SMWS 77.60: “A Feather Bed In A Gentleman’s Study”

Sampling The SMWS December Outturn
– Just In Time To Welcome Rudolph!
– Ho! Ho! Ho!

Time for No.3 of The Scotch Malt Whisky Societies’ December Outturn. This one is their 77.60: “A Feather Bed In A Gentleman’s Study”.

The 77.60 is a Highland dram with 264 bottles being released – but remember – SMWS bottlings don’t hang around for long!

The SMWS (@SMWSUK) has very kindly sent me a sample to try – thanks SMWS!

So, what did I think?

Tasting Notes – SMWS 77.60: “A Feather Bed In A Gentleman’s Study” (59.6%)

A Highland Dram (Glen Ord / Glenordie Distillery) 10 years old, distilled on 7th. April 2009. Matured in a Refill ex-bourbon hogshead.
First released: 6th. December 2019.
264 bottles.
(70 BOTTLES IN STOCK AT PRESENT!)

Nose: Big white wood hit with citrus, particularly lemon. Scents of mint and some nice refreshing apple and tempting marzipan.

Palate: Dark chocolate, apple and vanilla caramel – lovely indeed!

Finish: Chilli spice with hints of black pepper. Tasty, rich dark chocolate with a hint of sweet orange.

Overall: The hot spice will certainly warm you up on a cold day! It’s pretty punchy but it goes down nicely with the sweet chocolate!
Water smoothes it all out beautifully but … I’m not sure I would.
I think I’d miss the fire-breathing dragon too much!

Sampling The SMWS 6.34: “Boundless Intemperance”!

Sampling The SMWS 6.34: “Boundless Intemperance”!

Sampling The SMWS December Outturn
– Just In Time For Crimbo!
– Ho! Ho! Ho!

No.2 of The Scotch Malt Whisky Societies’ selection of recently released drams – the SMWS December Outturn – is their 6.34: “Boundless Intemperance”.

The 6.34 is a Speyside dram with 321 bottles being released – but remember – SMWS bottlings don’t hang around for long!

The SMWS (@SMWSUK) has very kindly sent me a sample to try – thanks SMWS!

So, what did I think?

Tasting Notes – SMWS 6.34: “Boundless Intemperance” (58.6%)

A Speyside Dram (Glen Deveron [Macduff] Distillery) 12 years old, distilled on 29th. August 2006. Matured in a Refill ex-bourbon hogshead.
First released: 6th. December 2019.
321 bottles.
(78 BOTTLES IN STOCK AT PRESENT!)

Nose: Quite oaty with a vanilla honeyness. A little wood polish and some green apples. There’s also scents of woodland herbs maybe?

Palate: Oily and a rich vanilla syrup plus there’s some banana in there as well.

Finish: Smooth, sweet finish with some tongue zingy spice – quite dry with a grapefruit and tannin finish. It’s pretty short as well. Adding water brings out more grapefruit and lemon and dulls the spice – which is not great really.

Overall: A pleasant dram, jolly enough on a cold Winters night. Adding water doesn’t really give much to the flavour.

Sampling The SMWS 29.266: “Converting Vegetarians” – Punchy But With A Longing To Go Back For More!

December 6, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

SMWS 29.266: “Converting Vegetarians”

Sampling The SMWS December Outturn
– Just In Time For Christmas!
– Ho! Ho! Ho!

It’s that time of the year again! No, not time to disassemble the sprouts into their molecular component parts by over-cooking.

Yes, it’s The Scotch Malt Whisky Societies’ selection of recently released drams!

The outturn is released today and I’m going to be sampling each one in turn – my own mini-advent calendar! This particular sample of the SMWS December Outturn is their 29.266: “Converting Vegetarians”.

The 29.266 is an Islay dram with 249 bottles being released – but remember – SMWS bottlings don’t hang around for long – I guess a lot of people are waiting to jam their Xmas stockings with these beauties!

The SMWS (@SMWSUK) has very kindly sent me a sample to try – thanks SMWS!

So, what did I think? Well here you go!

Tasting Notes – SMWS 29.266: “Converting Vegetarians” (60.9%)

A Islay Dram (Laphroaig Distillery) 8 years old, distilled on 7th. April 2011. Matured in a 2nd. fill ex-bourbon barrel.
First released: 6th. December 2019.
249 bottles.

Nose: Peated smoke, sweet white wood with coastal aromas and that familiar antispectic aroma – so Laphroaig! Charred wood comes through after moments in time …

Palate: Intensely sweet with a firm peat overtone that swiftly mutes the sugar and pushes forth a peppery spice that takes your taste buds away!

