Guest Blog – Fire In The Hole: Caperdonich 1995

Guest Blog From peatreek -see their website for more great reviews

We are pleased to feature a guest blog posting today from Angus at Peatreek.
You can read more about Angus at the end of the review.

Fire is a word that excites, it is a phenomenon that entices and it gives men the world over a huge feeling of power and intoxication (and I think secretly, most women too).
I would love to have witnessed when man first discovered fire. Perhaps a tree was ignited by a lightning strike, or maybe the heat of the summer created a bush fire?

Whatever it was, the image of the faces of the people watching must have been a picture: Fear and confusion leading to a manic glee bordering on drunken elation.

In my head they danced around the fire roasting mammoth meat and occasionally you would hear the yelp of an overly curious caveman putting his hand into the flame.

This response to fire has never changed, when sat at a dinner table and no one is looking I still pass my finger through the candle with just enough speed so as not to burn myself.
As a kid, blowing craters in cowpats with firecrackers stemmed from an obsession with the destructive force of fire. Then as a teenager camping with friends the highlight of the evening, even better than the copious amount of Stella we had garnered, was the thrill of starting a fire, usually with the help of a deodorant flame thrower that would later explode.

Arson aside, fire also brings us back to a sense of safety and warmth, where once a fire frightened off the wolves it now is a thing of familiarity. There is nothing like being inside a country pub as the rain lashes the windows, sat next to the fire with a pint of dark ale and a dog sat on your feet.
Fire is a kindred spirit with human beings, but best of all fire creates smoke and you can probably see where I am going with this.

I love smoky whiskies; I remember just sniffing the Smokehead for the first time and feeling instantly satisfied. I like that smoke can infuse itself in malt and even after distillation it is still a component part of a peated whisky.

The smell of smoke brings me straight back to thoughts of fire and warmth, of camping and companionship. For me, a good whisky requires just a whiff of smoke (peaty or not) to give it structure.
I think it is for this reason that I have struggled with Speyside in the past; it took a Strathisla with a hint of smoke to show me Speyside’s potential years back, so I have long been searching for another Speyside with this quality again.

Even though I am now much more appreciative of the region’s malts when I find one with a smoky quality, I can’t help but get excited.

Here is my latest find:

Caperdonich 1995

60.4% – 15 Years Old – Bottled by A.D. Rattray

Nose: Absolutely intriguing, fudge swaggers in first holding a bouquet of flowers before charcoal pirouettes in. This whisky has a smokiness like no other, not at all peaty but reminiscent of a barbeque on a summer’s evening.

Palate: Burnt toast presents itself with buttery popcorn and a touch of vanilla until once again that charcoal muscles in, giving this Speyside something to think about.

Finish: Fruity with a slight smoky quality, a calmer finish to an alcoholic single cask whisky.

Overall: What can I say? Speyside is a region that has to work to impress me and this Caperdonich has. It is that charcoal character that gives this dram the backbone it needs.
Furthermore, that smokiness is somewhat surprising and made me raise my eyebrows. I will certainly be searching for other Caperdonichs to try in the future. Top marks!
Angus.

Spirit Of Speyside Whisky Festival Now On

Spirit Of Speyside Whisky Festival

Spirit Of Speyside Whisky Festival

Devotees of the dram and non-whisky drinkers alike will be able to discover even more about the delights of Scotland’s Malt Whisky country this month as the 12th annual Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival starts.

The five-day festival’s packed programme of over 200 events starts today and runs until the 2nd. May. There is something to suit all levels of interest, from the exclusive three day intensive instruction on offer at the Spirit of Speyside Whisky School to a more light hearted look at the world of whisky with stand up comedian Vladimir McTavish.

Included in this year’s programme is the opportunity to become a Benromach warehouseman for the day, offering enthusiasts a unique opportunity to be initiated into the ultra exclusive whisky world with the chance to take part in the time honoured preparations of the iconic drink before hand-filling a bottle of Benromach as a souvenir of this unforgettable experience.

