Cotswolds Founder’s Choice Wins Best Whisk(e)y In Show at American Spirits Council of Tasters (ASCOT) Awards!

June 17, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

Congrats To Cotswolds Distillery!

Cotswolds Distillery are delighted to announce that their Cotswolds Founder’s Choice Single Malt Whisky has just been awarded Best Whisk(e)y in Show at the prestigious American Spirits Council of Tasters ASCOT Awards 2021!

To my knowledge this the first time, in any major competition I have been part of, that an English Whisky has won Best in Show

This is the first time an English whiskey won a major spirits competition. Usually, Scotch, Japanese, Irish or bourbon whiskey win, with an occasional Canadian victor. What Cotswolds did is absolutely unprecedented. The best part is that you can buy this for less than $100 in the United States and 70 pounds in the UK.
– Fred Minnick: Creator of the new international spirits competition, the ASCOT Awards

Notes of toffee, oak and red fruits, and a beautiful, deep colour!

Fred Minnick is a Spirits personality and veteran tasting judge who is the host of his own Dash Radio show in America and co-founder of the Bourbon and Beyond Festival and host of Bourbon Up on Amazon Prime.

The ASCOT Awards have an extremely experienced tasting panel of 27 and the process of picking the multiple category winners was streamed live on YouTube. The transparent voting system saw Cotswolds Founder’s Choice previously winning Double Platinum and Best in Category for World Whisky, before winning Best in Show in a dramatic taste-off.

It was tasted across multiple categories against world-class spirits including Rye, Bourbon, Scottish and Irish Whisk(e)y. The five judges who made the final selection were: Fred Minnick, Lew Bryson, Max A. Solano, Clay Risen and Susan Reigler.

I am delighted that our English whisky, Founder’s Choice, has won such a prestigious award and against so many well-respected whisk(e)y brands from Scotland and the US.

The tasting panel is made up of well-respected American drink writers, mixologists and spirits educators and we are thrilled that they have chosen one of my favourite single malt whiskies from the distillery. We followed the process that was created by our mentor the late and great Dr. Jim Swan, who always believed our STR cask should have its own bottling.
– Daniel Szor: Cotswolds Distillery Founder

Cotswolds Founder’s Cask is cask strength and comes from Founder Dan’s favourite “STR” casks: shaved, toasted and re-charred American Oak red wine barriques. These uniquely active casks give a rich and intense maturation to the distillery’s fruity single malt spirit, offering notes of toffee, oak and red fruits, and a beautiful, deep colour.

About The SMWS

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is a club unlike any other.

As well as being a place to connect with other like-minded whisky lovers, they are also internationally renowned for their mission: “to provide our members with an adventurous and fun journey of discovery of the world’s widest collection of single cask whiskies.”

Conceptualised in the late 70’s and established in 1983, the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, now 35 years old, has branches and partners bars in 19 countries globally. The Society has a selection of over 500 casks every year, each cask yielding a few hundred or less whisky bottles which are unique to that cask.

Rather than name their Whiskies after the distillery, the Society has a coding system. The Society also creates fantastic tasting notes summaries for their Whiskies and other bottles. The whiskies are straight from the cask single malt, undiluted, without chill-filtration or colouring at cask strength.

More recently the Society has been named Independent Bottler of the Year in Whisky Magazine’s prestigious Independent Bottlers’ Challenge (IBC) competition.

In May 1836 Glenfarclas Distillery was officially licenced for the first time, adding the designation “Distillery” to Rechlerich Farm. Therefore, May 2021 marks 185 years of legal distilling and Glenfarclas is celebrating the anniversary with a limited-edition bottling.

George Grant, sixth generation family member and current Sales Director, said of the release: “Due to my grandfather’s foresight, here at Glenfarclas we are very fortunate to have casks in our dunnage warehouses from 8 different decades, from the 1950s to the 2020s. Some of our warehouses even predate the 185th anniversary we are celebrating, as ‘uisge beatha’ was being made at Glenfarclas a good few years before a licence was held. To mark 185 legal years we have selected some of our finest casks from across the decades and put together a whisky with old, rich, sherried flavours that remain fresh and vibrant in your glass. Here’s to the next 185 years! Slàinte.”.

