Six Bars To Tell The Bold Story Of Powers Whiskey & Its Dublin History!

December 21, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

Six bars collaborate to tell the bold story of Powers and its Dublin history

Powers Irish Whiskey, which is made by Irish Distillers in Midleton Distillery, has unveiled the Powers Quarter; a collaboration between six Dublin bars that each tell a different chapter of Powers’ Bold Character and its illustrious Dublin whiskey history since 1791.

The six bars lie within walking distance of the old John’s Lane distillery and original Powers bottling hall on Drury Street. The initiative aims to celebrate the historic Powers neighbourhood by bringing to life the bars’ historic links to the brand through Powers-educated bartenders, point-of-sale and signature serves inspired by the unique story of Powers. The Powers Quarter covers the following key Dublin accounts; Thomas House, Market Bar, The Oak, The Swan, Idlewild and John Fallons The Capstan Bar.

The Powers Quarter is supported by social media, PR and a dedicated website on which whiskey fans can a download map and take a virtual tour. The journey is free to participate in for Irish whiskey fans and will also be used by Powers for educational visits with the trade, bartenders and distributors from around the world and within the Pernod Ricard network. There’s also an option to do a guided tour with the Powers global ambassador, Michael Carr, for €60.

For generations, the Powers distillery at John’s Lane shaped the development of the area around it through the direct employment of families, provision of houses for workers and even the maintenance of the local streets. While Powers went on to become a global success story over the past two hundred years, its heart always remained in Dublin and its public houses over the years.

In fact, Powers’ founder, James Powers, was a publican himself and his pub on John’s Lane stayed within the family until the closure of the distillery in the 1970s, so it only seems right that we honour the legacy of Powers and bring more of its Dublin history to light through six bars and put Powers firmly back on the whiskey map of Dublin. Across the Powers Quarter, Irish whiskey connoisseurs and casual fans alike can enjoy a sip back in time and learn about the true character of the Powers family as purveyors of Irish whiskey – and with whiskey tourism in Dublin booming to almost 400,000 visitors last year, we are confident that the Powers Quarter will enchant a whole new generation of whiskey fans.
– Carol Quinn: Archivist at Irish Distillers

Glen Moray Launches Edinburgh Rugby Single Cask Private Edition Whisky!

December 14, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

Endorsing the strong relationship between Glen Moray Single Malt Whisky and Edinburgh Rugby, Glen Moray is releasing the exclusive Edinburgh Rugby Single Cask Private Edition Whisky in time for Christmas.

Pictured (L-R): Pierre Schoeman and Cameron Fenton

Edinburgh Rugby teammates John Barclay, Scotland Rugby Captain and Damien Hoyland, visited the Glen Moray Distillery in Elgin, Speyside and hand-picked the casks that were used to produce the limited edition run of 312 individually numbered bottles. Glen Moray will be contributing 100% of the profits of the sale of the limited edition bottles to the rugby charity, Hearts and Balls.

Bottled from 2004 non-chill filtered Chardonnay Cask finish single malt, the whisky is 52.8% AbV and is a fitting example of how double maturation can bring out the best of both the wine and the whisky flavours.

As you would expect from two talented and dedicated rugby players, John and Damien threw themselves wholeheartedly into the cask selection process.

It was never going to be easy for a Flanker and a Winger to agree on anything but we persevered, and after several attempts, we agreed on a wonderful 2004 Glen Moray finished in a Chardonnay wine cask.
– Graham Coull: Glen Moray Master Distiller

The Hearts & Balls Charitable Trust is a Scottish charity which exists to support rugby players and their families in the aftermath of injury on the field. Glen Moray has chosen Hearts & Balls, as the work the charity does with players who have been injured through rugby is life changing and helps to ensure players retain a love for the game.

Rugby and whisky have had a long and fruitful association and as such we are very excited about this new Edinburgh Rugby whisky from Glen Moray. It is fantastic to see Glen Moray working to support Hearts & Balls, one of our official charity partners and we are fully behind this new venture.

I am sure our fans will support this very worthy cause.
– Ben Slater: Edinburgh Rugby’s Head of Commercial

The Borders Distillery Tweet Tasting – Four Great Styles To Sweeten Your Christmas!

December 13, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Borders Distillery range of drinks

Monday nights @TweetTastings, the last one for this year, which was once again ably hosted by Steve from The Whisky Wire, gave us the opportunity to sample Borders Distillery range of drinks.

Based in Hawick, Borders Distillery, which was commissioned in March 2018, is the first Scotch whisky distillery in the Scottish Borders since 1837. Tours are available where you can see their carefully renovated buildings and learn about their distilling process!