Whisky lovers can also take part in the Cask Strength Challenge Quiz at Strathisla Distillery, with the winning team taking away rare limited edition bottles of Deoch an Doras 36 Year Old whisky, produced by the now defunct Inverleven distillery.

For those who want to let their hair down while in Malt Whisky country there are a range of exciting daytime and evening entertainments showcasing the best of Speyside spirit including the Coleburn Distillery Fun Day and Ceilidh, an extravaganza added to this year’s programme offering whisky barrel buggy racing and some traditional craic at an evening ceilidh.

Other brand new musical highlights include a celebration of contemporary Scottish music at the Celtic Spirit evening at The Glenfiddich Distillery and the Whisky and Jazz event at the Craigellachie Hotel, where Dutch whisky author Hans Offringa will be on hand to sign copies of his book ‘The Road to Craigellachie – Revisited’ which will be officially re-launched as part of the festival programme offering enthusiasts the change to get their hands on a copy of this whisky themed travel book that quickly became a collector’s item after its first edition was released in 2004.

Over the course of the Festival visitors will have the opportunity take part in numerous long-standing favourite events such as guided tours of many of Speyside’s 50+ world renowned distilleries, including some not usually open to the public, as well uncovering the unique appeal of this amazing area of north east Scotland on a range of whisky themed walks and tours.

Outdoor events include the festival’s famed “Dramble” where walkers can sample the spirits on offer at the seven stills of Dufftown by foot, a selection of whisky and wildlife walks guided by local rangers, as well as exclusive motorised tours taking in the backcountry braes that used to conceal the smugglers stills by four wheel drive or even in an amphibious argocat.

Connoisseurs will have the chance to blend their own whisky at the Cardhu distillery as well as sampling some superb single malts and helping to select the winning whiskies at the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Awards prior to the annual opening dinner at Knockando Distillery.

Tastings will also be offered at a range of other events including the foodie friendly Sweet and Savoury Whisky Pairing workshops at Gordon and MacPhail where guests will receive guidance on how to select the top tipples to complement their favourite foods. Whisky and food will also be the subject of some new additions to the festival programme with tasting tours taking place on the Saturday and Sunday of the festival.

The Whisky Coast Explorer tour includes the opportunity to visit a host of distilleries in Scotland’s Highland, Islay and Island regions including Kilchoman, Bruichladdich, Bowmore, Ardbeg, Laphroaig and Oban.

First, visit the beautiful island of Islay, renowned for its peaty, smoky malt whiskies before enjoying a four island feast including the rolling mountains of Mull, spiritual and ever peaceful island of Iona, the extraordinary view over the dramatic basalt columns on Staffa and the majestic rugged landscapes of Skye.

The tour departs from Edinburgh and Glasgow on Fridays (returning to Edinburgh only) starting from 29 April 2011 and costs £478 for adults, £448 for concessions.

The Islay, Edinburgh and Speyside tour starts by taking in the famous Islay distilleries of Bowmore, Kilchoman, Bruichladdich, Ardbeg and Laphroig followed by a trip to Oban, and its distillery. The next two nights are spent soaking up culture and history in the city of Edinburgh, where guests can continue the whisky theme with a visit to The Scotch Malt Whisky Experience to see the world’s largest whisky collection of over 3,000 bottles.

The tour then continues north to Speyside, home to more than half of Scotland’s malt whisky distilleries, including stops at Dalwhinnie, Benromach and Glenlivet as well as the Speyside Cooperage to see how barrels are made. The tour also takes in Loch Fyne, Loch Lomond, Cairngorm National Park, Balmoral and historic Dunkeld.

