Sampling The Whisky Exchange Christmas Malt 2019 – More Fire Than A Flaming Xmas Pud!

November 20, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Whisky Exchange Christmas Malt 2019!

You can’t keep a good idea from being repeated! With that thewhiskyexchange.com have released their second Christmas Malt – called un-surprisingly – The Whisky Exchange Christmas Malt 2019!

Only 2696 bottles available!

Once again, Billy Abbott from The Whisky Exchange has penned a little Christmas ditty:-

Amid presents and family
And bright festive lights
A whisky that’s perfect
For long winter nights

So pour for yourself
And others invite
To all a good whisky
And all a good night

This is an exclusive Christmas Malt for 2019, distilled and bottled in Speyside, having matured for 10 years in ex-bourbon and sherry-casks, triggering the wonderful flavours of Christmas with a core of fruit and festive spice.

The Whisky Exchange has kindly sent me a sample to try (Thanks @WhiskyExchange!).

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – The Whisky Exchange Christmas Malt 2019 (54.2%)

Distilled at Linkwood distillery
Aged in bourbon and sherry casks for 10 years
2696 70cl bottles available
£56.95

Colour: Pale straw, crisp and clear.

Nose: Lovely whiffs of Sherry which get more intense as time passes. Banana, apples and white oak. Rich fruit cake and black treacle. Little wisps of orange and furniture polish.

Palate: Tingly, tongue-dancing sherbet sweetness. Rich Christmas cake and caramel. Creamy butterscotch, little Xmas tangerines (the kind you always get at Crimbo time!)

Finish: Peppery, chilli spice. Fiery – like a log fire – but don’t get too close!

The sweetness dampens the heat and stays right through the finish which is quite long.

Overall: The addition of water takes a lot of heat off producing a smoother, thinner dram.

Quite a handful this one, especially on Christmas day. Very morish so be careful how much you ‘sample’ or you might just burn the dinner – or maybe it won’t get cooked at all!

Merry (Early) Christmas!

Glen Moray Distillery Takes A Starring Role In ‘The Three Drinkers Do Scotch Whisky’!

November 19, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Three Drinkers

The team at Glen Moray Distillery in Speyside were delighted to welcome The Three Drinkers to film part of their second series at the Distillery earlier this year. Airing the 1st week of December on Amazon Prime TV, the series focuses on a journey of discovery through Scotland, exploring the world of whisky in an exciting new way, with the film crew paying a visit to the Glen Moray Distillery in Elgin, Speyside.

Amazon Prime’s Three Drinkers, Aidy Smith, Colin Hampden-White and Helena Nicklin are three friends who take an entertaining look at the Scotch Whisky industry.

The good news is that quality whisky doesn’t have to be super expensive. I often introduce non-whisky drinkers to the spirit with Glen Moray, who have a varied range and start from as little as £17 a bottle.

They make single malts from Speyside and are perfect for starting a whisky journey.
– Helena Nicklin: The Three Drinkers

Iain Allan, Glen Moray Global Brand Ambassador, hosted The Three Drinker’s visit to Glen Moray Distillery and welcomed the opportunity to share with them the passion that goes into the production of the varied collection of single malts. They also looked at the brand’s extensive investment in exploring ageing techniques, where a diverse range of casks are used for finishing which gives distinctive and unique flavours to the spirit.

This has been a unique opportunity for Glen Moray Distillery to show the world the amazing team behind the brand and the outstanding quality of the whisky created whilst helping to make malt whisky approachable to consumers who can find whisky complex and intimidating.

Glen Moray is a brand with a little bit of heart and soul in every bottle.
– Laure Habbouse: International Marketing Manager

The Glen Moray Classic Range

Glen Moray Distillery has been producing the finest Single Malt for over 120 years and uses the skills developed over generations of Master Distillers and a small team of dedicated craftsmen from the local community to develop their unique flavours through their deep knowledge of maturation and casks. Every bottle of Glen Moray tells a story – the story of how that whisky has been made and the people that have been involved.