Finish: Savoury and morish with a long, long finish – longer than an Island coastline. It leaves a warming spice at the back of your throat. There’s a touch of tannin and a longing to go back for just one more sip…

It’s punchy but with kid gloves on. Adding water smoothes it out no end but your senses will still know it’s been there!

Overall: If you like Laphroaig you’re gonna’ love this!

If you don’t, then maybe you should give this classic peat another try – and give it time, after all you’ll have time-a-plenty while the sprouts are cooking – it’s well worth the effort!

Sampling The Whisky Exchange Black Friday Malt 2019 – Patience Required – But The Wait Is Certainly Worth It!

November 28, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Whisky Exchange Black Friday Malt 2019!

An Exclusive limited edition 21 year old whisky for
Black Friday!

Set your alarm clocks and get a good nights sleep tonight!

Only 1,800 bottles available!

Why?

Because at 06.00 GMT on Friday 29th. November The Whisky Exchange are releasing their Exclusive limited edition 21 year old whisky for Black Friday!

Early birdness is a must though as previous editions have sold out VERY quickly, hence the alarm clocks and an early night!

This one-off single malt (limited to just 1,800 bottles) has been bottled exclusively for The Whisky Exchange from a handful of outstanding casks of whisky distilled at a secret distillery – and at a great value-for-money price.

“Founded in 1810, this mystery whisky-maker sits between Forres and Elgin in Speyside, and is known for making a light and elegant style of whisky which is rarely seen as a single malt.”
– The Whisky Exchange

Way more fun than any Black Friday event in the known universe(!) this one is a genuine never-to-be-repeated purchase of the year!

The Whisky Exchange has kindly sent me a sample to try (Thanks @WhiskyExchange!).

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – The Whisky Exchange Black Friday Malt 2019 (53.1%)

Distilled at … Glenburgie Distillery??? (Just guessing!)
Aged for 21 years
1,800 70cl bottles available – limited to two per customer.
£79.95

Colour: Very pale straw.

Nose: This dram gives up it’s secrets quite slowly so patience is required!
Light, tropical fruitiness, iced tea, green apples and much later on – thick vanilla fudge.

Palate: Sweet tropical fruits with a nice hint of bitter seville oranges and chocolate. There’s also some creamy vanilla, cloves and a dusting of cinnamon spice – very nice!

Finish: Quite a dark, fiery finish but that lovely chocolate bitter orange continues coupled with tropical sweet loveliness. The sweet fruit gets stronger and more prevelant the longer you leave it in the glass – if you have that much will power!
Quite a dry finish at the end.

Overall: This is a lovely dram, perfect for Christmas and the winter months after that. The tropical fruit is a happy reminder of sunnier days past and looking forward to sunnier days ahead.
The spice, chocolate and oranges are a perfect match for Christmas.
It’s a slow burn dram though that needs time to develop – but the wait is certainly worth it!

Sampling The Whisky Exchange Christmas Malt 2019 – More Fire Than A Flaming Xmas Pud!

November 20, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Whisky Exchange Christmas Malt 2019!

You can’t keep a good idea from being repeated! With that thewhiskyexchange.com have released their second Christmas Malt – called un-surprisingly – The Whisky Exchange Christmas Malt 2019!

Only 2696 bottles available!

Once again, Billy Abbott from The Whisky Exchange has penned a little Christmas ditty:-

Amid presents and family
And bright festive lights
A whisky that’s perfect
For long winter nights

So pour for yourself
And others invite
To all a good whisky
And all a good night

This is an exclusive Christmas Malt for 2019, distilled and bottled in Speyside, having matured for 10 years in ex-bourbon and sherry-casks, triggering the wonderful flavours of Christmas with a core of fruit and festive spice.

The Whisky Exchange has kindly sent me a sample to try (Thanks @WhiskyExchange!).

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – The Whisky Exchange Christmas Malt 2019 (54.2%)

Distilled at Linkwood distillery
Aged in bourbon and sherry casks for 10 years
2696 70cl bottles available
£56.95

Colour: Pale straw, crisp and clear.

Nose: Lovely whiffs of Sherry which get more intense as time passes. Banana, apples and white oak. Rich fruit cake and black treacle. Little wisps of orange and furniture polish.

Palate: Tingly, tongue-dancing sherbet sweetness. Rich Christmas cake and caramel. Creamy butterscotch, little Xmas tangerines (the kind you always get at Crimbo time!)

