Sampling Three Langatun Swedish Single Malt Whiskies – Limited Editions With Unlimited Flavours!

September 28, 2023 by Gary Leave a Comment

THREE NEW Langatun Swiss Single Malt Whiskies to try!

Robert from Highfern.com has kindly sent me THREE NEW Langatun Distillery Swiss Single Malt Whiskies to try!

They are:-

  • Monbazillac Cask Finish
  • Rioja Cask Matured
  • Madeira Cask Finish

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Langatun Monbazillac Cask Finish Swiss Single Malt Whisky (49.12%)

Monbazillac is a wine-growing region in the south-east of France, surrounding several communes around the village of Monbazillac of the same name.

This region is known for its intense and long-lived sweet wines, similar to Sauternes wines. Monbazillac is traditionally made from noble rot grapes of the SŽmillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle varieties, which are harvested by hand.

The Monbazillac Cask Finish is a new bottling in their Cask Finish range. After pre-aging in a French oak Chardonnay cask, the single malt was transferred to a Monbazillac sweet wine cask from France for a further 14 months of maturation.

This whisky was distilled in October 2016 and bottled in January 2023.

The bottling is limited to 473 bottles.

£99.00 from Highfern

Nose: Sweet and fruity with syrupy prunes, port and treacle. Throw in some white wood with hints of cherries and that’s quite a nose!

Palate: Intense sweetness with some citrus, caramel and porty toffee.

Finish: Warm smooth spiciness, a little pepper which develops over time. At the end there’s sweet liquorice and salt.

Overall: This dram develops in the glass really nicely. if you can resist the tempation, it’ll pay to take your time with it and savour the nose and then indulge yourself in the tasting!

Tasting Notes – Langatun Rioja Cask Matured Swiss Single Malt Whisky (49.12%)

The new single cask bottling of Langatun seems at first glance to belong to the series of Langatun Cask Finishes. But on closer inspection, one realizes that this is not a finish, but a 100% cask maturation.

Thus, the Langatun Rioja Cask Matured follows the success of the Langatun “Quinta do Zambujeiro Cask Matured”. These ‘Matured’ bottlings are characterized by an outstanding aroma intensity and give the connoisseur the full dose of wine aromas paired with spicy hints of wood.

The Rioja is a full-blooded Tempranillo from Spain. The barrel itself is lightly toasted and is made of American and French oak.

Distillation date: April 2017
Bottling date: June 2023

The bottling is limited to 367 bottles.

£99.00 from Highfern

Nose: Rich, stewed fruits with apple, vanilla and cane sweetness. There’s also toffee and inviting creamy biscuit in there as well.

Palate: Pastry rich apple pie which has been nicely sweetened with a dry woody counterpoint.

Finish: The dryness continues with some punchy pepper and sweetened fruits to accompany it.

Overall: A drier dram than the other two samples but nicely balanced with fruity sweetness.

Tasting Notes – Langatun Madeira Cask Finish Swiss Single Malt Whisky (49.12%)

Madeira wine may only be produced on the island of Madeira, southwest of Portugal. Similar to port wine, the natural fermentation of Madeira is interrupted after a particular time so that the sugar contained in the must do not ferment completely.

This gives the wine a particularly intense sweetness. What is unusual about the maturation of Madeira is that the barrels used in the traditional process are stored for several months at high heat (up to 75 degrees F / 24C!)

The whisky was previously matured for several years in a Chardonnay cask and was finally matured for 18 months in a Madeira cask, which gives it its spicy character.

Distillation date: March 2016
Bottling date: August 2022

This bottling is limited to 525 bottles.

£99.00 from Highfern

Nose: Forest fruits, peach, apricot, creamy baked biscuits and sticky fruits – WoW!

Palate: Rich, sweet, syrupy prunes with port wine, herbs and vanilla biscuit.

Finish: Very smooth spiciness with a woody finish plus there’s a lovely fruity sweetness running through this tasty dram!

Overall: An inviting mouthfeel to this dram with thick, syrupy fruits and top end spice that is very satisfying!

Sampling Langatun Port Cask Finish Single Malt Whisky – A Real Feast For Those Christmas Taste Buds!

December 9, 2022 by Gary Leave a Comment

Langatun Port Cask Finish Single Malt Whisky

Robert from Highfern.com has kindly sent me a Langatun Distillery sample to try from their range of whiskies!

Limited to just 512 bottles

It is their Port Cask Finish Single Malt Whisky and many thanks to highfern.com (@HighfernLtd) for sending it to me!

