The English Distillery Introduces Their First Sherry Cask Single Malt Whisky!

October 4, 2023 by Gary Leave a Comment

The English Sherry Cask

Whisky pioneer The English Distillery is introducing the first sherry matured single malt release to its award-winning core range!

As England’s oldest registered whisky distillery reinforces its mission to create the country’s finest offering of single malt whiskies, and share them with whisky lovers around the world.

Bottled by hand at its Norfolk distillery, The English Sherry Cask is an unpeated single malt whisky, which has been matured from start to finish in the finest PX sherry casks to create a stunning expression that has been well worth the wait.

The new addition will sit alongside The English Original and Smokey

Aromas of rich dark fruits from the sherry-filled casks combine in a nose of raw honey and vanilla, leading to a burst of sweet toffee, cherries and digestives on the palate. The result is a wonderfully balanced and rich whisky that is not outshone by the wood.

Bottled at 46% abv, non chill filtered and natural in colour, this no age statement whisky will join The English Original and The English Smokey to enhance the distillery’s core range.

Founded in 2006 by farmer James Nelstrop to fulfil a lifelong dream, the distillery – guided by the experience of legendary Master Distiller Ian Henderson – began to lay down whiskies in its dunnage warehouses, with the sole aim to make world class single malt whisky.

The whisky is made using barley grown locally and on the Nelstrop family farms. The entire distillation process of milling, mashing, distilling with a pair of traditional and beautiful copper stills, maturing in the finest oak casks and hand bottling – all take place at the distillery.

After a mere 17 years of distilling, we finally have just enough stock to add a Sherry cask matured single malt whisky to our core range.

This is a momentous step for the distillery and a big milestone as we continue to demonstrate the skill of our distillers and the depth of our maturing stock.
– Andrew Nelstrop: Chairman

Available to order now (RRP: £60, 700ml bottle), the new addition will sit alongside The English Original and Smokey (RRP: £47.50 each)

About

The English Distillery is England’s oldest registered whisky distillery. Founded by the Nelstrop family in Norfolk in 2006, the distillery is still independent and creates multi-award-winning whisky from local barley.

The distillery has a unique place in history. In 1901 the last recorded whisky distillery in England swapped from whisky to gin production before being destroyed by fire. This saw the end of whisky distilleries in England until The English Whisky Co. Ltd was granted a license to distil whisky by HMRC. In 2006 it opened the first registered, operational whisky distillery in England for over 100 years.

Our founder James Nelstrop was the young er son of a Lincolnshire farmer. James spent his formative years farming in Lincolnshire before emigrating to Australia, where farms were bigger and opportunities were plentiful. James returned to England in 1976 and went to work the land in Norfolk, Suffolk and Lincolnshire. He also set up farming charities in Russia to improve the agricultural industry as the country emerged from 30 years of communist control before returning to Norfolk.

As James neared retirement, a lifetime’s dream to make whisky became a possibility. The dream had grown from a throwaway comment made by James’ father, who said it was a “shame all this barley has to go to Scotland to be turned into whisky.”

The decision to build the distillery in Norfolk was quick and with only one caveat: The distillery would produce only the very finest single malt whiskies, regardless of the time it took to get there. This mantra has become the foundation of everything that we do at The English Distillery.
The distillery is now led by James’ son Andrew, who continues to follow in his father’s footsteps.

The English Whisky Co Release Another Limited Edition First For England!

May 13, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

This whisky is from the exclusive Founders Private Cellar

This whisky is
from the exclusive Founders Private Cellar

The English Whisky Co. will release a very rare Single Malt Whisky on Thursday 19th May. This whisky is from the exclusive Founders Private Cellar, which only sees casks released on a very occasional basis.

Described by the head distillery as “sublime!”

Described by the head distiller as “sublime!”

This particular Cask, no. 365, is a complete one off. The single malt whisky spent the 1st half of its life maturing in a bourbon cask, which is not unusual but in a very bold move, it was then transferred to a virgin oak cask for the remainder of its big sleep.

The resulting whisky is not only different but was described but David Fitt, the head distiller as “sublime!”

