The majestic forest that surrounds the Hakushu Distillery shelters an abundance of plant varieties reflecting the many expressions of Japanese nature.

The Yamazaki Distillery is Japan's first and oldest malt whisky distillery established in 1923 by Suntory's founder Shinjiro Torii.
Inspired by traditional Scottish whisky, Torii envisioned a Japanese approach by choosing a terrain and climate completely different to those of Scotland to create a unique kind of whisky. The Yamazaki Distillery is thus the birthplace of Japanese whisky. Nestled proudly on the periphery of Kyoto, this region was formerly referred to as "Minaseno", where one of the purest waters of Japan originates.
Yamazaki is also home to Sen no Rikyu, Master of "The Way of Tea." Yamazaki Distillery is where the Katsura, Uji and Kizu rivers converge, providing a unique misty climate and one of Japan’s softest waters. The diversity of this region’s temperature and humidity creates ideal conditions for cask aging, known as the signature “Suntory Maturation.”
The new Yamazaki is born of the meeting of a variety of Yamazaki malts, including the traditional Yamazaki malts stored in Japanese oak (Mizunara) casks and revolutionary malts stored in wine casks.
Tasting Notes: The strawberry-like fragrance hidden in the soft, gorgeous aroma is brought about by the malt whisky aged in wine casks. The sweet, sparkling, smooth spreading feeling comes from the malt whisky aged in Mizunara oak casks.
Colour: gold.
Nose: strawberry, cherry, Mizunara (Japanese oak).
Palate: raspberry, white peach, touch of coconut.
Finish: sweet vanilla, clean finish,hint of cinnamon.

Prise open a rock oyster and you’d be lucky indeed to find a pearl. The real treasure though is the hidden, tasty delicacy inside, rich with the flavours of the sea. Bottled at 46.8% alcohol strength and traditionally without colouring or chill-filtration, this Small Batch bottling has a truly maritime and oceanic character of sea-salt, sweet peat, smoke, honey and pepper. Containing the finest malt whiskies from Scotland’s Whisky islands, including those distilled on Islay, Arran, Orkney and Jura, it’s no wonder the Master Blender Fred Laing says “If I could select just one dram to transport the Whisky enthusiast to the Islands of Scotland, it would be this Rock Oyster.”
Rock Oyster 18 Years Old is a maritime marriage of Malts distilled on Arran, Islay, Jura and Orkney. Rich with flavours of the sea, Rock Oyster’s new limited edition delivers a blast of sea air, tobacco and sweet peat, brought to life on the packaging by a detailed illustration of a sailboat battling stormy seas off Scotland’s West Coast. In line with the Douglas Laing family philosophy, it is offered without colouring or chill-filtration, at alcohol strength of 46.8%.

The original Timorous Beastie, immortalised in Robert Burns’ famous Scots poem “To a Mouse” was a timid, little field mouse. Echoing our national bard’s wit, ours is most certainly not for the fainthearted! Timorous Beastie captures the essence of The Highlands; a marriage of the regions finest malts including Dalmore, Glengoyne and Glen Garioch. It is, of course, proudly without colouring or chill-filtration and bottled at 46.8% alcohol, resulting in an oily, chewy spirit that brings an incredible mouth-feel.
Timorous Beastie 18 Years Old is beautifully aged, Highland “Vatted” Malt, that is proudly offered without colouring or chill-filtration. Bottled at 46.8% alcohol strength, Timorous Beastie 18 Years Old's tasting notes include gentle spices, complemented by honey, vanilla and juicy barley. The third release under the brand to carry an age statement, Timorous Beastie 18 Years Old follows 2016’s globally acclaimed 40 Years Old and 21 Years Old bottlings.
The Timorous Beastie 18 Years Old is gently spiced initially on the nose, warming to honey, vanilla and juicy barley. All are similarly apparent on the intricate palate plus a late layer of macerated dark fruit. The finish shows cough drop spices, more of those dulcet flavours replicated from the palate, running to a bone dry finale.

Chivas Regal Raises A Toast To Atsushi Suzuki!

July 6, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

Atsushi Suzuki

CHINA BARTENDER CROWNED 2017 CHIVAS MASTERS GLOBAL CHAMPION IN TOKYO WITH MEXICO AND HONG KONG COMPLETING THE WINNING COLLECTIVE TEAM

Chivas Regal has crowned Atsushi Suzuki from the Sober Company in Shanghai, China, the 2017 Chivas Masters Global Champion. Over a challenging five-day finale in Tokyo, Japan, Atsushi overcame strong competition from 14 of the world’s most skilled bartenders and led the winning Chivas Masters Collective team to victory, before being declared the overall champion.

