Royal Salute Unveils Exclusive 30 Year Old Flask Edition!

June 20, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

A true collectors’ item, only a limited number of Royal Salute 30 Year Old The Flask Edition will be released.

Royal Salute, the exceptionally crafted and aged Scotch whisky, has unveiled an exclusive bespoke collector’s item – Royal Salute 30 Year Old The Flask Edition, offering whisky connoisseurs a luxurious way to drink Royal Salute on the move. The collector’s item houses a precious, rich and silky 30 year-old liquid, crafted exclusively by Royal Salute’s Director of Blending, Sandy Hyslop, and is presented alongside a bespoke porcelain flask, and other elegant accessories, from London’s award-winning designer, Afroditi Krassa.

A distinctive, full-bodied blend, Royal Salute 30-year-old The Flask Edition has been expertly crafted with some of the finest Scotch whiskies, aged for a minimum of 30 years. Providing the perfect vessel to house this unique blend, the edition is accompanied by a custom-made porcelain flask complete with funnel and wooden serving tray designed to provide the ultimate whisky drinking experience at home or while travelling. Afroditi Krassa, who created the refined accessories, has taken inspiration from one of the most ancient and elemental of art forms – the crystalline glazing process – and given it a contemporary twist.

The Royal Salute 30 Year Old The Flask Edition is a unique collector’s item that represents the perfect travel accessory for those on the go and celebrates our brand’s long history of crafting and refining luxury. The Flask Edition was first exclusively released in China and sold out immediately.

Given this success, we are delighted to release limited quantities of this extraordinary product globally and give whisky aficionados the chance to enjoy Royal Salute at home or on the move.
– Peter Moore: Global Prestige Brand Director at Chivas Brothers

I have a simple motivation each time I start a new project: I want to challenge the status quo. That’s why I was so inspired by Royal Salute – while all other whisky brands are content with glass, Royal Salute houses its whisky in precious porcelain.

I wanted to apply the same attitude to a flask and create something that is beautiful while also turning tradition on its head. Ceramics has a rich history and this project presented a really interesting contrast of ancient techniques crafted for a modern audience.
– Afroditi Krassa: London’s award-winning designer

A true collectors’ item, only a limited number of Royal Salute 30 Year Old The Flask Edition will be released. Initially available exclusively in China, a limited number can now be purchased at select, prestigious retailers across the globe, with a RRP of $790.

Sampling Abbey Whisky’s Glen Garioch 21 Year Old – Why You Will LOVE This Offering!

June 9, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

GLEN GARIOCH 21 YEAR OLD – 1994 / THE RARE CASKS RELEASE 6

Whisky Magazine Recommended Award – Issue 143

In Stock and Available for £99.98!

Only 126 bottles have been filled exclusively for Abbey Whisky!

The Rare Casks story continues with this magnificent Glen Garioch, the sixth release in the series. Distilled in 1994 and fully matured in a refill hogshead until 2016, only 126 bottles have been filled exclusively for Abbey Whisky.

As with each previous release in The Rare Casks series, the whisky has been bottled in it’s natural form, at full cask strength, without chill filtration or colour additives.

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – GLEN GARIOCH 21 YEAR OLD – 1994 / THE RARE CASKS RELEASE 6 (55%)

Colour: Pale gold colour.

Nose: Very fruity, citrus with notes of grapfruit most prominent, barley and inviting sticky, sugary vanilla.

Palate: Prominent grapefruit sourness counterpointing pineapple and warming vanilla sweetness.

Finish: Warm and spicy finish which is long with a satisfying glucose sweetness to top it off.

Overall: It’s got some tasy 55% Oomph! to it this one and the strong grapefruit notes surprised me at first but with added sipping (I am very dedicated) this became very morish indeed!
If you like a little sourness to your dram you will LOVE this offering!

Empty bottle, kind thoughts …

Many thanks to Mike at Abbey Whisky (@abbeywhisky) for sending me such a great dram sample!

Summary: Country/Region: America/Kentucky.

Elijah Craig / 12-Year-Old Small Batch Bourbon

Hancock's / President's Reserve Single Barrel Bourbon
Hancock's President's Reserve is a classic high rye content premium bourbon and one of the original barrel bourbons introduced by Master Distiller Emeritus who spent more than 50 years handcrafting Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey at the same distillery site that today is known as the Buffalo Trace Distillery.

Country: American
Region: American
Age:
Strength: 45.%

It was at the Sazerac Coffee House on Royal Street where local patrons were served toddies made with Rye Whiskey and Peychaud’s Bitters. The libation became known as the “Sazerac” and America’s first branded cocktail was born. This is the whiskey that started it all. Unique Features: With its distinctive bottle reminiscent of early settlers and “coffeehouses,” it’s easy to see how the Sazerac Whisky became a staple in the creation of one of America’s oldest cocktails. Dark and slightly mysterious, our 18-year-old Longrow has a complex nose that unearths a peaty aroma reminiscent of dunnage warehouses.
Nose: A complex nose: Sweet fruits, citrus, peaches and orange zest at first before a gentle earthy peaty aroma reveals itself.
Palate: Rich and very, very tasty. Well balanced. Dark chocolate, creamy coffee and gingerbread to the fore, followed by rhubarb and vanilla custard.
Finish: Long and sweet, a hint of typical Longrow peat smoke combined with more chocolate and some dried fruits.

