Sampling ‘Angels’ Nectar Cairngorms 2nd. Edition – A Dram Of Two Halves – But A Perfect Match!

December 17, 2020 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Angels are supporting the Cairngorms Trust!

Grantown-on-Spey based Highfern Ltd have made a donation to the Cairngorms Trust of £1230, raised from sales of the Angels’ Nectar Cairngorms Edition, their Speyside Single Cask Scotch Whisky.
This donation will be used by the Cairngorms Trust for environmental and community projects in the Cairngorms National Park.

Cairngorms 2nd Edition

The Angels’ Nectar Cairngorms Edition, a Single Cask Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky, was released by Highfern Ltd in the summer in partnership with the Cairngorms Trust. Whilst the cask is now more or less sold out, a few bottles of this limited edition are still available from the Balliefurth Farm Shop and The Whisky Castle.

Following the success of the project, Angels’ Nectar have announced the release of their Cairngorms 2nd Edition. Whilst every single cask is different, like the previous release this is an 11 years old single cask which has been bottled at 46% and at natural colour, and as before distilled at a speyside distillery in the Cairngorms National Park.

This exclusive dram has an inviting sweet nose with hints of vanilla fudge and floral notes, which opens on the taste to reveal more sweetness, brandy butter and dried tropical fruit. Thanks to the Angels’ share, the cask has given just 146 bottles.

As before a donation from each bottle sold of the Angels’ Nectar Cairngorms 2nd Edition will go towards the Cairngorms Trust, whose vision is to encourage sustainable and community led development, which enhances wildlife conservation, outdoor recreation and cultural heritage in the Cairngorms National Park.

Nancy Chambers and Robert Ransom

We are absolutely delighted that Angels’ Nectar are continuing their support to environmental and community projects around the Cairngorms National Park with the release of a second cask of the Cairngorms Edition.

Hopefully this will help ensure all drams arrive in time!

Robert from Highfern has very kindly sent me a sample (Cheers Robert!)

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes: Angels’ Nectar Cairngorms 2nd. Edition – Single Cask Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (46%)

Nose: Quite buttery with soft toffee, vanilla and white wood. Fresh apple grow and grow and there’s even a little citrusy lime! – It’s a lovely gentle nose that gets more and more tropical the longer it sits in the glass!

Palate: Creamy vanilla toffee with accompanying sweetness coupled with fresh apples and citrus – very fresh and light.

Finish: Gentle spice that blends with the sweeter flavours. This eventually takes over to release a powerful, long, peppery, chilli finish with tanin dryness at the end.

Overall: This dram grows on me as I sip!

It’s a balance of two halves with a refreshing first-half followed by a more fiery, punchy second-half.

A perfect match!

Many thanks to highfern.com (@angelsnectar) for sending me the sample!

Angels’ Nectar ‘Islay’ Edition Awarded Two Stars In The Great Taste Awards!

September 23, 2020 by Gary Leave a Comment

Angels awarded Great Taste stars!

Great Taste (greattasteawards.co.uk), the stamp of excellence for food and drink in the UK, has announced its stars of 2020.

Out of over 12000 entries from more than 100 different countries, Grantown-on-Spey based Highfern Ltd has been awarded a 2-star Great Taste award, for their Angels’ Nectar Islay Edition, the criteria for which is ‘above and beyond delicious’.

Launched last year the Angels’ Nectar Islay Edition is an Islay Single Malt bottled at 47% and at natural colour by Highfern Ltd and retails for around £49.50.

Launched last year the Angels’ Nectar Islay Edition is an Islay Single Malt bottled at 47% and at natural colour by Highfern Ltd.

We love the very pale, lemon-gold colour. Fantastic smokey-bacon, dry woodsmoke, subtle caramel aroma, with pine and leather notes. The palate is bright and energetic, the nose follows well – that woodsmoke lingers long. Subtly medicinal finish, all brilliantly in balance with a malty, cereal note. Citrus peel on the finish. There is a level of complexity and balance here that deserves an award.
– The Great Taste judges

Judged by 144 of the most discerning palates, belonging to food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs, buyers, retailers and producers, as well as food writers and journalists, Great Taste is the most coveted of awards for the speciality food and drink sector.