Over the past year Glen Moray have launched the Glen Moray Elgin Curiosity Range which embraces the distilleries passion for experimentation and pushing boundaries in the world of whisky. Marketed as ‘The Gateway to Flavour’ the whiskies in the range are ‘bold with complex aromas and exciting flavours’.

The first launch was the small batch release of Glen Moray Cider Cask Project, which has sold out, and following on from its huge success the Glen Moray Rhum Agricole. The distillery has also added to the prestigious Elgin Heritage Collection with the Glen Moray Elgin Heritage 21 Year Old Portwood Cask Single Malt Whisky and launched Glen Moray Fired Oak Cask 10 Year Old Single Malt Whisky.

Pour your glass of Benromach 1975, cask number 2230, and prepare to enjoy this delicious whisky. First, appreciate the rich amber colour created by lingering for 43 years in a single Refill Sherry Hogshead as the whisky grew and matured in character. Enjoy the aromas without water… stewed apple, dried fruits and winter spices mingle with caramelised brown sugar and roasted nuts leading to rich dark chocolate with hints of beeswax polish, mature oak and orange citrus.

Now  take a sip. Creamy milk chocolate, intense Seville orange top notes and a hint of cracked black pepper on the tongue lead to stewed plum and red apple. Dried tobacco and charred oak notes come to the fore with a hint of smoke. Add a few drops of water and take time to enjoy the developing aromas… intense orange and lime citrus notes are followed by stewed red fruits with an undertone of warm ginger and slight aniseed edge. Take a sip. Vibrant citrus fruits mingle with smooth strawberry and cream followed by hints of liquorice and gentle traces of lingering smoke on the finish. Superb!

Sampling The Glen Moray 21 Year Old Portwood Finish – A Dram Of Two Halves – And Twice The Flavour!

November 15, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Glen Moray 21 Year Old Portwood Finish

I was lucky enough recently to be sent a sample of The Glen Moray 21 Year Old Portwood Finish – A Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky which is a new addition to Glen Moray’s Elgin Heritage Collection.

It is described as a finely tuned balance of American Oak and Port flavours. It’s smoothness being a great example of how the whisky and the Portugese port casks interact leading to a world of flavours after initial maturation in ex-bourbon casks.

The Glen Moray 21 Year Old Portwood Finish retails for approximately £125.00.

Once again, Many thanks to Glen Moray (@GlenMorayDist) for sending the sample!

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Glen Moray 21 Year Old Portwood Finish (46.3%)

Nose: Port, vanilla caramel and some fine plump raisins are present straight away. There’s some green apples with sweet orange and chocolate about midway. Much later on there’s furniture polish and some nice tropical nasalities!

Palate: Quite light in the mouth – there’s sweet port with vanilla, raisins and a little wood.

Finish: BIG spicy pepper hit – much bigger than I expected! Dry at the finish.

Overall: This is very much a dram of two definite halves – sweet fruits tempered by strong spice – I like!!

Add a little water and it’s beautifully thick and creamy. The Chocolate comes through big time and tastes great on the palate!

I would LOVE to try this at Cask strength – then maybe with a little water added – I think it would be dreamy!

Sampling The SMWS 58.31: “Berried Alive” – Berry Fruity As Well!

November 7, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

The SMWS 58.31: “Berried Alive”

It’s Month 5 of my regular samplings of The Scotch Malt Whisky Societies’ selection of recently released drams.

November’s dram-a-month, this month, is their SMWS 58.31 “Berried Alive”.

The 58.31 is a Speyside dram and of the original 244 bottles released – only a fifth remain to be sold – SMWS bottlings don’t hang around for long!

The SMWS (@SMWSUK) has very kindly sent me a sample to try – thanks SMWS!

So, what did I think?