Glenfarclas means ‘Valley of the Green Grassland’ and the spring water, which ensures the verdant green grass, is essential to the distinct flavour of Glenfarclas Highland Single Malt Whisky. It bubbles up, crystal clear, from the underlying granite on the slopes of the Speyside mountain, Ben Rinnes, to supply the distillery below. There, it is combined with the finest malted barley, twice distilled in traditional, direct fired, copper pot stills and only the lightest and best fractions of alcohol are collected, two thirds to be filled into the finest Spanish Sherry oak casks and one third into plain oak casks in which to lie maturing over many years.

Times may have changed, but it’s what has stayed the same that makes Glenfarclas unique: the six generations of Grant family pride and the revered quality of their famous Glenfarclas Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Sampling Jura’s ‘Distillery Cask Fèis Ìle Edition 2021’ – A Festival Of Flavour!

June 11, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Jura Distillery Manager’s Tasting!

I was lucky enough to be invited to the Jura Distillery Manager’s Tasting last Sunday as part of their online Fèis Ìle events.

We were there to celebrate the launch of Distillery Cask Fèis Ìle Edition 2021. A special single cask release which, for the first time, will support the vital annual Jura Music Festival!

The Distillery Cask Fèis Ìle Edition 2021 proved to be very popular and sold out within the hour. Good news as a donation of £25 from each bottle sold will help to honour Jura’s favourite island event of the year, the Jura Music Festival.

During the tasting we were treated front and back with some fantastic folk punk and then we had a tasty cocktail courtesy of ‘The Gate’ consisting of their handmade cocktail with lime, orange and ginger beer. Very refreshing and an excellent palate cleaner.

Then the fun really began – we were treated to some drams to sample which consisted of:-

  • Jura Aged 21 Years – “Time” – Travel Retail Exclusive
  • Jura Fèis Ìle Distillery Exclusive Cask 2019
  • Jura Fèis Ìle Distillery Exclusive Cask 2021

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Jura Aged 21 Years – “Time” – Travel Retail Exclusive (46.7%)

Jura Aged 21 Years – “Time”

Matured in American White Oak ex bourbon barrels, before being finished in ex-peated malt casks.

Nose: Toffee and green apples while reminders of a dusky library linger in the background.

Palate: Cane sweetness with caramel, vanilla and green apples.

Finish: Very smooth with some peppery spice blending in with grapefruit dryness.

Overall: A very civilised dram with some sweet, toffee and fresh fruit flavours – certainly worth taking a trip for!

Tasting Notes – Jura Fèis Ìle Distillery Exclusive Cask 2019 (56.5%)

A heavily peated 17 year old sherry butt filled in 2002.

Distilled: 27th. March 2002
Bottled: May 2019
Non-chill filtered and natural colour.

Nose: Peaty, smokey, BBQ flavours very much to the fore with a lovely coastal feel!

Palate: Liquid peat smoke with some added liquorice and treacle.

Finish: It’s spicy and sweet at the end with generous pepper and peat woodiness and a hint of salt.

Overall: I always love a smokey dram and this one doesn’t disappoint!

Tasting Notes – Jura Fèis Ìle Distillery Exclusive Cask 2021 (57.1%)

Jura Fèis Ìle Distillery Exclusive Cask 2021

18 Years old, unpeated whisky. Fully matured in a refill ex-sherry butt from Jerez, Spain.

Distilled: 30th. October 2002
Bottled: May 2021
Non-chill filtered and natural colour.

Nose: Sweet apple with pear and tropical fruits. Toffee arrives later on.

Palate: Very tropical with added apple, cane sugar sweetness, orange and chocolate.

Finish: Some punchy peppery spice that sure adds some Oomph! Shades of salt at the end.

Overall: A completely different dram to the 2019 – the 2021 is a sweeter, lighter, tropical fruit whisky.

Though punchy it’s very smooth and very enjoyable! Some tasters added water but I wouldn’t personally – I love it as it is!

Many thanks to jurawhisky.com (@jurawhisky) for sending such a glorious tasting pack!

About Jura:

Jura is an island nestled off the West Coast of Scotland. With only one road, one pub, one whisky distillery and 212(ish) people, Jura is as beautiful as it is remote.

The distillery was established in 1810 and reborn in 1963 to revive the community.

Inspired by our history and our island home, we create single malt with a true passion for the craft of whisky making.