On the night the styles sampled were:-

  • Borders Distillery New Make Spirit
  • Borders Distillery William Kerr’s Gin
  • Borders Distillery Small Batch Vodka
  • Borders Distillery Lower East Side Whisky

If you want to catch up on what all the tweet tasters had to say you can view the tweets by searching for the hash tag #BordersDistillery on Twitter.

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes … and the one which was my favourite on the night!

Tasting Notes – Borders Distillery New Make Spirit (63.5%)

Available exclusively from the Borders Distillery shop for £39.95. Made entirely from Borders barley (concerto). The production uses two spirit and two wash pot stills for its spirit/whisky production which were made by Forsyths in Scotland.

Nose: Creamy vanilla and popcorn, moist cereal, apples and a hint of rum.

Palate: very sweet – almost icing sugarary with that familiar new make popcorn taste to accompany it! H2O opens up to some apples and fiery pepper – dry finish.

Overall: A pleasant new make really – compared to some new makes I’ve tried – I enjoyed it!

Tasting Notes – Borders Distillery William Kerr’s Gin (43%)

William Kerr’s Borders Gin – available from Borders Distillery is a “barley to bottle gin” They use their own malted barley spirit for re-distillation through its unique recipe of botanicals in its specially commissioned one-shot vapour Carter-Head still.

The botanicals used are: Macedonian Juniper, English Coriander, Scottish Heracleum, Bitter Orange, Sweet Orange, Lemon, Cassia, Angelica, Myrtle, Angelica, Orris, Almond and Liquorice.

Nose: Sweet grapefruit and lemons – very citrusy! Getting hints of licquorice.

Palate: Lovely and sweet with orange, grapefruit, lemon and tasty licquorice following on after – very smooth!

Overall: A great gin, one that is sweeter than some of the others out there. It would make a great cocktail base!

Tasting Notes – Borders Distillery Small Batch Vodka (40%)

Available exclusively from the Borders Distillery shop for £29.95. Made entirely from Borders Barley (concerto) in single batches, with active charcoal in the botanical baskets, using a one shot vapour system in their specially build Carter Head Still.

Nose: Very similar to the new make spirit …. strong creamy cereal nose with some rum hints.

Palate: Sweet, light, smooth with citrus elements and zesty pepper – very nice sweetness lingers like icing sugar dissolved in water for a glaze. Dry grapefruit at the end

Overall: Not your usual vodka this one – it actually has flavour and isn’t all fire – a tasty vodka indeed!

Tasting Notes – Borders Distillery Lower East Side Whisky (40%)

A Blended Malt Scotch Whisky – Available from Borders Distillery for a RRP of £32.99. The first blended whisky from Borders which is a lightly peated marriage of Highland and Lowland single malt whiskies. Designed to be an all-rounder; to be sipped straight-up, on the rocks or as a cocktail base.

Nose: Sugar rich, green apples with vanilla and honey cereal and a little light peat.

Palate: Sweet and sugary and smokey and peaty – a little of each – all rolled into one! Green apples but no real spice to discern.

Overall: A pleasant whisky, either as a sipper or used in a cocktail.

My Favourite On The Night

Although it’s not really fair to choose a favourite as each style is a different thing but out of the 4, I think it’s got to be the Borders Distillery Lower East Side Whisky – very easy going and sippable – a higher abv may have made it even better!

Many thanks to Steve at The Whisky Wire (@thewhiskywire) for a great evening and Borders Distillery (@BordersDstlry) for sending the samples and without whom!

Thanks to Borders for sending the samples!

Jura Releases New Prestige Range!

December 11, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

Jura 1988 and Jura 28 Year Old

To mark the end of a monumental year for Jura Single Malt Whisky, the brand has revealed the first in the development of a new Prestige Range, showcasing some old and rare stocks from Jura’s whisky making history.

Jura 28 Year Old will be available in duty free retailers globally from late December 2018

In March 2018, Jura Single Malt Whisky made waves with the unveiling of a full rebrand and re-launch for the brand globally. Featuring a new house style which for the first time brought together sweet and smoky flavours in each expression; the malt whisky maker revealed ten new and unique whiskies available across two new permanent ranges for the domestic and travel retail markets, as well as an innovative new bottle and carton design.

The new range of rare and aged expressions aims to continue the fantastic response the brand has received from whisky fans all around the world since its re-launch and further explore the brand’s new house style. Launching with the Rare Vintage Jura 1988 created to capture unique moments from the whisky’s island home; the first expression in the new range will be available in select domestic markets globally. Meanwhile in travel retail an aged Jura 28 Year Old will be available in limited quantities annually.

Rare Vintage Jura 1988

Jura 1988 is an extraordinary single malt, true to the full depth and character of Jura’s house style. The 30-year-old malt whisky has been matured in small batch Bourbon barrels and finished in 20-Year-Old Tawny Port Pipes, for a sweet and subtly smoky drinking experience.