Tasting Notes – SMWS 58.31 “Berried Alive” (59.1%)

A Speyside Dram (Strathisla Distillery) 12 years old, distilled on 30th. March 2006. Matured for 10 years in Ex-bourbon hogshead and then in 2nd. fill Chenin Blanc Barrique barrel for the remainder.
244 bottles were released.
(53 BOTTLES IN STOCK AT PRESENT!)

Nose: Creamy, fudgy, caramel with some fruity floweriness. There’s wisps of lemon in there as well.

Palate: Slightly tropical plus there is loads of fruity, plump raisins and vanilla sweetness – all contained in a slight creaminess.

Finish: Smooth finish with some medium spice, leather and a grapefruit dryness at the end. In fact there’s quite a lot of tannin there.

Overall: A nice dram though a bit dry for me at the finish which I struggled with. But then, I’m not a fan of very dry white wines either while my partner loves them!
As ever, horses for courses, but there’s no denying this is another quality SMWS whisky!

About The SMWS

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is a club unlike any other.

As well as being a place to connect with other like-minded whisky lovers, they are also internationally renowned for their mission: “to provide our members with an adventurous and fun journey of discovery of the world’s widest collection of single cask whiskies.”

Conceptualised in the late 70’s and established in 1983, the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, now 35 years old, has branches and partners bars in 19 countries globally. The Society has a selection of over 500 casks every year, each cask yielding a few hundred or less whisky bottles which are unique to that cask.

Rather than name their Whiskies after the distillery, the Society has a coding system. The Society also creates fantastic tasting notes summaries for their Whiskies and other bottles. The whiskies are straight from the cask single malt, undiluted, without chill-filtration or colouring at cask strength.

More recently the Society has been named Independent Bottler of the Year in Whisky Magazine’s prestigious Independent Bottlers’ Challenge (IBC) competition.

The rum-soaked cask infuses the aged whisky with a spicy warmth and indulgent vanilla and toffee sweetness, the character of the Caribbean shining through. This gives the whisky a sumptuous sweet intensity that is both rich and creamy yet still retains the unmistakable character of Glenfiddich.

Great for those expecting a very mature, traditional yet intriguing malt. Initially soft, then brisk, vibrant and drying. New leather and oak nose combine with complex sweet, smoky and subtle ginger flavours in this classic Glenfiddich.

BOTTLED: 2019

NUMBER OF BOTTLES: 3600

ABV: 46% Vol.

The Tomatin Decades II is rich and complex, having been matured in traditional Scotch whisky, ex-Bourbon, ex-Sherry and re-charred French oak casks hand selected from various vintages spanning the last fifty years. An initial burst of citrus fruits reveals flavours of freshly baked pastry, dried fruit and exotic spices before the long, waxy, tropical finish.

AROMA: An initial burst of citrus fruits gives way for hints of sweet pastry and wood shavings. Cooked fruits are balanced by softer floral and coconut tones. There is an overall sense of maturity with dried fruits, almonds and exotic spices adding real depth.

PALATE: Unctuous with Christmas cake, maple syrup and fresh red berries. In time tropical fruits emerge with orange peel and ginger.

FINISH: Long and waxy with tropical fruit, chocolate and spice.

1970s: REFILL BOURBON HOGSHEADS: DISTILLED ON 23/02/1973, 10/07/1975 AND 23/09/1977

Tomatin from the 1970’s is held in exceptionally high regard, prized for its depth and complexity. Matured in refill Hogsheads, this malt has taken on very little oak influence which has allowed the air and liquid in the casks to interact and develop a wide array of tropical fruit flavours.

1980s: FINISHED IN FIRST FILL OLOROSO SHERRY BUTTS: DISTILLED ON 02/12/1988

Tomatin from the 1980’s is sweet and fresh. This malt has been finished for over three years in 1st fill Oloroso Sherry Butts, resulting in a whisky reminiscent of aged Cognac. Tones of aged leather, polished oak and dark roast coffee along with flavours of stone fruit, dark chocolate and tannin add richness.