The fourth Chivas Masters Global Final required the 15 national winners to showcase the Chivas Regal values of brotherhood, collaboration and generosity. Atsushi impressed the expert panel of judges by expressing these core principles as he proved the outstanding contestant in what was a highly captivating and memorable final, culminating in the awards ceremony at the MIXX Bar & Lounge at the ANA InterContinental Tokyo.

A Japanese native himself, Atsushi fully embraced the traditions of Japanese bartending culture throughout a week of individual and team challenges, which included four individual drinks-making rounds. Atsushi’s winning team drinks ritual was The Double Talk, which was made using Chivas Regal 12, and presented with a focus on Japanese craftsmanship, kind service and attention to detail. Inspired by the way in which great drinks can bring people together and cross language barriers, he collaborated with his Mexican and Hong Kong team-mates, and was mentored by hospitality industry pioneer and team sensei Iain Griffiths, to devise a ritual which ensured the drink was designed to be shared, and allowed the drink to be adapted and personalised for different countries around the world.

The Finalists

As the newly crowned 2017 Chivas Masters Global Champion, Atsushi has won an all-access, all-expenses-paid trip to Tales of The Cocktail 2017 in New Orleans. The winning Chivas Masters Collective team led by Atsushi – comprising Mexico’s Haydée Barron Flores and Ryan Nightingale from Hong Kong – walked away with the pinnacle of the range, Chivas Regal The Icon, presented in a bespoke decanter with customised Japanese glassware.

Wow. It is such an honour to receive this – and in my home town too. I feel like it’s a win for Japan as well as for China. And of course it’s not just for me, but for my awesome team of Haydée and Ryan, and my sensei, Iain. I’ve found friends for the rest of my life through the Chivas Masters – and I’ve learnt how to be a better bartender too.

– Atsushi Suzuki

The Chivas Masters Global Final has again shown the world the wonderful values and principles that great bartending can harness. Atsushi fully took the Chivas Regal spirit of generosity and collaboration with him into the final, which was the eventual point of difference in a very tough field – alongside, of course, some spectacular bartending skills.

Beyond the serve itself, teamwork and collaboration are just as crucial to the craft of drinks-making, and we have witnessed that here today, and throughout the entire contest. That is why we are also delighted to honour the entire winning Chivas Masters Collective, who helped lead our champion to victory and demonstrated that success really does taste better shared.
– Max Warner: Global Brand Ambassador for Chivas Regal

The 2017 Chivas Masters Global Final was host to a distinguished panel of internationally acclaimed judges: Iain Griffiths, hospitality industry pioneer and co-founder of Mr Lyan Ltd; Micah Melton, beverage director at the Alinea Group and renowned ‘ice chef’; Chris Lowder, ‘New York’s Rising Star Bartender’ in 2015; Dré Masso, ex-director of bars for the Potato Head Group in Bali, Jakarta, Singapore and Hong Kong; and Rogerio Igarashi Vaz, owner of Tokyo’s Tram & Trench.

Each not only scored the finalists, but also shared their insights and expertise through a series of inspirational masterclasses over the course of the week.

The evening also saw the first ever Chivas Masters Global Champion, Masa Urushido, honoured as a Grand Master, in his native Japan.

A non-peated Indian Single Malt Whisky.
Nose: a complex amalgam of nougat, spotted dog pudding (sans sultanas!) and orange blossom honey with the vanilla spinning tangled webs just beneath. Honey is captured as the bourbon element expands; a delicate gristiness ushers in a freshness to the custard tart;
Taste: the mouth feel exudes star quality with the barley generating all kinds of juicy riches with the light Demerara sugars forming an elegant accompaniment. A coppery spine is soon carrying the barley in varied forms while a gorgeous cocoa sub strata heralds in the spices which buzz the taste buds at will;
Finish: beautifully relaxed: a light tingle from the spices pulses contentedly, the vanillas gather in deeper intensity yet the barley and copper stretches to the end;
Balance: yet another astonishing malt from India.

New Project To Bring Environmentally Friendly Energy To Scottish Distilleries!

June 30, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

LNG is produced by liquefying natural gas to significantly reduce its volume, so that it can be more efficiently transported.

