Port Charlotte 10 Year Old Heavily Peated

Conceived, distilled, matured and bottled on Islay alone. We are a young team with deep-rooted values, and an ambition to make the ultimate “Islay” Islay whisky.

A whisky made by people not software; a whisky watched over every day of its maturing life by those who made it; a whisky born of a community with a vision and a mission to kick start a single malt whisky revolution, this Port Charlotte 10 year old is who we are. This is where we’re from.

£50.00 per bottle

Port Charlotte – Islay Barley

The heavily peated malt for this new dram has been created from harvests brought home from three Islay farms, by Raymond and his farming colleagues Neil Mclellan and Raymond Fletcher.

The resulting rich, aromatic Port Charlotte wash was trickle distilled in our Victorian stillhouse during 2011. Moving forward we now have 19 farmers who have made the commitment to grow for us and to whom we are equally committed. This Islay barley is who we are. This is where we’re from.

Worth £20.00 per bottle – but it’s FREE!

Summary:

COUNTRY/REGION: Scotland/Various.

CATEGORY: Single Malt.

BOTTLER: Distillery Bottling.

BOTTLING SERIE: Game of Thrones.

BOTTLED: 2018

In celebration of the eighth and final season of the critically-acclaimed TV series, Game of Thrones, DIAGEO and HBO have released a limited-edition collection of single malt scotch whiskies inspired by the show. Each of these rare scotches is paired with one of the iconic Houses of Westeros, as well as the Night’s Watch, giving fans an authentic taste of the Seven Kingdoms and beyond. These iconic whiskies serve as must-have collectibles for Game of Thrones and whisky adorers to toast to the final season.

HOUSE TARGARYEN / CARDHU GOLD RESERVE: Fueled by the same fiery spirit of the fierce female leadership of Daenerys Targaryen, this single malt celebrates legendary women and their unwavering perseverance. The Cardhu Distillery was pioneered by Helen Cumming and her daughter-in-law Elizabeth during the 1800s, a time when the whisky industry was almost entirely male-dominated.

TASTING NOTES: Baked apple with baking spices open on the first nosing than transforms on the palate into a rich caramel character with hints of clove, red apple and a gentle nuttiness.

HOUSE TYRELL / CLYNELISH RESERVE: House Tyrell of Highgarden rules over the Reach, the lush and fertile region of Westeros. Like the Reach, Clynelish is positioned among green pastures and rolling hills, with scenic views of the North Sea. This vibrant, golden Scotch is light and floral, like House Tyrell, it’s not to be underestimated with its underlying complex combination of Highland and maritime qualities.

TASTING NOTES: Bursting with fresh tropical fruits like papaya and mango that subsides into a creamy vanilla character. The finish is slightly maritime in quality with a delicate floral note.

HOUSE BARATHEON / ROYAL LOCHNAGAR 12 YEAR OLD: Royal lineage drives the iconic pairing between House Baratheon and Royal Lochnagar. Similar to Robert Baratheon ruling the Seven Kingdoms upon the Iron Throne, Royal Lochnagar was deemed a whisky worthy of a royal family as it was granted a Royal Warrant after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited the distillery in 1848. Balanced with delicate fruits and spices, this taste of royalty is best enjoyed neat.

TASTING NOTES: Light notes of oak and sweet liquorice that develops into a rich, creamy vanilla coffee and finishes with a mild nutmeg custard note.

HOUSE TULLY / SINGLETON OF GLENDULLAN SELECT: House Tully located at Riverrun, rules as the lord of The River lands. The power of water flows through both House Tully and The Singleton Glendullan Select as it is made on the banks of the River Fiddich in the wooded hills of Dufftown. Here they harnessed the water that flowed through the land utilizing a water wheel to power the entire distillery.

TASTING NOTES: Orange and clove open on the nose but on the palate there’s red berry compote and vanilla cheesecake with a pronounced cereal spice finish.