The Port Cask Finish is already a classic among the Langatun Cask Finishes. Pre-aging in a Chardonnay cask gives the whisky its delicate sweetness with beautiful vanilla and wood notes. Afterwards, this single malt whisky is transferred to a port cask for two years for a period of post-maturation, the so-called finish.

This allows the whisky to take on the typical fruity aromas and the dried fruits of the port wine come out very nicely. This beautifully rounded, almost six-year-old whisky is limited to just 512 bottles.

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Langatun Port Cask Finish Single Malt Whisky (49.12%)

Distillation date: October 2016
Bottling date: April 2022
Size: 50 cl
r.r.p. £85.98

Nose: Strong port wine notes with cherries, woodiness, orange and other citrus together with menthol and creamy vanilla.

Palate: Plum jam with syrupy glucose, cherry kirsch, liquorice and creamy chocolate.

Finish: Lovely warming, malty spiciness with port wine.

Overall: Luscious, gorgeous dram with exciting fruity flavours – a real feast for those Christmas taste buds!

A real feast for the taste buds!

Sampling Langatun Swiss Malt Whisky: Flavours That Widened My Smile To Maximum!

May 19, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

Two Strengths of Langatun 'Old Deer'

Two Strengths of Langatun ‘Old Deer’

Following last week’s UK launch of Langatun Swiss Single Malt Whisky I’ve been sent a couple of samples of their Old Deer drams.

With a history dating back to the 1860s, Hans Baumberger, grandson of the original founder Jakob Baumberger, reopened the Langatun Distillery in 2007. Imported by Angels’ Nectar proprietor Highfern Ltd, initially four triple distilled single malt bottlings from Langatun are being offered.

Old Deer is the distillery’s classic single malt, distilled from un-peated barley, fermented with an English stout yeast, and matured in sherry and chardonnay casks.

Bottled after six years maturation, Old Deer is offered at sipping strength of 40% and cask proof of 62.1% Vol.

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Langatun ‘Old Deer’ Swiss Single Malt (40%)

Nose: Sweet, fruity tropical mix, pineapples, green apples and honeyed caramel – very thick and lush!

Palate: Again, sweet, fruity tropical mix on the tongue, just like it says on the nose!

Finish: Quite a dry finish that pulls at the tastebuds. With a nice mix of spice, grapefruit and ongoing sweetness.

Overall: A lovely dram, flavoursome and full of character. But … I’ve been spoilt as outlined below …

Tasting Notes – Langatun ‘Old Deer’ Swiss Single Malt (62.1%)

Nose: That’s some alcohol! Caramel but less sweet with alcohol soaked apples.

Palate: Mmm … very sweet and thick mouthfeel, fruity tropical mix on the tongue but much more acute Syrupy caramel and Xmas cake mix – all soaked in alcohol!

Finish: Hot! Spicy finish with that tanin dryness as before but not so pronounced. The sweetness tempers the hot alcohol fire as it attempts to numb the lips!

Overall: That’s one nice dram! The 40% is good but at this strength the brakes are released and the flavours are released to invade your senses!

If you can, go for this one – Yummy flavours and a delivery to the tastebuds that widened my smile to maximum!

Many thanks to Robert from Highfern Ltd for sending the samples!

‘Whisky for the gods…’ Arrives In The UK!

The Old Bear Cask Proof expression

The Old Bear Cask Proof expression

Old Deer is the distillery’s classic single malt

Old Deer is the distillery’s classic single malt

Langatun Single Malt Whisky, from Switzerland, of which the Old Bear Cask Proof expression has been described by Jim Murray in his renowned guide The Whisky Bible, as ‘Whisky for the gods…’, is now available in the UK for the first time.

Bottled after six years maturation, Old Deer is offered at sipping strength of 40% and cask proof of ∼62% Vol.

Old Bear, named as a tribute to the family’s former brewery, which had a bear as its emblem, is the distillery’s smoky offering. Distilled from peated malted barley and intriguingly matured in former Chateauneuf-du-Pape casks, again for six years.

Like Old Deer, Old Bear is offered at 40%, and cask proof of ∼62.5% Vol.

For a chance to taste Langatun, Robert Ransom, from Highfern Ltd, will be sampling at The Whisky Exchange’s Covent Garden store (2 Bedford Street) on the afternoon of Friday the 13th of May (3pm to 7pm.)

Langatun is also available from Drinkfinder, Hedonism Wines, Lincoln Whisky Shop, Master of Malt, and Shop4Whisky.
