Focus on: Glenfiddich Distillery

[geo_mashup_map]

Glenfiddich was established by William Grant in 1876, with the first spirit running off the stills in 1887. Today the company is still run by his descendants and as the first whisky to truly market itself as a single malt, Glenfiddich now accounts for about 30% of all single malt sales worldwide. The iconic triangular green bottle was introduced in 1957 and can now be found in just about every licensed establishment (and probably most of the unlicensed ones as well) in the world.

Glenfiddich Caoran Reserve 12 Year old Single Malt

March 2, 2009 by Gary Leave a Comment

Glenfiddich Caoran Reserve / 12 Year old

Glenfiddich Caoran Reserve / 12 Year old

This particular brand is a Single Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky.

Glenfiddich has recently released this particular malt and it has a bit of a twist!
The malted barley has been dried using peat to produce a more characterful, smoky flavour. Shades of Islay malts perhaps?

Anyway it’s been a resounding successs since its launch and sure to become increasingly popular in the future.

You can buy it here: Glenfiddich Caoran Reserve / 12 Year old

Focus on: Glenmorangie Distillery

[geo_mashup_map]

Glenmorangie was founded in 1843 and is Gaelic for ”vale of tranquility”. A malt of great character and heritage with a unique flavour and bouquet.

Glenmorangie has existed as a distillery since 1843 when William Matheson bought a license to make whisky on the site of a brewery located near the Tarlogie Springs in Ross-shire in the highlands of Scotland. Matheson bought two second-hand gin stills to make his spirit, and the distillery is famous for having the tallest stills in Scotland, although these days there are eight stills rather than just two. In 1918 the distillery was bought by Macdonald and Muir, who steered Glenmorangie through the diffiicult inter-war period when the combination of Prohibition and the Great Depression made conditions very difficult for the industry as a whole. Having survived, Glenmorangie went on to flourish, doubling the number of stills to four in 1977 and again to eight in 1990, the year after the company had secured the future of its own water source by buying 650 acres of land around the Tarlogie Springs.

Focus on: Lagavulin Distillery

[geo_mashup_map]

Part of the triumvirate of heavily-peated southern Islay malts, alongside LVMH’s Ardbeg and Beam Global’s Laphroaig, Lagavulin was officially founded in 1816 by John Johnston (although illicit distillation is said to have been carried out on the site since the mid-eighhteenth centrury) and has been the Islay representative of Diageo’s Classic Malt selection since 1987. The histories of Lagavulin and Laphroaig have been closely tied together, with Laphroaig said to have been founded by the son of the founder of Lagavulin.

Consistently excellent, full of our favourite Lagavulin characteristics (smoky, peaty, warming and smooth) which we know and love but with an added extra layer of sweetness.

Glenmorangie Burgundy Finish

Glenmorangie Burgundy Finish

Glenmorangie Burgundy Finish

A more recent addition to the Glenmorangie range from The Whisky Exchange is `Glenmorangie Burgundy Finish`.

It is Burgundy cask which adds extra fruitiness and feels more luxuriant in the mouth. It’s a strong, spice (but not peppery) taste.

Other finishes are also available.

Highland Park was recently named ‘Best spirit in the world’ by USA whisky expert Paul Pacult in his 2005, Spirit Journal 100 listing of the world’s best 100 distilled spirits. Highland Park’s award-winning quality has its roots in the whisky’s Orkney home and the obsession of the people who craft it. Established in 1798 on Orkney, Highland Park is one of the most remote Scotch whisky distilleries in the world. This northerly island location gives access to unique heather peat from the distillery’s own moor, water from the same spring that has fed the distillery for over 200 years, and the cool, maritime climate that allows the spirit to interact gently with the carefully-chosen oak casks and develop into the fabulously rich, layered whisky that is  consistently lauded by connoisseurs and experts.

A lucky mistake …

February 23, 2009 by Gary Leave a Comment

While shopping recently for my next bottle of malt I inadvertantly I saw a great offer for a malt I’ve never tried. In the end the label was misplaced and the malt in question was not on offer but my dissapointment soon turned to joy when I tried it!

It was a truly lovely malt! Peaty but not too peaty (not when compared to Laphroig), and what I consider to be a great introduction to peaty malts. It’s now added to my list of favourites. A friend of mine who came to stay thought so too as we finished the bottle off in two nights!

Oh and the name of the malt? BUNNAHABHAIN 12 Year Old.