HOUSE GREYJOY / TALISKER SELECT RESERVE: House Greyjoy rules the Iron Islands and worships the Drowned God. Talisker was a natural pair for House Greyjoy as this single malt is distilled on the shores of the Isle of Skye, one of the most remote and rugged areas of Scotland. The layered flavors and signature maritime character of Talisker Select Reserve are the result of its wave-battered shores. This liquid is an intense smoky single malt scotch with spicy, powerful and sweet elements combined with maritime flavours.

TASTING NOTES: Dry Sichuan peppery smoke and dark chocolate on the nose. On the palate the salted caramel with chili flakes explode into a smoky fruit cake of spice and the finish is long and complex with a lasting character of leather.

HOUSE LANNISTER / LAGAVULIN 9 YEAR OLD: Lagavulin is one of the most legendary single malt brands and has been crafted on the shores of Islay for more than 200 years—mirroring the meticulous calculation and tenacity employed by the Lannister’s in their rise to conquer the Iron Throne. This single malt whisky is a roaring single malt that recalls the Lannister’s riches and is best served neat or with a single drop of water.

TASTING NOTES: Characteristic Lagavulin sweet smoke explodes on the nose with a little more brine than the other expressions. The palate opens with smoked caramelized banana and heavy vanilla and burnt marshmallow which subside into a light dry, slightly salted caramel.

HOUSE STARK / DALWHINNIE WINTER’S FROST: House Stark’s resiliency, strength and ability to thrive under the most intense situations are greatly shaped by Winterfell’s frigid temperatures. Dalwhinnie, known for being one of the highest distilleries in all of Scotland is cold and remote much like The North where House Stark calls home, making the two an iconic pairing. Extreme conditions are responsible for shaping the signature Dalwhinnie Winter’s Frost honeyed sweetness and spicy warmth. Naturally, it’s best served chilled or over ice.

TASTING NOTES: Honey and fresh fig develop on the palate followed by a delicious maltiness and rich fruit cake.

THE NIGHT’S WATCH / OBAN BAY RESERVE: The Oban distillery sits beneath the steep cliff that overlooks the bay in the frontier between the west Highlands and the Islands of Scotland, separating land and sea, just as Castle Black, home of The Night’s Watch, sits between Westeros and the lands beyond The Wall. The liquid’s richness is balanced with a woody, spicy dryness that The Night’s Watch could enjoy even on the coldest of nights.

TASTING NOTES: Rich notes of cherry pie and candied orange peel open up on the palate that drifts into a wonderful crème caramel and a wisp of charred oak.

In the heart of the distillery grounds there is a quiet corner. In these sacred surrounds sits the traditional dunnage warehouse. Within, their most treasured casks. These exclusive casks enjoy a magnificent atmosphere, laid low on antique wooden rails above cool earthen floor and stacked single level – unencumbered – so the warehouse men may keep vigil on the gently maturing spirit.

At Tomatin’s very core, Warehouse 6, is a truly special place. Since being distilled on December 8, 1975, the precious spirit inside cask number 35834 has been lying undisturbed in Warehouse 6, gently and slowly maturing in a hand-selected Spanish Oloroso Sherry Butt. The cask’s custodians have been their long-standing distillery men who have been maintaining the warehouses and their exquisite contents over time – indeed over four decades – allowing a well-balanced and elegant spirit to emerge from within.

With patience comes reward. Forty-three years on, the Distillery Manager, Graham Eunson, has declared this spirit ready to be relished. In perfect harmony, tropical and dried fruits, dark chocolate and warm spices balance with the complex background aromas created by decades of slow oxidation in its unique warehouse locale indicating a profound provenance, before a long and elegant finish.

Jameson Fans Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day With An Arctic Expedition!

March 19, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

Jameson & Huskie!

This year, Jameson searched the globe for Jameson fans who always celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and rewarded them with a trip of a lifetime!

To show it’s not about where you are, but about who you’re with, the group travelled to the most northerly inhabited area on the globe, Svalbard, Norway to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

Not many places to get a Jameson round here!

It’s marked by the co-ordinates 17° longitude 80° latitude, a tribute to the year John Jameson set up his Dublin distillery.

