Atom Brands’ Gins Awarded Both Gin Tasting trophies!

DOUBLE IWSC GIN TROPHY WINS FOR ATOM BRANDS

Atom Brands’ successful year shows no sign of stopping as their portfolio of gins has scooped an unprecedented double at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) 2017, claiming both The London Dry Gin Trophy and The Contemporary Gin Trophy as overall winners in the gin category. Atom Brands is also the only company to have been shortlisted for both UK Gin Producer of the Year and Scotch Whisky Producer of the Year 2017.

TBGC Swedish Rose Gin Hernî – IWSC London Dry Gin Trophy

The IWSC is one of the most prestigious and rigorous blind tasting competitions in the world, with approximately 400 gin entries for 2017 (representing a 561% increase since 2013), around half of which were London Dry gins hailing from 27 different countries.

Bathtub Gin Navy-Strength – IWSC Contemporary Gin Trophy

Atom Brands’ extraordinary achievements come hot on the heels of That Boutique-y Whisky Company being awarded the Scotch Whisky Grain Trophy at the International Spirits Challenge (ISC) 2017, where Atom Brands were the only company besides Diageo to be shortlisted for Scotch Whisky Producer of the Year, Gin Producer of the Year and Distiller of the Year. Their brands have also picked up over 50 Gold medals (and counting) in 2017 alone, from leading bodies such as the IWSC, ISC, San Francisco World Spirit Competition and World Drinks Awards.

Ableforth’s Bathtub Gin led the way for Atom Brands at this year’s IWSC with coveted Gold Outstanding medals for both the Navy-Strength and Cask-Aged Navy-Strength editions prior to Bathtub Gin Navy-Strength being awarded The Contemporary Gin Trophy. Bathtub Gin Navy-Strength is no stranger to silverware, of course, having been named Best Compound Gin at the World Gin Awards three years running.

Exceptionally spicy, covering the full range of the spice rack: cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves. Lovely and smooth in texture. Full of bold, resinous juniper flavours upfront, before a light, sweet note of cassia and slight cakiness that is reminiscent of tiffin slices and raisin country slices.
– IWSC Judges’ Bathtub Gin: Navy-Strength Tasting Notes

The London Dry Gin Trophy was awarded to That Boutique-y Gin Company’s Swedish Rose Gin, which is distilled by the excellent Hernö (IWSC Gin Producer of the Year 2016). It’s a huge win for both Atom Brands and the Swedish distillers.

Complex, classic, intense nose that is bright and lifted. Intense, citrus, juniper heavy pronounced nose personified. Incredibly intense, vivid and fresh in the mouth, zesty, powerfully botanical with explosive flavour.

– IWSC Judges’ Swedish Rose Gin: Hernö (That Boutique-y Gin Company) Tasting Notes

A double Trophy win at the IWSC is an astonishing testament to the uniquely uncompromising approach Atom Brands takes with product development.

We’ve long been confident that Ableforth’s produces some of the very best liquids in the world, and the recognition of our very first Boutique-y Gin collaboration with the fantastic Hernö distillery goes to show the power of unleashing distillers’ creativities through the world’s first independent gin bottler. We couldn’t be more delighted.
– Ben Ellefsen: Atom Brands’ Sales & NPD Director

The continued success of Atom Brands at the world’s leading spirits competitions and ability to compete with some of the largest names in the drinks industry further highlights the fact that they’re creating and producing some of the most exciting, innovative and high-growth brands around with a focus on quality.

In the heart of the distillery grounds there is a quiet corner. In these sacred surrounds sits our traditional dunnage warehouse. Within, our most treasured casks. These exclusive casks enjoy a magnificent atmosphere, laid low on antique wooden rails above cool earthen floor and stacked single level – unencumbered – so our warehousemen may keep vigil on the gently maturing spirit.
Cask numbers 23404, 23405 and 23406 have been lying peacefully in Warehouse 6 since being filled on November 20, 1972, gently and slowly maturing the precious spirit within. Over time – indeed over four decades of watchful waiting by the casks’ custodians – the spirit has given way to the angels who have claimed more than their fair share.
Having waited patiently for the perfect moment to catch this spirit in its prime, our distillery men have captured the heart of the distillery in this bottling.
In perfect harmony, aromas of autumn fruits, golden syrup and bursts of summer meadow wildflowers meet soft flavours of sweet almond, brown sugar, coffee and winter spices before a full, oily finish.