These rare and unusual casks are highly sought after by collectors and drinkers alike as the number of bottles that can be filled from a cask is extremely limited. In this case we will only fill 285 bottles in total.

It is a privilege to have these casks in our private collection and whilst it is my job to ensure the collection is in good order for the next generation, I am always proud when a cask is deemed ideal for bottling and can therefore be shared with the wider whisky community.
– Andrew Nelstrop – distillery owner

Likely Retail Price approx. £175

Tasting notes:

Nose: Freshly baked treacle tart and milk chocolate digestive biscuits. Vanilla, stewed pears and bananas. Woody with hints of honeysuckle, soft leather and liquorice.

Taste: Milk chocolate and vanilla. A hint of golden syrup. Very fruity with an almost herbal note of fresh sage. A lovely long, dry and spicy finish.

A total of 120 cask strength bottles and 500 bottles at 46%abv will be released worldwide.

A total of 120 cask strength bottles and 500 bottles at
46%abv will be released worldwide.

This incredibly rare Single Malt whisky first made an appearance in 2009 but due to the tiny amounts made none has been available since then.

This is only the second ever release of this rich and moorish single malt whisky. A total of 120 cask strength bottles and 500 bottles at 46% abv will be released worldwide.

This wonderfully rich and heavy style of whisky the result of maturation in an Olorrosso Sherry cask.

This bottling of Chapter 10 is a rare occurrence. I have kept an eye on the sleeping casks for a number of years now, waiting for the right moment to release the whisky. This 2nd batch of Chapter 10 is incredibly well balanced and isn’t quite as dry on the pallet as the 1st bottling, which I am sure will be well received by our consumers.
– David Fitt: English Whisky Co head distiller

The English Whisky Co. has had another successful year picking up several awards: It has been awarded 2 Great Taste Gold Awards for it’s Chapter 15 and Nelstrop’s PX. It has also been awarded 15 Liquid Gold awards by Jim Murray as well as being named as producer of European Whisky of the Year 2015.

English Whisky Chapter 10 Tasting notes:

Nose: Quite heavy with raisins and dried fruit. Rich fruit cake, Christmas pudding with wine gums, dates with a hint of marzipan. A delicate waft of aniseed breezes in after a while.

Taste: Again very fruity, rosehip syrup. Citrus fruits. Full bodied and quite chewy with a long, fruity finish. Very dry.

The English Whisky Co release another Limited Edition first for England!

The English Whisky Co release another Limited Edition first for England!

The English Whisky Co will release a Triple Distilled Single Malt Whisky on Thursday 15th October.

This is the 1st Triple Distilled English whisky to be bottled and released in their Chapter Range. A wonderfully light and gentle style of whisky that is normally the preserve of Irish whiskey makers.

Our triple distilled whisky, known as Chapter 17 is a very limited release of 900 bottles from one of our first batches. We wanted to try a triple distilled to see how different it would be from our double distillation whiskies; the result has been a lighter, more delicate whisky that still retains the glorious taste profile normally associated with our whiskies.

We are delighted with the result and look forward to releasing further batches in the years to come.
– Andrew Nelstrop: The English Whisky Co distillery owner

The English Whisky Co. has had another successful year picking up several awards: It has been awarded 2 Great Taste Gold Awards for it’s Chapter 15 and Nelstrop’s PX. It has also been awarded 15 Liquid Gold awards by Jim Murray as well as being named as producer of European Whisky of the Year 2015.

Tasting notes: Triple Distilled Single Malt Whisky

Aroma: Vanilla custard, slightly citrus with a hint of orange, spotted dick and rich dark chocolate. Creamy toffee and butterscotch. Subtle notes of liquorice.

Taste: Vanilla, light citrus fruits. Slightly dry, dark chocolate, light honey. Again the subtle liquorice is there.

The English Whisky Co is a winner with Great Taste!

August 6, 2015 by Gary Leave a Comment

The English Whisky Co is a winner!

The English Whisky Co is a winner!

