Expertly finished for bolder character, Maker's Mark 46™ is aged longer with special seared French oak staves added later in the process for a uniquely bold and smooth taste. Maker's Mark 46 was the brainchild of Bill Samuels, Jr., son of the Maker's Mark® founders, Bill and Margie. Released in 2010, Maker's Mark 46 was the first new major expression to be created at the Maker's Mark® Distillery since their original bourbon went into production in 1953.

THE FIRST IN A SERIES: Maker's Mark 46 is the first new bourbon Maker’s Mark have produced since opening their doors and the first offering from their wood-finishing series. They experimented tirelessly with the effects of wood-finishing to craft entirely new expressions of Maker's Mark that are true to the original. This required much trial and error – but expertise, passion and persistence paid off in the end. They enjoyed the Maker's Mark 46 wood-finishing experience so much, they decided to expand the concept with Maker's Mark Private Select®.

INTRODUCING FRENCH OAK: They tried dozens of different wood staves that were cut, toasted and charred a number of ways. They added these to Maker's Mark at cask strength and eventually discovered the wonderful effects that seared French oak had on their bourbon. These virgin staves are the essential component to the amped-up notes of vanilla and caramel of Maker's Mark 46, without the bitterness that often comes with additional aging.

SO, WHY "MAKER'S MARK 46"?: The wood-finishing experiments were largely enacted by Bill Samuels, Jr., and Master Distiller Kevin Smith, with a big assist from the Independent Stave Company, the distillery's longtime cooperage. After finally finding the flavour they were after, Bill, Jr., learned that the perfectly toasted French oak stave was on file as "Stave Profile No. 46."

BILL SAMUELS, JR: Members of the Samuels family speak often about "taste vision." Vision is what set the Maker's Mark founders – Bill, Sr., and Margie Samuels – on their course to create a product that tasted and looked like no other. This taste vision was passed on to their son, who developed his own thirst for a new kind of Maker's® after years of promoting his parents' bourbon.

AROMA: Hints of wood staves, caramel and sweetness.

TASTE: Very intense flavours; a big crescendo of wood blending perfectly with deep, complex and rich notes of vanilla and caramel

FINISH: Smooth and subtle.

Summary:

COUNTRY/REGION: Ireland.

CATEGORY: Blend.

DISTILLERY: Tullamore Dew.

BOTTLER: Distillery Bottling.

ABV: 40% Vol.

Tullamore D.E.W. Original is a triple distilled, triple blend of all three types of Irish whiskey: single malt, grain and pot still. The sweet softness of grain whiskey, soft spice from the pot still and fruitiness of the single malt create a uniqueness of flavour that marks out Tullamore D.E.W. from all other Irish whiskeys. Tullamore D.E.W. Original is triple cask matured in three distinct cask types – traditional refill, ex-bourbon and ex-sherry – to create unrivalled depth and balance of flavour.

The early floral yet biscuit flavour reflects the grain whiskey, while the soft spicy notes can be attributed to the pot still whiskey in the blend. The citrus flavour is complemented by the single malt. The nutty, or even marzipan note, combined with distinctive vanilla in the finish, is imparted by the sherry and bourbon casks used in maturation.

John Quinn, Global Brand Ambassador for Tullamore D.E.W., said: “Tullamore D.E.W. is the only whiskey to insist on the ‘Power of Three’ at the three key stages of whiskey making. It’s a triple distilled, triple blend of all three types of whiskey, matured in three types of cask. It’s the blend of all three types of triple distilled whiskey, and, in particular, the inclusion of single malt, that gives Tullamore D.E.W. more complexity and a unique smoothness, setting it apart from all others as an Irish whiskey of true character.”

NOSE: Light, sweet citrus and green apple combined with vanilla undertones.

TASTE: Early fresh fruit leads to a definite light spike followed by some toasted wood which evolves into a delicious vanilla sweetness.

FINISH: Put the glass down as you sense the almost buttery mellowness.

NOSE: one of those noses so delicate you daren't breath in too hard for fear of shattering it into a million pieces. The citrus, a kind of orange blossom honey thinned with juices of Jaffa, is of the cleanest style imaginable; likewise the barley is fresh and gristy. One of the most ethereal and elegant noses of all time;

TASTE: perfection. This is faultless. This is exactly how whisky should be. A delivery you hope to encounter or create – but suspect you probably never will. And here it is: in all its understated, genteel, feminine, seductive majesty. It is the nose all over again, but this time in liquid form, a physicality which curls against our taste buds and caresses them with the most erotic, arousing finger tip choice;

FINISH: nothing can quite follow the delivery and follow through, but it tries. Though the oaks can now be heard, a little bitterly by comparison, while the spices up the tingling factor;

BALANCE: by no means the first time I have encountered a single malt and grain in the same bottle. But I am hard pressed to remember one that was even close to being this wonderful…This is Compass Box's finest moment.