BILLY LEIGHTON’S REDBREAST DREAM CASK – An Exclusive Tasting Of A Rare Dram!

May 25, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

#RedbreastDreamCask – ready to rock!

Last Saturday I had the good fortune to be part of Redbreast Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey’s www.facebook.com/RedbreastSinglePotStill, a Facebook LIVE tasting of a rare and exclusive Redbreast Irish whiskey to celebrate World Whisky Day 2017.

Head Blender Billy Leighton had hand-selected a Redbreast single cask and Billy then led the 20-minute tasting with Redbreast Apprentice Blender Dave McCabe, from warehouse A1 in the grounds of the Midleton Distillery, to a global audience of whiskey fans.

#RedbreastDreamCask is a single cask single pot still Irish whiskey that offers a unique take on Redbreast’s full bodied flavour profile, renowned for its signature Christmas cake character – the result of a strong contribution from Oloroso sherry casks.

A surprise was in store for us all!

Leighton and McCabe took whiskey fans on a whistle-stop journey through the history of Redbreast and shared the qualities that make the range the definitive example of single pot still whiskey from Ireland.

Finally, Billy let us know exactly what we would be tasting. The dram we were to sample was drawn from Cask 41207 with a final 46.7% ABV. This olorosso sherry cask is a recask from 2011.

Before that it spent 25 years in re-fill ex-bourbon barrel making this dram just over 31 years old!

So, what did I think? Here are my tasting notes …

Tasting Notes – Redbreast Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey – 31 Years Old (46.7%)

Colour: Beautiful, rich, mahogany colour with glorious depth.

Nose: Blood oranges, rich dark fruits, blackcurrant.

Palate: Succuluent dark fruits, blackcurrants and blood orange abounds. Vanilla caramel adds a creamy accompaniment.

Finish: Black coffee, fresh pepper and very, very long!

Overall: This is a rich feast of flavours! The nose is exceptional and promises very great things. The taste does not disappoint, it is intense and satisfying. A rare treat and my tastebuds have rarely been so spoiled!

Redbreast is available to buy from these Whisky Merchants:-

Irish Distillers’ Scoops Ten Top Tasting Awards!

May 23, 2017 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Redbreast Family

The Irish Distillers family of prestige Irish Whiskeys has been awarded 10 gold or above medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and International Spirits Challenge 2017. Top honours were awarded to Redbreast 15, Best Single Pot Still Whiskey and Best Irish Whiskey, and Midleton Very Rare, Best Blended Irish Whiskey, at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Redbreast 15 Year Old Whiskey

In addition, Redbreast 12 Year Old Cask Strength claimed its third Double Gold medal in a row at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition – a testament to the consistency in quality of Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey craftsmanship at the Midleton Distillery. The array of gold medals, around half of the 22 decorations awarded to Irish Distillers across the two prestigious tastings, cements Redbreast as the most awarded Single Pot Still Whiskey in the world.

Yellow Spot 12 Year Old followed up a near-perfect 99/100 points at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge with a Gold medal at the International Spirits Challenge, whereas Midleton Barry Crockett Legacy was honoured by the same competition with the sixth Gold medal since its release in 2011.

In total, the prestige range from Irish Distillers secured four Double Gold and six Gold medals across the San Francisco World Spirits Competition (SFWSC) and International Spirits Challenge (ISC):
· Redbreast 15 Year Old: Best Irish Whiskey, Best Pure Pot Still Irish Whiskey and Double Gold medal (SFWSC)
· Redbreast 12 Year Old Cask Strength: Double Gold medal (SFWSC)
· Midleton Very Rare: Best Blended Irish Whiskey and Double Gold medal (SFWSC)
· METHOD AND MADNESS Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey Finished in Chestnut: Double Gold medal (SFWSC)
· Midleton Dair Ghaelach: Gold medal (SFWSC)
· Redbreast 21 Year Old: Gold medals (SFWSC and ISC)
· METHOD AND MADNESS Single Malt Irish Whiskey Enhanced with French Limousin Oak: Gold medal (SFWSC)
· Yellow Spot: Gold medal (ISC)
· Midleton Barry Crockett Legacy: Gold medal (ISC)

We are delighted with the continued success of Redbreast and the breadth of Midleton’s prestige Irish Whiskey family in global spirit tasting competitions – our whiskeys continue to achieve great things and we are incredibly proud of them. The quality of our whiskeys is testament to the hard work and dedication of the production team at Midleton Distillery, past and present.

Lest we forget the skilled distillers and blenders that laid down and observed these whiskeys mature over the years, in the hope that they would be enjoyed years later – it’s great to see that they certainly are being enjoyed!
– Billy Leighton: Head Blender at the Midleton Distillery, County Cork

Now in its 17th year, the San Francisco World Spirits Challenge is one of the most influential spirits competitions in the world and is judged by a line-up of esteemed drinks journalists, producers and experts. Run each year in partnership with respected drinks trade bible, Drinks International, the International Spirits Challenge is one of the most authoritative and influential spirits competitions in the world and celebrates its 22nd anniversary this year.
