Ardbeg – Ardbeg Day 2012 Country: Scotland Region: Islay Strength: 56.70% Summary: Specially bottled to celebrate the inaugural worldwide Ardbeg Day, this is a dram that sports a myriad of fine aromas and tastes. As well as its extremely drinkable qualities, it’s the required apparatus for those Islay-limpians who enjoy partaking in the Glass Lifting event. Aroma: Warm up with a burst of smoky, mint toffee followed by hints of banana, apple, dark chocolate, leather and cinnamon. Classic Ardbeg races in with oily crushed peat and a hint of lime juice. A splash of water brings forth more intense aromas, roasted coffee, smoked almonds and earthy, smoked fruits. Taste: Chewy, warming mouthfeel followed by a plunge into robust peaty flavours; soot, coal tar soap, aniseed and long-distance herbal notes. Next the International flavours of sweet maple-cured bacon, salted cashew nuts and delicate citrus enter the arena. Finish: Long and graceful, revealing soft creamy vanilla, milk chocolate and a suggestion of the malty, biscuit-like barley base. Deserves a medal. |