SIZE: 700 ml.
The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 year old single malt whisky gains its distinctive character from being matured in two wood types.
To make The Balvenie DoubleWood, David Stewart MBE takes whisky that has spent at least 12 years in traditional whisky casks, American Oak ex-bourbon barrels and hogsheads, and moves it to Spanish oak ex-Oloroso sherry casks for an additional nine months.
The whisky is then transferred to large oak vessels called “tuns” for 3-4 months to allow the whiskies to “marry”.
Each stage lends different qualities to the resulting single malt whisky. The traditional casks soften and add delicate character, the sherry wood brings depth and fullness of flavour and the final few months in our tuns allow the whiskies to marry harmoniously.
NOSE: Sweet fruit and Oloroso sherry notes, layered with honey and vanilla.
TASTE: Smooth and mellow with beautifully combined flavours ~ nutty sweetness, cinnamon spiciness and a delicately proportioned layer of sherry.
FINISH: Long and Warming.

To craft The Balvenie DoubleWood 17 year old single malt whisky Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE returned to one of his most celebrated achievements – consecutive maturation in two different types of cask, a process often referred to as ‘cask finishing’.
This technique is at the heart of The Balvenie DoubleWood – it sees the whisky matured first in American oak barrels, which impart soft sweet vanilla notes, before being transferred to European oak sherry casks, where the second cask ageing adds rich spicy flavours and a depth and fullness of flavour.
The DoubleWood 17 year old is an elder sibling to DoubleWood 12 year old and shares its honeyed, spicy characteristics, but it is distinctly different, with deeper vanilla notes, hints of green apple, creamy toffee and a striking richness and complexity.
NOSE: Elegant and complex oak, vanilla, honeyed sweetness and a hint of green apple.
TASTE: Sweet with dried fruits, sherbet spice, toasted almonds and cinnamon, layered with a richness of creamy toffee notes and traces of oak and deep vanilla.
FINISH: Vanilla oak, honey and spicy sweetness.

Having spent more than two decades in American oak, the Wine Merchant’s Collection whiskies have then been “finished” by introducing them into casks which formerly held some of the world’s most coveted wines.
This particular whisky was distilled in 1992, and matured until 2014 in Hogshead casks. Having rested in these casks, we then introduced it into an American oak barrel, formerly containing Zinfandel, from Ridge Vineyards, one of the leading lights of California’s wine scene, to add an extra layer of complexity to the spirit.
Ridge Vineyards is famed for producing fine wines that are every bit the equal – in both quality and desirability – of Bordeaux First Growths or Grand Cru Burgundy. Since winemaker Paul Draper’s appointment in the late-1960s, the estate has been at the vanguard of the Californian industry. When, less than a decade after his arrival, Draper’s wines saw off French competition at the now-notorious Judgement of Paris tasting, the estate shot to fame overnight. Its silky, smooth reds with fine tannins and glorious fruit have been in high demand ever since.
The Glenrothes whisky experts kept a close eye on the spirit until, at last, it was judged to be perfectly balanced and mature – only then was it bottled. Unchill-filtered, natural in colour and bottled at cask strength resulting in an intense, distinctive and unusual expression.
Appearance: Clear and bright.
Bouquet: Almonds, orchards and whisky warehouse.
Palate: Nutty, caramelised sugar, soft.
Finish: Mid-to-long finish.

TBWC Releases 100th Line: A Supersplendiferous Speyburn Single Malt!

July 18, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

A Supersplendiferous Speyburn Single Malt!

Multi-award-winning independent bottler That Boutique-y Whisky Company (TBWC) has released their first batch of Speyburn single malt, which is their 100th first batch! A one-of-a-kind ‘pimped’ one litre bottle of the whisky is also being auctioned for charity.

Pimped 1L Charity Auction Bottle

That Boutique-y Whisky Company, established in 2012, has hit the milestone of releasing their 100th product line. The total represents 100 different whiskies from around the world, incorporating Single Malts, Blended Malts, Single Grains and Blended Whiskies. Most of these have already run to multiple popular and award-winning batches.

The latest addition is the increasingly celebrated Speyburn single malt Scotch whisky. Batch 1 is a 7 year old, and just 233 (50cl) bottles are available at an ABV of 49.5% (RRP £46.95).