Finish: Peppery, chilli spice. Fiery – like a log fire – but don’t get too close!

The sweetness dampens the heat and stays right through the finish which is quite long.

Overall: The addition of water takes a lot of heat off producing a smoother, thinner dram.

Quite a handful this one, especially on Christmas day. Very morish so be careful how much you ‘sample’ or you might just burn the dinner – or maybe it won’t get cooked at all!

Merry (Early) Christmas!

Sampling The Glen Moray 21 Year Old Portwood Finish – A Dram Of Two Halves – And Twice The Flavour!

November 15, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Glen Moray 21 Year Old Portwood Finish

I was lucky enough recently to be sent a sample of The Glen Moray 21 Year Old Portwood Finish – A Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky which is a new addition to Glen Moray’s Elgin Heritage Collection.

It is described as a finely tuned balance of American Oak and Port flavours. It’s smoothness being a great example of how the whisky and the Portugese port casks interact leading to a world of flavours after initial maturation in ex-bourbon casks.

The Glen Moray 21 Year Old Portwood Finish retails for approximately £125.00.

Once again, Many thanks to Glen Moray (@GlenMorayDist) for sending the sample!

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Glen Moray 21 Year Old Portwood Finish (46.3%)

Nose: Port, vanilla caramel and some fine plump raisins are present straight away. There’s some green apples with sweet orange and chocolate about midway. Much later on there’s furniture polish and some nice tropical nasalities!

Palate: Quite light in the mouth – there’s sweet port with vanilla, raisins and a little wood.

Finish: BIG spicy pepper hit – much bigger than I expected! Dry at the finish.

Overall: This is very much a dram of two definite halves – sweet fruits tempered by strong spice – I like!!

Add a little water and it’s beautifully thick and creamy. The Chocolate comes through big time and tastes great on the palate!

I would LOVE to try this at Cask strength – then maybe with a little water added – I think it would be dreamy!

Sampling The SMWS 58.31: “Berried Alive” – Berry Fruity As Well!

November 7, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

The SMWS 58.31: “Berried Alive”

It’s Month 5 of my regular samplings of The Scotch Malt Whisky Societies’ selection of recently released drams.

November’s dram-a-month, this month, is their SMWS 58.31 “Berried Alive”.

The 58.31 is a Speyside dram and of the original 244 bottles released – only a fifth remain to be sold – SMWS bottlings don’t hang around for long!

The SMWS (@SMWSUK) has very kindly sent me a sample to try – thanks SMWS!

So, what did I think?

Tasting Notes – SMWS 58.31 “Berried Alive” (59.1%)

A Speyside Dram (Strathisla Distillery) 12 years old, distilled on 30th. March 2006. Matured for 10 years in Ex-bourbon hogshead and then in 2nd. fill Chenin Blanc Barrique barrel for the remainder.
244 bottles were released.
(53 BOTTLES IN STOCK AT PRESENT!)

Nose: Creamy, fudgy, caramel with some fruity floweriness. There’s wisps of lemon in there as well.

Palate: Slightly tropical plus there is loads of fruity, plump raisins and vanilla sweetness – all contained in a slight creaminess.

Finish: Smooth finish with some medium spice, leather and a grapefruit dryness at the end. In fact there’s quite a lot of tannin there.

Overall: A nice dram though a bit dry for me at the finish which I struggled with. But then, I’m not a fan of very dry white wines either while my partner loves them!
As ever, horses for courses, but there’s no denying this is another quality SMWS whisky!

Glen Moray Celebrates Old Fashioned Week With Five Modern Versions Of The Classic Cocktail!

October 29, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

GlenMoray, Fired Oak, Bitters and Griottines – Yum!

With a view to championing the versatility and diversity of Single Malt, Glen Moray (@GlenMorayDist) has worked with Joel Harrison (@joeldram) and Neil Ridley (@NeilDram), from World’s Best Spirits, to shift the perception of Single Malt to make Old Fashioned Week 2019 (November 1st. to 10th.) even more adventurous this year!

Fired Oak Southern Old Fashioned

Using the whiskies from the Glen Moray Elgin Classic Collection and the recently released Glen Moray Fired Oak 10 Year Old Single Malt, Neil and Joel have created five new innovative twists on the classic Old Fashioned Cocktail recipe.

In addition to the innovative recipes, and again in collaboration with World’s Best Spirits, Glen Moray ran a series of Old-Fashioned Masterclasses across the UK this Autumn. The masterclasses ensured that the mastery of creating this historic cocktail was spread to the trade and consumers, whilst also encouraging people to be inventive and explore the Glen Moray range by creating their own Glen Moray Old Fashioned masterpiece.
(You can read about my Masterclass experience here!)

