Powers Irish Whiskey Launches Brand-New Permanent Expression – “Powers John’s Lane Cask Strength!”

September 5, 2023 by Gary Leave a Comment

Powers John’s Lane Cask Strength!

Proudly honouring the history of Powers Irish Whiskey, Irish Distillers is excited to announce a new, permanent expression to the Powers family, Powers John’s Lane Cask Strength!

Launching 12 years after the introduction of Powers John’s Lane whiskey, this twelve-year-old cask strength edition will be batch-released each year.

A celebration of the 18th and 19th century heritage of John’s Lane Distillery when Powers whiskey was sold straight from the barrel at cask strength, the higher abv, 57.8% in the initial 2023 release, amplifies the much loved full bodied character of the original, reaching new flavour heights.

Born from the same meticulous attention to detail that created Powers John’s Lane whiskey, the distillers at Midleton Distillery in Cork have crafted Powers John’s Lane Cask Strength, a highly anticipated release.

Characterised by soft pot still spices that are integral to the flavour profile of the Powers brand, the intensity in the cask strength edition is magnified to create a wonderfully complex liquid. An initial medley of rich aromatic woodland notes intertwines with worn leather and tobacco, before cocoa, treacle toffee, crushed black peppercorn, and dried herbs assail the senses.

Bold pot still spices mingle with creamy vanilla, manuka honey and warming notes of nutmeg on the palate, before a wonderful spice-laden finish of toasted oak coated in a gentle honey sweetness.

Powers John’s Lane Cask Strength will be available on general release from 2 October!

A brand of firsts, Powers whiskey continually challenged the old way of doing things and advocated careful experimentation throughout the years.

With a rich heritage that goes back to its establishment in 1791, John’s Lane Distillery’s well-earned reputation is brought back to centre stage with the launch of this new permanent cask strength Powers expression.
– Eric Ryan: Powers Distiller

Powers John’s Lane Cask Strength will be available exclusively at the Palace Bar in Dublin until its general release on 2 October, when it will be available in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Dublin Airport and online at MidletonDistilleryCollection.com at RRP €90.

Powers Whiskey is available to buy from these Merchants:-

Tasting notes:

Aroma: An intense medley of woodland aromas intertwined with worn leather and tobacco. Layers of charred wood and cocoa meet with concentrated treacle toffee while the pot still spices continue to build towards additional notes of black peppercorn and dried herbs.

Taste: Rich pot still spice facets trailed by creamy vanilla, manuka honey and dried apricot. Additional nutty notes of freshly grated nutmeg work in harmony with the sweet wood-derived elements and bold spice intensity.

Finish: Toasted oak wrapped with honey sweetness that gently recedes, leaving the distillate-led nature of the spirit to endure until the end.

An Interview With Carol Quinn – Archivist For Irish Distillers!

March 6, 2020 by Gary Leave a Comment

Carol Quinn – Archivist For Irish Distillers

To help celebrate International Women’s Day this Sunday, March 8th. (@womensday) I was honoured recently to sit down and have a chat with Carol Quinn – Archivist For Irish Distillers.

International Women’s Day (@womensday), this Sunday, March 8th. is a “global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.”

So to help celebrate I was honoured recently to sit down and have a chat with Carol Quinn – Archivist For Irish Distillers – and general trailblazer in the Drinks industry!

These are the questions I asked Carol:-

Does your archive throw up any interesting things about Ireland’s history in parallel with your history?

The distillery is very much part of Ireland’s life and society and changes in the country are reflected in the distillery.

Two particular times spring to mind:-

1. 1916 – Dublin

The Easter Risings saw hand to hand fighting on the streets of Dublin and Jameson distillery being situated on a major route was witness to all this.

As was the norm then, no-one got paid if you didn’t work. One consequence was that even though there was grain in the distillery to feed the horses, they were starving as no-one was there. Fortunately, the workers asked and were allowed in to feed them.