Crafted through time and patience, the aged single malt has been cared for by three devoted distillery managers, with a collective 90+ years’ service at Jura to date. Beginning its life in 1988 under the watchful eye of then Distillery Manager, Willie Tait laid down the precious cask awaiting its future reveal. Tenderly watched over by Tait until 2005, when long term distillery worker turned Distillery Manager, Willie Cochrane, took over its safe-keeping. Following Cochrane, the cask was guarded by the now Distillery Manager, Graham Logan, who took to the helm in 2016. As a result, this incredible bottling is a true labour of love and sure to reveal many tales from the island’s home.

Jura Rare Vintage 1988 is first matured in American White Oak small batch ex-Bourbon barrels, delivering a sweetness that features delicate flavours of honey, vanilla, lemon cake, baked apple and a touch of peat. The spirit is then enhanced by several years of maturation in the finest hand-selected 20-Year-Old Tawny Port Pipes, sourced from the Symington Family Estates, lending notes of black forest fruits and coffee on the nose and red berries and liquorice to taste.

There are only 1406 bottles of this release (53.5% ABV – Cask Strength), which is natural colour and non-chill filtered, and delivers a whisky experience that is as close as you can get to tasting straight from the cask. This is the first in a number of vintage releases from the brand.

Jura 28

Jura 28 Year Old, a new permanent expression, will be available annually in limited quantities in global travel retail. This super aged malt whisky embodies the ingenuity of Jura’s whisky makers through the years.

This characterful single malt is matured in freshly emptied American White Oak, ex-Bourbon barrels and sits patiently for many years, protected from the island elements. It develops a sweetness with a touch of peat, before being finished in aged Amoroso sherry butts, revealing a deep aroma and flavour, with notes of lemon and vanilla on the nose and coffee, almond and fruit to taste.

Bottled at 47% ABV, non-chill filtered and natural colour, this release is available as a travel retail exclusive with an RSP of £399. The bottle is packaged in an eye-catching display case, making it a welcome addition for collectors and whisky fans alike.

As an island, Jura has been dedicated to producing the finest whiskies by generations past and present and we are in an exceptionally privileged position to have a range of rare and aged stocks.

Both our new expressions are a fitting way to celebrate and share our island’s incredible heritage of whisky making with our growing, global community.
– Gregg Glass: Whisky Maker & Blender

Jura Rare Vintage 1988 is now available in select domestic markets globally, RSP £650.

Jura 28 Year Old will be available in duty free retailers globally from late December 2018, including select World Duty Free ‘World of Whiskies’ stores, RSP £399.

With over 200 different cask types maturing in their warehouses, the cask exploration series showcases the influence of wood on heavily peated spirit. Bottled at 59.2% alcohol and in limited numbers, we introduce the Port Charlotte MRC:01 2010. Distilled from 100% Scottish barley, from the Invernesshire region, this sweet and fruity spirit has spent time in first fill American whiskey casks and second fill French wine casks. These component parts have been combined and matured for an extra year in the finest French oak from the Bordeaux left bank.

NOSE: Initially you are met with a summer fruit and peat smoke extravaganza! Raspberry and cherry, with Turkish delight and smoky driftwood embers burst from the glass jostling for attention. There is a distinctly summer feel to this dram, no brooding peat monster it has a light, bright and fruity air. As the whisky opens you find the Islay sea breeze, ozone and salty. The oak, both American and French give real depth to the dram, classic vanilla, toasted bread, chocolate, roasted coffee beans, liquorice walnut and almond. Each time you go back to the glass there seems to be a bubble of red berry and ripe plum bursting under your nose.

PALATE: Certainly warming at 59.2%, lively and sweet with icing sugar and marshmallow, bound in smoke. There is a rush to capture all that is taking place. Sweet red fruit and peat smoke melt away slightly as the power of the oak comes through with tobacco leaf and toasted oak. Maple syrup, pecan and coffee are complimented by hints of orange and cooked peach. There is a complexity here that didn’t seem possible on the first sip. As you go back to the glass that initial rush of flavour has become a more complete experience. Now there is salt spray, dry smoke and the oak is more prominent, raspberry and plum combine with vanilla and butterscotch.

FINISH: On the finish the peat smoke is a little more medicinal than normal, think bandages and creosote. A dryness from the oak tells of the toasting of the French and the char of the American and the final combination in premium French oak together. The influence of the extra maturation in sumptuous first growth casks has added a layer of fruit that weaves its way through the smoke and into the heart of the whisky. The spirit is viscous and textured allowing a long finish where creamy vanilla, spicy clove and ripe peach melt away from the powerful peat smoke allowing it to finish alone, leaving the Port Charlotte DNA firmly in place.

