garnish with a basil leaf

It's literally that Christmassy. A long finish, with strident tannins and bracing wood against the fruit. Lots of citrus and orange peel at the end.

Second Batch Of Jameson Bow Street 18 Years Cask Strength Unveiled!

February 14, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

The latest batch of Jameson Bow Street 18 Years Cask Strength has been unveiled!

Jameson Irish Whiskey, produced by Irish Distillers in Midleton Distillery, has announced that a second batch of Jameson Bow Street 18 Years Cask Strength will be available from August 2019. The only cask strength Jameson to be available globally, the expression finishes its maturation in Dublin’s only live Maturation House in the Jameson Distillery Bow Street – celebrating Jameson’s Dublin heritage by returning a part of the production process to its original home in Smithfield.

Distilled and matured at the Midleton Distillery, Co. Cork, Jameson Bow Street 18 Years Cask Strength is the head of the Jameson family. After spending 18 years in a collection of bourbon and sherry casks, the blend of pot still and grain Irish whiskeys has been married together and re-casked in first-fill ex-bourbon American oak barrels for a final six to 12 months in the Maturation House at the Jameson Distillery Bow Street.

‘Marrying’ is a traditional method of re-casking batches of vatted whiskey and re-warehousing it to ensure infusion before bottling. The second batch is presented at 55.1% ABV without the use of chill filtration and will be available in 20 markets from August 2019 at the RRP of €240.

I’ve long had the unique luxury of being able to taste Jameson straight from the barrel at cask strength. With Jameson Bow Street 18 Years Cask Strength, I’m thrilled that Irish whiskey fans around the world can experience the full intensity of our whiskey or add a few drops of water to enjoy it at their own preferred strength.

As a tribute to the Jameson distilling legacy in Smithfield, we’ve introduced some methods that would have been employed in days past. The final maturation period in Bow Street is our nod to the traditional “marrying” method. We’ve put our own Jameson stamp on it by using first-fill bourbon barrels, whereas the traditional approach would be to use casks multiple times. I like to think of the whiskey getting engaged in Midleton and then “married” in Dublin!
– Billy Leighton: Master Blender at Midleton Distillery

While Jameson’s approachability has been key to its success, we had an opportunity with the launch of Jameson Bow Street 18 Years Cask Strength last year to reinforce the more serious whiskey side of the brand’s heritage. Consumers are looking for increased choice in style and quality in Irish whiskey and Jameson, as the category leader, is committed to satisfying this appetite.

On top of that, our research shows that consumers are increasingly looking for brand experiences and the reaction that we have had from consumers that have been able to experience the sounds, aroma and aura of a functioning maturation room in the heart of Dublin has been phenomenal. Our doors are open and we look forward to welcoming even more whiskey fans to taste a piece of whiskey history.
– Simon Fay: International Marketing Director at Irish Distillers

Jameson Bow Street 18 Years Cask Strength is presented in a premium bottle design that truly reflects the quality and rarity of the liquid within. The bottle features 18 facets, one for each year of maturation, and the wooden presentation box celebrates the traditional pot stills used during the production process. In addition, a unique copper coin located underneath Jameson Bow Street 18 Years Cask Strength bottles provides Jameson fans with access to an exclusive online portal where they can delve deeper into the story of the whiskey which bears the Bow Street name.

Tasting notes by Billy Leighton, Master Blender at the Midleton Distillery:

Nose: Rich wood-driven influence with deep toffee notes and spice.
Taste: Toffee and oak remain consistent with hints of leather and vanilla along with a subtle sherry nuttiness creating depth and complexity.
Finish: Long and full with the sweet toffee notes slowly fading while the toasted oak and spice linger throughout until the very end.

The Balvenie Single Barrel First Fill is a 12 year old single malt whisky, aged in a first fill, ex-bourbon cask. Almost all Scotch whisky is matured in casks previously used by Bourbon distillers. When brought to Scotland and used for the very first time they are known as ‘First Fill’.

The Malt Master samples the aged whisky, cask by cask and selects only those characterised by sweetness and subtle vanilla oak to be bottled as The Balvenie Single Barrel First Fill.

A series of “limited editions” – Each bottle is one of no more than 300 drawn from a single cask and each is hand-numbered and carries the number of the cask in which it matured

The Balvenie Single Barrel Traditional Oak is characterised by subtle spices and rich honeyed sweetness. Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE only selects casks of whisky for bottling that have the character he expects of Balvenie matured for 25 years exclusively in American oak.

However, no two casks will ever produce an identical single malt. As such, this 25 year old single malt whisky from a Single Barrel Traditional Oak Aged is unique and no more than 300 bottles will be filled from any one cask. This is reflected on the bottle label – hand numbered and carrying the distillation date, bottling date and cask number in which the Scotch whisky was matured.