2. World War 2
Called ‘The Emergency’ in Ireland as the country was neutral but this didn’t mean that the effects of war were not felt.
There were No imports or exports so food was scarce, expensive and money was short, again, because no-one got paid if you didn’t work.

Powers Distillery in Dublin had a soil roof to control humidity so it was utilised by planting crops on the roof to produce food which was then used to help feed the population.

Similarly, in Cork a large ornamental garden was ploughed up for food.

Carol reveals the connection between a notebook & some grain!

If you could choose only one, what would your favourite item in the archive be?

Well that can change on a daily basis! But one of them is the Pocket notebook belonging to John Jameson II – the founders son.

It contains Recipes for whiskey which he would have distilled himself with details of daily mash fills.
But the book was in a poor condition so was sent for conservation.

It was while this work was being carried out that trapped grains were discovered in the notebook binding which gave us a real connection to the history of the distillery and felt like a tangible connection to the family tree of their whiskies.

We don’t try and recreate the past with these documents. Instead they serve to provide inspiration for possible products in the future. And may do so yet again!

Is there something you wish you had in your archives?

A person, any person, though not anyone who was famous!

Ideally someone from the 1880’s which was the peak of whiskey production in Ireland.

It would be great to find out what it was like, the atmosphere.

We have a wealth of written records but no personal histories.

So, for the benefit of future archivists, Carol has started an oral history programme to capture the memories, impressions and personal perspectives of former workers.

How do you think future archivists will look back on today’s whiskey business?

I feel were entering a second golden age for Irish Whiskey.

I think they would be astonished at the speed of change that’s taking place in the Industry at this time including new entities, new distilleries and increased choice for consumers.

And I don’t see why Irish Whiskey can’t overtake Scotch Whisky!

There are now 30 distilleries in Ireland (compared to the 1970’s when there were just 2 – Midleton & Bushmills.)

Things started to change in 1966 when Jameson, Powers and Cork distillers combined to form Irish distillers because they decided they never wanted to give up Irish Whiskey as it symbolises everything thats good about Ireland and it’s culture.

It is indeed exciting times!

Carol’s favourite Whiskey? Read on!

Of course my last question had to be …

What is your favourite Whiskey?

It’s Powers Gold Label with soda water.

On the recent product re-design for the Powers range I was involved with going through the history of powers and the distinctive diamond symbol jumped out at us.

The symbol was so iconic that in correspondance they didn’t even say Powers – they just used the diamond symbol!

Many thanks to Carol for taking the time!

What is International Women’s Day?

International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

No one government, NGO, charity, corporation, academic institution, women’s network or media hub is solely responsible for International Women’s Day. Many organizations declare an annual IWD theme that supports their specific agenda or cause, and some of these are adopted more widely with relevance than others. International Women’s Day is a collective day of global celebration and a call for gender parity.

International Women’s Day is all about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action – whatever that looks like globally at a local level. But one thing is for sure, International Women’s Day has been occurring for well over a century – and continue’s to grow from strength to strength. Learn about the values that guide IWD’s ethos.

Powers Irish Whiskey Starts The Decade With A New Look!

January 9, 2020 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Powers Repack Family Line up

Powers Gold Label

Powers Irish Whiskey, which is made by Irish Distillers in Midleton Distillery, has unveiled a bold new bottle design for its range of premium Irish whiskeys. Debuting on core expression Powers Gold Label in the USA from March 2020, the dynamic new look is set to attract a new generation of drinkers to one of Ireland’s most loved whiskey brands.

The design features a new bottle shape which has been inspired by the distinctive pot still silhouette from the brand’s historical home at John’s Lane Distillery. Another striking aspect of the new design is the label which is styled on the iconic Powers ‘diamond P’ – one of the first ever trademarks registered in Ireland and a link to the legacy of Powers and Irish whiskey history all over Ireland.

Each whiskey in the Powers range is presented with a label in a different colour to bring to life its unique story; Powers Gold Label in red, an homage to the original red Powers diamond marque; Powers Three Swallow in blue, a nod to the feathers of the graceful bird; and Powers John’s Lane Release in metallic ink, to reflect the industrial innovation that the Powers family demonstrated at the original distillery established in 1791 on John’s Lane, Dublin.