1990s: FIRST FILL BOURBON BARRELS: DISTILLED ON 04/10/1995

The use of 1st fill Bourbon Barrels has developed a malt with characteristics of golden syrup, freshly baked pastries with subtle spices and add a layer of warmth. Although well into its twenties, Tomatin from the 1990’s is bold which helps impart long length to the overall finish.

2000s: RECHARRED VERDEJO WINE BARRELS: DISTILLED ON 28/01/2000 AND 05/06/2009

From 2000 onwards Tomatin began to experiment with a wider variety of casks. The malt used from the 2000’s has been matured in Verdejo Wine casks which have been re-charred to harness the full influence of the French oak. This adds sweetness as well as some spicier notes.

2010s: SECOND FILL FRENCH OAK BARRELS: DISTILLED ON 14/03/2013

Young Tomatin in second fill casks allows the distillery character to shine through. Fresh green fruits and malty characteristics are to the fore with subtle spice and toffee from the light French oak influence. This is a vivacious malt which adds lighter tones but is kept in balance with the older casks.

Woodford Reserve Celebrate Old Fashioned Week!

November 5, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

Old Fashioned Week ( 1 – 10 NOVEMBER)

This Old Fashioned Week ( 1 – 10 NOVEMBER), Woodford Reserve (@WoodfordReserve), one of the most celebrated American whiskeys, will be hosting an array of experiences, events and limited edition menus in celebration of the world’s no.1 classic cocktail.

Drinks enthusiasts and cocktail aficionados alike will explore the rich and complex flavour profile of this beloved tipple, as some of the UK’s best bars serve up twists on the original recipe. No one will feel left out or bitter, as Woodford Reserve partners with 285 bars from London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Bristol and Cardiff to showcase the importance of flavour.

Thanks to its rich and full-bodied profile, Woodford Reserve will elevate and enhance this classic throughout the celebrations.

It is widely acknowledged that one’s unique flavour memory is based on the different tastes and aromatics they have experienced throughout their life.

Whether you foster a sweet tooth, prefer savoury serves or have a taste for spice, there is a proven, imperceptible link between taste and memory. With over 200 detectable flavour notes, Woodford Reserve’s award-winning Distiller’s Select bourbon will bring these to life through its 5 key flavour profiles; grain, wood, sweet aromatics, fruit and floral and spice.

Murder Inc’s Cocktail Creation!

Made with just a handful of ingredients, the Old Fashioned cocktail demands a flavourful, American whiskey base. Often heralded as the ‘bartender’s bourbon’, being the preferred choice for the Old Fashioned in 9 out of 10 of the world’s best bars, Woodford Reserve is working alongside some of the UK’s leading bartenders to create a map across the UK this Old Fashioned Week.

Kicking off in London, Soho institution Swift will be serving up a sweet take on an Old Fashioned called the ‘Timber’, inspired by Woodford Reserve’s sweet aromatic flavour notes.

For those staying locally, check out Murder Inc’s grain influenced, ‘Oryzae Does It Mate!’ while spice lovers can head down to Discount Suit Company where they can experience a spicy, ‘Fast and Loose’ amongst Spitalfields scenesters and City pros.

Finally, minimalist icons, Three Sheets, will offer a woody twist with their nutty alternative labelled ‘Whiskey + Milk’ as Islington haunt Homeboy list a fruity ‘Orchard Old Fashioned’.

Woodford Reserve really is the perfect base for all kinds of twists on the Old Fashioned, our most popular serve. We’ve taken inspiration from the ‘sweet aromatics’ flavour segment of Distiller’s Select – the backbone of the complex whiskey flavour – to craft a complex, wholesome Old Fashioned with notes directly from the award-winning mashbill.

We’re delighted to have partnered with Woodford Reserve for Old Fashioned Week and look forward to welcoming cocktail lovers from across the country.
– Mia Johansson: co-owner of Swift, Soho

Creating an authentic Old Fashioned to pair with the indulgent delights of parties and gatherings couldn’t be easier with one of two distinct gift packs.