The world’s most coveted blind-tasted food awards, Great Taste, has just released the Great Taste stars of 2015 and The English Whisky Co is amongst the producers celebrating as its Chapter 15 Single Malt English Whisky and Nelstrop’s PX is now able to proudly carry the little gold and black Great Taste logo.

Nelstrops PX

Nelstrops PX

Judged by over 400 of the most demanding palates belonging to food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs, producers and a host of food writers and journalists, Great Taste is widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers. When a product wears a Great Taste label it carries a badge of honour but more importantly, the Great Taste logo is a signpost to a wonderful tasting product – hundreds of judges have worked tirelessly to discover the very best, through hours and hours of blind-tasting a total of 10,000 different foods and drinks.

“We decided to enter the Great Taste Awards for the first time this year as we recognised the growing recognition of the Great Taste badge by consumers and retailers. We were thrilled to win a 1-star accolade for two of our products, Chapter 15, our best selling peated single malt whisky, which has been aged in bourbon casks. The second accolade went to our Nelstrops Pedro Ximinez liqueur.

The history of this product starts from the casks. We mature some of our fine single malt whiskies in Pedro Ximenez Sherry Casks. These casks are full of beautiful rich dark sherry before we take delivery, so we decided to take the sherry as well as it is too lovely to leave behind. We add some of our single malt to it and leave it in casks to continue maturing. We believe that the resulting drink is a wonderful fortified wine, that makes a superb drink for many occasions. It has a many uses in terms of drinking and cooking, chilled, drunk as a dessert wine and also glorious poured over ice cream. Both products are available for free tastings at the home of English Whisky, St Georges Distillery in Roudham, Norfolk 7 days a week.”

Recognised as a stamp of excellence among consumers and retailers alike, Great Taste values taste above all else, with branding and packaging ignored. Whether it is cheese, ale, steak or chutney being judged, all products are removed from their wrapper, jar or bottle before being tasted. The judges then savour, confer and re-taste to decide which products are worthy of a 1-, 2- or 3-star award.

There were 10,000 Great Taste entries this year and of those products, 130 have been awarded a 3-star, 597 received a 2-star and 2,382 were awarded a 1-star accolade. The panel of judges included Masterchef judge and restaurant critic Charles Campion, TV presenter and cook, Aggie Mackenzie, Great British Bake Off winner, Frances Quinn, Masterchef the Professionals finalist, Adam Handling, food buyers from Harrods, Selfridges, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer, and chefs including James Golding, Chef Director of The Pig hotel group, who have together tasted and re-judged the 3-star winners to finally agree on the 2015 Top 50 Foods, the Golden Fork Trophy winners and the new 2015 Supreme Champion.

Finally on Monday 7 September, at a nail-biting Awards’ Dinner at the Royal Garden Hotel, London, the great and the good from the world of fine food will gather to hear who has won the Golden Fork Awards and the final applause will be reserved for the Great Taste Supreme Champion 2015.

November 5, 2014 by Gary Leave a Comment

Chapter 14

Chapter 14

The English Whisky Co. has collected 15 Liquid Gold’s in Jim Murray’s 2015 Whisky Bible.

Continuing their year on year award winning streak, the company has produced the best whisky in Europe, their Chapter 14, according to Jim Murray, author of the famous Whisky Bible which was released earlier this week.

In what must be a blow to some of the world’s traditional distilling nations The English Whisky Co. not only produced the winning European whisky but also produced a further 14 whiskies that were deemed worthy of the coveted “Liquid Gold” Award which is presented only to whiskies scoring 94 points or higher each year.

Andrew Nelstrop, owner of The English Whisky Co. said, “I am thrilled that our whiskies are getting such recognition.

Our distillers do a tremendous job creating some of the world’s finest whiskies by complete dedication to ensuring perfection is achieved at every point of production, from sourcing the finest barley to bottling the whisky by hand at the distillery”

Chapter 14 is a classic single malt whisky, matured in ex- bourbon casks.
This limited edition whisky is bottled in small batches created form the marriage of just 4 casks for each bottling. Each cask is sampled and chosen by David Fitt, the head distiller, to create a delightfully balanced and gentle whisky full of flavour and character.
Chapter 14 is available at both 46% and cask strength.