Powers John Lane

Powers sense of identity has always focused on the diamond P; that became very clear to me as I worked my way through the historical archive. The diamond P was everywhere; on the casks, stationary, on bills and receipts, emblazoned on everything that left the distillery, and notably on the wonderful Powers mirrors that still hang in Ireland’s pubs today.

Workers at the old John’s Lane distillery even took to wearing a diamond P pin on their lapel, such was their pride to be part of the Powers family. For me it’s wonderful to see the diamond P front and centre on this new label, symbolising all the history of this great whiskey since 1791.
– Carol Quinn: Archivist at Irish Distillers

Following the launch of the new-look Powers Gold Label in March 2020, the new design will be introduced across Powers Three Swallow and Powers John’s Lane from mid-2020 in the USA and the rest of the world from late-2020. In Ireland, Powers Three Swallow and Powers John’s Lane will be released in March 2020, with Powers Gold Label to be reviewed in due course.

Powers Three Swallow

Powers has been famous for its bold taste profile and character since the family distillery was established in 1791. We are excited to introduce this new look to the world and inspire a new generation with the unique history and personality of Powers.

At Irish Distillers, we have pride in Powers as one of the world’s leading Irish whiskeys and we welcome this dynamic new chapter for the brand as we seek to continue the Irish whiskey renaissance around the world.
– Conor McQuaid: Chairman and CEO of Irish Distillers

New packaging for Powers Irish Whiskey underpins recent innovation for the brand as it seeks to reach and inspire whiskey drinkers including; the release of Powers Old Fashioned, the brand’s first ever pre-mixed classic cocktail; and the Powers Quarter; a collaboration between six Dublin bars to tell the story of Powers and its illustrious Dublin history.

Powers Irish Whiskey Gets Old Fashioned!

May 22, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

Powers Old Fashioned. Initially launching in Ireland from the end of May

Powers Irish Whiskey, which is made by Irish Distillers in Midleton Distillery, has unveiled a brand-new look and its first ever pre-mixed classic cocktail, Powers Old Fashioned.

The contemporary new bottle features a new label styled on the classic diamond ‘P’

Initially launching in Ireland from the end of May, the innovative new release is set to tap into the growing appetite for whiskey-based cocktails, recruit cocktail drinkers to the Irish whiskey category and inspire a new generation with the bold character of Powers.

Powers Old Fashioned is crafted from a combination of the classic Powers Gold Label Irish Whiskey, sugar syrup and bitter herbs flavouring. The result is a smooth, low-sugar (6g of sugar per 100ml (3g of sugar per serving) ready-made classic cocktail that is best served over ice with a twist of orange peel over the glass.

Powers Old Fashioned is bottled at 38% ABV and is available in 500ml bottles through key retailers in the on-trade and off-trade, including SuperValu, Tesco Ireland and Dunnes Stores at the RRP of €29.99.

The first-ever bottled classic cocktail under the Powers marque is presented in a befitting, bold new look that balances modern cues with the rich heritage of Powers, dating back to 1791.

The contemporary new bottle features a new label styled on the classic diamond ‘P’ signifier, which was one of the first ever trademarks in Ireland, registered by the Powers family in 1877.

Powers Old Fashioned is a premium and modern ready-to-serve take on the classic cocktail that is set to tap into the growing interest in Irish whiskey and cocktails among 30-40 year olds in Ireland.

A careful balance of the rich history of Powers with an eye on the future, we are confident that the refreshing ritual of ‘Ice, Pour, Twist’ will appeal to whiskey fans and the cocktail curious alike who are looking for simple and convenient ways to create new Irish whiskey experiences at home or in their local pub.

We’ll be monitoring the progress of Powers Old Fashioned in Ireland ahead of plans for a wider roll-out across other key Powers and Irish whiskey markets in the future.

