Irish Distillers Proudly Unveils Green Spot Chateau Montelena!

October 3, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

Green Spot Chateau Montelena Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey

Irish Distillers have unveiled Green Spot Chateau Montelena, the first Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey to be finished in French oak Zinfandel wine casks. Matured until the combination of wine, whiskey and oak has reached the perfect balance, this new release is the second in the Wine Geese series of Green Spot Single Pot Still Irish Whiskeys that have been finished in unique wine casks.

The first Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey to be finished in French oak Zinfandel wine casks

Green Spot Chateau Montelena has been initially matured in American Bourbon and sherry casks and then finished for one year in casks previously filled with Zinfandel wine from the famed Chateau Montelena, Napa Valley. This rare cask finish contributes pomegranate, cranberry and maraschino cherry on the nose, a dry note to the silky mouthfeel and the finish combines classic long pot still spice flavours with a delicate wine influence, all in perfect harmony.

Green Spot Chateau Montelena also represents the coming together of two stories of Irish endeavour and enterprise. The Mitchells, who bottled and sold the original Green Spot under bond until 1968 and Jim Barrett, who restored the California-based Chateau Montelena to its former glory in 1972.

Son of John Barrett, a Waterford man who emigrated to the USA after World War I, Jim Barrett followed in a long list of Wine Geese – Irish migrants that established leading wineries around the world. Today, the time-honoured traditions of Chateau Montelena are upheld by Jim’s son, Bo Barrett.

Crafted at the Midleton Distillery by Kevin O’Gorman, Head of Maturation and long-serving Head Blender, Billy Leighton, Green Spot Chateau Montelena is the second edition in the Wine Geese series following the launch of Green Spot Château Léoville Barton in 2015.

Bottled at 46% ABV and without chill-filtration, Green Spot Chateau Montelena will be available in limited quantities each year in the USA, Canada and Ireland (including Ireland Travel Retail).

Green Spot Chateau Montelena is the celebration of three famous Irish institutions – Midleton Distillery, Mitchell and Son and Chateau Montelena – working in harmony to craft a new and innovative Irish whiskey that will appeal to whiskey and wine drinkers alike.

Exploring the influence of these prized wine casks on Green Spot Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey was our inspiration. We found that the black-skinned Zinfandel grapes are full of ripe, spicy berry flavours, which imparts a distinctive and refined fruitiness to the wine and also the casks in which they matured.

Working closely with Billy Leighton, we monitored the finishing process over the course of one year until we reached the perfect balance of flavours – the result is a rich pot still whiskey with classic Green Spot red apples, pears, vanilla and liquorice complemented by the dry and fruity Zinfandel wine.
– Kevin O’Gorman: Head of Maturation at Midleton Distillery

Chateau Montelena wine casks

It has been a pleasure to work with Billy Leighton, Kevin O’Gorman and the whole production team at Midleton Distillery on this exciting project. We were brought together by a shared heritage and common respect for excellence in craft that has been wholly realised in Green Spot Chateau Montelena.

I hope consumers will enjoy the Zinfandel twist to the classic Green Spot single pot still flavour.
– Bo Barrett: Chief Executive Officer at Chateau Montelena

Tasting notes by Kevin O’Gorman, Head of Maturation at Midleton Distillery

Nose: Crisp oak combines with the soft sweetness of vanilla, white chocolate and marshmallow, balanced with signature Green Spot red apples and ripe pears, along with pomegranate, cranberries and maraschino cherries, the contribution of the wine cask.
Taste: Sweet mouth coating takes on a dry note thanks to the effect of the wine cask. Pot still spices subside with zesty citrus leading to ripe orchard fruit and red berries. A touch of marzipan and toasted oak add to the complexity.
Finish: Satisfyingly long with pot still spices in harmony with the delicate dry wine contribution.