Classic Play It Again Sam Old Fashioned

We are firm believers that Scotch, especially single malt, should be explored in as many diverse serves as possible and the Old Fashioned is a wonderfully flavoursome vehicle to experience the huge variety of flavours on offer: from lighter, fruity and vanilla notes, through to big, rich, bold and spicy ones.

The Glen Moray range works really well to illustrate this.
– Neil Ridley and Joel Harrison: World’s Best Spirits

Seated Smoke And Mirrors Old Fashioned

Another key ingredient to an Old Fashioned are bitters, so to further enhance and elevate an Old Fashioned, or any other whisky cocktail, the Glen Moray team has created their own unique Glen Moray Bitters.

The aromas and flavours of the Glen Moray Bitters are from the maceration and distillation of rosemary and pepper with natural quinquina, dry gentian, absinthe, angelica and whisky.

Although Glen Moray Bitters cannot currently be purchased, they are available to bar tenders and will be showcased at masterclasses and consumer shows around the world.

The world famous Griottines Cherries, which are part of the La Martiniquaise-Bardinet company which owns Glen Moray Distillery, are also launching in the UK this October.

Not only is a cherry an essential addition to a classic Old Fashioned cocktail, but Griottines Cherries are held in the highest regard by bartenders and mixologists the world over. (And they are gorgeous!)

Port Cask Pink Old Fashioned

Here are the five new Glen Moray Old Fashioned Cocktails for 2020:

1. Glen Moray Sherry Cask Finish: Marmalade Old Fashioned

50ml Glen Moray Sherry Cask Finish, 1 heaped tsp of marmalade, 3 dashes of Aztec chocolate bitters (Fee Brothers), Ice

In an Old Fashioned glass, add the marmalade and whisky and stir down. Add a couple of cubes of ice and pour over the whisky. Stir down again before adding the bitters. Add more ice and stir. Once the drink is balanced, garnish with candied orange

2. Glen Moray Elgin Classic: Play It Again, Sam

50ml Glen Moray Elgin Classic, 1 tsp of golden caster sugar, 2 tsp water, 2 tsp rose water, 1 dash cardamom bitters (Bob’s bitters), Ice

In an Old Fashioned glass, mix the sugar and water by stirring with a bar spoon, slowly
adding ice. Then add the rose water and keep stirring. Add more ice, and the whisky followed by the dash of bitters until smooth. Add more cubed ice. Garnish with a rose petal.

3. Glen Moray Port Cask Finish: The Pink Old Fashioned

50ml Glen Moray Port Cask Finish, 1 tsp of golden caster sugar, 2 tsp of water, 2 dashes cherry bitters (Fee Brothers), Ice

In an Old Fashioned glass, add the sugar and water with a cube of ice and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Add the whisky and stir down with another cube of ice. Then add the bitters and another cube of ice, while stirring down. Keep adding ice and stirring until the drink is well balanced and not too diluted. Garnish with a fresh cherry. Option to lengthen with sparking water for an ‘Old Fashioned Spritz’.

4. Glen Moray Fired Oak: Southern Old Fashioned

50ml Glen Moray Fired Oak,1 tsp Maple Syrup, 2 dashes habanero shrub (Bittermens Hellfire habanero shrub), Ice

Add the maple syrup and the whisky into an Old Fashioned glass and stir a few times to mix together. Then fill with three ice cubes and add 2 dashes of the habanero shrub. Keep adding ice, stirring and tasting until perfectly balanced and garnish with a green chili pepper cut down the middle. Optional: rim the glass with chili salt.

Sampling The Lakes Distillery ‘Whiskymakers Reserve No.1’ – A Cracking Dram Created By A Whisky Extraordinaire!

October 18, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Whiskymakers Reserve No.1

Well the Lakes Distillery ‘Whiskymakers Reserve No.1’ has now sold out at their Distilleries Shop (and a lot of other stores as well!) which kind of took me by surprise really as I was just about to blog about my sampling of it!

Dhavall Gandhi

Never mind, I still think think it’s worth sharing my tasting notes as the No.1 is still available elsewhere (see below) and it’s a cracking dram!

You’ll find a description of The Whiskymakers Reserve No.1 here.

I think what stands out to me is The Lakes Distillery whisky blender extraordinaire Dhavall Gandhi. He is a Gent that likes to experiment and do things a little differently – as proved by a visit I was lucky enough to make last year.

