Innis & Gunn Unveils ‘Vanishing Point 06’ Imperial Stout In Special Collaboration With The Glenlivet!

November 8, 2022 by Gary Leave a Comment

INNIS & GUNN COLLABORATES WITH THE GLENLIVET!

Innis & Gunn, one of the UK’s most successful craft beer businesses, has unveiled ‘Vanishing Point 06’, an Imperial Stout brewed in special collaboration with The Glenlivet!

The latest in Innis & Gunn’s annual Vanishing Point series, ‘Vanishing Point 06’ has been matured in oak casks that previously held The Glenlivet 18-year-old, one of the finest single malt whiskies in the world.

Just 1,500 bottles of ‘Vanishing Point 06’, an 11% Imperial Stout, will be available via the Innis & Gunn online shop – www.innisandgunn.com – from 11th November. Priced at £15 per 500ml bottle, Vanishing Point 06 comes with an exclusive gift carton, making this release an attractive option for Christmas shoppers.

During its 365 days of maturation in The Glenlivet 18-year-old casks, ‘Vanishing Point 06’ has taken on characteristics of the whisky left behind in the oak, which harmonise beautifully with hints of dark chocolate and caramel from the beer.

Jet black in colour, the beer offers an eruption of flavour on the palate, almost spicy yet balanced by honeycomb toffee and vanilla. The finish lingers, with a warming whisky sweetness.

Our first edition of Vanishing Point was in 2016 and since then each annual release of the beer has been an evolution of the last. A ‘Vanishing Point’ is something always slightly beyond reach and this name perfectly fits this beer and our quest for continual progression in brewing, evolving year by year.

Collaborating with The Glenlivet to mature this beer in their rare 18-year-old whisky casks has taken ‘Vanishing Point 06′ to another level, introducing flavours and complexity that only a whisky skilfully matured in this way, could have left in the casks.
– Dougal Gunn Sharp: Founder and Master Brewer

Just 1,500 bottles of ‘Vanishing Point 06’, an 11% Imperial Stout, will be available

Innis & Gunn’s Vanishing Point programme is now in its sixth year and is a key part of Innis & Gunn’s portfolio, which also includes their award-winning premium Lager Beer and flagship iconic single-malt whisky cask matured beer, The Original, as well as a range of other limited-edition brews.

Priced at £15, ‘Vanishing Point 06’ comes in 500ml bottle and is boxed in a specially designed carton, making an attractive gifting option. Just over 1,500 bottles will be available via the Innis & Gunn Online Shop from 11th November. www.innisandgunn.com

Cask Trade Partners With Renegade Rum In Exclusive Deal!

November 8, 2022 by Gary Leave a Comment

Cask Trade partners with Renegade in exclusive deal!

Cask Trade has announced an exclusive agreement for the sale of rum casks from the Renegade Distillery for the next three years!

Renegade Rum Distillery in Grenada is the latest ground-breaking terroir-driven project by iconoclastic genius Mark Reynier. Former owner of the successful Bruichladdich distillery in Scotland and now founder of the Waterford Distillery in Ireland, Mark has turned his attention to the rum industry making terroir-driven rum from fresh sugarcane juice.

In the exclusive arrangement masters of whisky appreciation and specialists Cask Trade will be offering casks of new-make cane rum in hogsheads and barrels over the next three years.

We are very excited to have been chosen as Renegade’s exclusive cask partner. Cask strength rum has become increasingly attractive and this is a unique opportunity for people to buy into this revolutionary brand.

Mark Reynier is a true visionary in our industry and someone I have followed and admired for many years.
– Simon Aron: Managing Director of Cask Trade

With a background steeped in the French wine industry, the importance of terroir has been a driving force in all of Reynier’s projects. Starting out on the west coast of Scotland, he bought the then rundown Bruichladdich distillery and completely transformed its fortunes by using locally grown barley and much slower improved distillation techniques. Emboldened by the success here, Reynier looked for the world’s highest quality barley and found that it grew near Waterford in Ireland. This was the inspiration for opening his Irish whisky distillery, Waterford Distillery, which again was a huge success.

Now he has turned his attention to the rum industry. Reynier started out with the ambition of making a rum as interesting, serious and complex as a great single malt whisky. The result is the Renegade Rum Distillery in Grenada.

After several years of Indie bottling rums from around the Caribbean, I decided I wanted a go at making it, that I could do a better job. In 2014 I set out to answer the simple question: how to make a rum as profound as a single malt. Renegade is my answer. Terroir-driven spirit, fully traceable and totally transparent.