A special one-of-kind litre bottle of the single malt is also being produced to mark the occasion, which will be auctioned to raise money for the charity Malaria No More UK from the 17th-24th July on Master of Malt. The bottle features hand painted gold detail, comes with a specially created presentation box and has otherwise been ‘pimped’ by prominent Speyburn enthusiast Jan Birch of Drumnadrochit (Birch will require no introduction to Whisky Sponge readers).

Reaching 100 individual lines is a significant milestone, but really only scratches the surface of the scope of TBWC’s ambitions. The fact that the 100th line is from Speyburn (and is hence, objectively the nectar of the gods) is frankly a delightful coincidence. And nothing more. Where’s my Martini?
– Ben Ellefsen: TBWC’s Main Man

Speyburn TBWC label

The aforementioned Whisky Sponge and Jan Birch have provided their own comments, which are also included on the back label of the bottle:

Lagavulin wishes it was the Speyburn of Islay

– THE WHISKY SPONGE

Speyburn owes its unique flavour to the Victorian Salmon Cannon used in its production
– JAN BIRCH: (Unofficial Speyburn Brand Ambassador (until the tribunal))

The majestic forest that surrounds the Hakushu Distillery shelters an abundance of plant varieties reflecting the many expressions of Japanese nature.

The Yamazaki Distillery is Japan's first and oldest malt whisky distillery established in 1923 by Suntory's founder Shinjiro Torii.
Inspired by traditional Scottish whisky, Torii envisioned a Japanese approach by choosing a terrain and climate completely different to those of Scotland to create a unique kind of whisky. The Yamazaki Distillery is thus the birthplace of Japanese whisky. Nestled proudly on the periphery of Kyoto, this region was formerly referred to as "Minaseno", where one of the purest waters of Japan originates.
Yamazaki is also home to Sen no Rikyu, Master of "The Way of Tea." Yamazaki Distillery is where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers converge, providing a unique misty climate and one of Japan’s softest waters. The diversity of this region’s temperature and humidity creates ideal conditions for cask aging, known as the signature “Suntory Maturation.”
The new Yamazaki is born of the meeting of a variety of Yamazaki malts, including the traditional Yamazaki malts stored in Japanese oak (Mizunara) casks and revolutionary malts stored in wine casks.
Tasting Notes: The strawberry-like fragrance hidden in the soft, gorgeous aroma is brought about by the malt whisky aged in wine casks. The sweet, sparkling, smooth spreading feeling comes from the malt whisky aged in Mizunara oak casks.
Colour: gold.
Nose: strawberry, cherry, Mizunara (Japanese oak).
Palate: raspberry, white peach, touch of coconut.

Prise open a rock oyster and you’d be lucky indeed to find a pearl. The real treasure though is the hidden, tasty delicacy inside, rich with the flavours of the sea. Bottled at 46.8% alcohol strength and traditionally without colouring or chill-filtration, this Small Batch bottling has a truly maritime and oceanic character of sea-salt, sweet peat, smoke, honey and pepper. Containing the finest malt whiskies from Scotland’s Whisky islands, including those distilled on Islay, Arran, Orkney and Jura, it’s no wonder the Master Blender Fred Laing says “If I could select just one dram to transport the Whisky enthusiast to the Islands of Scotland, it would be this Rock Oyster.”
Rock Oyster 18 Years Old is a maritime marriage of Malts distilled on Arran, Islay, Jura and Orkney. Rich with flavours of the sea, Rock Oyster’s new limited edition delivers a blast of sea air, tobacco and sweet peat, brought to life on the packaging by a detailed illustration of a sailboat battling stormy seas off Scotland’s West Coast. In line with the Douglas Laing family philosophy, it is offered without colouring or chill-filtration, at alcohol strength of 46.8%.

The original Timorous Beastie, immortalised in Robert Burns’ famous Scots poem “To a Mouse” was a timid, little field mouse. Echoing our national bard’s wit, ours is most certainly not for the fainthearted! Timorous Beastie captures the essence of The Highlands; a marriage of the regions finest malts including Dalmore, Glengoyne and Glen Garioch. It is, of course, proudly without colouring or chill-filtration and bottled at 46.8% alcohol, resulting in an oily, chewy spirit that brings an incredible mouth-feel.
Timorous Beastie 18 Years Old is beautifully aged, Highland “Vatted” Malt, that is proudly offered without colouring or chill-filtration. Bottled at 46.8% alcohol strength, Timorous Beastie 18 Years Old's tasting notes include gentle spices, complemented by honey, vanilla and juicy barley. The third release under the brand to carry an age statement, Timorous Beastie 18 Years Old follows 2016’s globally acclaimed 40 Years Old and 21 Years Old bottlings.
The Timorous Beastie 18 Years Old is gently spiced initially on the nose, warming to honey, vanilla and juicy barley. All are similarly apparent on the intricate palate plus a late layer of macerated dark fruit. The finish shows cough drop spices, more of those dulcet flavours replicated from the palate, running to a bone dry finale.