At one point a group of us were sampling the various stages their whisky goes through before arriving at a saleable product. We were all very surprised when he just up and took us into their warehouse to sample other various whiskies straight from the barrel to demonstrate different flavour profiles!

Never would any other whiskymaker else do that – what a star!

Dhavall Gandhi takes to some barrel climbing!

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Lakes Distillery – ‘The Whiskymakers Reserve No.1’ (60.6%)

Nose: Crisp green apples, creamy vanilla and caramel. Sweet oranges, raisins and a little chocolate. Give it time though – some of these aromas take a little time to develop. Well worth the wait though!

Palate: Orange, apples and smooth vanilla but watch out for that alcohol!

Finish: Powerful, punchy spice with a long fruity, oaky finish which has some welcome sweetness to it.

Overall: 60.6% shows it’s muscle here and it’s quite intense!
Adding a little water retains that alcohol hit (if that’s what you want) but it does release more of it’s flavours. This lessens the punch to give a pleasanter spice and bringing out a creamier finish. In fact, for the first time, I added more water than my usual few drops and No.1 held it’s own nicely – lovely and creamy!

All-in-all a lovely dram. Lakes Distillery drams just keep on getting better and better!

Currently, The Whiskymaker’s Reserve No.1. can be bought online from:-

I don’t doubt this will change fast though!

Many thanks to Lakes Distillery (@LakesWhisky) for sending me the sample and I’ll try to be a bit quicker off the mark next time!

Sampling The Glen Moray “Old Fashioned” Masterclass – Be Not ‘Bitter’ – Just Be There!

October 16, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Glen Moray Old Fashioned Masterclass Winners With Neil & Joel!

If ever you get invited to a Glen Moray Old Fashioned Masterclass – grab it with both hands!

A table Groaning with Bitters & Sweetners!

I recently had the happy pleasure of attending one such event, hosted by the very able duo of Neil Ridley and Joel Harrison of World’s Best Spirits.

And what a time we had!

Fired Oak Cocktail!

We arrived to a long table laden with various styles of Glen Moray and the polished wood was also groaning with cocktail bitters of every description.

Not just your classic Angostura but also bitters exuding such aromic delights as chocolate, cherry, clove and much. much more! There was even Glen Moray’s very own specially made bitter!

I wasn’t aware there were so many styles of bitter available – if I had them all I wouldn’t have any space left for spirits!

We were there to try our hand at making, and experimenting with, the classic Whisky ‘Old Fashioned’ cocktail. A famous blend of Whisky, a little water, bitters and puddled (i.e. smashed up with a spoon of some sort) sugar.

Cherry Bitters Cocktail!

There was also a selection of sweetners including various sugars and syrups, even including marmalade – for a bitter sweet orangey hit!

Anyway, here are the cocktails I came up with:-

Fired Oak Cocktail

  • 50ml. Glen Moray ‘Fired Oak’ Whisky.
  • Angostura bitters.
  • Maple syrup
  • A little water.
  • Plenty of ice (because a cocktail is nothing without ice!)

Neil & Joel give us inspiration!

Cherry Bitters Cocktail

  • 50ml. Glen Moray ‘Port Cask Finish’ Whisky.
  • Cherry bitters.
  • Brown sugar.
  • A little water.
  • Plenty of ice (because a cocktail is nothing without ice!)

Classic Old Fashioned Cocktail

  • 50ml. Glen Moray ‘Elgin Classic’ Whisky.
  • Pure Cane Sugar syrup (because muddling is not as much fun as it sounds!)
  • Glen Moray Bitters.
  • A little water.
  • Plenty of ice (because a cocktail is nothing without ice!)

The joy of a Masterclass!

The tricky thing I found is to balance the sugar/syrup ratio with the rest of the ingredients so that there isn’t too much sweetness at the end of the cocktail.

I failed!

One thing to remember is – syrup sinks to the bottom of the glass – so maybe that’s why puddling is so popular as that problem doesn’t arise.

It’s a whole lot of fun and getting it wrong, as they say, is the best way of learning how to get it right!

Glen Moray Bitters

Many thanks to Glen Moray (@GlenMorayDist) for the invite and a great evening and (@joeldram) / (@NeilDram) for entertaining and enlightening us!

The winners of our mini-masterclass competition were cocktails made with Glen Moray ‘Fired Oak’ Whisky and a Whisky and chocolate bitters concoction which was amazing!

You may have spotted Harp Mannn amongst the two winners – not surprising really as he is a Drink Content Innovator, Inventor, Reviewer and Presenter on Instagram!