About The English Whisky Co.

The Nelstrop family have a 600 year old tradition of growing and processing grain. In 2005 they decided to build a distillery and make their own whisky, this would be England’s first whisky distillery in over 100years. The best barley is grown in Norfolk and the Breckland water is superb.
In December 2006 they were able to make the first 29 barrels of English whisky and in 2007 the distillery was officially opened by HRH Prince Charles.
The English Whisky Company distills four days a week, for 44 weeks of the year, which produces around 150,000 bottles of whisky.

Their whiskies fit into 4 ranges:

Black Range: New to the stable but designed for the Export market and UK multiple retailers. Simpler labelling makes for an easier brand awareness and purchase choice for customers. Available as Classic or Peated in 43%.

Chapter Range: The core range, each chapter is a different style whisky. The label incorporates lots of details from cask types to bottling and distilling dates. Very small batch bottlings.

Founders Private Cellar: Single cask bottlings. When they find a truly remarkable cask, they will consider one of these rare bottlings. Produced in batches of less than 300, these single cask bottlings are drawn straight from the cask and bottled at cask strength. Presented with certificate of authenticity, numbered decanteurs all in a beautiful polished wooden box.

Royal Range: A unique range of bottles produced to commemorate Royal occasions. Highly collectable and sought after.

CHAPTER 16 – PEATED SHERRY CASK

English Whisky have described this as: “Our first release of a peated, sherry cask. This initial release has very light smoke but all the classic flavour and aroma you would expect from a sherry cask.”

Chapter 16, 46 percent

Chapter 16, 46 percent

Tasting Notes for Chapter 16

Nose
I have never been in one, but what I would imagine the reading room of an old fashioned gentlemen’s club to smell like. Old books, soft warm leather, coffee grounds, bitter chocolate, soft aroma’s of cigar smoke. Hints of mint and walnuts. Rich fruits, think ripe dates and sticky prunes.

Palate
Dry, the coffee grounds are there along with the chocolate. Very soft, rich and oily. Light smoke and again the sticky prunes and dates come through. Hints of toffee and ginger spice. There must be a joke here somewhere about having a bit of ginger spice in your mouth but I’ll leave that to others!

Chapter 13 WW1 EDITION

Chapter 13 WW1 EDITION

CHAPTER 13 – WW1 EDITION

In light of the momentous occasion that 2014 signifies – a century since the start of WW1. English Whisky thought this was a date worth noting and so have designed a label, bottle and contents worthy of remembering 1914 and those that fought for us.

The whisky itself has gentle undertones of smoke and an earthiness to it – our way of giving a nod to the battlefields.

The English Whisky Co. are going to donate £2 to the Poppy Appeal for each bottle sold.

The bottling is limited to 1499 bottles.

Tasting Notes for Chapter 13

Nose
Sweet raisins, warm vanilla and slightly spicy. Hints of bread and butter pudding and caramelised sugar. Also a slight savoury and earthy background note.

Palate
Initially dry, then sweet, spicy (think white pepper), malty and oaky. Again the savoury, earthy notes come through. Slight touch of anise along with lovely warm vanilla, just like a vanilla sponge fresh from the oven. Finish is long and the dryness kicks back at the end.

Chapter 13

Chapter 13

A NEW English Single Malt Whisky has been released to CELEBRATE St George’s Day.

Chapter 13, with its unique label created by Emma Garner, winner of a national competition, is reminiscent of the Olympic opening theme and captures a lot of the poignant images associated with “England”.

The release is limited to 1499 bottles.

Chapter 13 – Whisky Tasting Notes (Spring 2014)

Nose: Sweet with hints of raisins, toffee and vanilla. Caramelised demerara sugar (think crème brûlée). Floral with notes of lavender, eucalyptus and pine – like the warm fresh wood smell of a sauna. Hints of dark chocolate, mocha.

Palate: Soft and creamy like a light syrup. Spicy and warming – hints of mixed spice, red liquorice, black pepper and cloves. After swallowing, the finish is long, dry and almost like a light brandy. This whisky really is one to sip and savour!