– Innovative Project to Deliver Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Directly to Scottish Port
– Project Aims to Reduce LNG Prices and Help Lower Carbon Emissions
– Brewing and Distilling Sectors to Benefit

Flogas Britain, the UK’s leading LNG provider, and Stolt-Nielsen LNG Holdings Limited, a leading global provider of bulk liquid transportation and storage solutions, are working on a joint project to explore bringing LNG to areas of Scotland and the north of England not served by the existing natural-gas grid.

If successful, the initiative will reduce the cost of energy for businesses located off the national gas network, bringing huge benefits to those in the brewing and distilling industry.

LNG will be shipped by Stolt-Nielsen LNG via small-scale LNG carriers and stored in bulk at the Port of Rosyth in Dunfermline, before being distributed by Flogas road tankers to distilleries and breweries across Scotland and the north of England.

At present, the region’s off-grid natural gas is delivered by road tanker from Kent, South East England. The costs associated with the long distances are high, forcing many off-grid breweries and distilleries to use oil to power their processes, or pay a premium for gas.

With a target completion date set for 2019, the bulk LNG solution will deliver LNG more cost effectively, thus enabling users to switch to the more environmentally friendly fuel, which will help reduce carbon emissions in line with the Scottish Government’s Low Carbon Economic Strategy (LCES).

Often located in off grid locations, breweries and distilleries will be among the biggest beneficiaries of this unique project. Not only will it help reduce energy costs, but it will also help cut carbon emissions. We’re working on obtaining permits at the moment, and once we have them construction will begin.

Flogas already supplies gas to many distilleries in Scotland, and the interest we have from potential new customers is huge. The demand is certainly there. We now need to work with the Scottish Government and our other stakeholders to bring the project to life.
– Rob McCord: Flogas’ Head of Sales

Chivas Regal Announces The 15 National Winners For Chivas Masters Global Final

June 23, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

The 2017 Chivas Masters Global Champion Finalists

Chivas Regal has revealed the 15 national winners who will compete to be crowned the 2017 Chivas Masters Global Champion, at the Chivas Masters Global Final taking place next month in Tokyo.

Now in its fourth year, the 2017 Chivas Masters Global Final (1st – 5th July) will focus for the first time on the celebrated traditions of Tokyo’s bartending scene – whose unique cocktail customs continue to fascinate and inspire bartenders across the world. Throughout the week, the contestants will take part in a number of individual and team challenges, and will need to showcase both exemplary bartending skills and team spirit to impress the judges.

The 15 finalists, who have each excelled in their national competitions running across four continents, will be hosted in Tokyo by Masahiro Urushido, the first ever Chivas Masters Global Champion. They will be mentored by a distinguished panel of internationally-acclaimed judges, who will share their expertise through a series of inspirational masterclasses.

The panel comprises:
– Iain Griffiths, hospitality industry pioneer and co-founder of Mr Lyan Ltd;
– Micah Melton, beverage director at the Alinea Group (Aviary Chicago & NY) and renowned ‘ice chef’;
– Chris Lowder, spirits evangelist and ‘New York’s Rising Star Bartender 2015’ (StarChefs);
– Dré Masso, ex-director of bars for the Potato Head Group in Bali, Jakarta, Singapore and Hong Kong; worldwide Cocktail Mentor and spirit creator
– Rogerio Igarashi Vaz, owner of Tokyo’s Tram & Trench, celebrating the modern interpretation of Japanese bartending

Our 15 national winners have already hugely impressed us with both their skill and character, but there’s still much more to do if they want to be crowned our 2017 Chivas Masters Global Champion.

The values of community, collaboration and generosity lie at the very heart of this competition, and successful participants must not only impress a world-renowned panel of judges, but demonstrate that they embody these values every step of the way.
– Max Warner: Global Brand Ambassador for Chivas Regal

The Chivas Masters cocktail competition is built on Chivas’ belief that great bartending is measured not only by the achievements of an individual, but by the ability to work in harmony with others. The ultimate winner will not only impress with their individual bartending skills, but – crucially – will also prove their ability to work collaboratively with an international bartending team, and inspire others to achieve shared success, through the Chivas Masters Collective team challenge.

I cannot wait to put our contestants through their paces in Tokyo, and see who will walk away with the 2017 title – and beyond that, watch as they, together with their Chivas Masters Collective, take what they have learned to further develop and inspire their bartending communities back home.

– Max Warner

The 2017 Chivas Masters Global Champion will be decided on the evening of Wednesday 5th July, and will win an all-access, all-expenses-paid trip to Tales of The Cocktail 2017 in New Orleans. The winning Chivas Masters Collective team will walk away with the pinnacle of the range, Chivas Regal The Icon, presented in a bespoke decanter with customised Japanese glassware.