Sampling Two New Whisky Exchange ‘Exclusives’ – Balblair 2005 & Arran 1996 – Rare Summer Treats!

June 8, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

More Whisky Exchange ‘Exclusives’!

The Whisky Exchange has released two more drams in it’s popular ‘Exclusives’ range!

First up is an ex-bourbon-matured Balblair 2005. Wonderfully fruity and a release that truly shows off a side of the distillery that is often overlooked.

The second dram is a 1996 Vintage Arran – matured in what The Whisky Exchange thinks was a wine cask – Arran’s records apparently are a bit spotty back in the early days of filling, and the exact cask type isn’t known!

The Whisky Exchange has kindly sent me a sample of each one to try (Thanks @WhiskyExchange!)

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Balblair 2005 – Whisky Exchange Exclusive (46%)

Balblair 2005

Region: Highland
Matured in a single cask
Cask Number: 213
Bottled: 2021

Not chill-filtered
Natural colour
180 bottles available

The Balblair retails at £145

Nose: Gorgeous aromatic fruits! Ripe & ready pears, green apples topped off with cane sugar syrup.

Palate: Sweet pears and apples, a little liquorice and shades of blackcurrant.

Finish: Punchy spice tempered with those pears. Grapefruit adds some dryness at the end.

Overall: Another quality dram from The Whisky Exchange’s ‘Exclusives’ range that doesn’t disappoint. The fruit flavours are the highlight of this dram – those pear aromas are amazing! A fresh, light whisky that’s perfect for the Summer – and long may the Sun shine!

Tasting Notes – Arran 1996: 24 Years Old – Whisky Exchange Exclusive (53.4%)

Arran 1996: 24 Years Old

Region: Island
Matured in a wine cask (possibly!)
Cask Number: 757
Bottled: March 2021

Not chill-filtered
Natural colour
273 bottles available

The Arran retails at £199

Nose: Powerful spiced orange that really dominates the nose – but only in a good way! Toffee with slight hints of smoke.

Palate: Rich mouthfeel, lots of orange, sweet vanilla, and plump fruits.

Finish: A little pepper to add to the finish but in the main it’s the initial palate that continues through to the end.

Overall: A beautiful dram! Incredibly morish and satisfying. It’s a rare treat at the price I know – but what a treat!

Once again, many thanks to The Whisky Exchange (@WhiskyExchange) for the tasters!

The Whisky Exchange Launches – ’20 Whiskies That Changed The World’ – Let The Journey Begin!

June 4, 2021 by Gary Leave a Comment

20 Whiskies That Changed The World!

The Whisky Exchange has launched a tasting set that takes you on a journey through the ground-breaking whiskies of the 21st century!

In the two decades since brothers, Sukhinder and Rajbir Singh founded The Whisky Exchange, which has now become the world’s leading fine spirits retailer, the whisky landscape has evolved dramatically.

From the meteoric rise of peated styles to the emergence of stellar whiskies from Japan, US, India and Taiwan, it has been quite a journey!

A journey through the ground-breaking whiskies of the 21st century!

Now Sukhinder and Rajbir invite you to experience that journey with 20 Whiskies that Changed the World, sharing the whiskies that have had the greatest impact on them, the whisky industry and whisky fans around the globe.

This eye-catching gift set of 20 x 3cl Perfect Measure samples tells the story of this transformation in the best way possible – by offering you the chance to taste some of the whiskies that made it happen.

20 Whiskies that Changed the World can serve as a delicious whisky cabinet that you dip into to enjoy whenever the mood takes you or as an educational whisky guide. The whiskies are grouped into a selection of four themes – Whisky Revolution, Magic of the Cask, Peat Makes the World Go Round and The New World – accompanied by a tasting book featuring producer profiles, tasting notes, and online tasting videos.

The whiskies are arranged in tasting order so you can either enjoy them at your leisure or taste them in four flights alongside the video guides.

In the 1980s, when my brother Rajbir and I were living above and working in The Nest, our parents’ off-licence in north-west London, the world of whisky was very different to the thriving, innovative industry we see today.

Whisky was always magical – to us, at least – but the new ideas, innovations, techniques and personalities who have graced the whisky stage so far this millennium have elevated the world of whisky to a new level. We hope people enjoy drinking these whiskies as much as we enjoyed choosing them.