New Look For Irish Whiskey

September 4, 2013 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Powers Gold Label Bottle

The Powers Gold Label Bottle

Irish Distillers has unveiled a new look and line-up for its popular Powers range including the addition of a new Single Pot Still expression, Powers Signature Release, which will be available in Ireland and the USA from September 2013.

There is also new packaging and a new recipe for its seminal Powers Gold Label.

Powers Signature Release is the second Single Pot Still whiskey to be added to the Powers family, following the release of the ultra-premium Powers John’s Lane Release in May 2011.
The new expression bears the hallmark spicy flavours that are typical of the Powers whiskeys, with black pepper, honey, vanilla and berries in abundance. Using the signature Powers pot still distillate, it has been matured mainly in American bourbon barrels with the subtle inclusion of whiskey matured in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks.

Powers Signature Release was introduced to whiskey fans for the first time in the US at WhiskyFest Chicago in April this year and will be on shelf in the USA and Ireland from September.

The new-recipe, new-look Powers Gold Label has taken inspiration from the brand’s history and features a higher strength abv of 43.2% and will be non chill filtered, allowing the spicy pot still character of the whiskey to come to the fore. Being able to release a non chill filtered whiskey at strength lower than the industry norm of 46% is directly related to the proprietary triple distillation process which Powers uses.

The Powers Signature Release Bottle

Anna Malmhake, CEO at Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard, says: “Powers has been long been regarded by whiskey lovers throughout Ireland and the world as the ‘whiskey drinker’s whiskey’ and recognised for its traditional, full-bodied pot still flavours. With demand for Irish whiskey now stronger than ever, it’s an exciting time of opportunity for the category in general and for Powers in particular. The timing is ideal to harness the tremendous reputation of Powers and to showcase its quality to an ever increasing number of super-premium whiskey drinkers.”

“With whiskey drinkers increasingly prioritising craft and quality in their purchasing decisions, we see excellent growth potential for the super-premium segment of the Irish Whiskey category so we are confident that the new Powers range will be a big hit for discerning whiskey drinkers, as they continue to explore and discover the many great whiskeys that Irish Distillers’ extensive portfolio has to offer.”

The introduction of the new-look Powers range is the latest in a series of innovations from Irish Distillers, owner of the world’s leading Irish whiskey brand, Jameson. May 2011 saw the release of its award winning range of Single Pot Still whiskeys and a subsequent release of numerous other whiskeys reaffirming the company’s commitment to growing the Irish Whiskey category and to improving consumer awareness and understanding of the excellent quality of Irish Whiskeys at all price points.

TASTING NOTES:

Powers Gold Label

Nose:
Aromatic Pot Still spices, soft cinnamon, a tincture of clove oil and a dusting of white pepper in balance with russet apples and ripe pears, all on a background of charred oak.

Taste:
The rich Pot Still spices, cinnamon, green peppers and a touch of nutmeg combine effortlessly with orchard fruits, vanilla and toasted oak. All laid upon a crisp barley core.

Finish:
The lingering Pot Still oils and spices slowly fade leaving the wood and the barley competing for the last word.

Powers Signature Release

Nose:
Opens with the undeniable aromatics of traditional Pot Still Irish Whiskey. Triple distillation in Copper Pot Stills and years of maturation in top grade oak casks produce the crisp fresh herbal notes of garden mint and bergamot, balanced with more robust spicy touches of nutmeg, fig and black peppercorns. The sweet vanilla notes are laid upon a background of Charred American Oak and the subtle use of ex-Oloroso sherry butts, from Iberian oak, brings some succulent berry fruits to the mix.

Taste:
The initial mouth coating, typical of Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey, is succulently sweet with vanilla and leads into the warming flavours of the charred oak casks. Hints of black liquorice and cinnamon slowly allow some fruit to appear – melons, green apples and pears. Then, as the richness subsides, there is a crisp flinty acknowledgement of the barley.

Finish:
Long and wonderfully complex. An unhurried journey through an impressive flavour spectrum.