Follow the finalists’ journey in Tokyo and tune in live to the Global Final (05.07.17) through Instagram

Wolfburn’s signature expressions, Aurora and Northland

MAVERICK DRINKS APPOINTED WOLFBURN SINGLE MALT UK DISTRIBUTOR

Maverick Drinks is excited to announce that the Wolfburn distillery has chosen them as their partner to distribute their range of Scotch whiskies in the UK, including their World Whiskies Awards 2017 Gold Medal-winning Northland Single Malt.

The Northland

Wolfburn joins the carefully curated selection of craft spirit brands represented by Maverick Drinks, including Ableforth’s, FEW Spirits, St George Spirits and That Boutique-y Whisky and Gin Company.

The strength of their portfolio and their dedication to driving change in the spirits industry by reducing their customers’ reliance on mainstream brands played a substantial role in Maverick Drinks being named Spirits Distributor of the Year at the 2016 International Wine & Spirit Competition.

We’re absolutely thrilled to represent Wolfburn in the UK. Wolfburn have everything we look for in a brand: extraordinary quality, great design, and amazing people.

Shane and his team have a burgeoning reputation for making some of the best whisky in the world and I know we’re going to have a great time working together.
– Michael Vachon: Maverick Drinks’ Head of Brand Development

The Aurora

We’re hugely proud of our hand-crafted whiskies so it makes a lot of sense to team up with Maverick Drinks, as they’re at the forefront of the spirits revolution in the UK with a genuine focus on craftsmanship and quality.

– Shane Fraser: Wolfburn’s Distillery Manager

Wolfburn’s signature expressions, Northland and Aurora, are both available now from Maverick Drinks with a recommended retail price of £49.95.

How many components are required to create true complexity in a Blended Scotch Whisky?
For Double Single, instead of using many tens of component whiskies we have used just two – one single grain whisky and one single malt whisky (hence the name). Both are beautiful liquids in their own right but we believe they are elevated above the sum of their parts when combined in the correct proportions.
Such thinking runs strongly counter to the blending strategies evident in the larger, commercial Blended Scotch releases that dominate the whisky market worldwide, where many dozens of components can often be found within a single blend.
So why do things differently?
We believe that when using components of the highest quality, less is often more. That the interaction between a single grain and a single malt can be every bit as good – better even – than either a more complex blend or the component tasted on its own.
Above all, share & enjoy.
John Glaser, Whiskymaker
Availability: Limited Edition release of 5,838 bottles worldwide.
Bottled: March 2017.
Flavour Descriptors: The blending of the two component whiskies in The Double Single allows the sweet caramel flavours of the grain whisky to complement the fruity and herbal flavours of the malt, giving the final blend a creamy vanilla character overlaying a delicate ethereal malt whisky character.
Recommendations:  The combination is a deeply satisfying yet versatile whisky, perfect served as a rich aperitif before a winter’s dinner, or as a rewarding post-prandial any time of year.

Unit: 150cl.
ABV: 51.8%
Distilled: 1995.
Age: 21 Year Old.
Cask Type: Refill Hogshead.
Bottle: Hunter Laing & Co.
Hunter Laing & Co Ltd proudly offer this fine example of the distillers art as a special selection from their oldest stocks of whisky. No water has been added to reduce its strength, as the Angel's Share has already taken care of that. They have chosen to bottle this malt without chill-filtration and natural colour. By doing so, they leave in all the distillers preferred qualities apparent on the nose, palate and finish which is self-evident when you remove the cork.
As you can see on the label, this is one bottle of a very restricted offering, which, once consumed, cannot ever be repeated.
Tasting Notes: This golden whisky opens softly with moss and hay on the nose, then releases dried fruits which are surrounded by gentle peat smoke.
The palate is soft with more dried fruits, some coconut and with peat smoke more apparent than on the nose, yet again well integrated.
The finish is medium long, slightly dry on toasted barley with a hint of pepper.

Unveiled as part of La Maison du Whisky's 60th Anniversary celebrations, this expression from Edradour combines their single malt aged in Sherry casks and their peated single malt (which goes by the name of Ballechin).
Nose: Spicy oak, leading towards burnt oak and dark chocolate.
Palate: Oily malt, dried fruit and slightly coastal peat smoke.
Finish: Floral malt begins to take control on the finish, with final wafts of warming embers.