For this, their peatiest whisky yet, Compass Box have decided on No Name.

Compass Box came across a parcel of American oak barrels filled with mature, massively peaty single malt whisky – tarry and full of bonfire-like smokiness. To them, this was a whisky crying out to be tamed and shaped into a very special Compass Box limited edition.

Even peatier than their whisky called ‘The Peat Monster’ – the staple peated Blended Malt Scotch Whisky in the Compass Box range – the resulting blend is massive in terms of the intensity and complexity of flavour; a whisky brimming with complex peatiness, but tempered with hints of fruit character and an underlying sweetness.

Tasting Notes: A bonfire-like smokiness on the nose with a peatiness that is by turns tarry and medicinal with hints of autumn leaves. A powerful smokiness and peatiness follow, accented by hints of ripe cherries, plums and spice.

TASTING NOTES – SERGE WHISKYFUN.COM: Always with these wonderful Chagallian labels…

COLOUR: gold.

NOSE: this is a buttery one at first, full of mashed carrots, leaves, fern, soot, peonies, honeysuckle, then lager and leather, walnuts, with notes of amontillado, cigars and walnut cream. Do you know walnut cream?

WITH WATER: fresh wholegrain bread! Always a hit at WF Towers.

MOUTH: very very good if a little extractive and bitter(ish), with a lot of cracked pepper, bitter oranges, leather, tobacco, and bitter chocolate, then cloves and nutmeg. Forgot to mention cinnamon bread and bread dough.

WITH WATER: gets a little fruitier, mainly on oranges, which is usual too. Wonderful fat texture.

FINISH: rather long, a little rounder and fruitier. Caramelised tangerines and bergamots, with some honey, sultanas and tobacco in the aftertaste.

COMMENTS: loved the acridness, but this one’s actually rather rounder than the old OB. Quality remains extremely high, in my opinion.

Blackadder International were founded in 1995 by whisky writers, Robin Tucek and John Lamond, authors of the 1987 publication, The Malt Whisky File: The Essential Guide for the Malt Whisky Connoisseur. The company has gained great affection from whisky enthusiasts for its Raw Cask series, which is deliberately drawn un-filtered from the cask so as to retain all cask sediment along with any natural oils and fats. The company is credited with a key role in the popularisation of cask strength whiskies since its inception.

For over 30 years, Juveniles Bistrot à Vins in the 1st arrondissement of Paris has been a crossroads for winemakers, spirits producers, writers and various sorts of affable hedonists from all over the world.

Compass Box & Juveniles share a similar approach to good food and drink, seeking out integrity and not taking things too seriously. Both their businesses are obsessed with quality and provenance. Both like to do things in their own way.

For this Limited Edition, Tim from Juveniles asked Compass Box to create something “…bright, smooth, not smoky…an assemblage perhaps between 12 and 15 years-old…”.

This assemblage (we love Tim’s use of this wine word to describe whisky blending) comprises single malt whiskies from four distilleries, each bringing a distinctiveness to the whole.

You’ll find notes of barley sugar, pear drop and vanilla, complemented by an ethereal underlying herbal character.

It’s a whisky to be enjoyed with great food and even better company.

For 2019, The Peat Monster has a new label. Featuring this quite marvellous specially-commissioned painting, all batches released going forward will showcase the new artwork. It isn’t just the packaging that is different, however: the recipe has evolved, too.

Still very much the whisky for those who love big, rich, smoky-peaty malts, the latest version of THE PEAT MONSTER is older and more elegant than before.

Inspired by feedback from smoky whisky lovers, the new Painting Label of THE PEAT MONSTER incorporates single malts with a more aromatic and graceful style of smokiness. Compass Box have sought to retain the peaty intensity for which THE PEAT MONSTER has long been celebrated, whilst creating a depth and elegance not seen before.

New batches of THE PEAT MONSTER boast a spectrum of powerful coastal flavours, combining the smokiness of a driftwood fire with more medicinal peat notes. Orchard fruits and rich cask-derived creaminess balance the multi-layered smoke. It is a new peaty landscape, as the Painting Label shows.

The evolution is a subtle one. We hope you will hunt down both labels and enjoy teasing out the contrasts.