The friends, from Ireland, India and Argentina, trekked over frozen terrain, overcoming obstacles along the way, to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the most unexpected way.

In-between the snowmobile races, husky rides and ice cave climbing, the Jameson fans cemented their new friendships in the freezing Arctic conditions – bringing new meaning to Jameson on ice.

The group’s off-the-grid adventure was a success, arriving at their final destination, as close as humanly possible to 17° (longitude) 80° (latitude), where they raised a glass and toasted St. Patrick’s Day together (link to video).

Made from just two parcels of whisky, which they are unlikely to source again at these ages, Tobias & the Angel is a culmination of two decades of whiskymaking.

They have a long-held reverence for the whiskies of the Clynelish and Caol Ila Distilleries. Ever since Eleuthera, which they created in 2002, they have understood that these two distillery whiskies complement each other exquisitely.

So great is their reverence for the flavour profiles of these distilleries, and so elevated are the ages of the individual whiskies they have used in this blend, to inspire their label artwork they turned to the paintings of the Renaissance.

They have chosen Tobias & the Angel, produced at the studio of Andrea del Verrocchio in the 15th century. One of the young apprentices, and the painter of the small tousle-haired dog and the gleaming fish Tobias carries, was Leonardo da Vinci.

We love the beauty in the work, and the symbolism of the naïve boy and the divine angel. It speaks to how we see the relationship between the ethereal character of the 24-year-old whisky, sourced from the Clynelish Distillery, and the aromatic smokiness exhibited by the considerably older spirit from Caol Ila Distillery.

Like the painting, this whisky charms and dazzles. It is a singular work, a testament to all they have learned in nearly 20 years of whisky blending.

WHISKY DETAILS PROVIDED BY WHISKY ISRAEL: A new Compass Box whisky review today (happy me), and quite an unusual one, if I might say…

Some may call it sacrilege, but Compass Box thought the addition of one year old ‘sacrificial spirit’ would be the perfect component to use in their limited edition blend to celebrate ten years of collaboration with their good friends at the package design company Stranger & Stranger, hence the name.

‘Sacrificial spirit? what?!’, you ask… well, let me explain. John Glaser & Co., have made a brilliant blended whisky and put a finger in the SWA’s eye, they have included a one year old grain spirit, which can not be whisky, hence making the entire concoction NOT A WHISKY, by definition. Of course it’s whisky, and of course it’s brilliant as always, but this is another of their “in your face” sort of action, protesting against the SWA’s regulations which do not allow for 100% transparency. Remember the 3 year old de-luxe? which included some old whiskies, and some 3 year old just for the kick of it? well, this goes one step further. Brilliant, and a very coragoes move on behalf of CB, which know this whisky will sell well no matter how they call it (actually they refer to it as “Scotch malt whisky blended with wheat & barley spirit“).

so what’s inside? 80% Malt Whisky from Glenlossie distillery in a re-char Hogshead, 14% Malt whisky from Glen Elgin in re-char Barrels, 5% Malt Whisky from Linkwood in a Sherry Butt, and 1% of the “Sacrificial spirit” from Girvan grain distillery from a re-fill Hogshead : (The spirit spent one year in their experimental American oak barrels to season the wood. After the spirit fulfilled its original purpose of seasoning these experimental barrels, they filled it into a refill hogshead for safe keeping while they created this new blend)

*(The spirit spent one year in their experimental American oak barrels to season the wood. After the spirit fulfilled its original purpose of seasoning these experimental barrels, they filled it into a refill hogshead for safe keeping while they created this new blend)

NOSE: lovely and fresh with lots of apple, pear and a sweet sugary note as well, apple pie, and sweet dough, a hint of candied ginger, bordering on unripe tropical fruit, candied pineapple, and wood. Wow. Nice start! So light, green and fresh, with the dominating Glenlossie apples. Bingo!

PALATE: richer thicker and sweeter, with butter stewed apples, honey, vanilla and spice toasted oak and bitter chocolate, filled with sweet caramel. More fruit comes on the 2nd wave of sensations, mostly plum and some apricot, and burnt sugar, pepper then the pineapple kicks in.