Glengoyne Christmas Food and Whisky Festival

October 29, 2010 by Gary Leave a Comment

Glengoyne Christmas Food and Whisky Festival

Glengoyne Christmas Food and Whisky Festival

Glengoyne, Scotland’s most beautiful distillery, is pleased to announce that the second GLENGOYNE CHRISTMAS FOOD & WHISKY FESTIVAL will take place on SATURDAY 4th DECEMBER 2010. This Christmas event with local, like-minded food and drink partners will showcase the best SLOW produce from the area at the home of the SLOWEST distilled Scotch whisky.

Open from 10.30am – 4.30pm it will be a fun day aimed at all ages. In addition to food stalls there will be a range of unusual gift ideas and plenty of activities for all the family.

Distillery tours of Glengoyne and, of course, tastings will also be on offer. For the children there will be story-telling, face painting and not forgetting Santa’s Log Cabin – by the foot of the distillery waterfall at the end of a magical glen.

Building on the success of the 2008 event. Glengoyne have built on their previous success and now include one-off super-tastings to showcase the rarest and finest Glengoyne whisky, wandering minstrels, free wine, curry and MHOR master classes, additional heated areas, indoor parking, cooper racing (barrels, not cars) and, of course, a random fire engine.

Stuart Hendry of Glengoyne distillery said: “We’ve made a number of improvements this year, but been careful not to lose the unique atmosphere in the distillery courtyard which brought that elusive feeling of Christmas’s past. There was something magical about the last festival and it is important to keep hold of that.

“This year’s Festival will also see the launch of very special micro-release which will give whisky fans a unique insight into the maturation process. This ground breaking approach will appeal to whisky collectors and consumers alike. Further details to follow mid November.

“Glengoyne award-winning Single Malts are made without cutting corners, resulting in a uniquely smooth whisky, which is distilled at a slower rate than any other. We are proud of our ‘slow’ credentials and have been working with local producers such as Tom Lewis at Monachlye Mhor to celebrate these values as well as creating strong and growing links to local food producers and enthusiasts.”

Glengoyne Distillery, which offers an unrivalled visitor experience, is situated just 30 minutes outside Glasgow, looking out over the breath-taking West Highland Way.

The event is open to all ages.

Wanted: 50+ Malt Hotels!

I’m looking for Hotels in Scotland that stock a good range of malts for it’s customers.

An obvious location is on or around the Whisky Trail, but I’d love to hear from all hotels in Scotland that fit the bill.

They should be able to offer a range of 50+ malt whiskies to their clientele.

If you are one of those establishments (or know of any), please get in touch!

Use the ‘Contact Us’ page initially and I’ll get back to you pronto.

Many thanks in advance!

Grant’s Master Class for a Master Whisky

October 2, 2010 by Gary Leave a Comment

Grant's Whisky master blender Brian Kinsman mini-master class on whisky tasting

Have you’ve ever wondered what happens behind the scenes when a great whisky from a famous distiller is tasted?

Then wonder no more.

You can now join Grant’s Master Blender, Brian Kinsman, for a mini-master class on whisky tasting. As befitting a Master Blender he has had to follow a 10 year apprenticeship before he could become Grant’s Master Blender. Only the sixth since the inception of the company in 1887.

Brian and his team judge each individual spirit, including the final blend, solely by its aroma, known as ‘nosing’.

To ‘nose’ a whisky, the spirit is first mixed 50/50 with water. This reduces the amount of alcohol vapour. The liquid is then swirled around a tulip-shaped glass to release its full, true flavour.
Why a tulip glass?
Well the narrow top of the glass helps concentrate the flavour as the aroma is breathed in.

This dedication to quality and detail has helped Grant’s whiskies win over 50 medals including the 2008 and 2009 Distiller of the Year. And thats only in the last three years!
In 2010, they have notched up three gold medals at the International Wine and Spirit competition (IWS) and two golds at the International Spirits competition (ISC).

Take a look athe video and you’ll see the passion and commitment that has gone into making Grant’s whiskies a richer, more rewarding experience.

To find out more about Grant’s Whisky visit GrantsWhisky.com and register today to receive regular updates.