A rum distilled from sugar cane in the most environmentally compliant and advanced distillery ever built in the Caribbean, the first in the windward isles for over 100 years. And the production values – the same as for Waterford – provide a much needed industry rigour validated by the Cane Code on each bottle.
– Mark Reynier: CEO

Terroir-Driven Rum – After much research, Grenada was discovered to be the perfect location for growing sugar cane. An island with a diversity of fertile volcanic soil, microclimates, and varying altitudes. By growing several types of sugar cane on a dozen farms scattered around the island they have created up to 70 completely unique terroirs, which – when milled and distilled individually, terroir by terroir, have the potential to create countless distinct distillates. This is completely ground-breaking and the first for the rum industry.

Sugarcane – The rum is distilled from fresh sugar cane juice – the source of rum’s natural flavour – and not molasses. Initially, six heritage varieties of sugar cane were planted on the island. This then was finally narrowed down to three types which produced the finest distillate and adapted the best to the Grenadian terroir. As sugarcane production on the island had virtually ceased, the distillery realised they had to become farmers as well. A company called CaneCo was set up to supply the needs of the distillery cultivating 200 acres of land.

The Distillery – With building commencing in 2018, completed during the global pandemic in 2021, Renegade Rum is the first new distillery on the Windward Islands for over 100 years! This modern, high-tech distillery, using knowledge gleaned from the whisky industry, is environmentally sound as the power comes from a biomass boiler that uses the spent sugar cane excess, which is called bagasse. The copper pot stills as well as the small batch column stills were manufactured by the famous Forsyths in Scotland. Each day one subsection of a field is distilled, producing a huge variety of different distillates. Fermentation is another pioneering aspect of the distillery as they have installed the world’s first, horizontal and thermoregulated fermenters designed to produce the cleanest, purest flavours of sugar cane.

Maturation – Renegade use several different types of casks. Virgin American and Virgin French oak, First Fill American and Premium French, and interestingly Colombian Andean oak. The optimal maturation is estimated at five years.

Cask Trade has announced an exclusive agreement for the sale of any casks being sold by the Renegade Distillery for the next three years. The cask types available are as follows:

Renegade Cane Rum, Hogshead, 2022 to 2024

Renegade Cane Rum, Barrel, 2022 to 2024

The casks are new-make rum. Each option is filled into various type of casks including, but not limited to, French Oak (ex-wine casks) and American Oak.

Maturation options include locations in Grenada or Waterford, Ireland.

“Best Whisky” For Cù Bòcan Highland Single Malt!

November 2, 2022 by Gary Leave a Comment

“Best Whisky” for Cù Bòcan Highland Single Malt!

Cù Bòcan Highland Single Malt has been awarded with “Best Whisky” at the prestigious Highlands and Islands Food and Drink Awards!

Following a successful re-brand in 2019, the brand has grown from strength to strength. 2021 saw a fantastic period of recovery following on from the pandemic and that success has continued into 2022.

The award winning experimental Highland Single Malt is distilled every winter at Tomatin Distillery

The award winning experimental Highland Single Malt is distilled every winter at Tomatin Distillery in limited batches and made with lightly peated Scottish barley for its signature wisp of smoke. In late 2005, after Tomatin had achieved its annual production quota, the Distillery Manager at the time brought in a load of lightly peated barley allowing the distillery to produce its own peated spirit for the last week of the year.

This production coincided with incredibly low water temperatures and resulted in a slightly oilier mouthfeel in the new make spirit. Recognising the quality of this spirit, the distillery continued to produce Cù Bòcan in small batches every winter since 2005.

Cù Bòcan is renowned for exploring innovative maturations, creating whiskies full of intrigue and surprise. Earlier this year the brand released two new expressions within their Creation series, Creation #3, matured in Moroccan Cabernet Sauvignon casks and Creation #4, matured in a combination of Port and Cognac casks. More recently the brand released it’s first age stated whisky, Cù Bòcan 15 Year Old, matured fully in Oloroso Sherry casks.

The current Cù Bòcan range now comprises of Cù Bòcan Signature, the only ongoing product within the range, matured in Bourbon, Oloroso Sherry and North American Virgin Oak casks, the limited edition Creation series and the newly released limited edition Cù Bòcan 15 Year Old.

Sustainable practices such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the use of non-fossil fuels are the cornerstones of the Tomatin Distillery and Scotch Whisky Industry’s efforts to make manufacturing more sustainable and support a low carbon economy. Earlier this year Tomatin Distillery invested in a partnership with Highland Tourism, promoting sustainable tourism in the Highlands.

“The accolade of “Best Whisky” proves that our commitment to quality, taste and sustainability has been recognised and we’re delighted with the win.!

Tomatin Distillery is working with fellow members of the Scotch Whisky Association towards achieving the ambitious target, for the industry, of being carbon net zero by 2045 as well as supporting the responsibility to the local community by protecting the local environment.

The accolade of “Best Whisky” proves that our commitment to quality, taste and sustainability has been recognised and we’re delighted with the win.