SIZE: 700 ml.
THE SPIRIT OF OCTOMORE HAS BEEN DEFYING LOGIC FOR OVER FIFTEEN YEARS. THE “WHAT IF” MOMENT THAT ONCE SEEMED ALMOST ABSURD HAS PROGRESSIVELY MORPHED INTO SOMETHING ENDLESSLY ALLURING. NOW, SUDDENLY, THERE ARE EIGHT.
Led by the structural brilliance of 08.1, we can pause at this symbolic moment to enjoy a single malt masterclass. The experimental ethos, the muscular quality, is still very much to the fore, but there is enlightenment now, a sure-footed confidence. 08.1 is the necessary benchmark, the launch pad from which others can only follow. 08.1 reveals the astonishing subtlety of our phenolic universe, leading us along a pathway into a world like no other.
CHARACTER: Refined, confident, a little extra age has tempered some of the vitality but this dram has gained a classic, timeless feel.
COLOUR: Winter sun, crisp and bright.
NOSE: Initially smoke, tar, peat ash hint of muddiness/wet peat moss. Candied orange, pepper, chocolate, macaroon, vanilla fudge and lemon meringue pie.
PALATE: Liquid gold, soft and delicate texture from slow distillation. Superb fruit/smoke combination. On the lips there is soft kiss of salt spray, ozone fresh. Sweet oak gives vanilla, fudge, marzipan and walnut. Melon and citrus come through on a floral breeze. Many layered there is a lot find in this Octomore.
FINISH: Wow! Smoothness, sweetness and then smoke. A texture like no other, satin soft and devilishly warming. The American oak influence is in perfect tune with the smoke and soft fruits delicately, skilfully coaxed from the still during exceptionally slow distillation. Vanilla, honey, citrus rise up to be met with sea spray and leather, smoked mussels mix with autumn bracken and creme brûlée.

Expected release date is 22nd Sep 2017

Strength:
70cl

Summary: COUNTRY/REGION: Scotland/Various. UNIT: 1 x 70cl CATEGORY: Blended Malt. DISTILLERY: Dalmore, Blair Athol and Glen Garioch. BOTTLER: Douglas Laing. BOTTLING SERIE: Timorous Beastie. BOTTLED: 2017 STATED AGE: 18 years old. NUMBER OF BOTTLES: 7258 STRENGTH: 46.8% Vol. The original Timorous Beastie, immortalised in Robert Burns’ famous Scots poem “To a Mouse” was a timid, little field mouse. Echoing our national bard’s wit, ours is most certainly not for the fainthearted! Timorous Beastie captures the essence of The Highlands; a marriage of the regions finest malts including Dalmore, Glengoyne and Glen Garioch. It is, of course, proudly without colouring or chill-filtration and bottled at 46.8% alcohol, resulting in an oily, chewy spirit that brings an incredible mouth-feel. Timorous Beastie 18 Years Old is beautifully aged, Highland “Vatted” Malt, that is proudly offered without colouring or chill-filtration. Bottled at 46.8% alcohol strength, Timorous Beastie 18 Years Old's tasting notes include gentle spices, complemented by honey, vanilla and juicy barley. The third release under the brand to carry an age statement, Timorous Beastie 18 Years Old follows 2016’s globally acclaimed 40 Years Old and 21 Years Old bottlings. The Timorous Beastie 18 Years Old is gently spiced initially on the nose, warming to honey, vanilla and juicy barley. All are similarly apparent on the intricate palate plus a late layer of macerated dark fruit. The finish shows cough drop spices, more of those dulcet flavours replicated from the palate, running to a bone dry finale.

Old Samuel Bourbon Gets New Look!

September 12, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

Dutch Spirits, plans to take full advantage of the current global Bourbon Boom

Dutch distiller, Dutch Spirits, plans to take full advantage of the current global Bourbon Boom by unveiling a new packaging for its Old Samuel range as it looks to increase the brand’s global availability.

The new Old Samuel packaging is being rolled-out globally from September onwards.

Old Samuel is sporting a new, sleek, black packaging for its Bourbon Reserve and four liqueurs: Honey, Cherry, Cinnamon and Almond flavours. The new, eye-catching packaging reflects the liquid’s quality.

It will also enable the award-winning bourbon to stand out on shelves while confidently competing with other brands of the category. Each label of the range is colour-coded to create cohesion but also distinction between the various styles.

The move is also accompanied by a 40% production increase Year on Year, as the brand, which is currently available in the UK, has already secured major listings in Holland and Poland and is looking to expand outside Europe.

Bourbon is having its moment and it is a good opportunity for us to increase the reach of our Old Samuel brand. It has been doing extremely well in the UK and we are keen to introduce it to other markets worldwide.

The liquid is award-winning and the brand packaging had to evolve to reflect its quality. We are now confident that it will appeal to bourbon-lovers worldwide.
– Andy Mallows: Dutch Spirits’ MD