Chivas Regal Raises A Toast To Atsushi Suzuki!

July 6, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

Atsushi Suzuki

CHINA BARTENDER CROWNED 2017 CHIVAS MASTERS GLOBAL CHAMPION IN TOKYO WITH MEXICO AND HONG KONG COMPLETING THE WINNING COLLECTIVE TEAM

Chivas Regal has crowned Atsushi Suzuki from the Sober Company in Shanghai, China, the 2017 Chivas Masters Global Champion. Over a challenging five-day finale in Tokyo, Japan, Atsushi overcame strong competition from 14 of the world’s most skilled bartenders and led the winning Chivas Masters Collective team to victory, before being declared the overall champion.

The fourth Chivas Masters Global Final required the 15 national winners to showcase the Chivas Regal values of brotherhood, collaboration and generosity. Atsushi impressed the expert panel of judges by expressing these core principles as he proved the outstanding contestant in what was a highly captivating and memorable final, culminating in the awards ceremony at the MIXX Bar & Lounge at the ANA InterContinental Tokyo.

A Japanese native himself, Atsushi fully embraced the traditions of Japanese bartending culture throughout a week of individual and team challenges, which included four individual drinks-making rounds. Atsushi’s winning team drinks ritual was The Double Talk, which was made using Chivas Regal 12, and presented with a focus on Japanese craftsmanship, kind service and attention to detail. Inspired by the way in which great drinks can bring people together and cross language barriers, he collaborated with his Mexican and Hong Kong team-mates, and was mentored by hospitality industry pioneer and team sensei Iain Griffiths, to devise a ritual which ensured the drink was designed to be shared, and allowed the drink to be adapted and personalised for different countries around the world.

The Finalists

As the newly crowned 2017 Chivas Masters Global Champion, Atsushi has won an all-access, all-expenses-paid trip to Tales of The Cocktail 2017 in New Orleans. The winning Chivas Masters Collective team led by Atsushi – comprising Mexico’s Haydée Barron Flores and Ryan Nightingale from Hong Kong – walked away with the pinnacle of the range, Chivas Regal The Icon, presented in a bespoke decanter with customised Japanese glassware.

Wow. It is such an honour to receive this – and in my home town too. I feel like it’s a win for Japan as well as for China. And of course it’s not just for me, but for my awesome team of Haydée and Ryan, and my sensei, Iain. I’ve found friends for the rest of my life through the Chivas Masters – and I’ve learnt how to be a better bartender too.

– Atsushi Suzuki

The Chivas Masters Global Final has again shown the world the wonderful values and principles that great bartending can harness. Atsushi fully took the Chivas Regal spirit of generosity and collaboration with him into the final, which was the eventual point of difference in a very tough field – alongside, of course, some spectacular bartending skills.

Beyond the serve itself, teamwork and collaboration are just as crucial to the craft of drinks-making, and we have witnessed that here today, and throughout the entire contest. That is why we are also delighted to honour the entire winning Chivas Masters Collective, who helped lead our champion to victory and demonstrated that success really does taste better shared.
– Max Warner: Global Brand Ambassador for Chivas Regal

The 2017 Chivas Masters Global Final was host to a distinguished panel of internationally acclaimed judges: Iain Griffiths, hospitality industry pioneer and co-founder of Mr Lyan Ltd; Micah Melton, beverage director at the Alinea Group and renowned ‘ice chef’; Chris Lowder, ‘New York’s Rising Star Bartender’ in 2015; Dré Masso, ex-director of bars for the Potato Head Group in Bali, Jakarta, Singapore and Hong Kong; and Rogerio Igarashi Vaz, owner of Tokyo’s Tram & Trench.

Each not only scored the finalists, but also shared their insights and expertise through a series of inspirational masterclasses over the course of the week.

The evening also saw the first ever Chivas Masters Global Champion, Masa Urushido, honoured as a Grand Master, in his native Japan.