FINISH: spicy, with pepper, ginger powder sweet caramel, and toasted oak.

CONCLUSION: No surprise here, as with many CB Whiskies, with a gimmick or without the gimmick, this is a beautiful dram: from the rich apples on the nose, through a more robust and sweet/fruity palate, and a delightful finish. This is a blending tour de force on behalf of Glaser & Co. Splendid stuff. Not cheap though at $200. Call it what you like, this is damn good dram.

Indeed, the casks that this whisky was maturing in were all but forgotten, until our blender discovered them whilst reviewing the warehouse ledgers. Sourced from the legendary wines and spirit merchant, J.G Turney, these casks have been home to this stunning whisky for the past forty years.

This unique 40 Year Old is as rare as it is prized – if you’re ever lucky enough to hold one, be gentle, you’re holding a piece of history!

TASTING NOTES: Dr Kirstie McCallum, Senior Blender describes the Bunnahabhain 11 year old Pedro Ximénez as:

NOSE: Hints of tropical fruits, banana, berries, creamy toffee, vanilla, rich nuttiness and delicate sweet oak.

PALATE: Sweet malt, creamy caramel, vanilla, creamy berries, with hints of toasted nuts, tropical fruit, banana and pineapple.

The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 year old single malt whisky gains its distinctive character from being matured in two wood types.

To make The Balvenie DoubleWood, David Stewart MBE takes whisky that has spent at least 12 years in traditional whisky casks, American Oak ex-bourbon barrels and hogsheads, and moves it to Spanish oak ex-Oloroso sherry casks for an additional nine months.

The whisky is then transferred to large oak vessels called “tuns” for 3-4 months to allow the whiskies to “marry”.

Each stage lends different qualities to the resulting single malt whisky. The traditional casks soften and add delicate character, the sherry wood brings depth and fullness of flavour and the final few months in our tuns allow the whiskies to marry harmoniously.

NOSE: Sweet fruit and Oloroso sherry notes, layered with honey and vanilla.

TASTE: Smooth and mellow with beautifully combined flavours ~ nutty sweetness, cinnamon spiciness and a delicately proportioned layer of sherry.

FINISH: Long and Warming.

The Balvenie Single Barrel First Fill is a 12 year old single malt whisky, aged in a first fill, ex-bourbon cask. Almost all Scotch whisky is matured in casks previously used by Bourbon distillers. When brought to Scotland and used for the very first time they are known as ‘First Fill’.

The Malt Master samples the aged whisky, cask by cask and selects only those characterised by sweetness and subtle vanilla oak to be bottled as The Balvenie Single Barrel First Fill.

A series of “limited editions” – Each bottle is one of no more than 300 drawn from a single cask and each is hand-numbered and carries the number of the cask in which it matured

NOSE: Honey notes, overlaid with sweet fruits and subtle spices.

TASTE: Rich and complex with deep vanilla oakiness.

FINISH: Lingeringly sweet.

The Balvenie Peat Week Aged 14 Years (2003 Vintage) is the result of trials undertaken in 2001 by The Balvenie Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE and our former distillery manager Ian Millar.

At a time when few Speyside distilleries were using peat in production, The Balvenie decided to distil a batch of heavily peated malt, which was laid down to mature at the distillery in Dufftown, Scotland.

Ever since then we’ve dedicated one week each year, named Peat Week, to using 100% Highland peat to dry our barley. Instead of coastal elements of iodine, salt and medicinal characteristics so commonly associated with Islay peat, Highland peat imparts earthy, woody smoke notes. This means that even though Peat Week is made using heavily peated malt (30ppm) it has an unexpected sweetness deeply rooted in the Speyside regional character.

The Balvenie Peat Week Aged 14 Years (2003 Vintage) is a single vintage bottling, limited and rare by nature. This non-chill filtered expression is bottled at 48.3% ABV and matured solely in American Oak casks, providing a velvety and round taste with woody peat smoke balancing oaky vanilla and honey.