As well as a badge of honour, the unmistakeable black and gold Great Taste label is a signpost to an outstanding product, which has been discovered through hours and hours of blind tasting.

Our intention with Angels’ Nectar is to showcase different styles of Scotch Whisky, with a series of small batch releases. It’s wonderful that our Islay Edition has received this recognition, based on taste alone, from the most important awards scheme for the speciality food and drink sector.

– Robert Ransom: Angels’ Nectar founder

Great Taste values taste above all else, with no regard for branding and packaging

Great Taste values taste above all else, with no regard for branding and packaging. Whether it is waffles, whitebait or whisky being judged, all are removed from their packaging before being tasted blind.

The judges then savour, confer and re-taste to decide which products are worthy of a 1-, 2- or 3-Star Great Taste award. Despite the additional logistical challenges imposed this year due to lockdown, Great Taste adapted their processes to remote and socially distanced judging sessions, whilst ensuring that their robust judging standards were maintained.

There were 12,777 entries into Great Taste this year and of those products, 205 have been awarded a 3-star, 1,294 received a 2-star and 3,818 were awarded a 1-star accolade.

The panel of judges this year included; cook, writer and champion of sustainable food, Melissa Hemsley, cook, writer, stylist and voice of modern vegetarian cooking, Anna Jones, celebrated Spanish chef, José Pizarro, Kavi Thakrar from Dishoom, food writer and cook, Xanthe Clay, and baker and author, Martha Collison, as well as food buyers from Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason and Waitrose.

Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes: Angels’ Nectar Cairngorms Edition – Single Cask Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (46%)

Nose: Honey sweetness, popcorn, red and ginger wine. After a while there’s tropical fruits.

Palate: Syrupy, light, tropical fruits with a vanilla sweetness. Very nice!

Finish: Highly spiced with white wood and the tropical fruit continues. The fiery spice is long with a dry grapefruit finish.

Overall: Quite a peppery punch to this dram – a real surprise!
This is quite a contrast to the sweet tropical flavours that dominate at the beginning.

I really enjoyed this dram and I think it’ll soon sell-out – which is good news for the Cairngorms and an excellent way to help the environment!

Angels' Nectar toasts shortlist success again!

Angels’ Nectar toasts shortlist success again!

The Rich Peat Edition of Angels’ Nectar Blended Malt Scotch Whisky, from Grantown-on-Spey based Highfern Ltd, has been shortlisted in the 2016 Highland and Islands Food and Drink Awards, for the Best Drink Award.

I sampled it here and enjoyed it immensely!

The Rich Peat Edition of Angels' Nectar Blended Malt Scotch Whisky

The Rich Peat Edition of Angels’ Nectar Blended Malt Scotch Whisky

The Highlands & Islands Food & Drink Awards are now in their 12th year and celebrate the best of food and drink from across the Highlands and Islands and the Cairngorms National Park.

To be shortlisted for the second year running is a fantastic endorsement from the Highlands and Islands Food and Drink Awards for our fledgling whisky business.

Indicative of the interest in our new Rich Peat Edition of Angels’ Nectar, amongst others we have shipped export orders to the Netherlands, Germany, South Korea and Sweden.
– Robert Ransom: Highfern founder

Inspired by the Angels’ share, the traditional name given to the whisky lost to evaporation during the maturation of Scotch Whisky, the Rich Peat Edition of Angels’ Nectar Blended Malt Scotch Whisky has been created from a selection of Highland malt whiskies, and oozes a welcoming peat smoke, with hints of toffee apple and dark chocolate. With its innovative ‘Angels within Angel’ graphic design (which won the 2015 Scottish Creative Award for Illustration), Angels’ Nectar presents a much-loved story from whisky folklore in a contemporary fashion.

Judging for the awards took place at the Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness with a panel of judges examining and tasting the entries. The judges included representatives from Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Scotland Food & Drink, and the current Ambassadors of the Year, Jill and Callum Clark of Connage Highland Dairy.

The winners will be announced on Friday 21st of October at a glittering awards ceremony at the Kingsmills Hotel, hosted by comedian and broadcaster, Fred MacAulay.