We have exciting plans for the future and we look forward to opening up the world of lightly peated whisky with Cù Bòcan single malt.
– Julia Mackillop: Senior Brand Manager

Each Cù Bòcan Single Malt offers an exploration in the subtleties of smoke, the character of the casks and the mastery of maturation. The range is always non-chill filtered and natural in colour. Cù Bòcan Single malt is available online and in specialist retailers worldwide.

Sampling Fettercairn Scottish Oak 18 Year Old Whisky – A Dram That Really Spoils The Senses!

October 28, 2022 by Gary Leave a Comment

Fettercairn Scottish Oak 18 Year Old!

Fettercairn distillery has entered a new age with its launch of their 18 Years Old single malt and their first ever whisky finished in locally sourced Scottish Oak!

“At Fettercairn we are passionate about the potential of Scottish Oak and the unique flavour characteristics it offers to the whisky maker.” – Gregg Glass

Brought to life through their ground-breaking Scottish Oak programme and calling on a 100% finish in Scottish oak sourced from the Scottish Highlands, this whisky represents a long-term vision coming to life. Born from an initiative which extends far beyond cask production to the creation of a circular economy and the future-proofing Scottish Oak for the next generation of whisky makers.

Progressive and innovative in style and substance, this whisky celebrates what makes Fettercairn different – from the surprisingly tropical house style achieved by the distinctive copper cooling ring distillation; to their future focused, innovative approach to local sourcing and working with the land in Aberdeenshire – ‘The Garden of Scotland’.

Fettercairn 18 is a culmination of an approach to whisky making I have developed across a number of years. This first release reflects the dedication not just of myself, but of our partners ‘from Forest to Field’, who each played a role in rekindling the skills required to harvest Scottish Oak.

At Fettercairn we are passionate about the potential of Scottish Oak and the unique flavour characteristics it offers to the whisky maker.
– Gregg Glass: Master Whisky Maker

Fettercairn has kindly sent me a sample of the 18 Year Old to try.
Cheers fettercairnwhisky.com (@FettercairnWh) for the opportunity!

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Fettercairn Scottish Oak 18 Year Old Whisky (46.8%)

Natural in colour and non-chill filtered.

Nose: Tropical fruits are very much to the fore and then along comes crisp apples, cane sugar and toffee. After a while a strong citrus develops mainly consisting of lemon. Cereal finishes off a very fine nose indeed!

Palate: Creamy and smooth with powerful tropical flavours leading to vanilla, toffee and nice dark coffee.

Finish: Strong, warming spice with a little pepper and a dry finish.

Overall: A lovely, smooth dram that really spoils the palate! A broad range of flavours that you’ll want to revisit time and time again!

Fettercairn Scottish Oak 18 Year Old Whisky is now available at an RSP of £175

Kilchoman Launch ‘Casado’ Single Malt Whisky – Their Autumn Limited Edition Release For 2022!

October 21, 2022 by Gary Leave a Comment

Casado Single Malt Whisky!

Kilchoman launch Casado, the Autumn Limited Edition Release for 2022!

Experimenting and exploring different flavours throughout the whisky-making process is something Kilchoman is always doing.

ANTHONY WILLS: Founder

In recent years barley variety and yeast influence have been discussed in depth but wood management remains a key part of any single malt.

Anthony Wills, Kilchoman Founder and Managing Director, had the idea to try something out of the norm and purchase 6,000 litre red wine vats at char level 2 and 3, each giving a slightly different impact on the whisky finishing inside, then marrying them together after a longer than usual finish.

The red wine marriage gives the whisky layers of red fruit and spices which complement the vanilla and butterscotch influence of the bourbon barrels beautifully.

– ANTHONY WILLS: Founder

12,900 bottles available!

Tasting Notes:

Nose: An opening note of intense campfire smoke balanced with ripe summer stone fruits; peach, plum and cherry. Deep notes of marzipan become the focus combined with layered maritime notes
Palate: The red wine vatting brings pepper and spice on the first taste. Dry, salty peat smoke sits on the palate, yet fruit notes of apricot and lemon find their way through
Finish: A long finish which brings a hot, spicy character from the marriage in Portuguese red wine vats. Stewed, cooked fruit notes bring a sweet-jam profile providing an on-going sweet-ness that the classic Kilchoman smoke balances beautifully

Kilchoman Loch Gorm 2022

Kilchoman produces its 100% Islay single malt from barley which is grown in fields surrounding the distillery and completes every stage of the whisky-making process at the distillery, including traditional floor malting. Kilchoman is the only distillery in Scotland to do this.

Since the first bottling was released in 2009, Kilchoman has quickly established itself as a high quality Islay Single Malt Whisky with these notable awards:

– The IWSC 2022 competition – Machir Bay scored 98 points and was awarded ‘Gold Outstanding’. 100% Islay was also awarded a “Gold Award’ and scored 95 points.