CHARACTER: Lively, sunny, rosy, a wonderful experience and superb combination of fruit laden French oak, strong peat smoke and Islay maturation.

The Islay barley series has always been a mission. For many years now they have sought to showcase the phenomenon of “terroir” in single malt whisky – the belief that soil, climate, micro-climate, geographic orientation, natural influences and local weather systems will influence the quality and flavour profile of the spirit, making it a unique expression of ‘place’. Bruichladdich Islay barley 2011 is distilled from barley grown on six western and central Islay farms in 2010.

CHARACTER: A sweet spot in the maturation of an incredible whisky. A chance to see the elements at work as the young spirit showing green fruits, apple, pear and gooseberry transitions to peach, apricot and mango with the influence of time. The careful selection of casks holds this moment perfectly in balance as their contribution to the ageing of the spirit brings oak depth, vanilla and coconut sweetness and lemon/grapefruit zest without overpowering the sweetness of the malt or the profound cereal notes that come from the Islay grown barley. The structure is firm, the texture luxurious, carrying the DNA of this island.

COLOUR: Fresh Cut Straw.

NOSE: From the outset this is overtly floral and fruity. Slow distillation yet again brings out the best from the Islay grown Barley, the abundance of soft fruit notes and delicate floral style of this dram is shared with our past Islay grown releases. Typical Bruichladdich style fruit notes of crisp apple and ripe pear along with peach and dried apricot are further enhanced with lemon drops, grapefruit and orange zest. There is a vast array of flavour rising from this whisky as it opens further. The oak and cereal components come through after the fruit, pipe tobacco and vanilla notes mingle with barley sugar and caramel wafers, as ever a distinct marine tang hangs in the air.

FINISH: The finish is about the fruit, dried apricot from the oak and lemon, kiwi and caramel wafer. A warm sand, marine note lingers as the Islay maturation tells its part of the story. As this whisky lingers on the palate it puts you in mind of the construction and structure to its form. Each element, distillation, time, cask and barley have a clear influence yet not one dominates another as this whisky reaches a crossroads in its development. This vintage is at the perfect stage to appreciate all that it is as it lays bare its DNA, its philosophy and its quality.

Jameson Distillery Bow St. Named World’s Leading Distillery Tour!

December 4, 2018 by Gary Leave a Comment

Jameson Bow St

Irish Distillers has today announced that Jameson Distillery Bow St. was named the World’s Leading Distillery Tour at the World Travel Awards Gala Ceremony in Lisbon on December 1st. The finalist list included Macallan, Hennessy, Jack Daniels and Jose Cuervo. The win follows the announcement of Jameson Distillery Bow Street as ‘Europe’s Leading Distillery Tour 2018’ at the European Travel Awards in July.

L-R: Greg Hughes, John Carroll and Ray Dempsey – Jameson Distillery Bow St

Jameson Distillery Bow St. reopened in March 2017 following an €11M refurbishment, with visitor numbers topping more than 350,000 in the first year making it the most-visited whiskey experience in the world. Bow St. draws on brand immersion and theatre to complement the iconic 230-year-old Dublin distillery creating a living, active space that engages guests in multi-sensorial experiences.

The World Travel Awards were established in 1993 to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry. The 25th World Travel Awards (WTA) Grand Final Gala Ceremony 2018 took place at Lisbon’s historic Pátio da Galé on 1st December 2018, with the leading decision-makers, figureheads and influencers of travel in attendance. The evening marked the climax of the WTA Grand Tour 2018 – an annual search for the finest travel and tourism organisations in the world, featuring the winners of WTA’s six regional ceremonies going head-to-head for the coveted World titles.

We are extremely humbled and honoured to be awarded this very special accolade. We embarked upon an ambitious renovation project in late 2016 and since we reopened the doors to Bow St. in March of 2017, the new-look Jameson Distillery experience has fast become the must-visit whiskey destination in the world.

We are proud that an experience in the heart of Smithfield that champions all that is great about Ireland and Irish whiskey has been commended on the world stage. This award is a fantastic recognition for the amazing team at Bow St. who provide each and every person that visits us with an unforgettable experience.
– Greg Hughes: Managing Director Jameson Brand Homes and Education at Irish Distillers

As well as being a highlight of Dublin’s tourism trail, the new look Jameson Distillery Bow St. in Smithfield is fast becoming the go-to place for locals to enjoy a Jameson. The distillery offers a range of interactive, fun and immersive experiences including the flagship distillery tour, a premium whiskey tasting experience, whiskey blending and cocktail making master classes – along with the opportunity to draw and taste whiskey straight from a cask. One of the city’s most unique event locations, Bow St. is also available for private use by evening.