Sampling The Angels’ Nectar ‘Rich Peat’ Edition – Smokin!

March 2, 2016 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Rich Peat Edition

The Rich Peat Edition

Robert from Angels’ Nectar Whisky recently sent me a sample of their new Rich Peat Edition Scotch Whisky. Created from a selection of Highland malts and bottled at a punchy 46%.

Like the First Edition, the Rich Peat Edition bottle features an Angel shaped fractal design

Like the First Edition, the Rich Peat Edition bottle features an Angel shaped fractal design

I reviewed their first offering a year ago and I was mightily impressed so I was well chuffed to be offered a chance to savour their latest offering.

The Angels’ Nectar Rich Peat Edition has been released by Highfern Ltd, a young drinks business founded by Robert Ransom and based in Grantown-on-Spey.

Commenting on the release Robert said; “Its great to see our range of malts expand. International interest in the Rich Peat Edition has also been particularly exciting.”

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Angels Nectar Blended Malt Scotch Whisky – Rich Peat Edition ( 46% )

Like the original Angels Nectar, the Rich Peat Edition is again, a very pale dram.

Nose: Smokey and peaty with an inviting bonfire aroma that seems to soak into your tastebuds! It develops into rich fruity sweetness and thick treacle.

Palate: Well balanced peat n’ smoke with the spicy sweetness of stewed fruit and dark chocolate.

Finish: The sweet fruit pulls it’s weight and the spicy peat goes on and on coupled with tastes of tobacco and a little tanin grapefruit.

A blended peaty malt that doesn’t fail to deliver. I love the smokey, bonfire aromas and tastes and the rich fruit and chocolate make a nice counter flavour. Highly recommended!

Many thanks to Robert and the team at Angels Nectar for sending the sample!

No, it’s because I recently received a sample of Angels’ Nectar, a new Blended Malt Scotch Whisky, inspired by the Angels’ Share, which has been launched by Robert Ransom.

An unknown fact (to me) and one that you can use to impress your workmates is that at any one time, there are an estimated twenty million casks maturing across Scotland!

In addition, they are all being exposed to what is affectionately called “the Angels’ Share”, the evaporation from casks that occurs during maturation.

The Angels take their pick; enjoying some casks more than others, whilst hard working distillers watch their efforts disappear.

The Angels’ Nectar Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is a re-creation of the Angels’ Share, bottled for whisky drinkers to savour.

Carefully created from a selection of Speyside and Highland malt whiskies, Angels’ Nectar Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is unusually bottled at natural colour.

The label for this new whisky brand features a striking fractal design, with an Angel shaped ethereal mist, within which, a series of Angels can be seen enjoying their share.

The Angels’ Nectar Blended Malt Scotch Whisky has been released by Highfern Ltd, a new drinks business founded by Robert Ransom.

Commenting on the release Robert said; “I have worked in the whisky trade for ten years, and during that time I have enjoyed giving many distillery tours and tastings.
Early on I noticed any mention of the Angels’ Share always made guests smile. The seed was sown; What if one could bottle the Angels’ Share? It would be the ultimate Blended Malt, and Angels’ Nectar is Highfern’s attempt to do just that.”

So, what did I think?

Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Angels Nectar Blended Malt Scotch Whisky ( 40% )

As stated, the whisky is bottled at natural colour so expect a very pale dram indeed!

Nose: Citrus and fruit abound with a little wood. A hint of vanilla and sugar tops it off.

Palate: A dram that is light on the tongue with sweet sugary fruits and a zingy lemon tang.

Finish: Quite a short finish, the sweetness is complemented with a little grapefruit creating a dry tanin mouthfeel. This is blended with a gentle tobacco and spice finish.

Overall: An excellent, easy drinking blended malt. Light and easy on the palate and very much suitable for drinking at any time of the day.

A blended malt that will appeal to most palates without putting off those who prefer more ‘robust’ flavours. A lovely concept and one which I am happy to support. In short, those Angels will be sad not to get their hands on this fine dram!

Many thanks to Robert and the team at Angels Nectar for sending the samples!