Sampling Borders Malt & Rye Blended Scotch Whisky – The Taste Of Things To Come!

October 20, 2022 by Gary Leave a Comment

WS:01 Borders Malt & Rye Blended Scotch Whisky

Last Wednesday nights @TweetTastings, which was once again ably hosted by Steve from The Whisky Wire, gave us a great opportunity to savour a brand new dram and to experience it amongst friends!

Only 5,988 bottles will ever be sold in the UK

The dram in question was WS:01 Borders Malt & Rye Blended Scotch Whisky which is the first Blended Scotch Whisky to leave the Scottish borders in 185 years!

To create this whisky, The Borders Distillery distilled a small batch of rye spirit and matured it in the same fresh-fill bourbon casks as their malt.

Each bottle of WS:01 Borders Malt & Rye, which is the first Scotch whisky blend from The Borders Distillery to be entirely distilled at its Hawick based site, is individually numbered. Only 5,988 bottles will ever be sold in the UK.

If you want to catch up on what all the tweet tasters had to say you can view their comments by searching for the hash tag #TheBordersDistillery on Twitter.

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – WS:01 Borders Malt & Rye (40%)

The Borders Distillery Ð Workshop Series

WS:01 Borders Malt & Rye
Blended Scotch Whisky
ABV: 40%
Cask: Bourbon
Comprised of: 63.8% Single Grain Ð 36.2% Single Malt
£40.00

Nose: Not sure I’ve seen a paler dram! Very tropical on the nose with apples and toffee. This morphs into delightful apple pie & custard. Later on the sweetness is balanced by some cereal & biscuit.

Palate: Dry on the palate with cane sweetness and fruit. Lemon citrus then comes to the fore quite forcefully.

Finish: There’s some creamy spice and little bit of coffee and it all finishes warmly.

Overall: I wish the ABV had been higher – it would have given more flavour options but it’s a grower though! A progressively moreish dram that works well on the palate.

The great thing though is the chance to sample a developing and exciting brand – good things to come I think!

This is the first Blended Scotch Whisky to leave the Scottish borders in 185 years!

Many thanks to Steve at The Whisky Wire (@TheWhiskyWire / @TweetTastings) for a great evening and Border’s Distillery (@thebordersdistillery) for sending the samples and without whom!

Bookings Go Live At The Cairn Distillery!

October 18, 2022 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Cairn Distillery is Open!

The Cairn Distillery has opened its doors to the public! Bookings can now be made online for visitors to experience the first new distillery to be built in the Cairngorms National Park for more than a century!

Moray based family business, Gordon & MacPhail first unveiled their plans for a distillery at Craggan, near Grantown-on-Spey, in 2018, with planning permission granted in 2019.

Cairn Distillery is the first new distillery to be built in the Cairngorms National Park for more than a century!

The new distillery aims to build on Gordon & MacPhail’s 127-year heritage of producing exceptional Scotch whisky to inspire future generations. With magnificent views of its stunning location just outside Grantown-on-Spey, visitors can choose from a selection of immersive experiences, each culminating in a whisky tasting in The Discovery Room. With floor-to-ceiling windows, the room provides a stunning backdrop for visitors as they taste the future today: blended malt whiskies created to give a sense of notes, flavours and aromas that will be seen in the character of single malts that will be released from The Cairn Distillery in the 2030s.

After many years of preparation, planning and construction we look forward to finally opening the doors to members of the public, and in particular the local community, who have been so supportive since the project was first announced.

Having secured such a beautiful and awe-inspiring location overlooking the River Spey towards the Cairngorms, we wanted to create a building which complements the majesty of the environment. We are delighted with the result, and we look forward to sharing it with visitors from all over the world.
– Ewen Mackintosh: Managing Director at Gordon & MacPhail

These sherry cask-matured, unpeated expressions are being released under the new CRN57 brand (the distillery sits on 57 degrees latitude from the equator), with 70cl bottlings available exclusively to those who tour the distillery. The oldest expression in the CRN57 range, a 70-Year-Old, is presented in a stunning crystal decanter and is the oldest blended malt whisky in the world.

Nestled on the banks of the river Spey on the northern frontier of the Cairngorms National Park, every detail of The Cairn Distillery has been considered to create a remarkable structure that is reflective of its environment. From its sedum roof which encourages insect life to thrive, to the Caithness stone pathways, every aspect is designed to respect the natural shapes and colours around it. Reforestation projects are also underway to encourage native species and particular care has been taken to encourage the local population of rare goldeneye ducks.

Food is also exclusively available to those who take a tour at The Gathering which offers tapas-style plates of the finest Scottish produce designed as the perfect accompaniment to an experience like no other.

Open seven days a week all year round, visitor experiences start at £25, with three options available