NOSE: Gentle sweet peat smoke with some lighter floral notes and delicate butterscotch honey.

TASTE: Velvety and round to taste with the peat smoke balancing citrus flavours, oaky vanilla and blossom honey.

FINISH: Gentle smoke with a lingering and creamy vanilla sweetness.

To craft The Balvenie DoubleWood 17 year old single malt whisky Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE returned to one of his most celebrated achievements – consecutive maturation in two different types of cask, a process often referred to as ‘cask finishing’.

This technique is at the heart of The Balvenie DoubleWood – it sees the whisky matured first in American oak barrels, which impart soft sweet vanilla notes, before being transferred to European oak sherry casks, where the second cask ageing adds rich spicy flavours and a depth and fullness of flavour.

The DoubleWood 17 year old is an elder sibling to DoubleWood 12 year old and shares its honeyed, spicy characteristics, but it is distinctly different, with deeper vanilla notes, hints of green apple, creamy toffee and a striking richness and complexity.

NOSE: Elegant and complex oak, vanilla, honeyed sweetness and a hint of green apple.

TASTE: Sweet with dried fruits, sherbet spice, toasted almonds and cinnamon, layered with a richness of creamy toffee notes and traces of oak and deep vanilla.

FINISH: Vanilla oak, honey and spicy sweetness.

The Balvenie Single Barrel Traditional Oak is characterised by subtle spices and rich honeyed sweetness. Malt Master David C. Stewart MBE only selects casks of whisky for bottling that have the character he expects of Balvenie matured for 25 years exclusively in American oak.

However, no two casks will ever produce an identical single malt. As such, this 25 year old single malt whisky from a Single Barrel Traditional Oak Aged is unique and no more than 300 bottles will be filled from any one cask. This is reflected on the bottle label – hand numbered and carrying the distillation date, bottling date and cask number in which the Scotch whisky was matured.

The Glasgow Distillery Company Announces Their 2019 Releases!

March 7, 2019 by Gary Leave a Comment

The Signature Range

The Glasgow Distillery Company has announced the return of their 1770 Single Malt Scotch Whisky, with the 2019 release now available to pre-order via their distillery website.

The 2019 Release is now available to pre-order

The distillery has also revealed the launch of two new expressions: 1770 Peated and 1770 Triple Distilled. Together, these three new expressions will collectively form the Signature Range.

The eagerly anticipated return of 1770 follows the highly successful ‘sold-out’ first release in 2018. Matured in first fill ex-bourbon casks, finished in virgin oak and non-chill filtered; 1770 Single Malt is smooth, fruity and complex; a single malt of sublime quality.

With the 2019 Release now available to order with shipping in April, the first Peated expression will be available in late 2019 and the Triple Distilled in early 2020.

We were very humbled by the demand generated from our inaugural release. The ballot for Release No.1. was heavily oversubscribed, so we are delighted to be able to bring the 2019 Release to the market.

It’s very exciting to finally reveal the news of our forthcoming Peated and Triple Distilled expressions.

Innovation is very important to us, and the announcement of the 1770 Signature Range is no different. We’re proud to be one of a select few distilleries in Scotland to have three different styles of single malt as part of their core whisky offering.

Individually unique and collectively brilliant, the full range of 1770 Whisky will provide consumers with an understanding of what we are about at Glasgow Distillery – creating handcrafted premium products to enjoy.

We would like to encourage anyone interested in these releases to follow us on social media, @1770Whisky, where we will be revealing the latest product news and providing opportunities to secure exclusive access to new releases.
– Liam Hughes: CEO and Co-founder of The Glasgow Distillery Company

1770 Glasgow Single Malt Scotch Whisky – 2019 Release is now available to pre-order via the Glasgow Distillery website, (Price £49) with shipping in April.

Taste-wise, it's a really singular and complex peated malt with huge savoury notes, lots of earthy smoke, and a solid honeyed backbone. It's not a make that's seen that often, and really worth a go for anyone who likes peated whisky and wants to try something different!
